DESCRIPTION
Section 2 of the December 12, 2012 edition of the AlmanacTRANSCRIPT
It’s the rainy and cold season, but that does not mean a shortage
of outdoor activities. There are still ways to get physical activity while enjoying the fresh air.
Bedwell Bayfront Park
Bedwell Bayfront Park, with its 2.3-mile trail of undulating
hills and scenic views, attracts people year-
round for hiking, run-ning, bicycling,
kite f ly ing, and photogra-
phy. But winter is an especially
good time for bird-watching as the season
brings species from colder climates up north that travel to the
Bay Area in search of food. Friends of Bedwell Bayfront Park, a group dedi-cated to preserving the open space of the park, hosts bird-watching activities on the second Saturday of each month.
“(Some people) haven’t ever looked at a duck to see how beautiful its plumage really is,” Chris MacIntosh, a founding member, said. The group was established in 1995 to counter the development of a golf course at the park. In addition to the bird viewing, the park collaborates with Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge to organize a walk that covers the history of the park and the restoration of the surrounding salt ponds, which is protected under the Refuge.
“The thing that we really want to do with our bird watching and the activities we put on there is to help people learn more what they are seeing in the park and learn how to value it,” MacIntosh said. Where: Bayfront Expressway and

While many look for-ward to the holidays for months, celebrat-
ing when their favorite radio station switches to Christmas themes before Thanksgiving, others hear those melodies and simply start to stress out.
The season’s warm atmosphere can belie the pressures of reunit-ing with extended family and friends, and meeting new addi-tions to these circles.
Fortunately, the Midpeninsula is brim-ming with professionals and services that aim to relieve stress year-round.
“My take on stress management is that people don’t put into practice what they know is healthy for them,” said Ernest Schmidt, a cognitive behavioral therapist.
“My general advice would be pretty generic, but effec-tive: making sure you’re not over-drinking, or staying up too late, or lacking in exercise. Most of us all know how to do these, but the question is of making these choices in the moment.”
Cognitive behavioral thera-py “started in the ’60s. There’s a lot of teaching, a lot of interacting and homework
assignments.”For a patient with social anxieties, home-
work can be as straightforward as walking up and down a busy street. Barbara Cohen is a licensed marriage
and family therapist who also specializes in breaking the negative thought patterns that amplify stress.

“We enter the holidays with great expectations,” Cohen wrote in a pam-phlet on coping with holiday stress. “For many these include the memories of holidays past or the fantasies of what could be.” Her biggest piece of advice pertains to keeping these expectations in check, giving from the heart without expectations of recip-rocation.
On the pragmatic side, she suggests “bringing a neutral friend or mate to family events (this helps neutralize potential explosive family stuff).”
Allison Shotwell, another licensed marriage and family therapist, shares advice that also involves some foresight.
“Consider what the most important traditions or parts of the holiday are most meaning-ful for you and put those as a priority, and think about letting go of any other parts that are causing you unnecessary stress,” she wrote.
Also important is to put enjoy-ment on one’s schedule, in addition to commitments and duties. This means “scheduling time into your days or weeks to do activities you love, schedul-ing time to exercise or meditate, giving yourself space to veg out or to grieve, getting a massage, or going into nature.”
A more passive, physical meth-od for relieving stress is massage therapy.
At Athletic Edge in downtown Palo Alto, most of sports thera-pist Christiana Aronstam’s cli-ents are athletes, many of whom come in with specific injuries to treat.
Others are “college kids under stress, or your average office worker who spends 10 hours a day behind a computer,” Aron-stam said.
On the many benefits of mas-sage therapy, she said that “for one, it lowers your cortisol levels, which are your stress hormones. It increases circula-tion. And it boosts your white blood cell count, which helps your immune system.”
“It is actually effective as a healing tool, as opposed to just
being for relaxation and pampering,”
said Kelly Dent, a massage manager at Watercourse
Way on Channing Avenue. She adds
that massage therapy can even reduce high blood pressure and inflammation.
Those who decide to treat themselves to a massage should make sure it’s not coming from an overworked masseuse. “You don’t want to be there at the end of the day when someone is
already exhausted,” Dent said.
Yoga is another popu-lar way of letting go of stress. Steve Farmer,
who owns Avalon Art & Yoga Center on Califor-
nia Avenue, explains the three components of the discipline: “Yoga through postures, yoga through breathing, and yoga through meditation. The three main aspects of yoga, all directly or indirectly affect your stress levels.”
Though the popular image of yoga often involves the pos-tures alone, these are means for deeper breathing rather than end goals.
Amy Cuddy, a professor at Har-vard Business School, recently spoke to the power of adopting open, expanded postures even
outside of a yoga studio. At a TED talk held in Edin-burgh, she said that shaping our bodies in an assured manner can
lead to genuine confi-dence: Cortisol levels drop
as testosterone levels increase.“Doing controlled breathing
exercises is one of the well-known, well-tested, medically confirmed methods of reducing
stress throughout the body,” Farmer said. A

24 The Almanac TheAlmanacOnline.com December 12, 2012
As a 4-year old, Yoshie Hill couldn’t understand why her mother suddenly threw away her favorite toys or started to yell back at the radio.
When Yoshie saw her mother being taken away, no one explained to her what had happened. Even if they had tried, how could a 4 year-old understand schizophrenia? In her young mind, Yoshie reasoned that it had to be something that she did or didn’t do that caused her mother to go away.
Yoshie and her sister were taken in by her paternal grandparents during her mother’s two-year hospital stay. After she was released, Yoshie’s mother returned home. Yoshie’s memories as a child were of a mother who was heavily drugged on Thorazine and who ex-perienced periodic psychotic episodes. Throughout her childhood, Yoshie was reminded by her father not to speak about her mother outside of their home. And she didn’t. In fact, Yoshie would some-times go for a week at a time, not uttering a word to anyone. There was no counseling or support offered to her or her sister to work through the ramifications of their family’s terrible secret.
As an adult, Yoshie experienced frequent bouts of depression. Four years ago, she lost her job at a community college, and sub-sequently, her apartment. She moved back into her mother’s home, but without the ability to pay rent, Yoshie’s sister, who was manag-ing her mother’s affairs, threatened eviction. Spiraling into a deep depression and unable to think of any other alternative, Yoshie recalls carefully planning how she was going to commit suicide. “In a brief moment of clarity,” she picked up the phone to call 911.
After a two-week stay in a psychiatric ward, Yoshie was placed at Redwood House, Caminar’s crisis residential treatment center. Despite being heavily medicated and not comprehending how she got there, she clearly recalls that from the outset, she felt com-pletely welcomed by the Redwood House staff and residents. On her first day, a resident told her that a group of them were going to get haircuts and invited her to come along. The next day, there was a holiday party.
Every day, there was something going on, so there was no time to dwell or brood. As she got to know her peers and learned of their experiences, she realized that she was not alone. They shared and learned from each other in group exercises, went on outings, and worked with their case managers on setting goals and planning next steps. When she started to feel down, Yoshie found that Caminar staff members were always there, day or night, to support her.
One afternoon, a group of Redwood House residents attended a College of San Mateo open house for the supported education program. There, she met Jerry, a friendly counselor with a warm twinkle in his eye. It wasn’t until the two met again a year later that she learned that he was a peer counselor who had gone through Caminar’s programs himself. After discovering all that they had in common and sharing a mutual attraction, they began dating. Two years later, they are now happily married.
When Yoshie began looking for work, she was offered a temporary clerical position in an insurance agency. The owner, Jerry’s uncle, was so impressed with Yoshie’s work that he offered her a full time job as receptionist and later, training to become an agent herself. Yoshie jumped at the opportunity, went through rigorous training and test-ing, and earned a license to become a certified insurance agent. She loves her work, especially when dealing with clients who are going through difficulties, because her life experiences have taught her true empathy.
Caminar appreciates Yoshie’s willingness to share her story and also for employers like Yoshie’s who give individuals who have a men-tal illness a real chance to prove to themselves and to the world what they are capable of accomplishing. As Yoshie shows, recovery is real, and it is happening every day at Caminar.

Twenty four cities in San Mateo and Santa Clara
County, including Menlo Park, are considering
adopting San Mateo County’s Reusuable Bag
Ordinance. The ordinance would prohibit disposable
plastic carry-out bags at all retail establishments and
mandate a minimum charge of ten cents for every
recycled paper bag or resusable bag provided by the
retailer at checkout. Retailers would retain 100% of
the revenue from selling carry-out bags a check-out,
and customers could avoid the additional charges by
bringing their own reusuable bags when shopping.
The ordinance will be presented to Menlo Park City
Council in January 2013 for their vote. If adopted by
Menlo Park City Council, the ordinance will likely
take effect on April 22, 2013 — Earth Day.

Besides open skating, Sunday evenings is designated family session and Wednesday evenings are reserved for adults. The vigi-lant and helpful ice guards will smother skaters with caution and when that fails, people can cozy by the fireplace and soothe themselves over 50-cent hot cocoa. Guests can try looking into lessons offered for children and adults. Once the skating shoes have been worn into, turn up the “cold” on the ice rink with a private ice party or broomball competition.

Save The BayIt doesn’t take nice weather
and clear skies to help the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. Since 1961, Save the Bay has grown to be the “largest regional organization working to pro-tect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay,” according to its website. The organization and its 40,000 supporters, volunteers and advocates work year-round to re-establish 100,000 acres of wetlands.
On Dec 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will plant native plants. This will be the last day for volunteers to get their hands dirty in 2012 and help Save the Bay reach its goal of planting 30,000 plants this season.
Volunteers can celebrate National Bird Day on Jan. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, by plant-ing native plants to restore their habitat. Volunteers will have the opportunity to view some of these birds like great egrets, canvasbacks, godwits, willets, black-necked stilts and long billed curlews. Attendees can also enjoy Mother Nature while avoiding her elements in Save the Bay’s Palo Alto nursery on Jan. 9. Save the Bay will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 9 by planting native species in Menlo Park’s Ravenswood Pond and Palo Alto’s Baylands. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers can do good in the world by restoring local wetlands.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are consid-ering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automati-cally entitle you to free and clear owner-ship of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the high-est bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or

Proposition 65 Warning L-3 Communications Randtron Antenna Systems operates facilities located at and around 130 Constitution Dr., Menlo Park which uses and emits chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. We do not believe that any person is exposed to these chemicals at levels constituting a health or safety risk. However, we have not made a formal determination that actual exposure levels are below the Proposition 65 âùœno significant riskâùù levels for carcinogens or âùœno observable effectâùù levels for chemicals known to cause reproductive harm, and we have not performed a risk analysis to determine the precise amount of exposure that any individual would receive over a 70 year period. Proposition 65 therefore obligates us to provide this warning to potentially effected individuals.
