Page 2: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

One day there was a boy named Bob who was doing his Science homework. He was so confused because he didn’t know what cohesion or adhesion was. So Bob just sat there and moped just waiting for the answers to pop on his paper. Then suddenly this weird light appeared at the end of his bed he saw something that he has never seen before.

Page 3: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

It appeared to be a strange woman floating at the end of his bed. It turned out to be the water goddess. Bob was about to go in a panic attack. He started screaming ,“Mommy, Mommy there is a strange woman in my room help me. The water goddess snapped her fingers and the boys mouth had zipped up. The water goddess had said, “Be quiet I am here to help you.” Bob said in a strange and scared voice, “What do you want from me?” The water goddess sighed and said, “I am here to help you with your science homework.” Bob was so confused, that he didn’t know what to say or think.

The Water Goddess said, “ I am going to take you on an adventure that you’ve never been on before”. “What type of adventure are you going to take me on?” Bob asked. The Water Goddess said “It’s a surprise, and a secret, so you can’t tell anyone about this. Or else I will make you vanish from existence.” Bob looked horrified of what she said to him.

The Water Goddess suddenly grabs his arm and takes Bob on the adventure of his life. On the way to their adventure they listened to some music. In a flash they were at their destination. Bob was amazed at what he was seeing. The Water Goddess says “The adventure I am taking you on, is an Adhesion and Cohesion adventure!” Bob didn’t like what she had told him, all he wanted to do now was go back home. The Water Goddess would not let him leave. So she grabbed his arm and yanked him back. They flew away, he knew now that he couldn’t escape now at the same time showing him the water properties.

The Water Goddess shows Bob an object that had some positive and negative energy in it. Bob had no clue what in the world the Water Goddess said. She finally explained what it means. The water goddess said ok if an object has some positive and negative energy in it, it’s Polarity. The water goddess said, Polarity is the property of a molecule that has sides that have opposite charges and are not balanced. For example water is polar because the oxygen side has a negative charge and the hydrogen side has a positive charge. Bob said, Oh I get it now.

Bob and the Water Goddess continued to fly on there adventure. They come across this weird thing on the ground that water is producing. Bob asked “what’s that”? The Water Goddess said in an excitement voice, “Well this is called Hydrogen Bonding”. Bob looked confused and said, “what is hydrogen bonding”? The water goddess explains it to him in a very serious voice, ‘Well hydrogen bonding are formed because of water, like what I said a while ago water is polar. These bonds con form easily and are weak and very little energy is needed to break hydrogen bonds”. Bob is thinking about what the Water Goddess said and he said, “Everything you explain to me it gets easier and easier for me to understand the concepts”. Water Goddess says, “I am proud of you”.

Bob finally says to the water goddess, “I feel like I want to walk”. Water goddess giggles and says, Alright we can walk”. While they are walking bob sees water sticking to water. Why is water sticking to the plant water goddess” Bob said. “Well this is called cohesion” the Water Goddess says. “Explain to me what cohesion is please” said Bob. “Well water sticking to any object is cohesion, water is very attracted to itself and will come together whenever possible for example (raindrops)”. “Wow it makes me wonder how water does that but that is so cool” Bob said in amazement. “Lets keep on going” Bob said with excitement.

Page 9: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

Before Bob even took one step he saw water sticking to another substance. He asked the water goddess, “ What is happening to the tree is that bad?” No No dear this is called adhesion” said the water goddess. “Oh what is adhesion” Bob asked in a curious way. The Water Goddess told him, “Adhesion is where water is sticking to other objects, For example water sticking to a window.” “So that’s what adhesion is” bob said.

Bob and the water goddess were walking around and they saw some stuff like surface tension. Surface Tension is the property of liquids. These liquids behave as if they were covered by a thin elastic layer. For example bug walking on water.

Page 11: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

Bob came across water coming out of a rock. Well that is called Capillary Action. Capillary action is the tendency of a liquid to rise in narrow tubes or to be drawn into small openings such as those between grains of a rock. “Wow the meaning of capillary Action is easy” Bob said.

As they kept walking the Water Goddess pointed out something very cool. She pointed out water dissolving salt. Bob said, “That’s Lame”. The Water Goddess said, “It is actually very interesting to look at water dissolving little tiny particles.” “Really what is this called” Bob said with curiosity. “This is Universal Solvent” said the Water Goddess. Universal Solvent is when water is dissolving more than one substance. Remember water can’t dissolve everything it can only dissolve more than one substance.

Bob and the Water Goddess been walking for a long time and they came across this ice cube floating on top of a pond. Bob was so disgusted because the pond smelled and looked really disgusting. The Water Goddess said, “This is what we call density”. Density is where an object floats or sinks on top of water. If the objects density is less than one then the object will float. If the object is greater than one then the object will sink. That is what density means.

Page 14: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

The Water Goddess was telling Bob what Specific heat was. Specific Heat is the amount of energy that is needed to heat up only 1 gram of an object by at least 1 degree celsius.

Page 15: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

Bob didn’t really know what the water cycle was so he asked the water goddess what is the water cycle. The water cycle is how precipitation forms. It starts off as evaporation and then it forms clouds so after that then it starts to rain.

Page 16: The Adventure of Adhesion and Cohesion

Water is unique in so many ways. Water makes up 75% of earth and 25% of it is land. There are different types of water there is salt water, fresh water, boiling water, and cold water. Water can be frozen ice. The icebergs on the ocean is part of water. That is because the ice is frozen. Water is made of hydrogen bond.

This project was fun thanks to Mr. D’Agostin for being such a great science teacher.
