“Spreading Oil’ Romans 12:18

If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone. In 1757 Benjamin Franklin sailed for England aboard a ship that joined a fleet of nearly one hundred others. From the deck Franklin noticed that the water behind most of the ships was churning and agitated; but two ships had calm wakes, as though gliding through the sea. Asking the captain about it, he received this reply: “The cooks on those two ships have just thrown their greasy water overboard.” Franklin spent years pondering this phenomenon. He even designed a walking cane with a hollow center that he filled with oil. When at a lake or river, he’d amaze his friends with a little parlor trick. No matter how choppy the water, when he poured is oil onto the surface, it became more calm. The calmness would spread out and cover a wide area. Franklin’s discovery was the object of much inquiry. People wanted to know why a thin layer of oil could create such calm on the waters. The answer was simple. Ripples and waves are caused by the friction between air and water. When a gust of wind blows over a body of water, the air grabs at the water and lifts it up. When the surface of the water is coated with oil, the friction is reduced, and the wind cannot easily get hold of the water. What oil is to water, grace and graciousness are to our relationships. People tend to rub one another the wrong way. The friction between our personalities creates ripples of disharmony. But when we pour the oil of grace onto the water, it has a way of calming the seas. If we’re gracious to people----we don’t get mad as easily; we don’t stay mad long; we don’t take offense or let a root of bitterness spring up---if we forgive easily and assume the best in others, and if we learn to smile through the day, we’ll have a much happier life and loves others better. Each Sunday we will watch a five minute video, followed by the sermon, and then further reflection and discussion in your small group during the week. This cinematic and discussion series will follow one family as they are confronted with their ability to “do” with what God has given them. The story addresses the personal challenges we all face of being busy, wanting to be stable and comfortable, and not knowing how to best honor God and love those around us with what we have to offer.

The Jesus Storybook Bible

Every story whispers His name. A Bible like no other, The Jesus Storybook Bible invites children to join in the greatest of all adventures, to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God's great story of salvation--and at the center of their own story too!

The Jesus Storybook Bible tells the story beneath all the stories in the Bible. At the center of all is a baby, the child upon whom everything will depend. From Noah, to Moses, to the great King David—every story points to Him. He is the missing piece to the puzzle—the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, as the story unfolds, children will pick up the clues and piece together the puzzle.

1st-4th Grade

Exciting topics, a strong focus on Jesus our Savior, and faith-strengthening “apologetics” take your 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders through the Bible in the order that things actually happened! Not only do kids get answers to their hard questions, they also get a big-picture overview of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation!

For more information contact Lori Gunsallus at [email protected].

Generosity Small Group Series

In the Fall we will begin an all-church small group experience, that ties into our Fall Sermon Series. The curriculum will be on Living Generously, Loving Generously, and Leading Generously. Each small group will meet in someone’s home and further reflect and discuss the topic of the sermon.

The story follows a family as they are confronted with their ability to “do” with what God has given them and addresses the personal challenges we all face of being busy, wanting to be stable and comfortable, and not knowing how to best honor God and love those around us with what we have to offer.

We are hoping for as many people as possible to participate. Sign up in the back of the sanctuary to be in a small group. You will be able to share what day and time works best for you to join a group in someone's home.

Contact Pastor Benjamin Lins if you are able to join a small group, [email protected] or 570-484-1705.

Adult Sunday University 9 AM in the Conference Room Begins on Sunday, Sept. 7th

“1st & 2nd Peter and Jude” by Carolyn Nystrom

This fall, the Great Island Church invites all adults to a Sunday School small group. Most every Sunday in the church at 9 AM, we will reflect on the 1st & 2nd letters of Peter and Jude. Our discussions will consider current issues arising from these letters: A. As Christians, are we mere travelers in a pagan world? B. Why and how is a life in Christ possibly a counter culture experience? C. How do we recognize a false teacher of God’s word? Are we misleading others about the reality of Gods Word and Spirit?

Join us and experience how Christ centered Scripture and Spirit impacts you life and relationships.

Odyssey-Women’s Group Odyssey meets on the 1st & 3rd Sundays monthly beginning on Sun., Sept. 7th

at 7 PM in the Cave Room Has food become more about frustration than fulfillment? The New York Times bestselling book Made to Crave is the missing link between a woman’s desire to be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to make that happen. Author Lysa TerKeurst personally understands the battle that women face. In Made to Crave, she will help you: Break the cycle of “I’ll start again on Monday,” and feel good about yourself today. Stop agonizing over numbers on the scale and make peace with your body. Replace rationalization that leads to diet failure with wisdom that leads to victory. Reach your healthy goals and grow closer to God through the process.

This book is not a how-to manual or the latest, greatest dieting plan. Made to Crave is a helpful companion to use alongside whatever healthy eating approach you choose — a book and Bible study to help you find the “want to” in how to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Join Lysa and experience all that you were made to crave!
