BALL BRIEFS200 GAMES AT KE W

Bruce Smith joined Kew in 1970 andimmediately won a Most Consistent Playeraward for his first year. He followed this withthe Best and Fairest award in 1971 andcontinued to rank high amongst the awardsever since . He has been five times Best andFairest with numerous 2nd . Best and Fairest, and Best Team Man awards . He was a drivingfactor in the 1979 Grand Final that took Kewto B Grade . He has been Captain, Chairmanof the Social Committee and an active workerfor Kew for many years . He won Best Clubmanaward, for 3 consecutive years, whilst hismost recent prize was that of Debbie whomhe married earlier in the Season .

All at Kew acknowledge Bruce's continualsupport and dedication to the Club andsincerely hope that his new home, out in thesticks, won't prevent him from continuing hisassociation with Kew .

3 MORE AT COLLEGIANSCollegians normally reliable Press Corres-

pondent has fallen behind in his reports dueto a recent glut of milestones at the HARRYTROTT. As a consequence Jimmy Bullings'100th game for Collegians and ChrisWoodfulls' 50th, both played four weeks agoagainst Old Scotch, have so far goneunacknowledged .

Jimmy first played for Collegians in 1974.Limited somewhat by his size he has playedthe vast majority of his games as a rover, although in 1975 he almost stole the ReservesBest and Fairest while playing on the wing .Jimmy became a regular senior player in 1976on the wing . Jimmy became a regular seniorplayer in 1976 and indeed won the `MostImproved Senior Player' award of that year.He continued to play well in the firsts forseason 1977 but early in 1978 he broke hisjaw - not on the football field but afterimbibing to excess at a Caulfield GrammarOld Boys Football Club function andattempting to drive back to the Harry Trottthrough Albert Park Lake!!

Jimmy returned to football and the seniorsin mid 1979 but then a serious back injuryand a move to Queensland deprived the Lionsof his services until his return in June of thisyear. Since his return, Jimmy has played wellin the Thirds and was back in the Secondsfor his hundredth game .

Everybody at Collegians welcomes youback Jimmy and congratulates you on onehundred games well earned .

The other Collegiati to attain a milestoneagainst Old Scotch was Christopher "Drugs"Woodfu ll who played his 50th game for theLions . Chris joined Collegians in 1979 fromthe school where he collected his name"Drugs" as a result of his vacant, glazed eyes, slurred speech and slow motion style on thefootball field! He came to Collegians as aruckman but strangely has not played in thatposition to any great extent with the Lions .InhisfirstseasonChrisplayed almost exclusivelyin the seniors on the half-back-flank whilelast year he played in most key positions inthe Reserves when not on his regular half-back-flank with the firsts . This year Chris hasbeen obliged to play in the thirds because ofstudy obligations but has assured us he'll beback in full training in 1983 :

Well done Woody. Your height in the firstswill be invaluable next year and all Collegians'look forward to your return .

The Collegians 'Crown Lager Kid', WilliamScott played his 100th game for the Clubwhen he led the Reserves to a rather undis-tinguished loss against North Old Boys threeweeks ago .

`Crown' first played for the Lions in season1975 after playing football for the Wesleyfirsts alongside Tiddles Taylor and WaggersWagstaff. He played his first two seasons inthe Reserves with considerable success, somuch so that the then Reserves Captain -Coach Bruce Ferguson was moved to predicta fine future for Will in the seniors . Thefollowing year proved to be a disappointmentfor Will as his studies prevented him from

BALL BRIEFStraining . He played out the year in the SocialSide but in 1978 re-emerged to claim a regularposition on the half-back-flank in the Seniors .Under the coaching of Chris Roach, Willdeveloped into a courageous and rugged half-back-flanker with an enormously strong mark .He won the `Most Improved Player' award in1978 and continued to play regular seniorgames in 1979 .

Unfortunately `Crown' became dogged byleg injuries which added nothing to his paceand had to resign himself to seconds football .He spent season 1980 exclusively in theReserves as indeed he has done in seasons1981 and 1982 . In 1980 his unflinching attitudeto football won him the 'Most CourageousPlayer' award and stamped him as foremanmaterial. He was popularly promoted to thevice captaincy of last years' Premiershipwinning Reserves side and was chosen forcaptaincy this year .

Will has provided great service to Collegiansover the past 7 seasons and everybody at theHarry Trott hopes he'll be with us for manyseasons yet . Sadly Will's legs seem to begetting worse each game and it would be nosurprise if he decided to retire at the end ofthe season. All your team-mates hope youwill continue as captain next year Crown -after you lead us to another Reserves pennantthis year .

Thanks for all your effort Will and congra-tulations on staggering to your 100th game .

Peter Milford, Peter Lupson (now knownmore commonly as "Lumbering Luppo"thanks to the writer) and Rob Mellor have allrecently reached significant milestones andshall be rewarded with a "write-up" in thenext edition of this journal .

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKSCongratulations and thanks must go to

Anne Green from Peninsula Old Boys whoofficiated as time keeper in her 100th gamelast Saturday . Anne keeps the time in boththe 1st XVIII and 2nd XVIII games, whilstBob, her husband, is a tireless worker coachingthe 2nd XVIII and being chairman ofselectors for the club . The club owes thesetwo members, who have been with the clubsince its beginning, a great deal as withouttheir continued support we would struggle.

Once again congratulations Anne andthanks to both you and Bob for you r

tremendous help and support over the past 3years .

CENTURY AT NORTH BRUNSWICKJoe Pepi of the North Brunswick Club,

recentlyplayedhisl00thgameagainstUniversityReds. Joe joined the club in 1975 and, but fora run of injuries, would have played manymore games, but his courage and perse-verance have eventually landed him with his100. His coach describes him as a skilfulplayer who can kick with either foot. Joe wasa member of the 1979/80 premiership sides .The members and supporters of North wishto say "Well done Joe and may you playmany more games for the club .

N .O .B . NEWSNorth Old Boys very talented Danny

Galvan plays his 50th game today against OldXaverians . Danny began with the U'19's in1980 and quickly established his place in theseniors. A versatile player who has playedwith equal effect in both defence and attackhe has come back to top form at the rightend of the season .

Congratulations Danny from all at North .We look forward in the next few weeks for abig start to your next 50 games .

APPRECIATIONAll at University Blacks would like to thank

senior boundary umpire Tony `Snake' Gillfor another year of great service . In a jobthat is all too often taken for granted Snakedoes an excellent job . Thanks must also go toregular time keeper Andy Smith.

OLD BRIGHTON 50Congratulations to Old Brighton's Andrew

Cameron who played his 50th game last week. This achievement of Andrew's is especiallylaudable because the handicap of having twoknees that basically don't work, means thathe goes through agony every time he plays .Not that it makes any difference to the wayhe plays which, throughout his sadlyfootball career, has always been to attack theball at full pace and heaven help anyone whogets in his way (and there have been quite afew who haven't received that heavenly aid) .Andy's 50th game last week was typical ofthe 49 previous ones ; diving on the ball, charging through packs and knocking bodiesaside, the sort of game that inspires teammates, strikes fear into the opposition and isindispensible to any team . Very well done`Camo" .

BALL BRIEFSUNIVERSITY REDS

Congratulations are extended to Ros sCampbell on playing his 100th game with theUniversity Reds last Saturday against OldIvanhoe . Roscoe has played many fine gamesfor the Club and his marking and kickingability has been admired by his team matesand envied by his opponents. His hard work"off the field" is appreciated by all Reddersand hopefully there will be a lot more"bundies" and not so many "hammies" forthis popular Redder .

The Reds also congratulate Russell Heddleson recently playing his 50th game with theclub .

Russell's blistering pace, long kicking andconstant talking make him one of the topfootballers in "D" Grade and he is consistentlynamed as one of the best players .

Russell is also the Club's hard-workingSecretary and hopefully his second 50 will beas successful as his first .

FIRST 250 AT ST . BERNARD'SToday against Old Paradians Gerard

Mahoney becomes the first St. Bernard'splayer to reach the milestone of 250 games .Gerard's career commenced in 1969, whilsthe was still a schoolboy . He played fourseasons with, the U/19's for a record 63 games, captained the side in 1971-72 and leading theside to the junior one flag in 1972 . Sincegraduating to the senior sides "Porky" as heis known throughout the amateurs, has playedmany great games mainly in the centre, ruckroving or on the forward line . He is wellrenowned for his fierce desire to get the balland his strong tackling.

Gerard's distinguished record includes : 2Premierships - 1972 (U/19's), 1975 (AReserves), Best and Fairest - (Reserves)1975, 1979, 80, 81 . His last 146 games insuccession . Captain Coach of the Reserves.Committee man for 4 years, and perhaps hisgreatest achievement - the fact that he hasnot missed an official St . Bernard's socialfunction - or unofficial - in all his years atthe club.

Congratulations Gerard on your greatservice to the club and also of the Mahoneyfamily since the club was formed in 1963 . Aknee injury has slowed Gerard over the years, but the endeavour has remained, perhaps hisdedication to St. Bernard's will inspire youngplayers around the club to make a committ-

ment to help the club on its goal of a returnto A Grade.

Well done Gerard and congratulationsfrom all at St . Bernard's O .C .F .C .

Old Xaverians have tried this season tomake some contributions to the amateurfootballer with social notes and news.

The club would like to thank Jan Howardfor all the assistance and encouragementduring the year . All our copy was givenexcellent coverage .

150 FOR SHADOWAll those members at Thornbury sober

enough for the occasion should like to offertheir most heartfelt congratulations to Peter"Shadow" Wilson on the attainment of his150th game this Saturday . Nick-named "theShadow" because of his close checking (weall know it's because his shorts got 'knockedoff' in 1980 and he's been looking for themever since), Peter has been one of our moststalwart members spanning a period of 11seasons . Shadow suggests that I1 years inPentridge might have been more enlightening(and less dangerous) than the same period atThornbury but has found the experiencefruitful and, consequently, has remained andnow achieves top honours amongst his friendsand admirers at the faithful ThornburyFootball Club .

To Shadow - the very best for your 150th .PARADIAN PARS

REACHES 100Last week, Frank Avitablle played his 100th

game and the whole club congratulates himon this achievement, because, for a long time,it appeared that he might not make it ."Frankie Veg" (as he is affectionately known)commenced witht the Saints in 1971 andplayed about 5 seasons, mainly in the Reserves,as a very handy half-forward flanker . After abreak of a couple of years, Frank becameinvolved with the organisational side of theClub - an area in which he excelled . As avice-president, he continually broke newground with innovative ideas and was thedriving force behind the re-birth of our Under19 team . As a direct result of his efforts, theclub assumed joint responsibility for main-taining Under 17 and 15 teams in theW.D .J .F.A ., which has proved to be beneficialin two ways - it has cemented relations withthe College and has provided a trainingground for players of the future . Even thoughhe has coached our Under 17's for two yearsand is currently our Under 19 Coach, Frankhas managed to squeeze in the requirednumber of extra games to crack the ton . Ourhearty congratulations, Frank and thanks foryour deep involvement in our Club .

50 GAME SLaurie "Hard-Luck Dina" Sauer who cele-

brates his 50th game today, has been a greatworker around the club for many years . Hewould have achieved this feat far earlier hadit not been for troublesome knees . We triedto get some more information from "Hard-Luck" but he wouldn't talk to us because hehad too many hassles .

A fine mark and good running player wehave all enjoyed his great support over theyears and wish him well .

100 AT POWERHOUSECongratulations from all at Power House

to 'the man mountain', big Bert Bredyk onplaying his 100th game against Assumptiontoday . Bert played with the club's under 19'sin 1975 and played with the seniors in thelatter part of that season.

Everything seemed set for Bert to moveinto the seniors as a permanent first ruckmanin the 1976 season . However after only a fewgames, he suffered a serious knee injury, andhis future in football seemed finished . Every-one thought that was the end of Bert, that is,everyone except Bert. He fought back andplayed again the following season (1977) andalthough he still misses games occasionallythrough the need to rest his knee, he hasmanaged to reach his 100 games in fine style .This year in particular his standard of footballhas been superb and it is expected that heshould poll well in both the competition bestand fairest and the club best and fairest .

Once again Bert, good luck for today andwe hope to see many more games from youfor Power House .

50 GAMES UP AT STATE BANKCongratulations go to our No . 1 ruckman,

Geoff Maher on reaching his 50th game lastweek against North Brunswick .

Geoff's high leaping ability enables his towin most knockouts and take many greatmarks around the ground .

Geoff has also won our best and fairestaward in 1980 . All at Tigerland congratulateyou Geoff on reaching you 50th game andlook forward to your 100th .

Due to a misunderstanding, last week'sreport incorrectly stated that Jeff Inglis andSteve Roberts both played their 200th games .They both achieved 250 games, a great effort.Once again, congratulations Jeff & Steve .

ONE HUNDRED AND THREE FIFTIESAT ALPHINGTON

All at Alphington would like to congratulatePaul Coleman who today plays his 100thgame . Lou Hockins, Charlie McKay andTony Nicol who play their 50th gamesrespectively .

Paul started his career with the Juniors, quickly progressed to the seniors and was amember of the 1980 Premiership side . Aftermissing season 1981, he returned to the cluband is playing as well as ever on the half-back-flank where his very safe marking andstrong play has broken up many oppositionattacks .

Lou, Charlie and Tony have also beenmembers of our premiership teams but withdiffering roles . Charlie is a half-back flanker, and who at Alphington will forget his two

BALL BRIEFSsuperb performances over last year's finalswhen he repelled many attacking moves tobe voted best final series player .

Lou's performances speak for themselves,(although if you ask him and you have enoughspare time, he will humbly tell you) staterepresentative, best and fairest and leadinggoalkicker all achieved from the half forwardflank where his dazzling skills have left manyan opponent floundering .

Tony is one of the driving forces behindour recent success, on the field as a starcentre half forward and off the field as acommitteeman. Manyopportunitiesarecreatedeach week for his forward when he uses hisbody to perfection either to protect teammates or take strong marks.

Congratulations fellas, may you all go onto play many more fine games for the Tonnas .

150 GAMES TO DAVID BUC KAll at Heatherton congratulate David

"Frank" Buck on his 150th game today againstOld Ivanhoe. David played his first gamewith Heatherton in 1970. He won the 1972and 1980 Reserves Best and Fairest and wascaptain-coach of the reserves in 1980.

Bucky's numerous contributions haveincluded secretary, president, committee-man, junior coach and his live entertainmentat quiz nights .

David has always believed he has beenpossessed with great ability but has kept itunder close wraps for many years . On a truernote Bucky's guts and determination havebeen a great example to many of the youngerplayer's at Heatherton .

100 GAMES TO SIMON LINKSimon"Missing"LinkstartedwithHeatherton

in 1977 and as well as amassing the grandtotal of 100 games has easily equalled thatachievement in gained weight.

Missing's main attributes are his "guts" anddetermination and his marking strength andhis teamwork . A real worker around the clubhe is one of the most liked personalities atHeatherton . Recently nicknamed T . Slob' wewish him a great day and a great future .

HOME CLUBS TODA YAs today marks the completion of the first

round of matches for 1982, home clubs arerequested to be very prompt with the phoningof final scores . A further plea is made for

accuracy - please check with both goalumpires before phoning . Final placings inseveral sections could well be decided bypercentage and even a two point error in thephoned score could be vital .

Please co-operate - even if your club isnot directly involved in final four placings .
