Bio

Originally from Baltimore, MD, Bob Conway received his commission as a US Navy ensign from the United States Naval Academy in 1985 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture. He reported to Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pensacola Florida that same year and earned his Naval Aviator wings as a rotary wing aviator in 1986. Bob’s Navy experiences includes various leadership positions with the Red Lions of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FIFTEEN (HS-15) assigned to CARRIER AIRWING SIX where during this three year tour he completed Mediterranean and Indian Ocean deployments onboard USS FORRESTAL (CV 59) in support of Operation Earnest Will from 1987 to 1990. He then became and instructor pilot with Helicopter anti-Submarine Squadron ONE (HS-1) and subsequently a catapult and arresting gear officer onboard USS SARATOGA (CV 60) in 1992 where he participated in operations off Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Adriatic Sea in 1992 and again in 1994. Bob attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he earned his Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1996 graduating with distinction. From there Bob returned to HS-15 in 1997 as head of the Aviation Safety, Training and the Operations departments. From 1999 to April 2002, Bob was assigned to the COMHSWINGPAC Weapons and Tactics Unit where he served as Officer-in-Charge and instructor pilot. In 2002 Bob reported to the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FIVE (HS-5) NIGHTDIPPERS as Executive Officer and assumed command of the same squadron November of 2003. HS-5 deployed to the Persian Gulf with CARRIER AIRWING SEVEN in USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. HS-5 won both the Battle Efficiency “E” and Safety “S” awards for 2004. He left the NIGHTDIPPERS in 2005 and reported to the aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as Navigator supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle from 2005 to 2007. Bob also served as Commander Naval Air Forces Assistant Chief of Staff (Safety) from 2007 to 2010 and as the Director of the School of Naval Aviation Safety at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fl until his retirement from active duty in September 2012. Bob is currently the Manager of Quality Engineering for Worldwide Safety and Assurance at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and recently stepped down as a member of the NASA Safety Advisory Panel after four years

Abstract: A look at the Disney process of creating a new attraction and designing it for maximized safety and fun! Discussed topics will include the Blue Sky concept, design and engineering, manufacturing and production, installation and testing, operational excellence and maintaining safety every day.

Grace Duffy

Bio

Grace has over 40 years’ experience in successful business and process management in corporate, government, education, and healthcare. Grace uses her experience as President, CEO and senior manager to help organizations improve. She has authored 13 texts and many articles on quality, leadership and organizational performance. She is a frequent speaker and trainer. Grace holds an MBA from Georgia State University. She is an ASQ CMQ/OE, CQIA, SSGB, and CQA. Grace is a LSS Master Black Belt, ASQ Fellow and Distinguished Service Medalist. Grace is the 2014 Quality Magazine Quality Person of the year and the 2016 recipient of the Asia-Pacific Quality Organization Milflora M. Gatchalian International Woman in Quality Medal.

The concept of Modular Kaizen uses both an evolutionary and revolutionary approach to innovation to meet the needs of the complex organization.

Dr. Luis Rabelo

Associate Professor, University of Central Florida

Bio

LUIS RABELO, Ph.D. and Fulbright scholar, served as the NASA EPSCoR Project Manager from 2009-2011. Dr. Rabelo is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems at the University of Central Florida. He holds dual degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the Technological University of Panama and Master’s degrees from the Florida Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering, the University of Missouri-Rolla in Engineering Management, and a Joint Master’s degree in Systems Engineering & Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his Ph.D. in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he also did Post-Doctoral work in Nuclear Engineering.

Dr. Rabelo has authored over 300 publications/research reports and 3 US patents in Aerospace/Artificial Intelligence. He has received the Society of Automotive Engineers, Arch T. Colwell Merit Award, the Forest R. McFarland Award, and the SAE Russell S. Springer Award. He has been the advisor of 40 Doctoral and 45 MS students. In addition, Dr. Rabelo has received the ONE NASA award, a Fulbright scholarship, 2 NASA Group Achievement Awards, the 2008 Technological University of Panama (UTP) Distinguished Alumni Award (Panama), the 2011 23rd Annual Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC) Education Award Winner in STEM, and the 2012 National Engineering Educator of the year award presented by the Engineer’s Council.

Topic Title: Leadership in Technological Environments – What we have been learning!

Abstract

There are four Challenges in technological leadership: being a leader, classification of leadership, selecting our leaders, and creating leaders. This presentation will discuss our research and learning about these challenges. This learning has included several experiments and the utilization of tools from Quality Function Deployment (QFD).

Russ DeLoach

Director, Safety & Mission Assurance, NASA Kennedy Space Center

Bio

William Russ DeLoach is the Director of Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) for NASA at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. In this position, Mr. DeLoach is responsible for the planning and execution of Center and program S&MA activities at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), including the interface function with the S&MA Offices of NASA Headquarters, other Centers, other Government agencies, international governments, and private industry. He ensures NASA Programs at KSC, including Ground Systems Development and Operations, Commercial Crew, Launch Services, Orion, and the International Space Station, are provided with S&MA expertise making sure those programs are safe and successful, as well as to ensure the KSC institution and people that live and work at KSC are safe.

DeLoach began his NASA career in 1987 as an intern in the Army Materiel Command’s Quality & Reliability Engineering training program. He continued his career as a system engineer conducting reliability and system safety analyses and technical review, assessments of integrated ground systems, equipment and operations supporting the Space Shuttle Program and Space Station Programs. In 2000, he was selected as the S&MA Branch Chief within the Shuttle Processing Directorate providing surveillance of Space Shuttle ground operations. As his career progressed, he served as Shuttle Processing Mission Assurance Manager supporting ground processing, launch, and landing; and then moved into new & emerging program development efforts as NASA completed the Shuttle Program. In 2012 he became the Deputy Director of Safety and Mission Assurance, and the Director in 2014.

Bio

Stephanie Thompson is an Arizona native and Arizona State University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management and a Master’s Degree in Technology Management. She is a Certified Six Sigma Green belt and Certified Quality Auditor (CQA).

Stephanie is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and is an advocate for sharing quality with the next generation. As an active member in ASQ, she started as a student member, became the Secretary for the Human Development and Leadership division (2 years), started the Quality Devils which is a student branch of ASQ @ ASU, and has active involvement in several committees including Young Quality Professionals. She is currently the Vice Chair of Students with the Quality Management Division where her focus is on enhancing the value for student members by offering scholarships, publishing opportunities, conference registration, travel support, and support of student branches across the globe.

After serving as a Quality Manager for CampCorp Structures, manufacturing large-scale modular structures, she currently works as an operational excellence specialist and consultant.

Topic Title: Quality as a Way of Life - Using Strategic Planning for Personal Development

Abstract

This presentation will demonstrate how the utilization of strategic planning and quality tools are applicable to our personal and professional lives alike. Tying in DMAIC, PDCA, SWOT analysis, and SMART goals, students are guided through a personal planning & development exercise to understand the strategic planning process, concepts, tools, and how they translate into the boardroom.
