The American West in the 1800s

Key Vocabulary:

expansion: the act of becoming bigger or of making something bigger.

Pioneers: people that discovered and settled on new land, also known as settlers.

frontier: the edge of a settled area.

housing: buildings for human habitation, especially one that is lived in by a family or small group of people.

clothing: items worn to cover the body.

travel: make a journey, typically of some length or abroad.

The Mississippi River was the border of the settled area. The frontier is west of the river.

People continued expanding west and made trails all the way to the coast of thePacific Ocean where Washington, Oregon and California are today.

Coaches and carriagesdrawn by horses, people on foot or horseback.

Late 1800s, the railroad was built.

Housing in America in the 1800s

Some homes were made with mud bricks.

Some homes were made with logs.
