Grand Summus

4 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

Very Dear Brethren and Companions,

Firstly, may I welcome you all to this historic and unique Masonic occasion. The Inauguration of any Masonic

Order is by its nature very special and I trust that the warm recollection of today’s events will remain with you for

many years to come.

From a personal perspective, I feel immensely

proud to have been designated Grand Summus

and you may be sure that during my time in that

office I shall do everything possible to maximise

the enjoyment and satisfaction of every one of

our Scarlet Cord Companions.

As you may imagine, today’s Inauguration is

the result of many months of preparation and

hard work by a large number of people, building

on the previous initiative and inspiration of my

predecessor as Grand Supreme Ruler, Most

Worthy Brother Peter Glyn Williams, to whom

we will always be indebted.

I am most grateful to Brian Wareham and

Andrew Sweeney, who are to be my Deputy and

Assistant for their support and encouragement

and to all those on the various committees

and sub-committees whose industry and

dedication has been instrumental in bringing this

Inauguration to fruition. Their work is detailed

later in the brochure as a record for the future.

Thanks are due to the Provincial and District

Grand Supreme Rulers both at home and

abroad and their teams for their efforts in setting

up Scarlet Cord Conclaves throughout the

Constitution. You may be interested to know

that at the time of printing this brochure the

number of Scarlet Cord Conclaves stood at 64

with a membership in excess of 2,500.

I would also like to place on record my

grateful thanks to the Grand Recorder and his

team at Mark Masons’ Hall who have worked

tirelessly and patiently in the months leading

up to today’s Inauguration and of course our

thanks to Freemasons’ Hall for providing a

superb venue for such an historic Masonic

occasion.

Finally, my special thanks to all of you for your

wonderful support in making today possible. As

we begin this new Masonic journey together, it

is my most earnest hope that the Scarlet Cord

will continue to be synonymous with fraternal

union and Masonic excellence.

July 2010

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 7

In response to the interest shown by Brethren, in their questions when visiting Conclaves in the

Provinces, I am going to talk to you about an Order developed in the British Isles in 1889 which

was founded upon ancient 18th Century documents from the Amsterdam Masonic archives.

The rituals and ceremonies were rewritten and enriched by one of the authors of the three

rituals currently used in our Secret Monitor ceremonies. I refer, of course, to His Honour Judge

Frederick Adolphus Philbrick, K.C., and the Royal Order of Knights of the Scarlet Cord.

Actively involved with Philbrick in the embryo stages of this appendant rite were several other

founders of our Grand Conclave, Dr Issachar Zacharie Colonel Shadwell Clerke, Grand Secretary of

the Craft, General Charles Randolph, PGW, Colonel Sir Francis Burdett, Charles Fitzgerald Matier,

Grand Secretary of the Mark, Richard Ede, W G Lemon, James Lewis Thomas and William Joseph

Spratling; also Japheth Tickle, the D.R. of the Order, the Earl of Warwick, the Earl of Londesborough,

the Earl of Halsbury, Lord Methuen, Charles Edward Keyser, The Maharajah of Cooch Behar, H H

Nawab Waheed-ud-deen Khan Bahadur, H H Nawab Najib-ud-deen, J Waldie Pearson, Chancellor of

the Diocese of Pretoria; C J Higgs, Madras; Frank Chatterton, Kerala; and many other distinguished

Secret Monitors from Bangalore, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Natal, Transvaal, Burma, and the British

Isles

Candidates for membership of The Royal Order of Knights of the Scarlet Cord were required

to be Princes of the Order, and holders of a special Badge showing membership of the Fund of

Benevolence of the Order of the Secret Monitor, a requirement I shall enlarge upon in due course.

Further than this there was no bar to admission, except the usual ballot. Members were of six

classes or Grades.

(1) The “Elected” (Companions) called Ostiarii, or Doorkeepers C.S.C.

(2) The “Chosen” (Readers) called Lectores or Readers R.S.C.

(3) The “Promoted” (Fellows) called Exorcists or Healers F.S.C.

(4) The “Preferred” (Court of Assistants) called Courtly Companion C.C.S.C.

(5) The “Dedicated” (Revered Companions) called High Priests H.P.S.C.

(6) The “Installed” (Knightly Companions) called Knights K.C.S.C.

The Knights of the Royal Order, the High Priests, and the Court of Assistants together formed

the “Court of the Confedarati”, and when attended by the officers appointed, the assembly was

denominated the “Senatus”. Presiding over all these Grades was the “Summus” in his office of Chief

A History of the Ancient and Masonic Order of the

Scarlet CordAddress to the Supreme Rulers’ Conclave No.123 at Mark Masons’ Hall on Friday, 8th June, 2001: A History of the

Royal Order of Masonic Knights of the Scarlet Cord delivered by Most Worthy Brother P. G. Williams, PGSR

Most Distinguished Brother

Peter Glyn Williams

Peter Glyn Williams has, over a period of many

years, made an immense contribution to almost

every order of Masonry and in particular those

administered from Mark Masons’ Hall.

He is particularly remembered for his nine

years as Grand Secretary at Mark Masons’

Hall from 1987 to 1996 and subsequently as

Grand Supreme Ruler of the Order of the Secret

Monitor from 1997 to 2009.

Under Peter Glyn Williams’ guidance and

due in no small measure to his astute and

charismatic leadership, the Order of the Secret

Monitor enjoyed significant growth both at

home and abroad during his term as Grand

Supreme Ruler.

The Inauguration of the Scarlet Cord has only

been made possible by virtue of Peter’s original

inspired vision of bringing the Order back into

mainstream Freemasonry and every member

of both the Order of the Secret Monitor and

the Scarlet Cord owes him an immense debt

of gratitude for all that he has done for both

Orders.

It is therefore with the very greatest pleasure

that we have printed the following History of the

Order of the Scarlet Cord, written and delivered

by Most Worthy Brother Peter Glyn Williams

at the meeting of Supreme Rulers’ Conclave

No.123 at Mark Masons’ Hall on Friday 8th

or “Diaconus” was filled.

All the other Officers were selected from the “Court of Assistants” but there were Junior Officers

who were generally chosen from the Consistories. The High Officers all had to be within easy access of

London, and it was the same with the other working Officers, but it was the custom to appoint as Deputy

Officers five Companions who were domiciled overseas. All offices were yearly appointments, and for

so long as it pleased the “Summus” to re-appoint the same Companion. It was clearly understood,

however, that any Officer who was absent from two consecutive meetings, and had not attended the

annual assembly for rehearsal, would not be reappointed without the special recommendation of the

“Court of Assistants”. Which was very rarely exercised.

Philbrick and a group of enthusiasts, first worked the first meeting of the Royal Order of the Scarlet

Cord with its spectacular ceremonial, exotic regalia and dress requirements, in 1889, with all the panache

and pomp of an Indian Durbar or State occasion. It was a full dress assembly of the whole Senatus

and Confedarati, and as a foretaste of what was to follow it certainly whet the appetites of the Grand

Originals who were present. The working of the various Grades with its intricate structure, however, had

to take place in Consistories and their development in the British Isles and in Territories Overseas took

some time to come to fruition.

Let us now return to the Benevolent Fund Badge requirement. The Secret Monitor Benevolent

Fund was founded in 1901, and took its fund-raising activities to such a high level of sophistication

that, with virtually no donations to the fund for the past sixty years or so, its assets today still stand at

approximately £300,000. Scripture informs us that in the army of King David there were three bands of

Worthies over which Joab, Zadok and Banaiah presided respectively.

These three chiefs are represented in the Fund by the three wings of the original scheme, namely:

Joab, Chief of the Centre – department for Old Age

Zadok, Chief of the Right Wing – department for Sickness

Banaiah, Chief of the Left Wing – department for Education

Each Wing had its own special charity badge according to the donation made.

(1) Education Left Wing; White Badge – Design sloping to the left.

Membership – Any Brother or Lady donating one guinea became a member of this wing and was

entitled to wear the badge. Its funds were expended in furthering the education of children of Secret

Monitors either by grants in aid, prizes for excellent work and conduct, or by collecting votes for the

Masonic Schools in order to further the election of candidates whose fathers are or were members of the

Order. This wing was arranged in two columns, one dealing with boys and the other dealing with girls.

Progress in the wing – one guinea per step.

(2) Sickness Right Wing; Red Badge – Design sloping to the right.

of the “Senatus” in the Court of the “Confedarati”. It was to this body that all regulations were submitted,

(when approved by the Court of Assistants), and if there sanctioned, the “Ordinances” of the “Court of

the Confedarati” became “Statutes of the Order”, and, thus, binding upon the whole body of “Prince

Masons”. Each “Prince Mason” was styled a Companion, but he may become entitled to the appellation

“Courtly”. “Revered” or “Knightly” according to his Office or seniority.

Members of the Court of Assistants were either “Acolytes” of High Priests, or “Aides de Camp” of

Knights, and if the latter, they were appointed to a command, when qualified, and then wore the red

epaulettes. Should they attain to the Presidency of the “Court of Assistants” they were entitled to wear

“Golden Epaulettes”. All Members of the Court of Assistants wore a Garter of nobility and a handsome

Jewel, with a collarette of ribbon varying with their rank

The first three Grades of the Order met in a “Consistory” and such a Consistory was warranted for

any Province or District of the Order of the Secret Monitor. A Sub-Consistory was an offshoot from a full

Consistory, and in a large geographical area would usually be set up in a neighbourhood distant from the

main big city location for the convenience of its members, but could work only in Grades (1) and (2), and

was subject to all the rules and regulations prescribed by the Consistory of which it formed a part.

Consistories and Sub-Consistories were severely restricted in the number of subscribing members,

which could not, in any event, exceed Fifteen for Grade (1), Eleven for Grade (2) and Nine for Grade (3);

but there were certain arrangements for supernumerary and Honorary members subject to the assent

of the “Court of Assistants” of the Order, in every case. Members of a higher Grade were not precluded

from taking part in the ceremonies of Grades below their own Grade. Grades higher than the third were

not worked out of London, unless by command of the “Summus” it was desired to institute a moveable

“Court of Assistants” for any special purpose.

The Senatus met annually on the day before the meeting of the Grand Conclave of the Order, and

at that convocation new Knights were invested and installed. The Court of Assistants met twice a year

on the day afore-mentioned, and upon a day in November whose date varied with the Benevolent Fund

Festival of the Order of the Secret Monitor. At either of those meetings proposals for preferment were

received and dealt with. A Sanhedrim for dedicating a High Priest was called when desired under the

authority of the “Court”. All applications for the Higher Grades had to be made through the Registrar of

the “Court of the Senatus”.

All members of the Court or Senatus had to appear in Court dress or in the uniform of a commissioned

officer of His Majesty’s Forces. A Companion holding office as Lord Lieutenant, or Deputy Lieutenant,

could appear in the uniform belonging thereto, and permission was usually granted to members who

desired to wear other official uniform. Ordinary evening dress, however, was not sufficient for members

of either “Court” but it was de rigeur for Junior Officers. Companions from India were invited to appear

in the costume which they would wear at a function in the presence of Royalty in their own native State.

Diplomatic uniforms were also permissible.

All members of the Royal Order of the Scarlet Cord were admitted to the Senatus, but they had to be

in Court, or evening dress at least. At the Convocation of the “Senatus”, not only were Knights invested

and installed, but it was the pleasure of the “Summus” annually to “anoint” some Companion who had

attained to that rank, and it was from those so anointed that any vacancy in the office of “Episcopus”

Progress in the Division – five guineas personal, or ten guineas collected, per step

There were nine steps in each Division with each step entitling the donor to a specified number of votes

3. – Bearing garter with Three, sword, and Hat with feather.

4. – Bringing an Esquire bearing banneret with Coat of Arms and Jewel of a Knight.

It was also desirable:

1. – To provide a Knightly Robe and Scarlett Cord.

Meetings of the Court of Assistants, the Senatus and the Confedarati were convened on the day before

the meeting of the Grand Council and Grand Conclave Festival, and when these days coincided with a

Benevolent Fund Festival the whole three-day convention was designated a Grand Festival. I referred

earlier to the slow development of Consistories in which, you will recall, the first three Grades were

worked. During the relatively short life of the Order there was only one Consistory in the British Isles – the

Metropolitan Consistory – which met at10, Duke Street. Sub-Consistories, which could only work the first

two Grades, existed in the North of England, in South Africa, in Central India, in Madras and in Burma.

The rituals were based on incidents in the Wars of the Maccabees, and the ceremonies were elaborate

with high-sounding titles for the High Officers. The Metropolitan Consistory worked regularly until 1914,

went into abeyance for the period 1914-1918, was revived in 1919 but ceased operations in 1929. In that

year it was resolved that “All ceremonial work in connection with the Royal Order of Knights of the Scarlet

Cord should cease.

Chapter 2 in the Book of Joshua relates, in detail, the events on which the Order is based and, prior

to revision of the Princes Degree, most of the story was required to be read as a charge to the candidate

being Admitted. It is essentially one of mutual help and the Benevolent Fund, the particular interest of

Philbrick, was instituted to help those of the Order of the Secret Monitor in time of need. The Royal Order of

Knights of the Scarlet Cord was unquestionably designed to increase membership and, being inextricably

linked to the Benevolent Fund Badge system, the financial power of the Fund.

14 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

At the meeting of No. 1 Conclave, no less than thirty new members were admitted, including Lord

Halsbury, P.G.W. Craft, a renowned scholar, Lord Chancellor of England (who, it is recorded, “left the

woolsack to attend the meeting”); the Rt.Hon. the Earl of Warwick, Dep.G.M. of the Craft; Sir Francis

Burdett, Prov.G.M., Middlesex Craft; Sir Morel’ Mackenzie, a distinguished laryngologist; Rear-Admiral

R. C. Mayne, C.B., M.P.; Sir J. Monckton, P.G.W. Craft; and many other high-ranking Freemasons.

On the same day (July 15) University of London Conclave No.2 was founded, with His Honour Judge

F. A. Philbrick as first Supreme Ruler, the warrant was dated September 15, 1887.

The first Constitutions of the Order, drafted by Judge Philbrick and adopted at the first meeting of

Grand Council in 1887.

Searching the Lodge Returns to the Clerk of the Peace at Chelmsford (required under the Geo.III

Sedicious Oaths Act.) we find that the returns for the 5th February 1895 show that F. A. Philbrick was

second in the list of members for two Lodges. Three Friends and the Lodge of Gooodfelowship No. 276

meeting at the White Hart Hotel Chelmsford. Unfortunately, the Secretary has recorded his second name

as Arthur. The first member listed for these two Lodges is The Right Honourable the Earl of Warwick.

It may be speculated that Philbrick and Warwick were well acquainted through the Mark and Secret

Monitor degrees, and maybe founders of both Lodges.

There is an interesting record of a document, signed by Queen Victoria, granting permission for

Frederick Adolphus Philbrick Esq., licence to plead on behalf of J. R. Nash in his trial for perjury.

(Obituary - Judge Frederick Philbrick - Philatelist - London Philatelic Society)

DEATH OF JUDGE PHILBRICK.

With the deepest regret we have to record the death of His Honour Judge Frederick Adolphus

Philbrick, K. C., which took place at Colchester on Dec. 25, [1912] at the age of seventy-five.

This sad news will be received throughout the entire philatelic world with the most profound sorrow and

appreciation of the great services rendered to philately by Judge Philbrick.

The sad intimation of his death having only reached us on the point of publication, we are compelled

to defer until our next issue a full appreciation of the important role played by Judge Philbrick in British

philately. As the first Vice President and second President of the London Philatelic Society, and as the

acknowledged leader of the pursuit for many years in this country, Judge Philbrick’s name will always be

honoured and remembered as one of the greatest in the history of philately. - London Philatelist. Judge

Philbrick was one of the veterans of our hobby. Born in 1836, the eldest son of Frederick B. Philbrick,

of Colchester, he was educated at London University, became a barrister of the Middle Temple in 1860,

and ‘took silk’ in 1874. He became Recorder of his native town of Colchester, and ultimately, after a busy

career at the Bar, he was appointed to a County Court judgeship in 1895.

As a philatelist, Judge Philbrick’s name will live in the annals of our hobby as that of the joint author of

“Philbrick & Westoby.” He made many fine collections, and he had had through his hands, at one time or

another, nearly all the great rarities known to the catalogue. By reason of his strong personality, his past

association with the London Philatelic Society, and his connection as a lawyer with more than one of the

causes celèbres of the stamp world, he will not readily be forgotten by the philatelic fraternity.

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 15

In the 1861 Census, our Frederick Philbrick was a Queens

Councillor and living at Oldfield Bickley Park, Kent. He was by

then a widower and living with his three daughters, Madeline,

Evelyn and Edith, together with a Governess and six servants,

two of whome were Swiss!

Grandparents of Frederick Adolphus were Samual Philbrick

and Mary Blomfield who had nine children and were based in

Colchester Essex (Mary’s father was Bazaleel Blomfield).

Frederick married Jemima Caroline Cockburn in 1870. They

raised two boys, Earnest and Arthur both of whom went to

school at Rugby, and three girls two of whom were unmarried

in 1901 and living with their father in Colchester. In 1881 the

Philbricks were living at Oldfield Bickley Park, Bromley, Kent. The Census of that year records:-

Frederick A. Philbrick Head W 44 Queens Councellor (in practice)

Madeline F. E. Dau 8 Scholar

Evelyn C.M. Dau 7 Scholar

Edith C.C. Dau 3

Eliza Thelwall Serv W 48 Housekeeper

Amy Taylor Gov 28 Governess

Constant Chapin Serv 25 Valet (Switzerland)

Mery Chapins Serv 27 Cook (Switzerland)

Jane Bailey Serv 21 Nurse

Beatrice Parkinson Serv 40 Housemaid

Eliza Batchelor Serv 17 Under housemaid

The two boys were away at boarding school and from the address and the number of servants

Frederick had, it is reasonable to assume that he was comparatively well off.

The first Festival of the Order [Secret Monitor] was held at the Hotel Victoria, Northumberland Avenue,

London, S.W. on July 15, 1887. It was also the first meeting of Alfred Meadows Conclave No. 1, which

having worked without a warrant until the following November was then issued with its warrant.

Judge Augustus Adolphus Philbrick QC, a Notable Scarlet Cord Mason -

Frederick Adolphus Philbrick was born on the 20th June 1835 and Christened at Lion Walk Meeting-House

Colchester on the 6th August 1835. His father was Frederick Blomfield Philbrick (Born 7 Oct 1810, birthplace given

as Saint Mary At The Wall, Colchester) and his mother was Judith Sheldrake.

interests have stayed with him throughout

the whole of his life and for the last ten years

he has maintained a good level of fitness by

way of regular visits to a health club where he

undertakes an exercise regime, backed up by

half-mile swims.

In 1959 Michael graduated with honours

from Birmingham University. He then took

professional Articles and qualified as a

Chartered Accountant in 1963. He served as

a Senior Manager in a large international firm

including brief periods overseas in France,

Germany and the Irish Republic. He then

became a partner in a medium sized firm

before setting up his own firm in 1985. Using

the experience gained in the earlier parts

of his career he specialised in insolvency /

corporate recovery, business strategy and

tax consultancy. Michael is now retired from

business and able to give even more time to

his many interests.

Michael met Ann (who was later to become

his wife) in 1961 at a dance; at the time Ann

was a young student nurse. He actually

proposed to Ann on the day that he received

the successful results of his final professional

examination in July 1963 which meant that

his salary had increased to £950 p.a.; they

married the following year on 29th February

1964 (a leap year) at St. Nicholas Church in

Newport, Shropshire. Their first son Simon

arrived two years later in 1966, Martin in 1968

and Andrew in 1970. All three have University

Degrees and are married with successful

careers. Ann returned to her nursing career

when family commitments made it possible,

and subsequently took a degree course

which qualified her for a new career as a

health visitor.

This year Michael and Ann have

celebrated 46 years of marriage. They

are now Grandparents to two wonderful

Michael Guest – A Biography

MICHAEL GUEST - THE MAN

Michael William Guest was born in Moseley,

Birmingham in May 1938 and was later elder

brother to triplets. His Paternal Grandfather

and forbears owned and managed a small

family Brewery (situated on top of one of the

artesian wells which fostered the Midlands

Brewing Trade). Unfortunately the Brewery

had to be sold in the early 1920’s when

both grandparents died suddenly, leaving 5

orphaned children to be brought up by their

grandmother. His mother’s side were an

artistic family with his grandfather originally

a professional actor whose career was

halted by the Great War and exposure to

mustard gas. One of his aunts was an

amateur painter who exhibited locally, his

grandmother enjoyed oil painting and one

uncle was a writer, novelist and poet.

Michael was educated at King Edward’s

School Birmingham. He enjoyed both the

academic, social and sporting elements of

school life including rugby, cricket, tennis,

swimming, eton fives, rifle shooting and the

school choral and amateur dramatic societies.

The strong sporting and social aspects

which formed an important part of Michael’s

early school days clearly did not impact too

seriously on his academic studies, as he

achieved ‘A’ and ‘S’ levels in History, English

and Geography. Preferring a career in business

rather than in teaching he opted for a practical

Degree Course in Commerce (Law, languages

and business studies) at Birmingham University,

rather than perhaps the more aesthetic delights

of reading English at Oxford.

Michael’s time at Birmingham University was

indeed a happy one but as an impoverished

student it was never easy making ends

meet and the University Territorial Army Unit

provided both enjoyment and stimulation and

a small additional income. Michael trained and

qualified as a parachutist, took his commission

and served (inter alia) with the T.A. unit of a

certain special services Regiment

One of the things which seems to have

been with Michael since his school days is the

ability to fit 28 hours into a 24 hour day, as

not content with undertaking the rigours of a

degree course at University, together with his

duties with the Territorial Army Unit, he also

managed to play some pretty serious Rugby

for the Old Edwardians as well as Tennis, Golf

and later Badminton. Clearly Michael’s sporting

the Man and the Mason...

Units and has achieved 29 Masonic Chairs. In

addition he is an Honorary member of 58

Masonic Units.

Over the years Michael has undertaken 16

overseas Masonic Tours / Visits of between 4

days and 4 weeks.

Brethren and Companions, in compiling this

Biography of our new Grand Summus, I have

been staggered by the sheer commitment

and industry that Michael has demonstrated

in a Masonic Career which to date spans

some 34 years, and let us not forget he was

not Initiated until he was 38 years of age. The

sheer breadth of Masonic involvement and the

work that involvement entails is breathtaking

and as someone who has been the recipient

of Michael’s ritual I can tell you it is always

superbly delivered.

He has managed in those 34 years in

Masonry to build a successful career and at the

same time care for and give time to the most

precious thing in his life – his family.

There is absolutely no doubt that we have

in Michael Guest a Grand Summus with the

very highest credentials, those of humility,

pragmatism, dedication and humanity.

Let us all wish him well in his new role as

well as the good health to lead our Order for

many years to come.

Keith Waters,

President of the Executive Committee

18 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

Michael somehow manages to squeeze in

a number of other hobbies, apart from his

Masonry, including the Times and Telegraph

Crossword puzzles (originally undertaken during

the less absorbing University lectures) and su-

doku. His languages although now quite rusty

include French, German and Portuguese.

His long term love of canals and other

inland waterways has included setting up and

managing a narrow boat hire company in the

1970’s. Country walking particularly in the Lake

District and Holiday Property Bond areas has

always been high on Michael’s Agenda.

Michael’s life would not be complete without

music and although his tastes are reasonably

catholic, he has a fondness for Classical

Music especially Mozart and a number of

Russian composers. An aspect of his life that is

perhaps not widely known is that Michael still

enjoys playing the piano occasionally, despite

insufficient time for practice.

Michael has always been an avid reader; this

together with his renowned memory probably

accounts for his ability to cope with most

Masonic ritual. However one suspects that

ritual books have usually taken precedence

over literature in recent years.

Michael’s application to join masonry was

deferred for a number of years to enable him to

devote time to family duties and to developing

his business career until in April 1976 he

was Initiated into Lodge of Truth No. 6606 in

Warwickshire. The full details of his Masonic

Career are shown in the Appendix at the end

of the article.

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 39

The Tzaddikim is the personal ‘Body Guard’ of the Grand Summus, and discharges duties in a similar

manner to the Grand Supreme Ruler’s Arch of Steel. The oral tradition of Judaism in its written form is

the Talmud. The teachings of Abbaye and others stated that the world would need at least 36 righteous

people to exist. The word ‘Tzaddikim’ means righteous persons’; the singular of Tzaddikim being

Tzaddik.

The teachings of Abbaye discuss these 36 Righteous people and what would be the consequences

if at any one time the number 36 was not fulfilled, could the world be re-deemed? The Jewish religion

teaches us that there are always not less than 36 Tzaddikim or Righteous people in the world and they

receive the Shekinah. In simplistic terms they protect the Jewish people in time of trouble. The identity

of the ‘Tzaddikim’ always remains concealed.

In later Kabbalistic folklore the thirty six righteous ones, here being called hidden ones, have the

potential to save the world, they appear when they are needed, and one of them might be the Messiah.

They come at times of great peril, called out of their anonymity and humility by the necessity to save

the world.

The word Kabbalah comes from the Hebrew meaning ‘to receive or to accept’. The word is usually

translated as ‘tradition’. The English word “cabal” (a secret group of conspirators) is derived from the

Hebrew word Kabbalah; and it has a dark connection. This is not so in Judaism. Perhaps the best way

that I can describe Kabbalah is as ‘Esoteric Judaism, perhaps Jewish Mysticism, but using wisdom for

the seeking of fulfilment’. The Kabbalah asks us to imagine if there is a miraculous source of power so

profound, so powerful, it could totally heal and transform your life and change the world for good. It

argues it is the oldest and most influential wisdom in all of human history. Spiritual and physical laws

that govern the cosmos and human soul are revealed; providing solutions and unravelling puzzles;

creating order out of chaos. The source of the Kabbalah is the ancient book of Zohar. Some historians

claim that the Zohar is the authentic ‘Holy Grail’.

The qualities that make a ‘Tzaddik’ or Righteous Person are that he must be a just, faithful and upright

person; he must refrain from wrongdoing and make an effort to establish what is right. The marks of a

righteous man, according to Jewish thinking, are the sincerity of purpose and the strenuous endeavour

to accomplish it. The righteous man who has fallen into sin is distinguished by his repentance. Those

who are members of the Grand Summus’ Tzaddikim undertake much responsibility but in every way

fulfil the criteria laid down all those years ago.

The choice of the name of the Grand Summus’ bodyguard was the subject of much discussion

at Way Forward Committee meetings. After much debate Peter Rollin proposed that the bodyguard

should be called ‘The Tzaddikim’. How appropriate and what an inspired choice.

O enter then his gates with praise,

Approach with joy his courts unto;

CharitiesThe Grand Summus, Most Distinguished Companion Michael Guest, being well aware of the strong charitable

aspects of the Scarlet Cord and in particular the very generous charitable contributions made by our Companions

in recent years, has decided to mark the Inauguration of the Order on 21st. July 2010 with two substantial

donations to non-Masonic Charities.

The Charities he has selected to receive these donations are Rainbow Trust and the Alzheimers Society. Representatives

of both Charities have been invited to join us at the Banquet following the Inauguration, at which time the Grand Summus

will make the presentations.

To highlight the work of the Charities concerned we are delighted to include a brief outline of their work, together with

their aims and objectives. I hope that you will all agree that both of these Charities are fully deserving of our support.

WHAT WE DO

Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity provides practical and emotional support to families when

their child has a life threatening or terminal illness. Our support lasts from diagnosis throughout

treatment, to bereavement or recovery and beyond. Immediate help is on hand through our eight

teams of Family Support Workers operating from bases across the country.

Rainbow Trust’s Family Support Workers join the family in their own home and are there to

provide whatever practical support is needed. They may attend hospital appointments with

parents, sit by the bedside of the sick child to give parents a break and take worried siblings

out for the day.

HOW YOUR FUNDRAISING MAKES A DIFFERENCE

The money you raise for Rainbow Trust will be spent where it is most needed; here are some

examples of how you will make a difference:

£10 creates an arts and craft session

£20 pays for a sick child and their family to attend a hospital appointment

£150 pays for a day trip for a worried and lonely sibling

£500 covers one month’s running costs of our 24 hour telephone helpline

£800 pays for 44 hours of care from a Family Support Worker

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

AT WHAT POINT IN A CHILD’S ILLNESS DOES RAINBOW TRUST BECOME INVOLVED?

We can be contacted for support at any stage of illness, from diagnosis, during treatment and

throughout bereavement. Very importantly, there is no time limit to the care we provide.

HOW DO FAMILIES APPLY FOR HELP?

You may apply by telephone or in writing. Once this application has been made, an assessment

visit will be arranged, where individual circumstances are discussed and paperwork is kept to

a minimum.

HOW DO FAMILIES GET INTRODUCED TO RAINBOW TRUST?

Families are referred to Rainbow Trust, this referral may come from any source, provided it is

with the knowledge and agreement of the family, or directly from the family itself.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE FAMILIES FOR CARE?

Rainbow Trust does not charge for its service. All care is given free of charge.

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 67

The Re-emergence of the Order

In 2004 I was appointed by the Grand Supreme Ruler, Most Worthy Brother Peter Glyn Williams

as President of the Executive Committee of the OSM and at one of the Executive Committee

Meetings a Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler submitted a request for the OSM Benevolent Fund

to make a donation to a local charity which the Province was supporting. The Grand Treasurer,

on being asked if we could afford to support this charity to the tune of say £1,000, informed us

that the OSM Benevolent Fund had just over £600,000 in the bank. He also informed us that,

although we regularly supported petitions from distressed OSM members, mainly from Districts

overseas, the interest on our capital always outweighed our outgoings. We of course supported

the application.

The question was then asked if we could fund-match other Provinces and Districts donations

to charity up to a maximum of £1,000 per annum. The Grand Treasurer then expressed his concern

that if every one of the then forty Provinces and Districts took up the idea, we would start eating

into our capital.

So it was then suggested that it might be an idea to revive the Order responsible for our healthy

bank balance. This was considered by the Executive Committee and the then Grand Supreme

Ruler and I were charged with investigating the feasibility of such a project. Many months were

spent searching through papers in Mark Masons’ Hall and Freemasons’ Hall until the Grand

Supreme Ruler decided that we should proceed with the idea.

In the course of our researches, we found that some of the rituals were out of date and would

not work in today’s Masonic environment. They had to be edited. Others had to be totally rewritten

as they were only found in part, or not at all. However documented evidence gave us some clues

as to the tenor and content of the original ritual.

By December 2006 we were able to consecrate Scarlet Cord Conclave No.500 and on the same

day the founders received the First Grade. An emergency meeting of No.500 was then held to

introduce the Provincial Grand Supreme Rulers and the Order then became open to other Secret

Monitors who were recommended by their Provincial Grand Supreme Rulers

Although the original idea was to have just one conclave, based at Mark Masons’ Hall, which

would be responsible for bringing brethren into the Order of the Scarlet Cord, it was soon realised

that this was not practicable. The Order grew at such a rate that it was decided to allow Provinces

to form a Scarlet Cord Conclave with a view to introducing brethren into the first three Grades of

the Order at a local level.

At the OSM Executive meeting in April 2009 I was asked to put together a small steering

committee to decide on how the Order should best progress as an Order appended to the OSM.

66 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

The re-emergence of the Order of the Scarlet Cord and the work of the

The Original Concept of the Order

Two years after the Inauguration of the Order of the Secret Monitor in 1887, a senior Secret Monitor,

His Honour Judge Philbrick, came up with an idea which was intended to protect the welfare of the

members and give the Order considerable charitable status.

It is thought that the writers of the Secret Monitor ritual had, in the early days, incorporated in

the second degree of the Order, several paragraphs relating the story of how Rahab, the Harlot, had

assisted Joshua’s spies in their endeavours to estimate the military defences of the city of Jericho

before the Israelite army proceeded to attack it. (The story was certainly included in the ritual in the

early days of the last century.)

Judge Philbrick’s idea was that an Order, based on this story, should be created where Secret

Monitors would be admitted to its various grades in accordance with how much money they had

contributed to the various elements of the OSM Benevolent Fund.

The various elements were as follows:

(1). Education of Orphans

On the donation of one guinea a brother would be entitled to wear a white badge and, if he was a

Prince of the OSM, he would be entitled to seek membership to the Order. To progress would cost

one guinea per step.

(2). Sickness and Convalescence

On the donation of ten guineas a brother would be entitled to wear a red badge and, be entitled to

seek membership to a higher grade in the Order. To progress would cost two guineas per step.

(3). Help the Aged.

On the donation of twenty guineas a brother would be entitled to wear a blue badge and, be entitled to

seek membership above the third grade in the Order. To progress would cost five guineas per step.

Let’s put these figures in perspective. In 1889 a coal miner earned an average wage of twenty

shillings a week, so you can imagine this Order of Freemasonry was only enjoyed by the very wealthy.

Hence the reason why most of the then Grand Officers were aristocrats and prominent members of

society.

In 1929 the Order of the Scarlet Cord ceased to function and the reference to Rahab disappeared

from the second degree ritual book. However the money collected continued to gain interest and offer

relief to distressed Secret Monitors.

Way Forward Committee

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 69

On the day of the Inauguration all Scarlet Cord Conclaves will become Consistories. The

Supreme Rulers of these Conclaves will become Presidents of the Consistories. (I will enlarge on

this later)

2. The Order will be ruled by a Grand Summus who will have a Deputy and Assistant and a

full structure of Grand Officers.

To maintain the connection with the OSM the committee recommended that the Grand Supreme

Ruler should hold the office of Grand Summus at least for the time being.

3. The Order will be divided into Provinces and Districts Overseas.

In the first instance the Provinces and Districts will mirror current Order of the Secret Monitor

Provinces and Districts. Two or more current Order of the Secret Monitor Provinces may

amalgamate to form one Scarlet Cord Province.

4. A Province or District with three or more consistories will be controlled by a Provincial or

District Grand Summus.

A Provincial or District Grand Summus will be entitled to a Deputy, an Assistant and a full officer

structure. He will represent the Grand Summus within his Province or District and be able to

appoint Provincial or District Grand Officers in accordance with the Constitutions and Regulations.

A Provincial or District Grand Summus will be designated as a Right Distinguished Companion.

5. A Province or District with one or two consistories will be controlled by an Inspector.

A Province/District with less than three Consistories will be under the direction of a Grand

Inspector, he will be assisted by a Provincial or District Grand Recorder and a Provincial or District

Grand Director of Ceremonies. A Grand Inspector will be designated as a Very Distinguished

Companion. As soon as an Inspectorate has three consistories the Grand Summus will then

appoint and invest a Provincial or District Grand Summus who will be entitled to appoint a Deputy,

Assistant and full officer structure.

6. Any Secret Monitor Province or District with no Scarlet Cord conclave on the day of the

Inauguration will be considered barren.

Any secret monitor in a barren Province or District is free to join a consistory in another Province

or District or indeed Scarlet Cord Consistory TI., which will be unattached. It is hoped that such

companions will then join together to form a consistory in that barren Province, this will then

immediately entitle them to a Grand Inspector.

7. Appointment of Provincial or District Grand Summi and Inspectors.

It is recommended that all Provincial Grand Supreme Rulers with three or more Scarlet Cord

Conclaves in their Province or District will be appointed to the office of Provincial or District Grand

Summus. Those with less than three Conclaves will become a Grand Inspector. However, if it is

68 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

The original steering committee consisted of:

R.Wy.Bro. Brian Wareham (Chairman).

M.Wy Bro. Peter Glyn Williams (Grand Supreme Ruler).

R.Wy.Bro. Andrew Sweeney (Prov. G.S.R.).

R.Wy.Bro. John Brackley (Grand Recorder).

R.Wy.Bro. Roy Leavers (Grand Director of Ceremonies).

V.Wy.Bro. Angus Hannagan (Grand Treasurer).

V.Wy.Bro. Peter Rollin (Grand Registrar).

The first couple of meetings were just brainstorming sessions when ideas were generated and

discussed with a view to deciding on a way forward. As we progressed some ideas were at first adopted

and then on second thoughts discarded.

The main thing we had to decide upon was, should the Order of the Scarlet Cord remain attached to

the Order of the Secret Monitor like the Appendent Orders in the Red Cross of Constantine, or should

it stand alone as does the Royal Ark Mariner from the Mark. We began to investigate the feasibility of

splitting the Order from the Order of the Secret Monitor and making it a separate Order in its own right.

This was considered by all to be, by far, the best option.

The committee by this time had been named the ‘Way Forward Committee’ and it realised that such

a mammoth undertaking would need additional help

V.Wy. Bro Ian Currans Past G.D.C. was co-opted onto the committee to assist with ritual, V.Wy. Bro.

Simon Mighall as Minute Secretary and R.Wy.Bro.Brian Price to liaise with Prov. GSR’s. A task which he

has carried out with tremendous success.

R.Wy.Bro. Michael Guest joined the committee following his appointment as G.S.R. and R.Wy.Bro.

Barry Clarke has more recently joined as the co-ordinator of the various sub-committees responsible

for the forthcoming Inauguration Ceremony, an enormous task which as always Barry has discharged

with distinction

Following his appointment as President of the Executive Committee of the Scarlet Cord, Keith Waters

has also attended the Committee along with Frank Spencer, Grand Director of Ceremonies Designate.

Since its formation, the Way Forward committee has met nearly every month and has worked

tirelessly to ensure that the OSC will be ready to “fly alone” by this July. Many important decisions and

recommendations had to be made. These recommendations were as follows:

1. The Grand Senatus will be inaugurated on 21st July 2010

The Grand Temple at Great Queen Street has been booked for what will be a ‘once in a lifetime’

spectacle.

All members of the Scarlet Cord will be allowed to view the proceedings. Those Secret Monitors

who are not members will be offered the option of being introduced into the First Grade of the Order

on the morning of the Inauguration. A special Commemorative Jewel is to be struck which can be

worn by all companions who are members of the Order prior to the Inauguration. This will, of course,

include those brethren joining on the morning of Grand Senatus.

Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord 71

allegiances from one Scarlet Cord Conclave or Consistory to another, without having to pay an

additional first annual subscription or founder’s fee.

Many Provinces and Districts are geographically huge and a brother who joins a Scarlet Cord

Conclave miles away from his home, just to help establish the Order in the Province or District,

would obviously wish to transfer his allegiance if it was considered to open one on his doorstep.

Also Scarlet Cord Conclave No. 500 has nearly 700 members who through weight of numbers

would be unlikely to assume the chair. Such members may find it appropriate to resign from No.

500 and join a consistory local to them. Their local consistory would not need to pay their first

capitation fee to MMH as it would have been paid through No. 500.

11. Alteration to Ritual.

Because of some of the alterations mentioned in this paper the ritual for the first three Grades has

had to be amended slightly, especially the openings and who actually does which part of the ritual.

The new Ritual is effective from 21st July 2010.

12. Fourth Grade.

The Fourth Grade will only be worked by Scarlet Cord Consistory TI, at venues so designated by

Grand Senatus. To receive the Fourth Grade a Companion must be an Installed President.

13. Fifth and Sixth Grades.

These Grades will only be conferred on those companions who have been personally chosen by

the Grand Summus.

The current situation:

From the Germ of an idea promulgated just six years ago we now have some 64 Consistories with

a membership in excess of 2,500 members which pays ample testament to the attractions of this

wonderful Order.

In closing I would like to pay special recognition to all the members of ‘The Way Forward

Committee’ who have worked so hard to get us to where we are today. I would not really want

to mention any one member in particular because to do so would lessen the appreciation and

respect I hold for the others. They have all given a lot of their personal time and effort both at the

committee meetings and between them. Their telephone bills, like mine, must be astronomical.

I would also like to thank the Provincial and District Grand Supreme Rulers for their tremendous

enthusiasm, encouragement and support for this new Order. Without them the Order would never

have achieved the spectacular growth it now enjoys.

Companions, this is our Order. It started from nothing, and we are all part of its success.

Brian C. Wareham

Deputy Grand Summus

70 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

apparent that another companion has taken the lead in the furtherance of the Order of the Scarlet

Cord in that Province or District the Grand Summus may decide to choose that companion.

Each Provincial Grand Summus will rank in order of when his Province first acquired three Scarlet

Cord Conclaves. After the Inauguration they will rank, as in other Orders, in order of appointment.

8. Consistories.

Consistories will be responsible for conferring the first three grades of the Order.

Consistories will have the usual permanent officers i.e. Episcopus (Chaplain), Treasurer, Recorder,

Director of Ceremonies, Registrar etc.

The progressive officers will be President, Primus of Lectores, Primus of Ostiarii, four Lecturers, a

Herald and a Guarder.

The officers will be appointed by the President for the time being who, as with other Orders, will be

elected and installed in open consistory and generally hold office for one year.

Prior to his installation the President Elect should be a third Grade companion and prepared at a

special ceremony arranged at Provincial level. A Provincial Grand Summus may prepare more than

one President at a time.

In an Inspectorate it is envisaged that the Grand Inspector will prepare the President elect in his

own consistory, just before his installation. There he may be assisted by consistory officers or visiting

companions, present for that purpose.

A companion may be prepared before he is elected to office, i.e. when he is Primus of Lectores or

Primus of Ostiarii. So long as he has been prepared, and is in possession of a patent proving the fact, he

may be installed at a later date. It is the possession of the patent which affords the authority. A companion

becomes a Distinguished Companion when he receives the preparation ceremony and not when he is

installed. However he must be an Installed President before he can be received into the Fourth Grade.

9. Grand Officers.

The Grand Summus as head of the Order will assume the prefix of Most Distinguished Companion.

Other Grand Officers will have the title of Right Distinguished Companion, Very Distinguished

Companion or Distinguished Companion depending on their Rank. (Please refer to the table of

Grand Ranks) An installed President within a Consistory will also assume the title of Distinguished

Companion. All others will carry the prefix of Companion.

A Most Distinguished Companion will receive a salutation of 11 times (** **).

A Deputy or Assistant Grand Summus, Present or Past will receive a salutation of (9 times (** **).

All other Right Distinguished Companion will receive a salutation of 7 times (** **).

A Very Distinguished Companion will receive a salutation of 5 times (** **).

A Distinguished Companion will receive a salutation of 3 times (** **).

10. Free Transfers between consistories.

It has been agreed that for a short period of time, brethren and companions may transfer their

72 Inauguration of The Ancient and Masonic Order of the Scarlet Cord

The Work of the

Before detailing the structure and duties of the various sub-committees, it is important to know the

‘chain of command’.

The Chairman of the Way Forward Committee is Right Distinguished Companion Brian Wareham, Deputy

Grand Summus. Distinguished Companion Angus Hannagan, the President of the Executive Committee

for the Order of the Secret Monitor, was the central point of contact. All information to and from the Way

Forward Committee was channelled through Angus, thus enabling him to keep all Committee members

fully informed of all developments.

Right Distinguished Companion Barry Clarke undertook a similar role for the various sub- committees,

with the added caveat that all information emanating from the sub-committees would in turn be passed

to Angus Hannagan. This simple, but very important arrangement, ensured that at every stage the Way

Forward Committee controlled the pace and development of the Scarlet Cord. The work of Distinguished

Companion Angus has been instrumental in the ’birth’ of our wonderful Order.

Having established a date and broad profile for the Inauguration of the Scarlet Cord, the ‘Way Forward

Committee’ decided that due to the scope and complexity of the Inauguration, it would be advisable to

form a number of specialist sub-committees to deal with specific areas of the event. Barry Clarke was

charged with co-ordinating the work of the sub-committees and reporting back to the ‘Way Forward

Committee’. Keith Waters was appointed as Barry’s Deputy. The structure and duties of the sub-

committees is outlined as follows:

(i) RITUAL - This was the first sub-committee and was originally set up under the direction of Most

Worthy Brother, Peter Glyn WILLIAMS, Past Grand Supreme Ruler. The Ritual sub-committee consists

of Roy LEAVERS, Brian WAREHAM and Ian CURRANS. This committee have produced the Ritual for

all six Grades of the Order and have done a quite superb job.

(ii) REGALIA - This was the second sub-committee formed and consists of Roy LEAVERS, Peter

ROLLIN and Ian CURRANS. All elements of the newly designed Regalia have been originated and

designed by this sub-committee.

(iii) INAUGURATION RITUAL COMMITTEE – The final part of the trio of original sub-committees is the

Inauguration Ritual Committee. The sub-committee consists of Roy LEAVERS, Brian WAREHAM and Ian

CURRANS. This sub-committee have been responsible for conceiving and documenting all the various

elements of the Ritual which together comprise the Inauguration of the Order.

(iv) CEREMONIAL - The conception and implementation of the ceremonial of the Ancient and Masonic

Order of the Scarlet Cord has been the responsibility of the Grand Director Ceremonies of the Order of

the Secret Monitor Roy LEAVERS. He has been ably assisted by Brian WAREHAM and Ian CURRANS

(v) VENUE LIAISON – Chaired by Simon MIGHALL has been organising and dealing with all the booking

1986. Membership of Warwickshire Installed Commanders No.

1400 followed in 1998 becoming its Commander in 2004. Michael

February 1979, becoming its Supreme Ruler in 1987. In 1990
