From the Desk of the President

Dear Well-wishers,

In the development of any nation, no doubt the role of the Government in office is very

important. However, there are number of persons in the society, whose selfless contributions

create new land marks for the society, even more than the

Government. Social reformers are one of them, whose

contributions bring happiness in the lives of common man.

They don’t expect any praise from the society or the

Government. They live and die for the cause.

The year 2016 reminds all of us of the pioneering contribution

of two 'Rishis' of this era, namely Padmabhushan Dr. Banoo

Coyajee and Padmavibhushan Shri.Nanaji Deshmukh. 2016

is their birth centenary year. I was fortunate to have worked

closely with both these incredible icons.

The centenary year is an opportunity to remember and salute the path breaking work done

by both of them for the welfare of the society. Dr. Banoo Coyajee through the medical field and

Nanaji through his dream project of 'Swawalambi Gram Yojana' brought happiness in the lives

of lacs of people of the underprivileged sections of the society. On this solemn occasion, we

all bow before them and seek their blessings.

We are presenting the annual work report for year 2016. Wardhinee is also working on the

integrated development of underprivileged sections of the society. The readers will get an idea

of our humble effort to make a difference. Your response on how we could serve better will be

deeply appreciated. Wardhinee will continue to work with a missionary zeal to make that

much needed difference to the society.

(Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar)President

He especially thanked his wife and family members forencouraging him to work for social cause. In his presidential address, Shri. Avinash Dharmadhikarisaid that leaders like Lokmanya Tilak and Agarkar embraced poverty but did not waver from theirmission to awaken the society against the British Rule. The Govt. machinery and the administrators areanswerable not only to the elected representatives, but also to the whole society.Celebration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr . Babasaheb Ambedkar

Dr. Ambedkar was a great patriot, a social thinker, politicalreformer, economist & a philosophical writer with progressiveideas. He fought for the betterment of the oppressed anddepressed classes. Dr. Ambedkar had etched mark of his talentand vision in drafting the Indian Constitution. He was candidabout his ideas of nation building & possessed a great foresight. His PhD thesis was inspirational in setting up the FinanceCommission of India and his works helped immensely inframing guidelines for the RBI Act 1934. Truly, he was a makerof modern India. On the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, the trustees of ‘Swa'-Roopwardhinee decided to celebrate hisbirth anniversary year through various programs and activities.Till now, we have been able to organize more than 40 programsin the form of Abhyaswarg, Samuhik Upasana, Life Story Telling

Sessions, Street Plays, Blood Donation Camps, Special Guest Lectures by Dr. Sheshrao More andShri. Ramesh Pandav etc.Interview with Shri. Mohan GujarathiShri. Mohan Gujarathi, the Director of Prabodh Udyog was interviewed onthe occasion of inauguration of Prabodh Sabhagruh. He shared hisexperiences of working with Dr. Appasaheb Pendse, the founder ofJnanaprabodhinee and Shri. Kishabhau Patwardhan, the founder of ‘Swa’-Roopwardhinee. He unfolded the journey of Prabodh Udyog in a very informaldialogue. The interview was quite motivational. The young volunteers wereinspired by his following thoughts:lllll Compete with yourself, instead of competing with otherslllll You must punish yourself, for your own mistake or if you have failed to do

something which you had plannedlllll We really learn through experiencelllll Do not think only about your own success; think how others too will

succeedlllll Your fate will be positive only if your motives is nobleDe-addiction through self-realizationMost of the students of the Trust come from socially or economically weaker sections of the society. In some of these families, the addiction of an earning parent (mostly the fathers) is a seriousproblem. Whenever volunteers visit such homes and have an opportunity to talk to the parents, theyindirectly suggest them to stop their habit of addiction. However, such suggestions do not havemuch impact. The reason is simple. Unless such person feels it from within, no change canhappen. This year, on 23rd Jan., Wardhinee celebrated Sankrant Utsav, its annual function. On this occasion,600 students and volunteers presented a mega show on the theme of ‘Oneness’ in society. Number

15

of incidents from history and cultural heritage, as well as some experiences from the present werestaged effectively. Parents of students and volunteers were also present at this function. After a period of two months of this program, one of the volunteers shared his experience how hisfather who lost his job due to his alcohol addiction, and disturbed the entire family life, has left hishabit. The father realized that his son, who is a volunteer of Wardhinee, was doing a great job. Thefurther also understood that good thinking and habits are imbibed at Wardhinee and his son is apart of that team. With this realisation, he felt that he must get rid of his drinking habit. That momentof his self-realization helped him to come out of his addiction. We are proud that we could become instrumental in bringing happiness back to this family.

Workshop organized by 'DE AASARA' (Xo Amgam)(Xo Amgam)(Xo Amgam)(Xo Amgam)(Xo Amgam)There are youths who have a dream to start their own business. The main hurdle in bringing thisdream into reality is availability of capital. Many financial institutions have funds, but their complicatedprocedures are a daunting task for any new-comer. DE AASARA is an NGO in Pune and is run withan objective to helping the youths to bring their business plans into reality.A workshop on “Guidance on Setting up Business” was organized on 17th August at WardhineeIn which 50 youths participated. Shri. Anil Pathak of DE AASARA interacted with the participants. Heresponded to the questions asked by the audience. During his speech, Shri. Pathak threw light onthe following points-• How to raise seed capital and funds required for day to day expenditure?• How to tackle the problem of skilled / unskilled human resources?Lokarpan of book on Bhoodan ChalwalOn April 18th 1951, the historic day of the very genesis of the Bhoodan movement, Vinoba enteredNalgonda district, the centre of Communist activity. The organizershad arranged Vinoba’s stay at Pochampalli, a large village withabout 700 families, of whom two-thirds were landless. Vinoba wentto visit the Harijan (the Untouchables) colony. The Harijans askedfor eighty acres of land, forty irrigated, forty unirrigated. For fortyfamilies that would be enough! Then Vinoba asked, ”If it is notpossible to get land from the government, is there not somethingthe villagers themselves could do?” To everyone’s surprise anddelight, Ram Chandra Reddy, the local landlord, got up & said in arather excited voice, “I will give you 100 acres for these people.” Athis evening prayer meeting, Ram Chandra Reddy got up & repeatedhis promise to offer 100 acres of land to the Harijans. This incident, neither planned nor imagined, was the very genesis of the Bhoodan movement andit made Vinoba think that therein lay the potential of solving the land problem of India.Vinoba led the movement to demand fifty million acres of land for the landless from the whole ofIndia by 1957. Thus a personal initiative took the form of a mass movement. This was indeed a veryremarkable achievement for a constructive work movement. The enthusiasm for the movementlasted till 1957 and thereafter it began to wane.Prof. Dr. Ganesh Raut, who is a volunteer of Wardhinee was conferred Ph.D. for his thesis onBhoodan Chalwal. He has written and published a book based on this subject which was dedicatedto people in a program organized at Wardhinee. Shri. Vivek Savant (Director-MKCL), Shri. PrashantKothadiya- (Social Worker - Azim Premji Foundation) and Shri. Satish Joshi (Social Worker) werepresent during the program.Samajik Rakshabandhana) As a part of celebrations of 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the festival of

Rakhipournima was observed as “Samajik Rakshabandhan”. Volunteers and students of

16

Wardhinee visited 2500 homes to spread the message of equality based society (SamatayuktSamaj). On this occasion, a sticker displaying a quotation from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar wasgiven to every family. People welcomed this concept of celebrating the festival of Rakshabandhan.

b) E Waste collection driveGlobal warming has acquired alarming proportions. In order to protect the environment, it hasnow become very important to spread the message of clean environment. Use of Electronicdevices has become so common, that people throw huge quantities of faulty devices and gadgetsdirectly into dustbins. It creates a serious pollution problem to the society at large. Socialorganizations in Pune decided to conduct an E-Waste Collection Drive on the occasion ofRakhipournima to educate the society and motivate them to deposit their E waste at a specificcollection point. ‘Swa’-Roopwardhinee participated in this drive. Through door to door campaignwe were able to reach and appeal to 1500 families to respond positively.

Demonetization & its aftereffectsOn 26th November, the Constitution Day, a special lecture was organized at Wardhinee. One of thetrustees of Arthkranti Pratishthan and noted journalist, Shri. Yamaji Malkar was invited to addressthe youths on the current issue of demonetization and its aftereffects. On 8th November this year, the Central Government announced that the currency notes ofRs.500/- and Rs.1000/- would not remain a legal tender with immediate effect. Since that momentevery Indian is very curious to understand what would happen to the Indian economy as a result ofdemonetization. Shri. Yamaji Malkar talked to the audience in great details. He strongly supportedthe decision of demonetization taken by the Central Government. He further explained that thismove will have multifarious effects - e.g. the threat of terrorism and black money shall reduce. Hesaid that Arthkranti Pratishthan has constantly been demanding demonetization. He also supportedthe Govt. efforts for encouraging the e- transactions. At the end of the program, the audience took thefollowing oath-v I shall never hold any specific faction responsible for any national issuev I shall never disgrace my nationv I shall do everything to set right the faulty system and shall start asking questions to the

system, as a step in this directionv I shall always insist for transaction in white money.Vibrations in the blooming minds ‘

Since 1979, the trust has been working primarily for needy students and women from underprivilegedsections of the society, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
