WASATCH THEATRICAL VENTURES

company that presents great American plays – penned exclusively by American playwrights – at the highest artistic level, and at affordable

prices. We aim to ensure that great American theatre is available to all, not just those able to spend

productions.

In the playhouses WTV chooses every seat is a “premium” seat. The

short space between actors and audience creates a unique theatre

experience. This dynamic cannot be produced, at any price, in large halls or amphitheaters.WTV pursues its mission by presenting established American classics – e.g., Arthur

Miller’s All My Sons, the company’s inaugural production - to great new plays penned by the best American

modern playwrights – Theresa

All My Sons, 2010

Rebeck’s Our House. From Miller to Rebeck to Kesselman, WTV hopes to bring to life, again and anew, the

‘American canon.’ Fueled by a passion for American theatre, WTV is willing

of bringing acknowledged theatrical masterpieces, written by the best American playwrights, to the small stage, at small theatre prices, with

“great stage” production values – from the sets to the sound, the lighting

to the costumes, the accomplished actors to the professional directors. To borrow a phrase from the “father” of all playwrights: at WTV, “the play’s the thing.” As written and originally produced. No adaptations, editing, or corner-cutting of these timeless

explorations of American life.

And so,with this production, we continue. The co-chairs of WTV’s

honorary board are the prize-winning American playwright David Feldshuh (Miss Ever’s Boys), Director Emeritus of Cornell University’s Department of Theatre Arts, and Alaine Alldaffer, the prize-winning chief casting director of New York City’s famed Playwrights

Horizons Theatre, one of the nation’s great incubators of American

playwrights.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” –Edmund Burke

Prior to making your reservation for the play you are seeing tonight…had you heard anything about Andersonville Prison? The prison at Andersonville Georgia is a part of our history that we have chosen not to talk about. Why is that? It’s an historical site right in the heart of the south and the civil war. It’s been swept under the historical rug that covers the atrocities of the civil war. We know about Gettysburg and Sherman’s “scorched earth” campaign. But, why not Andersonville? In the mid-’70s I was on a tour that traveled through the south and several members of our cast drove by Andersonville Prison. But we were told almost nothing about Andersonville other than, the public tour wasn’t very good. I always wondered why. As I began my research in preparation for directing this play and saw the images, some of which are used in this production, I came to understand why noone speaks of Andersonville. This play, in large part is taken from the actual court records of the 1865 trial where a single man was tried for the war crimes of an entire nation. There is a line from the play where the defense attorney says “Even the sight of a tattered Confederate blouse is enough to cause riots in the streets.” And that’s understandable, for the time of the play is fresh on the heels of the end of the civil war and four months after President Lincoln’s assassination. But here we are 150 years later and the sight of the Confederate war flag which still flies over the capitols of some of our states is enough to cause riots in the streets. How can we expect to learn from that part of our past if we don’t talk about the horrors we all, North and South, participated in? In our desire or need to cover or sweep our terrible history under the rug are we doomed to revisit the hurts and expose the scars that still remain from 150 years ago? Those sores were never allowed to heal. Hopefully this play will expose the hurt and conflict from what has been termed America’s original sin and pull back the band aid of time so that we might, in some small way, begin once and for all seek forgiveness, give forgiveness and move forward while looking back to say to ourselves… never again.

JACK KENNEDY (Chandler)After being born with all his limbs, Jack felt an acting career was an obvious choice. His highly mediocre career includes doing some stage time with Martin Short and Jason Alexander and screen time with the likes of Forrest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley. JAN DAVID SOUTAR (Hosmer)Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Jan David Soutar has been described as a unique blend of southern hospitality with a bad boy intensity. He’s had leading & supporting roles in independent films “The Guide” and “Roulette” Network TV on Outsiders, Banshee and The Wire as well as writing, directing & producing his own projects. Jan David is also an amazing scavenger hunt planner & makes a mean earl grey sweet tea.

I love creating soundscapes of all sizes and love to be challenged by a production to come up with sounds that fit the action. To achieve this, I use sound effects, tones/drones even music under the scene to set a tone to complete the experience and make you “FEEL”. This is only a part of what I do as a Sound Designer. For information on my other audio services check out the website www.wavmagicaudio.com or you may call (818) 370 -8556 “Sound Changes the Way We See”.
