an extra. Members of the regular Junior Class are allowed to substitute
German for the Calculus.
An opportunity is also given for studying French, Spanish and Italian.
This department is under an instructor who spent ten years in the uni-
versities of Germany, a portion of the time as Professor of Modern Lan-
guages in the University of Jena.
Preparatory Department.
This department has been organized by the Board of Trustees of Centre
College. Its instructors are appointed by the Board, and a general super-
vision of the school is lodged with the College Faculty.
While the course of instruction is especially adapted to prepare youngmen for the Freshman Class, it is intended at the same time to furnish a
liberal English education to any who may desire it. A student in either
department is entitled, without additional charge, to all the privileges of the
other.
Tuition in the Preparatory Department is $35 per annum, payable semi-
annually, with five dollars extra for janitor's fee, fuel, etc.
Religious Instruction.
The recitations of each day are opened with the worship of God. Ahalf hour is devoted to religious instruction. Kecitations in the Bible, or
lectures on biblical and similar themes by the College pastor, are the mainfeatures of this instruction.
All students are expected to attend these services and also the public
preaching of the gospel, unless specially excused.
Lectures.
During the winter session of the present year, a lecture course was organ-
ized, and a series of lectures delivered by members of the Faculty and by
distinguished divines.
It is the intention to increase the number of these lectures and to embrace
within their scope the discussion of such scientific and literary topics as will
be profitable to the students.
The assistance of some of the best talent in Kentucky and elsewhere has
been bespoken, and the Faculty feel warranted in expressing the hope that
a course of lectures by men of eminence in the various professions will
hereafter form a permanent feature in the advantages of the College.
Examinations.
There are two public examinations of all the classes, one in the middle of
the College year and the other at the close, held before a committee of the
Synod, and conducted by each professor in his own department. These ex-
aminations are either oral or written, or both combined. The final exami-

nation of the Graduating Class is held four weeks before the close of the
session.
Degrees*
The degree of A. M. is conferred in course on every graduate of three
years' standing, who shall have sustained a good moral character and pur-
sued professional studies during the interval, and who shall have made appli-
cation for the degree one day or more previous to the Annual Commence-
ment.Commencement— Vacation.
The session opens on the first Monday of September and closes on the
last Thursday of June, on which day the Annual Commencement is held.
A recess is given during the Christmas holidays.
Tuition and Other Fees.
Tuition, including a contingent fee of five dollars, is fifty dollars per an-
num, payable semi-annually in advance. Those who enter two months after
the session has commenced are charged in proportion to the part which re-
mains.
The sons of ministers of the gospel of every denomination receive their
tuition free ; and the same privilege, under proper restriction, is extended
to all young men of limited means and good character. No one will be ex-
cluded because unable to pay the ordinary charge for instruction, but will be
welcome to all the privileges of the College without incurring pecuniary
obligation. The question of future compensation will be left optional with
each one.
The contingent fee of five dollars annually for janitor's hire, fuel in Col-
lege rooms, etc., is required of all.
Boarding.
The students board and lodge in private families, in which they enjoy the
advantages of Christian society and are thus preserved from many tempta-
tions. No fixed rate can be stated for the cost of living, as this varies with
the price of provisions, fuel, etc. During the current year, the prevailing
rates for board, including fuel, were from four dollars to five dollars per
week.Museum.
Through the liberality of Dr. John W. Scott, of Lexington, a series of
Ward's casts for illustrating zoology and palaeontology, and a large numberof minerals, have been added to the College Museum.
