By Kate Daly Special to The Almanac W oodside Communi- ty Theatre is trying something new when it presents the Bay Area premier of the Tony award-winning musical, “The Drowsy Chap- erone,” on Oct. 29, 30 and 31 and Nov. 5, 6 and 7 at Woodside High School Performing Arts Center. The show has a smaller cast than usual — 25 performers — with no children under 17 and no large chorus. It’s also a departure from the classic musicals WCT has put on for years. Director Dan Demers calls “The Drowsy Chaperone” “the antithesis of Fiddler,” referring to last year’s production, “Fid- dler on the Roof.” “We wanted something that was new, current and fresh, something that would take the audience away from what’s going on, so it can relax, have fun and enjoy the theater,” Mr. Demers said. This is his first time directing this group. In the past he has directed at Hillbarn Theatre and Serra School. A show within a show, “The Drowsy Chaperone” ran on Broadway, and earned five Tony Awards in 2006, including Best Book and Best Music. Bob Mar- tin and Don McKellar wrote the book; Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison composed the music and lyrics. Set in the 1920s, the comedy starts with a man listening to show tunes in his living room when suddenly a full-blown musical springs to life centered around a Broadway starlet seek- ing love. Elizabeth Santana of San Jose plays that part, reined in at times by The Drowsy Chap- erone, or Darlene Batchelder of Woodside. She describes her role as a “diva — she’s big and bold and does everything she wants to do.” This season is Ms. Batchelder’s fifth season with WCT. Her hus- band, Darrel, is in the ensemble after appearing in several WCT shows, as well. She launched her acting career when she was a student at Woodside High a few decades ago, and played Yenta in WCT’s production last year. Ms. Batchelder sees this year’s show as an entirely differ- ent experience. “It’s really an ensemble cast of people who’ve had leads in shows,” she says. Ron Lopez, for example, who plays The Man in the Chair or narrator of this musical, had a big part in WCT’s “Guys N Dolls,” and so did Damian Marhefka who is appearing as Aldolpho. Cheryl Ringman plays another lead, Kitty, in her seventh WCT show. Mrs. Tottendale is portrayed by Brenda Harris who started her acting career at age 7 as Imogene Coca’s daughter on TV. Co-producer Claudia McCar- ley describes the music as “very upbeat; it takes off from the Golden Age of musicals and is a parody on all of those.” Ms. McCarley has appeared in many WCT productions since the group was revived in 2003, but this time around she’s taking a break from the stage to produce, and watch her daughter, Jacquie, perform in the ensemble. Co-producer Donna Losey is back producing and supporting her actress daughter, Brigitte. This is Brigitte’s eighth WCT show. The same holds true for fellow Woodside High senior LeeAnn Patrick. They’re both in the ensemble. Some, such as the newly restored Folger Barn, have an air of grandiosity. Others are contempo- rary and more private, owned by Silicon Valley professionals. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include a polo demonstration and performance by a 12-horse drill team, as well as a sale of equestrian paintings, bronze statues, and other art. She began collecting art in her early 20s. The gallery will exhibit a variety of media, ranging from paintings to photography, pri- marily by established European artists, although works of San Francisco and Los Angeles art- ists will be sold as well, she said. Jonelle Grace Madsen of Atherton, recently celebrated 70th wedding anniversary Jonelle Grace Madsen, who resided in Atherton for the past 36 years, died Oct. 8, just a few weeks after she and her husband Thor Madsen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. She was born in Seattle, Wash-ington, in 1923 and moved to Los Angeles shortly thereafter. At the age of 14, while in high school, she met Thor, the “love of her life,” say family members. Two years later, they married. She lived in San Carlos for 30 years before moving to Atherton. She was a member of Little House Activity Center (she always looked forward to Monday mov-ies), the Atherlons, and an invest-ment group. Throughout her life, say fam-

ily members, she kept her mind sharp, c omple t i ng the newspaper crossword puz-zle each day, and following the stock mar-ket. She was an avid bridge player, playing in many bridge groups. She enjoyed the challenge of bridge, but most of all loved the friendships she developed with the players. She took a lively interest in women’s and men’s sports; trav-eled the world with her hus-

band, family and friends; and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was famous for her homemade pies and apricot jam, say family members. In addition, she was an expert knitter and seamstress, they said. She is survived by her husband Thor; brother Roy Heavenston; children Barbara Woodward, John Madsen and Carolyn Caine; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There will be no service, according to her request. The family asks that memorial donations be sent to: Sequoia Hospital, Foundation Nursing Scholarship Fund, 170 Alame-da de las Pulgas, Redwood City, CA 94062.

Jan Brett will visit Kepler’s aboard her tour bus wrapped in artwork from her latest book, “The Three Little Dassies.”

Children’s author and illustrator Jan Brett, who has more than 35 million books in print, will be at Kepler’s Books, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park, from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. She will arrive in a tour bus decorated with illustrations from her latest book, “The 3 Little Das-sies” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, $17.00), the classic story of the “Three Little Pigs” with an African twist. The story is set in Namibia, Africa, where the little guinea-pig-like animals, known as Rock Dassies, hope to find a place to build their new homes. Bold Africa patterns

and prints fill the pages and the dassies are dressed in colorful dresses and hats. The author, who sells a mil-lion books a year, says she wants kids and their parents to delve into places they might want to go someday. She has researched many countries for her books including Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Botswana, Cos-ta Rica and China. A ticket, acquired by purchas-ing a copy of “The Three Littel Dassies,” is required to attend Ms. Brett’s talk. For more information, call Kepler’s at 324-4321.

West Bay Opera in Palo Alto is 55 years old and it has waited all

this time to present “La Forza del Destino,” the massively complex and convoluted tale of love, hon-or and spiritual redemption. It was worth waiting for. Within its nearly four hours is some of the most beauti-ful dramatic opera music ever written. In many ways, it was a remarkable achievement for the regional company. The audience at the opening weekend performance on Oct. 15 at Lucie Stern Theatre was enthusiastic in its approval. The two concluding shows are Saturday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. Tick-ets are still available. The title’s translation could be “the power of destiny.” And it may be that West Bay was com-pelled by fate to tackle such an awesome assignment. WBO has the array of outstanding singers, and a dedicated creative team of artistic specialists in operatic music, staging, set design and all the myriad other tasks involved in this most complex perfor-mance medium. And Midpeninsula audiences are highly supportive of reach-ing beyond the old familiar offerings. This season, West Bay’s entire schedule is made up of works few regional opera theaters ever take on. “Forza” takes us back to the

1740s in Spain and Italy. The proud Marquis of Calatrava is shocked to discover his daugh-ter, Leonora, is about to elope with Alvaro, a Peruvian half-caste (although he is an Inca prince). When Alvaro’s pistol is tossed away, it accidentally kills the father. This sets in motion a commitment on the part of Carlo, Leonora’s brother, to kill both of the lovers, who sepa-rately reach a monastery where Carlo forces a duel and is him-self killed, but not before he has mortally stabbed his sister. Offstage, fortunately. Leono-ra’s anguished death brings her wish for her lover’s redemption. Outstanding voices and strong dramatic acting marked all of the principals. Leonora is sung by the young Russian soprano, Olga Chernisheva, whose versa-tility was heard in the title role of Manon Lescaut last season at West Bay. Her vibrant aria renditions, such as “pace, pace mio Dio,” evoked memories of Leontyne Price and Maria Cal-las in earlier days in this role. Her Inca prince, Don Alvaro, is sung by tenor Percy Marti-nez, who is actually a native of Peru. Carlo is Gabriel Manro, a powerful baritone making his first company appearance, who

seemed to thrive on the evil deeds to which fate was driving him. Several other key singing roles were critical to the total impact, especially in bringing forth the many changes of mood, a hall-mark of the late Verdi operas. The outstanding acting talents coupled with strong vocal presentations came from mezzo soprano Michele Detwiler as the feisty gypsy army camp follower, Preziosilla; bass-baritone Peter Graham was pivotal in the calming, authoritative role of Padre Guardiano; and a contrast-ing clerical role of the bumbling Friar Melitone, was well-sung by Carl King in his WBO debut. The adult and boys chorus takes on special duties in “Forza,” more so than most Verdi operas. Led by the booming bass of Carlos Aguilar, the chorus was almost as critical as the principals in moving the story forward. Credit much of the success to the theatrical wisdom and experience of director David Ostwald, a Por-tola Valley resident when he isn’t

in New York. The director amaz-ingly was able to move huge forces seamlessly around the small stage. One scene even used all of the aisle-space at Lucie Stern for a candlelight march by the monks. Conductor of the opera Michel Singher not only did the reduction of the score from a huge symphonic orchestra to a 30-piece ensemble, he also guided the talented set of musi-cians in the small pit, but over video monitors in several spaces he could not see. His superb command brought out the fullness of the score despite the orchestra’s spatial limi-tations. The theater’s intimate size allowed excellent balances between the voices and the instruments. Gifted veteran WBO set designer Jean-Francois Revon created a giant tapestry that depicts scenes from the opera much in the style of what might be hanging in a Spanish grandee’s castle. Each area was illu-minated like a story-board by light-ing designer Robert Ted Anderson. British costume designer Claire Townsend made her debut dressing the company in appropriate 18th century color tones and style. A
