A question asked a lot around the Ranch is “Who is that employee?”
As owners of a corporation, it is a good thing to get to know who super-
vises and works for your corporation from day-to-day. A new section
in the 9Lines this week will help the owners do that; learn a little about
our employees, what the Ranch means to them and how it has changed
their lives. We are doing this by interviewing an employee each week.
This article is about a lady who has seen many changes in both her life
and the Ranch since she was hired. From March 2005 through today,
Carmen Mitchell has worked under 5 Ranch (and interim) Managers
and has had far more jobs and duties than that.
WHO IS CARMEN MITCHELL? Carmen Mitchell is currently Housekeeping Supervisor in charge of 5
employees who clean all buildings, stage stops and our rental fleet,
among several other duties. But, this article is not about what Carmen
does, it’s about who she is. Carmen said several times in her interview
she owes her life to Mel Hands, a former Ranch Manager, who in
March of 2005 gave her the chance to better herself when no one else
would. She was a high school drop-out; her life was in a downward
spiral. When Carmen was asked why she didn’t finish high school, her
response was immediate, “Because I was a hell-raiser and just didn’t
give a damn about anything.” Circumstances that her choices in life
created made her realize the path she was on could only lead to heart-
ache for the grandparents who raised her. At 21, she had no direction,
never worked a steady job; a single mother that knew she had to change
her ways. Unemployed with no skills or references, she applied for
jobs from Ava to West Plains in all directions. She got one callback:
Cloud 9 Ranch Manager, Mel Hands offered her a job at the gatehouse.
After being hired, she broke her leg (getting Grandma’s cat out of a
tree), became Office Receptionist until the leg healed, then back to the
gatehouse she went. Having a real job changed her in many ways. Car-
men’s attitude became, “Cloud 9 gave me a new life and I wanted to
give back. I did anything Mel Hands asked me to do for the Ranch that
needed doing.” She worked at the Pavilion, cleaned pools, compound
inventory, grass crew to name a few. Carmen remembers one date
well. On July 5, 2007, she got a real promotion: Maid 1
(Housekeeping Supervisor radio call name).
Carmen’s personal life changed, as well. She fell in love with a young
man who she admits was not living right either. She soon let Ben
Mitchell know if he was going to be in her life, he had to follow the
right path right along beside her. Ben and Carmen married in Novem-
ber of 2007. Around July 2008, Ben got a job offer in another state.
Carmen gave up her C9R supervisor job and followed Ben to Nebraska.
The job lasted less than a year and the Mitchell family landed back
home in Southern Missouri. By April 2009, Carmen was back at C9R
on the grass crew, and was glad to have that. Soon, the Maid 1 position
opened up; Carmen asked for it again and got it.
While employed at C9R, Carmen obtained her GED and Ben became
an employee in maintenance. The couple will celebrate their 4th wed-
ding anniversary on November 17, 2012. They have three daughters,
ages 9, 4 and 6 mos. The Mitchells are owner/employees and enjoy the
amenities when time allows. However, Carmen revealed it is some-
times hard for employees to “enjoy” the Ranch because it always seems
to be some chaos that needs attention. Both she and Ben are dedicated
to Cloud 9 and put their jobs before their membership.
Surprisingly, one of Carmen’s favorite things to do off the clock is vol-
unteering at the Ranch for “anything she is asked to do.” That list is
long, but the one she remembers the most was helping her Grandma
baking 25 cakes on holiday weekends twice for cake walks sponsored
by the FunAddicts (former committee). When asked about her ex-
tended family, Carmen paused, then wiping away a tear shared several
things that has happened this past year with tragedies and terminal ill-
ness. Story Continued Page 5

At last report, a wild fire, which began as a lightening strike, has
burned nearly 500 acres of the Mark Twain National Forest in
Ozark County. National Forrest Fire Manager, Jody Eberly, says
the fire is being called the “Potato Cave Fire”. The fire is located
about 9 miles from the town of Dora Missouri. The National
Forrest Service is working on the containment of the fire and ex-
pect that the fire will be contained by the end of the week.
Area Residents, including Cloud 9 Ranch Club, should expect to
seeing and smell the smoke in the air for several more days.
In the spring of 2012, the Ranch Resource Department took pre-
cautionary measures for such an instance happening on the Ranch
property. The unseasonably dry spring lead Ranch Management
and the Resource Development Department to believe that 2012
would be a year that would produce a high risk of late summer
wildfires. With this in mind, the wooded areas around the camp-
grounds and compounds of Cloud 9 Ranch were cleaned of dead
debris that would fuel a wildfire. This clean-up project has
helped to make our campgrounds much safer. With no real break
in the hot temperatures, and no significant rain fall in sight, please
use extreme caution as you camp at Cloud 9 Ranch. Building
campfires in unapproved areas is strictly prohibited and never
leave your campfire unattended. Please properly extinguish and
discard smoking materials. Your cooperation and support as
members makes Cloud 9 Ranch a safer place for everyone.

Well Cloud 9 Members!
I survived my first actual discussion Board meeting along with
an Executive meeting in closed session on July 21st. I can tell you
it sure is different setting on that side of the table then out in the
audience. I survived, so no harm no foul. I was glad to see that
even if we have different opinions on certain things we still can
work as a unit for the betterment of yours, mine and all Ranch
members alike. I have given some ideas to the other board mem-
bers that will need more thinking, (tweaking or as I made the
mistake by calling it tweeting). Even got to eat some good fish at
the fish fry in Foggy. I hope to see y'all out and about at the
Ranch sometime, when dusty I try to stay close to the river in a
chair, other than that I am everywhere as a passenger, I'm lucky
enough to have my wife drive me around so I get to sight see. I
also want to thank all members that voted and encourage more
members to vote next year.

On a lighter note that brought back her smile was talking about Great
Aunt Lee, an accomplished artist who owned an art store and donated
the Art Gallery Building to the Town of Ava. One of Aunt Lee’s works
received national recognition at the White House, a painting of Osama
Bin-Laden withTwin Towers in the background. Carmen has been told
an original print hangs in the State Capitol at Jefferson City, MO, and
wants to take her children to see it soon.
Carmen Mitchell’s goals for her family are that of a changed young
lady from the “hell-raiser” she claimed to be before Cloud 9 Ranch
found her. Her dream is to pay off the mortgage on their home in Dora
as soon as possible. For her girls, she wants a better childhood than
she or Ben had. Her faith is strong and renewed through volunteer
work as Youth Director at Dora’s Need More Church of God.
Carmen was asked if she had anything to say to C9R owners. Her re-
sponse is worth repeating: “I would like to ask every member to think
about what they say to employees before they say it. Everyone has
good and bad days, and the employees are no different. Respect em-
ployees as real people, human beings with feelings.” The worst thing
that Carmen hears a member say is, “I pay your salary.” Carmen was
candid when she said, “It really sucks to hear those words.”
Carmen’s work history at C9R gives her insight far beyond many of us.
The last question asked of Carmen was what Cloud 9 Ranch means to
her today. Her answer was not a quick one. She looked away and
thought for a moment, then said, “I love seeing the people, love this
Ranch; even as nasty as my job is sometimes, I still love it. Some ap-
preciate us – some don’t -- the few members that are nice and appreci-
ate what we do make it all worthwhile.”

What You Carry In!
Please Ride Responsibly!
It is Your responsibility to know!
Cloud 9 Ranch is a very beautiful place to ride ATV’s, camp, and
fish. With nearly 6500 acres, there is something for everyone to
do at Cloud 9 Ranch. Ranch members are encouraged to ride the
trails & explore the natural beauty that our Ranch encompasses.
With that task also comes the responsibility of the member to
know where you are on the property. The RRC has spent a great
amount if time & effort in producing C9RTrail maps. The maps
are a tool that every member should have readily available as they
explore the Ranch property. For your convenience the maps are
for sale in the Trading Post. As you enjoy your time at Cloud 9
Ranch, be aware that private landowners share fence lines with
the Ranch. Both Ranch Management and these Private Owners
want you, as members, to be aware that cutting fences and the
destruction of private property is against the law. Ranch Mem-
bers who trespass onto privately owned land can be prosecuted.
Surrounding property owners have reported to Ranch Officials
that fire rings have been built, trash (beer cans) have been left and
fences have been cut by Cloud 9 Members. One landowner has
also reported that since the spring of this year, nearly 2 miles of
ATV trails have been blazed on their privately held property. As
members, know where you are on the Ranch property, look for
purple marking paint to identify property lines and avoid all areas
that are marked with “NO TRESSPASSING” signs. The Ranch
has been blessed with neighbors that respect our private area, let’s
return the favor by respecting the rights of the surrounding prop-
erty owners as well.

Foggy Cave Exploration Day
Members of Cloud 9 Ranch often ask about the caves at the Ranch. At
last count, there are 29 caves on the Cloud 9 Ranch property. Often
members are intrigued by the caves but few actually take the time to
seek the caves and explore them. For those of you who would like to
explore the Ranch caves but have reservations about caving crawling
for whatever reason, here is your opportunity to join the “Foggy Cave
Exploration Day”.
Foggy Cave, one of eight major caves located at Cloud 9 Ranch, is one
of the most beautiful caves on the property. Foggy is an extremely
large cave with multiple rooms. Being a “wet” cave, the stream that
flows through the cave has helped to create beautiful formations inside.
Visitors to the cave will see stalagmites and stalactites. As well as nu-
merous flowstone formations, columns, draperies, cave bacon and soda
straws that have formed in the Foggy Cave.
Long time Ranch member and caving enthusiast, Jerry Pusch, will be
heading up the “Foggy Cave Exploration Day”. After having members
question Jerry about cave locations and caving information, Jerry has
decided that he would like to volunteer his time share information about
Ranch Caves, Caving Safety and Cave Preservation. Jerry is volunteer-
ing his service to other members as a way to show other Ranch mem-
bers the natural cave beauty that is available on our Ranch.
What You Should Know Before Committing To Participating:
Foggy Cave is a “Wet” Cave! You will be in and out of water,
you will get wet and you will get muddy.
You will need to supply your own caving equipment.
You will have to climb and crawl in the cave so be aware of
your physical limitations.
Foggy cave trip will be suitable for all experience levels.
Participants must be at least 10 years of age. Participants who
are 15 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
There is no alcohol allowed.
Where will the “Foggy Cave Exploration” begin?
Participants will meet at the T-Top at 9:30am on Saturday, Au-
gust 4th 2012. The group will be leaving at 10:00am for the
cave trip.
Prior to departure, participants will be instructed on cave safety
and cave preservation.
Participants will travel as a group to Foggy Cave.
Participants will be responsible for their own transportation to
the cave entrance. The road to Foggy Cave is accessible by
automobile but you will need to plan on walking about ¼ of a
mile on the trail. ATV riders will be able to park much closer
to the cave entrance.
How long will the cave exploration last?
Because you are providing your own transportation to the cave,
the amount of time you spend in the cave is up to you. There
will be several volunteers who are familiar with the cave who
will take you back out of the cave when you are ready to return.
The maximum amount of time the cave exploration will last is
3 hours.
Participants will be required to notify the volunteers of their
departure from the cave to assure that all are safely out of the
cave.

What recommended supplies/equipment will I need to bring?
Participants should wear the appropriate clothing. Long pants and long sleeve shirt will help
protect your skin from cuts and abrasions. Light weight coveralls are recommended. You will
get wet and you will get muddy.
Participants are encouraged to wear gloves. The type does not matter as much as the gloves will
provide both protection and to allow closer examination of formation. Gardening gloves,
“Jersey” gloves and rubber “finger tipped” gloves work best.
Participants should wear the appropriate shoes. Water shoes and tennis shoes that fit securely to
your feet will work best. Flip-Flops, sandals and other loose fitting shoes can be the cause for
an injury and will not be acceptable.
Knee pads are not a requirement but will make your crawling journey more comfortable.
Helmets are recommended. Bicycle helmets work well and there are some helmets available for
check out in the youth center. If you use a helmet from the youth center, you are required to
clean the helmet before you return it.
Flash lights will be needed in the cave. Head lamps are preferred so that your hands stay free.
Water resistant lights are recommended. Make sure you have fresh batter-
ies in your light before you begin. Extra batteries are always a good idea.
Water bottles are recommended. Water is the only drink you may bring
into the cave.
Bringing a camera! There are many beautiful formations in the Foggy
Cave. Water camera’s work best but if bringing a more traditional camera
be certain to store in a tightly sealed Ziploc type bag.
Small fanny packs or backpacks are suggested to allow your hands a more free range of move-
ment.
How to I participate in the “Foggy Cave Exploration Day”?
Space is limited. You will need to sign-up for the group at the Gate House or you may email
your participation to [email protected] Emails from the participants will then be for-
warded to Jerry Pusch to confirm your reservation. Please include your name, mailing address,
membership number and number of people in your group. In the email subject line, state
“Foggy Cave Exploration”.
There is not a fee for participating. Jerry Pusch is volunteering his
knowledge and time to Ranch members.
Participants must be at the T-Top at 10am on Saturday, August 4th to
participate with the group.
Participants must pledge that they will act responsibly at all times dur-
ing the caving trip.
Participants must pledge that they
will follow the guidance of Mr.
Pusch while participating.
Basic Caving Rules
Wear appropriate clothing
No Alcohol
Bring only water into the cave
Carry out what you carry in
Know your physical Limits
Always stay with the group
Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but carefully placed footprints & kill nothing but time!
If you have an interest in caving, especially caving at Cloud 9 Ranch, you are encouraged to be involved
in the “Foggy Cave Exploration Day”. This could be your once in a life-
time chance to enjoy one of the most beautiful caves on the property. And
most importantly, you will have the chance to meet other C9R members
who share similar likes and interests. This is a great opportunity to meet
and enjoy a great family time at Cloud 9 Ranch.

There is always something each of us can do while we are at
Cloud 9 Ranch. One of the pit stops along the ATV Trails is lo-
cated just across from the Lonesome Pines Campground. That’s
right, it is Valley Star School. On these hot summer days, why
not make a point to stop by and visit the Valley Star School.
Here is a great example of why you and your family should spend
some time visiting the Valley Star School…………….
A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own
childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a
swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We
rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The
little girl was wide-eyed, taking this in. At last she said, "I sure
wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"
We hope to see you at the Valley Star School House.

See you there!
On September 8th during Employee Appreciation Day, we will be
sponsoring an EMPLOYEE SHOPPING SPREE for Ranch em-
ployees and their families. Keeping in mind that many of our
employees will be laid off in September, we are going to try and
help bridge that financial gap for them with the help and generos-
ity of the membership.
This will happen in several ways.
GROCERY SHOPPING SPREE: (This event will take
the place of the Christmas in September done in previous
years.) On Employee Appreciation Day, there will be a
“grocery store” set up for the employees. Names of em-
ployees will be drawn for a chance to “shop.” They will
be able to win an amount of seconds to gather what they
want in a shopping bag. What we are asking is that
members donate non-perishable grocery items or house-
hold supplies to the EMPLOYEE STORE. DROP OFF
PLACE FOR THESE ITEMS IS THE NEW RANGER’S
STATION BUILDING by the gatehouse. When you are
arriving or leaving, drop your items off any time of the
day or night. SUGGESTION: Think of this event when
you are leaving the Ranch and have those items to carry
back home or you usually give to another camper. If
you want to donate money for us to do your shopping for
the items, drop off your cash donations at the Ranch Of-
fice Window or Gatehouse in an envelope marked EM-
PLOYEE APPRECIATION SHOPPING SPREE or make
checks payable to Cloud 9 Ranch with memo: Shopping
Spree. Our goal is to have at least $600 worth of grocer-
ies to spread around to as many employees as it lasts.
Your donation can help make it happen!!!
CRAFT HOUSE IS ALSO SPONSORING A BAG
SALE FOR EMPLOYEE’S ONLY. Volunteers at the
Craft House will provide “bag shopping” from the flea
market room for employees (the Craft House does not
include consignment items in bag sales). Employee will
pay a small fee and fill a bag with as many items as they
can stuff in it. Member generosity of slightly used and/or
new items can be a great buy for an employee. Take
these items to the Craft House in Wilder Springs before
the Labor Day weekend so they can be processed and
ready for the employees to browse.
Stayed tuned for more opportunities to honor our C9R
Employees at the end of the season on September 8th and

involvement get many Ranch projects completed. Members,
Todd and Traci Wiley, of West Plains, have donated fencing to protect the base of the new WiFi
tower located at Lonnie’s Look-out. You can thank the Wiley’s by stopping by Wiley Fence com-
pany in West Plains, Missouri.
Cloud 9 Ranch Staff
has been working on cleaning up the road
way to Lonnie’s Look-out. This project will be on going until fully
completed. At times, some of the area will be shut down due to
the construction work. Please be courteous
and obey posted signs in the area.
The C9R IT Department has been working for weeks
getting the WiFi service available in all campgrounds. This large donation of equipment was donated by a
fellow member, Ray Lejeunne. Along with this great service, Robert in the IT department is working hard to make sure that all members have the opportunity
to stay informed of Ranch news & events. Along with access on Facebook & the C9R.com website, you can also have the 9 Lines sent directly to your email box.
If you would like to have this free service, simply con-tact the office and ask to be included in the 9-Lines
email group. This is a great way to stay informed even when you can’t be at the Ranch.
The Ranch Riders
Club, though seen taking a break, has
completed the fire ring restoration pro-ject up at Lonnie’s.

deschel, and Board Member, Kurt Wil-
banks check the quality of their work. Lookin’ good fellers’
the new benches are a nice addition to the
Lookout area!
