THE MISSION OF TASP

TASP is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of at-risk parents with learning difficulties and their children.

This primarily includes parents who may be identified as persons with intellectual disabilities or borderline intellectual functioning.

TASP’S GUIDING PRINCIPLES• We recognized that family life is complex.

• We move forward in step with self-advocates in this shared work.

• The expertise and resources that we have and share with parents, self-advocates and others are focused on supporting parents with learning difficulties and the people who support them. This expertise and these resources may also benefit parents with other cognitive challenges and the people who support them.

TASP GUIDING PRINCIPLES• In situations where it is believed that separation from parents

is in the best interest of children, such decisions must be made with the highest level of care and objectivity.

• We undertake this work in the context of a socio-cultural history that is unsupportive of parenting by people with learning difficulties; we make an effort to correct that history through our advocacy and actions.

• We acknowledge that all families need support and rely on inter-dependent networks.

TASP GUIDING PRINCIPLES• There is a comprehensive body of research on parents with ID

that should be relied upon and the supports and interventions that are offered should be informed by this research.

• Supports for parents with learning difficulties should be individualized, attuned to the strengths of each individual and family, and should be made available across the lifespan of parenting

• With appropriate, evidence-based, culturally responsive supports that are sustained over a period of time, the parenting skills of parents with learning difficulties can be enhanced. 6
