Subject: School-Based Threat Assessment and Safety Management MAKE-UP SESSION on Tuesday, May 4, 2010

To: All Principals, Vice Principals, Deans, and Campus Supervisors

Date: April 15, 2010

No. 100618

Prepared By: Randall Ranes, Director, Instructional Support Services Division

Approved By: Michael D. Lingo, Superintendent Page 1 of 1

This is a MANDATORY training in compliance with the Local Education Agency Plan Addendum of the District.

Threat assessment is a process of: (1) evaluating a threat and the circumstances around the threat; (2) uncovering facts to indicate whether the threat is likely to be carried out; and (3) planning what should be done about the threat. This professional development opportunity draws from the published literature, board policy, and safety planning with a specific focus on preventing planned acts of student violence. Although a review of findings from school shootings will be briefly discussed, this is a skill-based presentation providing practice on key threat assessment and safety management components including:

• Reviewing examples of conduct and determining if there has been a threat (defined as an expression of intent to harm someone).

• Classifying a threat as transient, serious substantive, or very serious substantive. • Responding to threats by identifying and aligning safety management steps with the

threat classification and circumstances around the threat.

Date: Tuesday, May 4, 2010 Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Place: Professional Development Center Audience: Principals, Vice Principals, Deans, and Campus Supervisors1

1 Only one representative from the identified audience must attend to meet the mandatory training requirement.
