The need to develop sustainable tourism practices is a rapidly emerging issue in Indonesia.

The Sustainable Tourism Professional Practicum (STPP) provides Australian students with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the social, cultural and political systems that underpin the tourism industry in Indonesia, and to consider issues relating to sustainability and resource management within the sector.

The classroom components of the program (language classes and industry seminar series) are hosted by Udayana University in Bali and will equip students with the language skills and cultural awareness necessary to operate effectively during their professional placements. The practicum placement allows students to gain practical experience in tourism and hospitality management and other commercial practices within Indonesia’s tourism and hospitality sector.

The program is overseen by an academic specialist with expertise in sustainable tourism practices in the Indonesian context.

The program runs from early January until mid-February each year.

The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies known as ACICIS (pronounced “ah-chee-chis” as an Indonesian would) has been opening doors to tertiary institutions throughout Indonesia since 1994, offering a range of study options and in-country support to help students gain invaluable first-hand experience of one of the richest and most diverse countries in the world.ACICIS gratefully acknowledges the current and historical contributions made to the consortium’s growth and development - in the form of both financial and in-kind support - by Murdoch University, The University of Western Australia, the Department of Foriegn Affairs and Trade (DFAT)’s Australia Indonesia Institute (AII), the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training (DET), the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP), the Myer Foundation, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC), and the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan.
