Helen Steele announced that next week was Mental Health Week, our Guest Speaker would be Tim Lenten of Bendigo Mental Health Services. Members were encouraged to bring their partners or just a friend - all were asked to wear a hat for the night. Pam Luxford told us that the Swap Meet Catering Committee had met again. The Swap Meet is on 11/12/13th November and those members who haven't yet put their names down for a shift were asked to do so ASAP. John Lindsay spoke on our Trailer Raffle, ticket sales so far are at the same level as this time last year. The wet weather has caused us to change Selling Venues quite a bit and this week the Trailer would be at Lansell Square for the whole week because of predicted rain. Bryan Barras announced that $4000 had been banked so far from ticket sales. President Lyn handed around a flyer about the Eaglehawk Rotary Club's Trivia Night at the Bendigo Exhibition Centre on Friday 14th October- $20 per person. Lyn also announced the volunteers for the BBQ at Light the Night at Lake Weeroona on Friday 7th October. Mike Nihill offered to tow the BBQ trailer to the event. It was mentioned last night that everyone should do a follow up with their potential new members – in this case those who were brought along to the Wine Launch. So could everyone who had a potential candidate there that night, could email Lyn the name and phone number (of new member) and then Lyn would call them, thank you... There was no Guest Speaker and a short discussion took place on the a few topics. Several members congratulated Pres. Lyn and her committee on the success of the Wine Launch. Discussion also took place on the Club's BBQ Trailer and the upgrading required, Mike is attending to these matters. Once again Bruce Ellwood is taking care of Raffle Ticket Sales by members themselves, everyone is asked to see Bruce for their allocation of Raffle Books. Cheers Kevin Reminder to all that we are now selling our wonderful wine. Members please promote our Club 18 308 Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 made from Rotarian handpicked Turners Crossing grapes whose vineyard is in the banks of the Loddon River with limestone pebble soil being the secret of the grape quality. Price per case of 12 $200.00; per 6 bottles $100.00; per bottle $ 20.00. Please contact President Lyn with orders.

CLUB NOTICEBOARD

YOUTH SERVICES: - Two more Thank you notes from our NYSF representatives.

Dear Rotary Clubs of Bendigo.

I am Lennon Logan, one of the select few that has been voted to represent district 9800 in the upcoming event, National Youth Science Forum. I was nearly scared off by the large sum of money that was required me to travel to Canberra. If it was not for the combined strength of the Rotary Clubs of Bendigo to crowd fund for me to then be able to travel to Canberra. I cannot express the amount of gratitude that I have for your actions and in any way possible I’d love to return a favour but I am disappointed that anything I am to do will not be able to show how sincerely grateful I am for everything you have done for me. Thank you Extraordinarily much, Lennon Logan.

Dear Lynne, I am writing to express my sincere and genuine gratitude for the support that I have received from the combined Bendigo Rotary Clubs in subsidising my attendance to the National Youth Science Forum in January. This generous contribution to the cost of attending has enabled me to participate. I am genuinely thankful, as are my parents. I would be very grateful to you if you could please pass this letter of thanks onto each of the respective clubs. I am really looking forward to participating in the NYSF and intend to make the most of every opportunity during my time in January. As well as the five schools that I have nominated to promote Rotary and the NYSF, I am also willing to offer my support to Rotary in other ways, so please feel free to contact me if you think that I can promote Rotary and/or the NYSF more broadly. Additionally, you might be pleased to know that I have already taken the opportunity to speak at my own school assembly to promote both Rotary and the NYSF. My chemistry teacher is also working with the school to ensure the NYSF is well promoted so that future students can explore the opportunity. As you know, this is an amazing opportunity and I am very fortunate to have been accepted. Thank you again for your co-ordination of this support. Yours sincerely, Hannah Blake

RAFFLE ROSTER: I have been asked to organize the Members' Roster for ticket selling for this year's trailer raffle. I'm happy to do that, but ask for your help in making the job a little easier.

We need sellers for Friday nights and all day on Sundays. We also need trailer towers, once again for Friday nights?? Saturdays AM & PM, Sundays AM & PM. We will desperately need help with towing, as some of our previous towers are unavailable this year. PLEASE GIVE TOWING SERIOUS CONSIDERATION. Meanwhile, please let me know by return email (if you haven’t already done so), which days or weekends in the raffle period you are UNAVAILABLE TO WORK. Example: I can tow, or I can tow and sell, or I can just sell - but not on 1-2nd Oct., last weekend in Nov., or after a certain date, or between certain dates or whatever. I need this information in print form by email or given to me, not a phone call please I need this information in print form by email, [email protected] or [email protected] - either will get me. After successful courses in July and August we have been requested to hold another course before the end of 2016. Bendigo-Strathdale Rotary have offered to support students to attend for the price of the resource book $20.00. This is thrilling as it means that students of social sciences and education will have better knowledge of mental health issues in their personal and professional lives. Please pass this on to whom to think may be relevant. Contact me for a chat if you wish to know more. 0458234071 Please feel free to use application forms and flyers provided to spread the good news. Kind regards, Nancy Cutlack

Trachoma became the project of Fred Hollows and that work still continues overseas today but Australia

is the only developed country in the world where trachoma is endemic.

Trachoma is a bacterial eye infection, not unlike the common ‘pink-eye’ or conjunctivitis. Repeated

reinfection, combined with the body’s immune reaction, often has devastating consequences.

Fellow Rotarians,

The Rotary Club of Melbourne is seeking your Club’s support. We are hosting a “Peony Harvest

Picnic” at Romswood Farm on Sunday November 13th. The event is a fundraiser to assist the Club’s

across District initiative to eliminate Trachoma within Australia and is described in the email

below and the flyer attached.

We would be grateful if your Club would join us in supporting this initiative by promoting this event through your Club’s networks, and of course family and friends would be most welcome. Romswood Farm www.romswoodfarm.com.au is situated in the Macedon Ranges and is 15 minutes from Woodend - and it should be glorious on the day. Should you have any questions about the event please do not hesitate to give me a call. Hoping that we can see you there on the day and thank-you in advance for your support. Bookings via Trybooking: https://www.trybooking.com/MUPL Regards Bernie McIntosh, Rotary Club of Melbourne, Welfare of the Young Committee Chair mob: 0409 182 456 See flyer attached to opening email.

Australian Rotary Health – Lift the Lid on mental illness campaign - starts Friday 7 October 2016 The aim of our campaign is to raise funds from the general public to significantly increase our research into mental illness prevention.

Update on the Lift the Lid on mental illness campaign October 7th 2016

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness campaign packages are progressively being distributed to D9800 Rotary Clubs by members of the ARH committee and with the help of several AG's. There have been several recent developments with management of the Victorian railway network and Victorian Bunnings outlets of which some Presidents have been advised but this email will bring you all up to date.

Negotiations have been completed with Metro Trains which has ordered 2,500 stickers for their staff to use in support on the day and all their stations are available for Rotarians to use when collecting funds. Those D9800 clubs close to major railway stations have already been advised of the approval for collection on 7th October and those clubs are considering their options but may

Page 6: FROM OUR PRESIDENT LYNNY’S LINES · 2016. 9. 27. · FROM THE ASSISTANT EDITOR - KEV’S KNOTES Brian Owens advised that we would be visiting Specimen Cottage on Tuesday 18th Oct.,

require support from cluster clubs. Members need to wear the stickers provided and where available their Rotary badges and can collect funds using collection containers with “Lift the Lid” stickers prominent.

For collections at the Flinders Street/CBD railway loop we are looking for a co-ordinator and volunteers from those clubs not committing to Bunnings or local railway collections and any help from Presidents would be welcomed.

V line have this week agreed to allow Rotary Clubs to collect at stations on their network and our ARH committee in the Calder and Goldfields Clusters will be discussing the possible manning of stations with local Presidents within the clusters.

Bunnings has also given the green light for Lift the Lid to collect at all their 67 Victorian stores on 7th October and the D9800 clubs where Bunnings stores are located have been provided with the letter of authority to the Activities Organiser at each store. Bunnings will set them up with a desk on the day and the Club needs to supply members with the posters plus a collection can and wear the stickers provided plus their Rotary Badges if available to collect for Lift the Lid. Some Clubs will be able to man the Bunnings store desks but smaller clubs may seek the assistance from clubs in their clusters.

Funds collected to be paid into designated NAB account BSB 082330 Acct 027300054 as soon as practicable. Jenny Towe from ARH Parramatta has asked that clubs depositing at NAB also send her an email with the Club name and amount deposited to [email protected] as from personal experience most banks require number references and not letters.

PDG Murray Verso has advised that for clubs wishing to locate collection containers, one option is to contact PMG services in Braeside. They have a minimum of 10 plastic bases and 20 lids for only $41.00. (Website: http://www.pmgeng.com.au/about1?PageID=08374cfe-6648-4498-a052-c3855649d309). Another avenue of supply is Ability Works at Kew www.abilityworks.com.au.

Widespread promotion to the Victorian public will increase over the following weeks with the support we will receive from Herald Sun newspapers, Neil Mitchell from 3AW, Robert Doyle Lord mayor of Melbourne and Linda Dessau Governor of Victoria and the LTL Facebook page is well and truly up and running. Our priority is now to share Facebook and ask as many people to 'like' the page and to share the page as possible with this link https://www.facebook.com/Lift-The-Lid-1208010939258798/?fref=ts.

Not only is “Lift the Lid” a fund raiser but raises the awareness of Rotary in the district and has potential to attract new members.

Any issues or feedback can be referred to your D9800 ARH committee contact or me at [email protected] or by phone on 0409 136 100 or 9821 0444.

Download the Lift the Lid Guidelines Ron Adams D9800 ARH Committee.

There is no greater problem currently facing our society and, if we are to help future generations of young Australians, we need to do something now. There are several fine organisations which treat and support those with mental health issues … but we want to look ahead and learn through research how to prevent these illnesses happening."

MEMBERSHIP: Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Join Rotary When we’re speaking about Rotary to prospective and existing members, often we talk about the value of giving back to the community and making the world a better place. But have you ever considered discussing the personal health benefits? A new factsheet from volunteering Australia1 might help you do just that. Drawing on existing research, Volunteering Australia has compiled some important facts about volunteering and happiness: · Volunteers are happier, healthier and sleep better than those who don’t volunteer · 96% of volunteers say it “makes people happier” · 95% of volunteers say that volunteering is related to feelings of wellbeing · Volunteering results in a ‘helpers’ high’, a powerful physical and emotional feeling experienced when directly helping others Just a few hours of volunteer work make a difference in happiness and mood · Sustained volunteering is associated with better mental health · Altruistic emotions and behaviours are associated with greater wellbeing, health and longevity · A strong correlation exists between the wellbeing, happiness, health and longevity of people who are emotionally kind and compassionate in their charitable helping activities · The experience of helping others provides meaning, a sense of self-worth, a social role and health enhancement · Volunteering is highly associated with greater health and happiness. So next time you’re discussing the benefits of Rotary, don’t forget to mention that volunteering, happiness and a long life go hand in hand. What a fantastic value proposition! 1 Get the facts at: http://www.volunteeringaustralia.org/wp-content/uploads/Media-Backgrounder-Volunteering-and-Happiness-The-Facts-FINAL1.pdf
