The Joy of Volunteering….

Throughout the years I’ve been coming to the Ranch, aside from

being a director, I’ve spent many hours volunteering my time at

the many activities the Ranch offers through the season. It’s

given me a great opportunity to meet with and talk to a great

cross-section of the membership, whose interests vary widely.

One of my favorite places to volunteer is our Craft House. It’s

always fun to see what’s newly donated, and to share the joys

when a member finds “just what they were looking for”. It’s in-

teresting to talk to members who bring in their handcrafted items

for sale or consignment, and learning about their craft. Most of

those who volunteer are accomplished crafters and are always

willing to share their knowledge with others. It’s fun to rear-

range the shelves, and make the displays attractive and appealing

to potential shoppers. There’s always something exciting and

interesting happening at the Craft House!

Another of my favorite volunteer jobs is working at the Poker

Runs, which is new to me as of 2012. There’s a variety of tasks

to putting on a successful poker run – from flagging and unflag-

ging the trails, (great for learning the trails and building confi-

dence in ATV riding), selling merchandise, signing up partici-

pants, calculating the scores, and just enjoying the crowd who

seem to always have a great time, whether they win or not.

In the past, I’ve also volunteered at the various one day events

that have taken place…Employee Appreciation Day, Casino

Night, Family Bingo, cleaning and seasonally decorating the Na-

ture’s Agape Garden at the front gate, highway cleanup, and even

cleaning tables in the restaurant when they’ve been shorthanded.

Not all volunteer jobs are planned – some arise on the spur of the

moment. However they come up, it’s always left me with the

feeling of giving back and contributing to the overall improve-

ment and enjoyment of the Ranch.

I urge all members to give up an hour or two of their time when

they can to volunteer for the activity of their choice. The com-

panionship and memories made, and friendships created all con-

tribute to the “pride of ownership” we all feel as members of this

wonderful Ozark paradise.

Cloud 9 Ranch Management and staff have been working hard to

make the Ranch Amenities such as the Restaurant and Trading

Post more accommodating for the membership. There has been

some restructuring done in these areas that will help us achieve

that goal. Some of the changes that have taken place will allow

the Ranch to operate these areas with a lower amount of labor

than before. These changes have been ongoing for the past few

months and we have finally reached a point where we can start

implementing these changes in a way that will benefit the mem-

bership. Your support and understanding as we incorporate these

changes is greatly needed. Regardless if you are visiting us for

Pay It Forward~

Pride in ownership that will

Just in case you’ve never met this couple, let us intro-

duce you to Chuck and Helene Allen. They are Cloud 9

Ranch members who came up with an idea that will

benefit Cloud 9 Ranch for future generations. It’s a

“pay it forward” move on the part of this couple. First

of all, you need to know a little about Chuck and Helene

before we tell you what they are doing.

Chuck Allen retired from the Air Force in 1977

as a First Sergeant of Security Police Squadron in Cali-

fornia. They moved to Caulfield, Missouri in 1981 and

became very active in the Caulfield community, helping

organize a committee and Chairmen of the first Caulfield Fall Festival to raise funds to build

the fire house. Chuck became Vice-President and Helene Secretary-Treasurer of the Caulfield

Volunteer Fire Department when it was established in 1982. The couple bought a Cloud 9

Ranch membership around 1983 (when the prices were developer-sized). Living so close, they

didn’t camp overnight at the Ranch but invested to enjoy the Ranch in their retirement years.

Helene is from Hawaii and around 1986 they moved there to care for Helene’s aging

parents. Staying in Hawaii for over 20 years, in 2010 Chuck retired as a Parks/Recreation

Maintenance Superintendent, Helene retired as a legal assistant, and they moved back stateside,

settling in San Antonio, TX. They have three sons, 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren

scattered all over the USA.

Cloud 9 Ranch members for almost 30 years but living in Hawaii for most of that time,

Chuck and Helene were unable to visit Cloud 9 Ranch since they left Caulfield in 1986. How-

ever, they continually supported Cloud 9 Ranch, even sending checks when hearing of a project

or need, especially the Employee Appreciation program. Chuck and Helene are some of the

first Charter Members of the Cloud 9 Cruisers Club, a service club of dedicated owners who

donate money and time to ranch service and support management and ranch improvements with

fundraising events. In both 2010 and 2011, they fulfilled part of their retirement dream and

were able to spend a few weeks on the Ranch meeting people and building lasting friendships.

Now, why should you know all of this? This is a bittersweet time in Chuck and

Helene’s life, as they are thankful for family and friends, and the life they have together, but

realize it is time to make some changes. Now a retired couple living on social security, the rig-

ors of travel and health issues, retirement didn’t turn out to include Cloud 9 Ranch as much as

they had planned. Faced with facts of life, hard decisions had to be made; one of which is giv-

ing up their Cloud 9 Ranch membership. They had several options to consider; like selling or

deeding back. But they didn’t do either. They have a much better idea; donating their long-

time membership to the C9R Fire Department Building Fund, where raffle tickets will be sold

and the membership deeded to a new ranch family on New Year’s Eve. The new member’s

2013 Maintenance Fees will be paid and all other proceeds of the raffle will go directly to the

Fire Department Building Fund. This is a wonderful gesture on the part of Chuck and Helene

Allen. Their longtime membership will still count for something. Their generosity will be me-

morialized in a way that many would never think of, let alone make it happen. Hopefully,

Chuck and Helene will be able to attend as our honored guests for the grand opening of our new

C9R Fire Department building when it becomes a reality. But first, we’ve got to help them sell

those raffle tickets over the next few months!!!

Raffle tickets for a Cloud 9 Ranch Membership (includes 2013 Maintenance Fees paid)

are available for $5.00 each or 3 for $10. They are printed in packets of 12 tickets and will be

distributed to anyone who wants to help sell them. You can even purchase an entire packet for

ONLY $40 (a $20 savings off the one-ticket price). If you want to buy raffle tickets or help sell

them, call the Ranch Office at (417-284-7321).

Because of just a little bit of creative thinking outside the box, on New Year’s Eve 2012

one lucky new member of our Cloud 9 Ranch family will know the membership they own was

cherished for so many years and comes with a history of deep pride of ownership!!! Thank

you, Chuck and Helene Allen for support C9R over the years. We at Cloud 9 Ranch hope your

golden years bring you many blessings!

Who is Holly Spencer?

This week’s employee article is different from the rest. Holly

Spencer, one of the ladies in our Ranch’s Front Office, has experi-

enced Cloud 9 Ranch since infancy. She has watched the changes,

both as a child, an adult and an employee. She’s seen the changes

from different aspects. Holly’s happy personality is sometimes lost

in the stress of daily work in the office.

Holly Towell (now Spencer) was born in Brighton, IL and

grew up there. However, her summers at Cloud 9 Ranch was the

highlight every year spending time her family, cousins and friends.

In fact, her first visit to Cloud 9 was in 1989, when Holly was only

three weeks old. Her parents had just purchased their membership and came to the Ranch stay-

ing in a rental. The story goes that Holly slept in a little red wagon and her mother relates that

the first night at the Ranch is the first night Holly slept the entire night.

The Towell’s always loved the Ozarks and wanted to buy land and build a home. So, in

2007, only a few months after Holly graduated from Southwestern High School, they bought

land close to the Ranch. Not only that, but they moved onto the Ranch while their house was

being built. Holly was hired at the Gatehouse that August. She enrolled in college at ASU in

Mountain Home and completed two years. Living in a camper, working and going to school

were not what she had always dreamed of. Holly admits this was one of the worst times of her

life. To add to her disappointment, her then boyfriend Tommy was having issues on the Ranch

and received a suspension for being in the Clubhouse after it was supposed to be closed.

Experiences of Cloud 9 Ranch for Holly were not always so dramatic. Well, dramatic

maybe, but with a child-like twist. Spending every summer on the Ranch was always filled

with family fun when cousins and friends would all arrive at the same time. Back then there

were many things for the children and younger teenagers to do to occupy their time like arcade

games, jukebox, pool tables were at the Big Top where they gathered every day. She remem-

bers always being involved in putting on skits and performances for the parents and anyone

who would stop in and watch. One particular memory that comes up at family gatherings

when Holly was around 10 years old, was a fake wedding that was held between one of her

cousin Sam and a boy she met , who fell in love one summer. The others put together the

“wedding” for them on the steps of the Wilder Stage Stop. Watching Holly tell this story, it

was easy to see this was a fond memory that will be with her forever. Another event Holly re-

lated was she met her husband Tommy when she was very young, he offered she and her cousin

a ride while they were walking down the main road. There are lots of memories of Cloud 9 for

Holly that have shaped her life far more than many of us will ever realize in our lifetime.

Holly’s memories of Cloud 9 have also shaped her future thoughts. She is interested in

bringing back the family atmosphere to Cloud 9 Ranch where families and teens have a place to

congregate and interact with activities, building lasting friendships from year to year. She

doesn’t see this on the Ranch today and that saddens her. Holly is willing to do anything to

help bring back activities for the teens because it holds so many good memories for her.

Holly Towell and Tommy Spencer were married in June 2010. They have a son Noah,

who is now 2. Now, when Holly can enjoy her membership on Cloud 9, it’s a lot different than

her childhood days. She and Tommy spend their Ranch time with Noah throwing rocks in the

stream and discovering things like animals and bugs. Noah loves to ride the ATV, so that’s al-

ways a family event when they find the time.

Holly’s employment at C9R has changed over the years; spending about a year at the

gatehouse, then housekeeping and now as an office employee for the last three years. When

Holly was asked how the membership could help her in her job, she laughed a really big laugh.

Her reply through the laughter is, “The biggest obstacle in my job, which is everything that

happens in the office during the day, is people who send in checks with the wrong information,

no membership number, two different amounts from where the numbers are and what is written

out and no documentation as to what the checks are for. Another laugh, and Holly said,

“People really have no idea how many members there are with the last name of SMITH.”

Holly says her life is not very interesting, even considers herself boring. At home Holly

and Tommy live on a tight budget, don’t even have a television. She hates housework and

never seems to get anything accomplished, although she loved her housekeeping job here at the

Ranch; just didn’t like being out in the weather, hot or cold, all the time. (continued on page 8)

Speaking about a tight budget, one thing that others may not real-

ize is that Holly Spencer is the sole breadwinner for her family.

Tommy was severely injured on the job several years ago and is

totally disabled. He is waiting on a court ruling now for disabil-

ity, but until that happens, Holly supports the family and Tommy

is Mr. Mom taking care of Noah at home. Holly has always been

thankful for her jobs at Cloud 9 Ranch, but once Tommy’s case is

settled her hopes and dreams are to continue her college educa-

tion in the medical field. Holly put it best when she got a little

serious, and without laughing said, “I want to one day be able to

come back to the Ranch as a member and enjoy it, let Noah enjoy

it like I did as a child. We’ve got to do something for the next

generation of Cloud 9 Ranch owners.” Yes, we do, Holly

Spencer, YES, WE DO!!

Helpful Hint When Storing your ATV

As the end of the year draws near, many of our members start

thinking about winterizing their campers and ATV’s. Here is a

helpful hint for preparing your ATV for outside storage. Many

members will simply cover there ATV with a tarp for the winter.

While a simple tarp cover might work fine for short periods of

time, longer periods of time you may need some extra care. If

you plan to cover your ATV with a tarp for the winter, take an

extra step that will save you some time and money in the long

run. You know those “Swim Noodles” that are now taking up

space in the garage? Use those noodles to wrap the handle bars

before you cover your ATV with the tarp. Most of the tarp wear-

ing comes from the handle bar area. The extra protection of the

“noodles” will help to keep the tarp from wearing and tearing

during the winter keeping your ATV better protected.

ficers, Barb Gardner, Debbie Davis, or Dale

Cox, or stop in at the Ranch Riders building

when the building is open.

The RRC will be joining in on the Witch Hunt,

Halloween weekend. If you would like to help

with the decorations or be a part of the fun,

please contact Debbie Davis or Cindi Morrison.

We hope many get to visit the ranch this fall to

enjoy the fall colors, campfires and the great

trail system.

The RRC accepts and appreciates all the great

donations. If you need an item for your ATV or

Camper, please check with the RRC or Dale.

We have an assortment of nuts, bolts, screws,

nails and some tools available to use.

Please help to keep the ranch

clean and Ride Responsible!

Is there Space for Me?

The new Compound 6, Pay to Park Compound

facility is now open and filling up fast! The pay

to park area is a benefit to those members who

prefer the convenience of having your own com-

pound key and assigned parking spot for your

camper. Owners who use the “Pay to Park Com-

pound” do not have to wait on Rangers and they

do not have to worry about purchasing compound

tickets. Compound 6 is a simpler way for you to

store your camper and enclosed cargo trailers.

Requirements for Storage in Compound 6

$120 Fee for using Compound 6-One year

service running from November 2012 to

November 2013.

If purchased after November 15th, the re-

maining time will be pro-rated out.

Your Camper must be a “livable” camper.

Your Cargo Trailer must be Factory built.

You must keep your space clean & neatly

stored.

What Space is Available?

Compound 6 offers individual spacing for

single units

Compound 6 offers double spacing for

Members who wish to store both a camper

and a cargo unit.

For more information on spacing available, re-

quirements and specific Compound 6 questions,

please contact Holly in the Accounting Office.

Holly can be reached at 417-284-7321 ext 102.

Don’t forget to stop by and check out

the new archery range that is located

behind the Big Top. There is a sign

located between the tennis courts and

pool that indicate where you can park

your ATV while you are at the Archery

Range.

Friendly Reminder Please remember to check in at the gate

house and pick up the “Red” flag if you

are using the Shooting Range. The

“Red” flag must be displayed on the

flag pole located at the shooting range

driveway. This lets others know that

the shooting range is being used.
