ItwasahighlysuccessfulweekforOverthe Hill Farm at this year's USEF PonyFinals in Lexington, KY. Over the HillFarm, led byBill Schaub of Sanford, FL,brought 25 ponies to compete at thenational championship and had 13poniesinthesaleauction.Their biggest win came from Halo, anine‐year‐old Warmblood pony ownedbyAshleyKennedyWhitner and riddenby Porter Allen of Boerne, Texas. Halo,who was also last year's Grand PonyHunter Champion at the CapitalChallenge Horse Show, 9inished as thechampion of the Medium Pony HunterdivisionatPonyFinals.HaloandAllenwerefourthintheoverallstandings after a solid model class andunder saddle before the all‐importantoverfencesclass.Intheoverfencesclass,they received amazing scores of 90, 89,and87towintheclassforthechampion‐shipinthedivisionthathad133competi‐tors. Their high overall score alsogarneredthemtheGrandReserveCham‐pionship out of all the pony hunterdivisionsatthisyear'sFinals."Ifeelveryluckytogettoridehim,"saidAllen. Schaub added, "We were veryexcited about Halo's big win this week.Porterrodehimbeautifullyandshowedoffthepony'simmensetalent."

AlsoshowingintheMediumPonyHunterdivision was Grand All Over, owned byBurlingame LLC and ridden by TaraSpencer.They9inished10thoverallinthehuge division. Sham's Huckleberry,ridden by ParkerWright and owned bySamanthaKasowitz,was14thoverall.

The 16th overall Medium Pony HunterwasOutoftheBlue,riddenandownedbyAnnaRossi.

Blondie, ridden and owned by AnnaDemetree, was 24th overall in theMedium Ponies. Demetree competed inthe USEF Pony Medal Finals on AnneGardner's Best Kept Secret. Out of 219riders,shewascalledbackin12thplace."TheMediumPonyHunterdivisionwasgigantic,"saidSchaub."Iwasmostproudthat all 9ive ofmy rider/pony combina‐tionsscoredinthemid80sandaboveintheiroverfencesclass.Thatputall9iveinthetop24overall."IntheSmallGreenPonyHunterdivision,Schaub's Sir Dragon and ParkerWright9inished fourth over fences and fourthoverall in the division. Sir Dragon wonthe High Score Green Pony Award forPonySalesGraduates.In the samedivision,ToldYaSo, riddenby Carli Counter and owned by Sugar‐brookFarms,9inished23rdoverall.Over the Hill Farm had very strongcontenders in the Large Pony Hunterdivision, which had 112 competitors.SunlightwasriddenbyShawnCasadyforAlexParadyszand 9inished thirdoverallin the division. Midnight Hour, riddenand owned by Porter Allen, was fourthoverall andwon the reserve champion‐ship for Half‐Welsh Ponies. MidnightHourwasalsonamedtheOverallGrandChampion Sale Graduate of the PonyFinals.

Brooke Price, won the under saddlephase of the Large Pony Hunters withhigh scoresof90,90, and89.MicheallaGerlacher rode Marcy Betts' Who's theManto26thplaceoverallinthedivision.

TheLargeGreenPonydivisionsawSurf'sUp,ownedbyDaraSchaeferandriddenby Kaitlan Parker, 9inish 24th overall.Parker was awarded with the EmersonBurr Horsemanship Award for her agegroup.The Medium Green Pony division hadtwoponiesfromOvertheHillFarm.HopeI'm It, ridden by Anna Rossi,was ninthoverall,whileJackpot,riddenandownedbyBrookePrice,9inished23rdoverall.Schaub was thrilled with the results atthisyear'sPonyFinalsandwithhowwellall of his students rode. "The successcould not have happened without myassistant,MollySewellSchot,trainingallof the kids and managing the showoperation. Melissa VanderVennettmanaged the sale operation and theoperationsathome.Ihaveagreatstaffaswellasof9icemanager,CandySewell."

The sale at Pony Finals was a greatsuccess for Schaub. He brought 13 topponiestosellandsold11ofthem.Hehashad an amazing history of achievementfrom his ponies at the sale, includingSparklePlenty,whohesoldasa three‐year old and who was the 2008 USEFPonyFinalsGrandGreenPonyChampion.Last year'sUSEF Small Pony Champion,FancyFeet,wassoldbySchaubin2007.

Foreachofus,lifehasapattern,whichisfortunate, for otherwise life would beprettyconfusing.Deepwithinuswehavetheneedtoknowofafewthingswecandepend on. Change and the unexpectedaregoodtoo.Theyfurnishthesavor,thesalt, and the spice of life. But it is onlybecauseofthefamiliarpattern,thethingsthatwecancountuponeveryday,thatthesudden changes and the unexpectedhappeningsarepleasant.Wecouldseenomeaninginlifewithoutapattern.Wecandependonthesuntosetandthemoontorise. We know that cool breezes willfollowwavesofheat,andthateachseasonof the year will come in proper turn.These are the things that give us con9i‐dence.Theyarethefoundationsoffaith.

Forme,mypatterninlifehasbeenquitecyclicalthusfar:attendschool(whennotat a horse show), do homework (onlyafter sunset and idling on Facebook forhours), sleep (when caffeine is notpresent),eat(whenIhavetime),drivetoOrlando to ridemy horses (rarely did I9ind time), and 9inally, travel to horse‐shows(ironicallywhennotservingSatur‐dayschools formissingschool tohorse‐show).Itappearsasthoughthebackboneof my life was school and horses, andconsequently a Domino Effect wascreatedwhenonestartedtodisintegrate.So,naturally,ridinghasbeenoneofthosethings I could depend on, it gave life amuch needed sense of structure andstability.But,asIchangeandventureintothe next part in my life, I leave behindsomething extraordinarily signi9icant,whathasmoldedmeintothepersonIamtoday and perhapswhat de9inesme forwho I am best – horses. Earlier Imentioned how change and the unex‐pected are good, but I can’t help butwonderifthischangeisforthebetter.Although I never traveled to Indoors,competedinanyofthe9inals,orshowedintheJuniorJumpers,IlookbackonmyjuniorridingcareerandseeawhirlwindoftimesforwhichIcan’thelpbutsmileat.

These times taught me more than anylessoninAPPhysicscouldeverteachme.Comingallthewayfromwhenmytrainersarcastically suggested jumping off of alargebridgebasedonmytripintheUSETtoconsistentlyribboningatWEFwithmyjumper givesmemore satisfaction thanany‘A’inCalculusevercould.So,asmyjuniorridingcareercomestoanend,Ireminisceuponthesememories,thelifelong friends, and the abundance ofknowledge I have acquired frommy timespentaroundhorses.Atthesametime,asIlookback,eversogratefulfortheadvice,encouragement and support I receivedfrommytrainers,Ican’thelpbutwonderiftheywillcontinuetoholdaspecialplaceinmy life as I travel across the country toattend school. Orwill ourmemories andfriendships fade and change, just as fallchanges into winter? The latter I hopeprovesitselftobefalse.AsIprepareforoneofthegreatestchangesinmylife,college,IpackmybelongingsandleavebehindmypatterninlifeandwhatIhavegrowntodependon,Ibegintoclosethechapterofmyjuniorridingcareer.Yet,Ihave to askmyself the dreaded question:amInot justclosingthechapterof juniorriding, but of riding all together? Or onedaywillIbeabletoopenthechapterandbeginmyamateurridingcareer?Tupac Shakur once rapped about seeingchangeinhis1995songentitled“Changes”,hesaid “I seenochanges,wakeup in themorningandIaskmyselfislifeworthlivingshould I blast myself… And although itseemsheavensent,weain'treadytoseeablack President”. Fourteen years afterShakurrappedaboutseeinga“blackpresi‐dent”, Barack Obama became the 9irstAfrican‐AmericantowintheWhiteHouseusingtheslogan“thechangeweneed”.Regardlessof the typeof change theyaretalking about, change is imminent.Although I am not sure what the futureholdsforme,ormyriding,whatIamsureaboutisthateveryoneneedschange.Iliketothinkoftheupcomingchangesinmylifenot as a hindrance, but more of as anopportunitytogrow,tobeexploratory,to

stepout ofmy comfort zone and attemptbreak barriers I did not embark upon inHighSchool.We have to welcome change with openarms insteadofgoing intosituationswithpreconceivednotions.ToquoteSteveJobs,AppleCEO,"Here'stothecrazyones…Theoneswhoseethingsdifferently.They'renotfondofrules,andtheyhavenorespectforthe status quo. You can quote them,disagreewiththem,glorifyandvilifythem.Abouttheonlythingyoucan'tdoisignorethem because they change things. Theypushthehumanraceforward”.For,withoutchange, what would life be but a staticpatternofimprisonmentfromroutine?

This isa cute largepony,excellentexpression.Theridercouldlengthenherstirrupsahole,andbydoingthatshemightbeabletoholdherpositionbetter,bythat Imeannotshootherseatsofarback.Shehasgreateyecontrol,andsheandherponyareverywellturnedout.

Thisisaverytypyhorse.Itisabeautifuljumper,withagreatexpression.Bothhorseandriderareturnedouttothetens.HerlowerlegisslippingslightlybackbutI'mprettysureit'sfromhispowerfuljump.FromthephotoI'msuretheywinplenty.

Thispictureisinmyopiniontakenalittlelate,he'sonthedecent, sohehasalready started tounfoldhis frontendwhichmakeshim looka littledrapeywithhis frontend.Theriderhasagoodposition,Iwouldlikeseeherstirrupsatleastoneholelonger.Iloveherreleaseandthathereyesareuplookingforthenextjump.

This horse has a great expression, he'swearing his earswell&lookslikehe'senjoyinghisjob.Theriderislookingofftotherightside,sheshouldbelookingrightbetweenhisears.TheonlyotherthingInoticedistheyarenotinthemiddleofthejump.Overallaverynicepicture.

TheNAYRCisthepremierequestrianeventforjuniorridersinNorthAmerica.Itiscomposedofshowjumping,dressage,eventing,reiningandvaulting. IcompetedthisyearinKYintheshowjumpingsectionontheYoungRiderteamforZONE4.Wejumpedacourseofapproximately1.50minheightwithspreadsupto1.65mand15ft. openwater everyday for 4 days.One of the quali9ications formaking yourzone’steamisbasedoffofprizemoneywoninclassesjumping1.45morhigher.TheUnitedStatesisdividedinto12zoneswithZONE4consistingofsixstates:Alabama,Florida,Georgia,Mississippi,SouthCarolina,andTennessee.Ihadalatestartoncollectingmoneyformyplaceontheteam.MyhorseandIwerestillgettingtoknoweachothersowestartedoutinthemediumjuniorjumpers.Asthecircuitprogressedwemovedtothehighsandthentotheopenjumperclasses.We9inallystartedtopeakinMay.WehadmovedintotheGrandPrix’sandturnedinseveralclearrounds.TobeeligibletocompeteinNAYRC,youmusthaveacerti9icateofcapability.Toachieveyourcerti9icate,youmustcompleteacourseat1.45morhigherwith4faultsorlessintheclass.AchievingtheclearroundsattheGrandPrixlevelenabledmetoobtainmycerti9icate.

ShowingunderFEIrulesismuchdifferentthenUSEFrules.InFEI,yourhorsecanNOTshowonmedicationnorcantheyhaveanytracesofmedicationintheirsystem.Also,FEIwasallowedtodrugtestridersatanytime.This isaverycontroversialtopicbecauseinthepast,peoplethatwereonheartmedicationwereconsideredtobeon“steroids”inthesportsworld,whichwouldleadtoapositivedrugtest.Forthosecompetingonteams,thewholeteamisaffected.IfyourteamwastowinGoldMedalandyoutestedpositive,yourteamwouldbeforcedtoforfeittheirmedal.

Theweekwasverystrenuous.Wehadteammeetingseveryday,alongwithridingourhorses,attendingthemandatorymeetingsandmakingsureourhorseswereintopconditioneverytimetheyleftthestall.Everycompetitorwhochosetoshowhadtoattendthesoundnessjog.Youbeganbywalkinguptoasetof9lowersandhandingtheFEIVeterinarianyourhorse’spassport.They’dwalkaroundyourhorsecheckingthatitsmarkingsmatchedthoseinthepassport,theninstructyoutojogtoanotherset of 9lowers at the other end of the pathway. You’d then jog your horse back,stoppingatthesetof9lowersonceagain.Thevetwouldthentellyouifyourhorsepassedthejogorifyouhadtore‐jogthenextmorning.Thisiswherethemedicationrulecanmakeadifference.Mosthorsescompetingatthatlevelareolderandmoreseasoned.Theyareusedtoshowingonalittlemedicationtostaysoundandbecausetheyweren’tonanymedicationprevioustothejog,somewerealittlesore.Problemis,ifyourhorsedoesn’tpassthejog,youdon’tgettoshow.

Itwasmy1styearcompetingonateam.Youhavetothinkofthewholeteaminthedecisionsyoumake, rather thanyourself as an individual.Also,watching the topridersfromallacrossNorthAmericaforcesyoutoraiseyourlevelofridingifyouwanttobesuccessful.Tobeatatoplevelofridingconsistently,youhavetocompeteagainstthemconsistently.EventhoughIdidn’twalkawaywithamedal,itwasagreatlearningexperience.IwasabletojumpsomeofthebiggestcoursesI’veeverjumpedandrideVERYtechnical, butbeautifullydesignedcoursesfromOlafPetersenJr.Iwillde9initelybereturningnextyearwithamedalinmysights.

Thehaystalloriginatedasaplacetostorehay.....seemsobvious.However,therearethosethathaveutilizedthehayroomforothercreativepurposes,whichbringsustothebirthofCentralFloridaEquestrian’snewgossipcolumn,appropriatelynamed‘TheHayStall’.Fearnot,MissPitchforkisheretokeepyouinformedofallinterest‐inglypertinentinformationfromaroundthe Central Florida area. Iknow the technical answer to thisques‐tionbutI’mnotsureyoudo.Thebestwassaved for last and Miss Pitchfork posesthe question: "Is it appropriate for aprofessional to ride in bikini tops andpost nude photos of oneself hidingbehind treeson the internet?"MsPitch‐fork thinks not, let’s keep some class inthesport.Onalighterandmorepositivenote,there’sbeentalkaboutanOrlandoareatrainerthinkingofmovin’intosomebigger ‘digs and while we’re on thesubject of moving, congratulations to asuccessful young upcoming GP rider,trainerandrealitystarwhohasexpandedthe family business to points north forsummer‐fall season. Other congratula‐tionsandbestwishestoalocalGPriderwhoisengagedtohislong‐timegirlfriendand9inalcongratulationstoalocaltrainerwho decided to call the exterminatorafter realizing there were pests in theOrlando area. I can think of several retail horse careproductsthatIlove,butinthepursuitofsavingafewbucksor(moreimportantlyinmyopinion)seekingalternativestothepotentiallyharmfuladditivesandchemi‐cals often found in many of the retailproducts, I have experimented withvarious ingredients and recipes recom‐mendedbyotherswho’vehadsuccessintheir ongoing battles with issues likethrush, scratches, itchy skin and bitinginsects.SoIaskedseveralpeopletosharesomeoftheconcoctionsthey’veusedforthismonthsOpinion column. Read andenjoy,shareyouropinionsonthewebsiteand use common sense when decidingwhatyoumighttry. Forexample, Ireadseveral posts on an online forum thatmentioned using Listerine as a braceinstead of spending money on liniment(somewhat appealing I think). It’s alsoused to kill fungus (scratches, rain rot)which also seems logical. Thepart thatdisturbsmeinvolvesapplyingtheLister‐inetofreshlyscrapedopensores.OUCH!!Another poster was surprised to learnthat therewere applications for alcoholbesides “applying to openwounds”….HELLO??! If youaren’t smartenough to 9igure out the problem withthat statement then please stay awayfrom anyone or any living thing thatmight require medical attention‐ betteryet, next time you cut yourself shaving,pouronabitofalcoholandreportbacktous.I’ll startwith a fewapplicationsusing aproduct that I regularly use at home:organicapplecidervinegar(ACV).IfyouGoogle this product you’ll 9ind multipleusesandcuresforcountlesshealthissuesinhumansandanimals. Polocrosse, Quiz and Tetrathalon.Mem‐bers compete as teams, and are judgednotonlyontheirridingabilities,butalsotheirhorsemanagementskills.The club has been holding weeklymounted meetings at District Commis‐sioner's Lori Tankel's Calypso Farm.Members receive either free instructionfrom our upper level members, or areabletoenjoydiscountedinstructionfromsuch local trainers as Peter Stoepker,JennyJarnstrom,JohnBrownandMaronFoster.Theyarealsoabletoparticipateinclinics offered throughout the region,withsuchtopinstructorsasKyleCarter,andSarahandEricDierks.

Inadditiontoparticipatingatrallies,ourmembers are getting ready for theirratings, which test their horsemanshipknowledge and their riding skills.Currently we have members who areunrated and are ready to earn their D1andD2ratings,toseveralmemberswhoarereadyfortheirC3ratings.Thereare11levelsoftheStandardsofPro9iciency.Famous pony club A graduates include:RobertDover,PhillipDutton,GinaMilesandKarenO'Connor.OthernotableponyclubgraduatesincludeMichaelMatz(B),BruceDavidson(C),DavidO'Connor(B),KimSeverson (B), LendonGray (B) andBarbaro'sveterinarian,DeanRichardson(A).

Championships is held every summer,twoyearsinarowattheVirginiaHorseCenter, and the 3rd year being held inconjuction with the Festival at theKentuckyHorsePark.Festival isa3daycelebrationoftheUSPCwithclinics,bothmountedandunmounted, seminarsandmore. The next festival will be held in2011. Championships and Festival is awonderful family experience! Anyonecanparticipate in theunmounted semi‐narsandclinicsatFestival.Mydaughtershave attended 3 Championships and 2Festivals in the past 9 years. When mydaughtersandIlastattendedFestivalin2004,we stayed at the KentuckyHorsePark campgrounds for nearly 2 weeks,experiencingChamps,festivalandalltheglorious offerings of the Horse Park! Itwas an unforgettable experience! Morethan 1000 pony clubbers from aroundthe world descend upon the KentuckyHorseParkanditisachargedatmo‐sphereofoutgoingfriendliness,camara‐derieandcompetition.GoingtoChampi‐onshipsinLexington,Virginiaisequally

Horsekillings/mutilationsareontheriseinMiami‐Dade(andBroward)counties.Thisisanon‐goingproblemthathasspikedinrecentmonths.Authoritiesareinvestigatingover a dozen horse killings that have been reported since June 2009 inwhich theanimalsappeartohavebeenbutcheredfortheirmeat. It isbelievedthatthehorsemeatisbeingsoldontheblackmarketfor$20/lb.andhigher.BuyingorsellinghorsemeatisillegalinSouthFlorida. Theillegallybutcheredanimalsweregivensteroids,tranquilizers,andantibioticsonaregularbasissotheirmeatistoxictopeople.

Adding a small amount of alcohol to bathwater ormixedwithwaterinaspraybottlecanhelptocoolandmakewaterevaporatemorequickly.

Isitnecessarytofeedelectrolytesupplements?Depends who you ask but here’s a thought: The average horse probably gets anadequate supply of balanced vitamins andminerals (electrolytes included) throughgoodforageanda“commerciallyformulated”feedbutifyou’reluckyenoughtohavean“easy keeper” that requires 5‐6 lbs/day and the recommended amount is 10, yourhorse couldbe comingup short in thedaily requirementof vitaminsandminerals.Anotherpointtoconsideristhatweliveinahot&humidclimatethatcanproduceahot, sweaty horse even before you can 9inish tacking up for exercise. Horses loseelectrolyteswhen theysweatandwateralonedoesn’tcompensateorreplenish lostelectrolytes,soyoumightconsideranelectrolytesupplementwhenthesituationcallsforit.Youmightevenconsiderfeedingadailysupplementduringthehottestmonthsof theyear,especially forhorses in training(40‐90minutes thatproducessweatingalongneck,chestand/orsides).Remember,electrolytesdohelpcreatethirstbutthat’snotthesolepurpose.It’simportanttokeeptheelectrolytebalanceintact,andthatcanmean supplementing. There are multiple inexpensive options available includingsimplefree‐choicemineralizedsaltblockstofeed/wateradditivesandoralpastes.
