The Arc of Colours
Warm UpForm groups of five. Read this poem aloud in class. You can also sing it.
First comes the rain cloud passing byDropping raindrops in my eye!
Then comes the sunshine up so highNow, a rainbow in the sky!
Have you ever seen a rainbow?
Doesn’t it look beautiful? The seven colours in a rainbow are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
Do you think the colours in a rainbow always stay together peacefully? Let us read a story about the colours of the rainbow.
Once upon a time, the colours started to fight. Each colour said that it was the most important one.

Green said, ‘I am the colour of nature. That is why I am the best.’
Blue interrupted, ‘I am the colour of water. Without water, you would be nothing.’
Yellow laughed, ‘I bring fun and warmth to the world. The sun, the moon and the stars are yellow.’
Orange said, ‘Think of my beauty when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset!’
Red shouted, ‘I am the colour of love!’
Violet spoke with great power, ‘I am the colour of royalty! I am the sign of wisdom and authority.’
Indigo spoke quietly, ‘I am the colour of silence. You need me for prayer and peace.’
Suddenly, there was a flash of lightning.
The seven colours heard Rain speak in a booming voice, ‘You foolish colours, fighting among yourselves!
Don’t you know that each of you was made for a special purpose?
When it rains, all of you will join hands and stretch across the sky together.
The rainbow is a sign of hope so that we can all get together and shine, even with our differences.’
The colours felt ashamed. They obeyed Rain and stopped fighting.

Warm UpWrite down the names of three big and three small animals. How many of these animals have you seen?
The elephant is very large,And I am very small; The snail might say as much to me—He’d think me very tall!A rose is to a ladybirdA palace great and sweet; As big as houses must appear To children in the street.
And stars, that look so wee, are big,Some bigger than the sun;And yet they sprinkle all the sky,Like currants in a bun.And though I’m really seven years old,So large, compared with me,Is Daddy’s car—when I get down,I feel I’m scarcely three!

Naren’s Kindness
Warm UpHow do you celebrate your birthday? Tell the class about it.
There was great excitement at Vishvanath Dutta’s house. It was the 12th of January, little Naren’s birthday. The house was decorated with flowers. From the kitchen came the delicious aroma of the feast that was being prepared for the relatives and friends who had been invited.Naren’s mother laid out the new clothes Naren would wear and said, ‘Remember, no naughtiness today. Try to be a good boy!’‘Yes, Ma,’ replied Naren. ‘I’ll try.’‘Now off you go to bathe.’Naren, freshly bathed, came out of the bathroom and said his prayers. Then, he quickly wore the new clothes that had been bought for him. It was just what he had wanted! A silk dhoti and kurta and a warm shawl, exactly like the clothes his father wore to court. Carefully, he combed his hair and then, proud as a peacock, he strutted before the huge mirror!

While he was admiring himself, he heard a beggar calling for alms.
He ran to the window, and saw a wretched family
shivering in the cold. As he heard their sad and painful cries, the cold they
felt pierced his heart.
Quickly, he opened the window and took off the
shawl and threw it down. Then followed his kurta and the dhoti.
A little while later, his mother came in to find him dressed in his old clothes. Before she could speak, Naren said, ‘Ma, don’t be angry with me. They were shivering in the cold, so I…’
‘Gave away your new clothes!’ interrupted his mother. ‘Oh Naren, will you give away everything just because someone needs it? At this rate, you will become a monk. But enough of my scolding. Come down and eat.’
Naren’s mother’s words were to come true. Naren gave up the world to serve the poor and today we know him as Swami Vivekananda.
