Theatre InformationEMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES In the event of an emergency, please wait for an announcement for further instructions. Ushers will be available for assistance.

FOOD AND DRINK are not allowed in the Theatre. Bottled water is permitted, as well as beverages purchased in lidded Souvenir Cups at the bar in the lobby.

SMOKING POLICY According to state law, smoking is NOT allowed within 25 feet of any door, nor in any part of the Theatre.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS If you need to be reached during a performance, please leave your exact seat number and the House Manager’s number with your service or sitter. In Issaquah (425) 392-1942 x100 In Everett (425) 257-6368

YOUNG CHILDREN Children under four are not permitted in the main theatre space in Issaquah or Everett. In Issaquah, the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre has comfortable, soundproof family rooms for families with young children or those who may wish to speak during the show. Subscribers may exchange into the family rooms when a sitter cannot be found. When bringing children over four into the main theatre, please instruct them in proper theatre behavior. It is helpful to familiarize them with the story and the score in advance.

ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating is available. Please advise your ticket seller when purchasing tickets if you require wheelchair seating. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is provided during select performances at the Francis J. Gaudette theatre. Please contact the Box Office for more details.

LISTENING SYSTEM The Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the Everett Performing Arts Center have hearing loop systems which are compatible with most hearing aids. Headsets are available in both venues on a first-come, first-served basis from the House Manager and are free of charge with a valid ID.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Whether it rains, sleets, snows or blows, only a power outage or building destruction will prevent a performance from taking place as scheduled.

PATRON CONSIDERATIONS Please arrive on time. Check your tickets for your performance time. Late arrivals are very disruptive to fellow patrons and to the artists onstage. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the Theatre. Patrons arriving late will not be seated until a suitable pause in the performance at the House Manager’s discretion. Please turn off all pagers, cellular phones and watch alarms before entering the Theatre. No text messaging is allowed during the performance. No photography, video or sound recording of any performance is allowed based on royalty and union agreements. Be aware that talking, humming and tapping feet during a performance is also disruptive to the patrons around you. Before the overture begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums like the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the Everett Performing Arts Center, even the actors can hear these seemingly small noises. Please use moderation in applying perfume, cologne or lotion, as many people are allergic to scents. In consideration of your fellow patrons and the actors, please do not leave the performance during the curtain call.

SynopsisTime: The year 1902Place: Mayfair, England at Loam Manor, and an island in the Tropics.

The aristocratic English household of Lord Loam, run with great precision by loyal butler Crichton, prepares to send its family on a voyage across the sea. Lady Mary, Lord Loam’s haughty eldest daughter, bids farewell to her fiancée, the pompous Lord Brocklehurst. She and her two sisters, Lady Catherine and Lady Agatha, are joined on their journey by Loam’s uppity nephew, Ernest, the family clergyman, and by a turn of events, Crichton and a spunky kitchen wench. When a shipwreck leaves the castaways on an island without their worldly comforts, their stations and world views will be challenged and changed.

THE GIN GAMESNAPPY DIALOGUE AND QUICK WIT CRACKLE IN THIS PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING PLAY that was called “the closest thing the theatre offers to a duel at 10 paces” by The New York Times. On a lonely visitor’s day at a home for the aged, Weller teaches Fonsia to play Gin Rummy. But as the two get to know each other, and Fonsia goes on an instant winning streak, the tension starts to build within their new friendship. A collaboration between local Seattle legends Jeff Steitzer (Director), Kurt Beattie (Weller), and Marianne Owen (Fonsia), this tragic-comedy is full of humor, spirit, and more than a touch of warfare. CURTIS RHODES (Book, Music, and Additional Lyrics). Naturally inclined toward music, Curtis began playing the piano by ear at age five. After years of working in choirs, bands, and theatre ventures, he began seriously writing music when he composed incidental music for a production of J.M. Since then, he has written other works for the stage, including a 1930s screwball musical, A Holiday In Hollywood, for which he wrote libretto, score, and lyrics. He has written many piano solos, specialty numbers, choral works, and pieces for chamber ensembles, including “The Amherst Cycle,” which uses the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Based in Los Angeles, Curtis has worked as an actor and/or music director with Grove Shakespeare, PCPA Theatrefest, West Coast Ensemble, Western Stage, and Cabrillo Music Theatre, among others.

Author’s NotesAll creative endeavors have their proper moment — sometimes, it just takes a while

to marinate. For A Proper Place, that meant nearly two decades of shelf-sitting before we looked at it again three years ago with new eyes and began the real work to bring you the show you will see tonight.

The early stages of A Proper Place began in conservatory when Curtis performed the role of Ernest in J.M. Barrie’s 1902 play The Admirable Crichton, which is the original source material for the musical. After being asked to create incidental music for that production, he was inspired to create a full musical adaptation of the play. After a year of working on the piece alone, he joined up with Leslie to continue developing the show. After presenting several staged readings in Los Angeles, Leslie’s acting career began to take off and she moved to New York to pursue Broadway, and the project was shelved.

Fast-forward nearly twenty years later, we reconnected when Leslie “stumbled” upon our original demo recording of the piece. Out of the blue, she called Curtis and asked if he was interested in re-visiting this beautiful story. The answer was yes, and the timing couldn’t have been better. The huge success of Downton Abbey that had seeped into the American zeitgeist opened a door for A Proper Place to live again, and this time the development happened very quickly.

However, looking at a project through new eyes and twenty plus years of life experience behind them gave us an entirely new take on what initially began as a faithful adaptation of the original play. But we soon realized that we were compelled to explore the story from a different point-of-view, with a more modern perspective than could have been considered in its day. The result is a new version of the story that resonates with today’s audience, yet still honors the spirit of Barrie’s work. Themes of discovering one’s true place in the world run throughout the show and, while filled with frivolity, we enjoy the deeper questions of whether what you are born into is really where you belong.

For this production, we wish to thank Robb Hunt, Steve Tomkins, and the entire Village Theatre family for their commitment, support, and artistry in bringing our work to life. We’re grateful to Jerry Dixon, Kathryn Van Meter, and Tim Symons for their creative vision and guiding hand, a supremely talented cast and amazing crew, and to Bruce Monroe for the beautiful orchestrations.

Special thanks to Bob Allwine and Donna Lynn Hilton at Goodspeed Musicals for their huge role in our development journey, Greg Shaffert for making the connections for us to move forward, Karl Mansfield for his phenomenal transcription work, Ken & Trish Mahoney and other supporters for their generous contribution to our demo recording, and to the many artists who have helped us through the years in the show’s many incarnations, demos, and readings. A special thank you to our families who have been our biggest supporters.

is story has a long theatre lineage, and all its various adaptations stem from the same comic stage play, e Admirable Crichton. Written in 1902 by playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie, more commonly known as J.M. Barrie, e Admirable Crichton has been seen in multiple di erent forms over the last hundred years including acclaimed stage plays, television specials, motion picture features, and even a limited radio engagement.

Born in Scotland in 1860, novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie penned e Admirable Crichton two years before his greatest legacy, Peter Pan. As the acclaimed book critic Michael Dirad noted, “ e Admirable Crichton is probably Barrie’s most famous work a er Peter Pan.” Although he continued to write successful works throughout his life, they were constantly overshadowed by the many adventures of Peter and Wendy in Neverland.

e Admirable Crichton opened at the Duke of York’s eatre in London in 1902. e show quickly became known for its elaborate staging, and enjoyed a wildly successful run of 828 performances. On the heels of the success of the London production, it traveled to Broadway in 1903. Not even 30 years later, it was revived at the New Amsterdam eatre in New York in 1931. More recently, the show was revived again at the Royal Exchange in 1985 and in London in 1989 with Rex Harrison as Lord Loam.

e Admirable Crichton has enjoyed a rich life beyond the stage as well. e play was lmed for television in 1950 and

again in 1968. It was also adapted for lm twice – rst in 1918, and again in 1957 starring Kenneth More, Sally Ann Howes, and Cecily Parker – the latter going on to be the third most popular lm at the British box o ce that year. Just six years ago, the story was adapted as a Saturday Play for BBC Radio 4 starring Russell Tovey as Crichton.

In addition to the various direct adaptations, the story has also inspired many other plots, particularly in the world of cinema. Cecil B. DeMille’s silent lm Males and Females (1919) focuses on the relationship between a British aristocrat and her butler, Crichton. In the French comedy drama lm, Charlemagne (1933), a group of upper-class passengers are saved by a stoker who takes them to an island and rises to become their leader. e 1934 musical comedy We’re Not Dressing follows a female yacht owner who becomes stuck on an island with her socialite friends, a research team and a singing sailor.

Now, over a Century a er Barrie’s play opened in London,  e Admirable Crichton is ready to premiere again – this time with a new title. Leslie Becker and Curtis Rhodes began to work on the project casually in 1990, but truly dove in and put together a full script in 2013. Since then, the show has been seen in staged readings at Goodspeed Opera House and Village eatre’s own Festival of New Musicals in 2014. With the nishing touches of sets, costumes, and an all-star cast, A Proper Place is ready to set sail and continue the legacy of  e Admirable Crichton.

Village Theatre’s third show in The Beta Series, String, will be on stage June 2 – 18. The Beta Series is the only program in the country that gives new musicals this kind of chance to be tested as a fully staged production in front of a live audience.

Q. Welcome! Tell us about the show.

A. String is about the three Fates from Greek mythology. They spin, measure, and snip the string of everyone’s life on Earth. In our show, they don’t live in Greek antiquity. Zeus curses the three to live on Earth, where they wind up interacting with mortals – one of which the eldest Fate falls in love with. It’s basically a love story about a Greek God and a guy in the basement.

Q. What has the process been like in creating this new musical?

A. With a musical, you look at it on the page and you don’t know what it is. You just don’t know, even when you’re writing it. You have an idea, but music is such a force in the room, it’s almost three-dimensional. You have to have actors singing it to know how it’s working, how it’s moving.

Q. How did you hear about Village Theatre, and why do you feel like Village Originals was a good fit for you?

A. We did a 45-minute version of act one of String at the National Alliance for Music Theatre’s Festival of New Musicals in New York City. Robb Hunt saw it and liked it,

so we submitted the script to the Village Originals program. Village Theatre reached out and let us know they had real, genuine interest. So we said yes to the opportunity, and here we are!

Q. You were part of the Village Originals Festival of New Musicals, what did you learn from that experience?

A. Any time you see your show in front of a big audience, especially in a town that isn’t yours, you learn new things. Every audience is different, and every region is different. You find certain things that weren’t working somewhere else might work now, or you figure out what problems arise everywhere you go. You also learn what gets the same laughs everywhere you go and what’s consistent.

 Q. We’re so excited to have String as a part of The Beta Series in June. Can you talk about what’s next, and what your vision and the trajectory is going to be for this show?

 A. We’ll probably begin with a different draft for The Beta Series, and during the entire process we plan to be doing rewrites constantly. In the beginning, when the actors are just learning it, our rewrites will stay sort of basic. But then there will be the production part where it’s night after night in front of an audience. At that point we’ll do the real work.

ROBB HUNT (Executive Producer) helped found Village Theatre in 1979 and has been involved as producer for the theatre ever since. Robb was an avid performer for many years with experience as

a principal actor and dancer in several Puget Sound theatre companies. With a background in business, Robb was a strong hand as a consultant in the field of Arts Management; several of his clients included The 5th Avenue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Symphony, The Museum of Flight, The Carnegie, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Robb is dedicated to commissioning and developing musicals and has been the driving force in the inclusion of new musicals in Village Theatre programming. He has collaborated on the creation of productions such as Eleanor, Next To Normal, The Ark, and Making Tracks. Village Theatre has become an active member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, and Robb has served on its New Works committee and on the Board of Directors. He has also served as a peer panelist and evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

STEVE TOMKINS (Artistic Director) began his active professional arts career in Seattle in 1972 as a member of The Empty Space’s acting company. He has been the artistic director at

Village Theatre for the past 20 years. Prior to his time here, he was the artistic director at Civic Light Opera for several years. As a director and choreographer, Steve’s regional work has been seen at The Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT, and TAG. For seven years, Steve staged and choreographed production shows with Greg Thompson Productions. He has directed and choreographed numerous productions at Village Theatre, including: Grease, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Joseph…, The Ark, Annie, West Side Story, Peter Pan, La Cage Aux Folles, Oklahoma!, Damn Yankees, How to Succeed…, South Pacific, Play It By Heart, The Music Man, CATS, Hello, Dolly!, EVITA, Bye Bye Birdie, …Jersey, The King and I, AIDA, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Stunt Girl, Chasing Nicolette, Meet Me in St. Louis, 42nd Street, Anne of Green Gables, Iron Curtain, Annie Get Your Gun, The Producers, Big River, Chicago, Les Misérables, Funny Girl, Mary Poppins, No Way To Treat A Lady, Billy Elliot, and Singin’ in the Rain.
