Some of us may be wondering how the summer went by so quickly. We may be noticing the days getting shorter, and the signs of fall. Isn’t it wonderful that we live in an area of the world where we get to experience the changing of the seasons? Some may feel a longing for cooler weather, while others reluctantly say good bye to the summer sun. But isn’t it wonderful, that we can look forward to another summer, another spring, another fall…and maybe, yes, another winter. Ecclesiastes teaches us that there is a time for every season. The season we are in here at Heidelberg is one of new growth in our Christian walk as Rally Day kicked off our Sunday School. We have a wonderful line up of teachers and a wonderful new curriculum for our children. By now, you probably know that the adults are learning about Science & The Bible. We can thank Jerry Yarbrough for a challenging Road Rally. Our confirmation class will be held Thursday evenings and I am looking forward to our time together. Finance is busy with budgets, Membership is busy with outreach to our community, and Stewardship is on board for Campaign 2016 based on Luke 10:37. Compassionate Care is taking care of shut-ins and homebound members and Choir has resumed with beautiful anthems. Property always has a repair in mind and Consistory is as diligent in serving our members and friends as ever. Ashley has taken on a new role as our Webmaster and our website is getting a facelift! We received the grant we applied for from the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the UCC for outreach to the community in the amount of $4,462.00. This money will be spent to offer seminars on topics such as Boundaries, Anger Management, and topics our community is interested in discussing. We produced our first radio commercial and it is airing on WNPV 1440, Lansdale. Brent Gerges did an outstanding job on the voiceover and the Choir sang a “tag line” jingle. Jerry Yarbrough and Fred made the arrangements with the radio station and our members are already hearing it on the air. There is a lot going on, so I will leave it up to the committees to fill in the details. As I mentioned in the last edition of the Challenger, I will continue with our ecumenical history with respect to our worship in the United Church of Christ. I hope this section of our newsletter is giving you a little better understanding of why we do what we do. (Continued on next page)

“Ecumenism is the vocation of separated Christians tocelebrate their unity in Jesus Christ and to make thatunity more visible as the Holy Spirit guides thechurch into all truth. It is a vocation as old as thechurch itself. Within the New Testament, Christiansof differing points of view struggled to live in harmonyin the one Body of Christ. The Council of Jerusalemis evidence enough that Jewish Christians and GentileChristians labored patiently to affirm diversity that didnot compromise the identity and unity of the churchas one people of God.

Current understanding of the worship of the NewTestament church is assisted by insights madeavailable from the literature of the church of the firstfour centuries. The discovery in modern times ofmuch of this literature, particularly the Didache, theApostolic Tradition of Hippolytus, and the journal ofEgeria, provides texts more ancient than thoseavailable to the Protestant reformers of the sixteenthcentury. This informative literature, when studied inrelation to the New Testament, leads to fullerappreciation of the trials and treasures of Christianworship in the formative centuries of the church,better understanding of the liturgical development ofthe medieval period, and the discernment of thebroad shape that gives Christian worship its enduringidentity.” (UCC Book of Worship)

There is more to come on Ecumenism in the nextissue of the Challenger because it is the foundationof the four denominations coming together whichform the United Church of Christ (Reformed,Evangelical, Congregational, and Christian).Whenever we worship, however we worship, withwhomever we worship, our ultimate goal is to giveGlory to God.May your walk with the Lord be strengthened inyour worship and your service, your prayer time,and your study of the Word.In Christ,

NGA ~ Needlework Guild of America- Sue Camuso

There was a time when women often sewedmany of the garments that their family wore.This was true back in 1882, when theNeedlework Guild was formed in England.From the NGA ~ Needlework Guild ofAmerica website:

The Needlework Guild began in England in 1882 following a miningdisaster in nearby Wales. Lady Diana Wolverton gathered a group ofpeople together to make clothing (one to wear, one to wash) for thechildren whose parents had died in the disaster. She “glimpsed thefact that old garments might pauperize, but new garments equalize.”Queen Mary’s Clothing Guild is still active and assisting thousands ofpeople in need each year. Recently, the Guild proudly launched anew website. To learn more about our friends, the inspiring workthat they do and their amazing history, visit www.qmcg.org.uk.In 1885, Mrs. Harpence from Philadelphia was impressed with thework that was being done. She shared the concept with her niece,Laura Safford, who in turn told 6 of her friends. They agreed to helpher sew for the needy. The first year, they collected 921 articleswhich were donated to hospitals and orphanages. The NeedleworkGuild of America was founded in Philadelphia in 1885 and laterincorporated in Pennsylvania in 1896.Since that time, NGA has helped many needy neighbors. We havealso helped those in need during the Spanish-American War, the 1906San Francisco Earthquake, World War I and II, Hurricane Andrew,Hurricane Floyd, and Hurricane Katrina.Today our organization is affiliated with over 170 non-profit charitiesacross the United States and distributes over 240,000 items eachyear! NGA has 33 Branches in ten different states, as well as NationalHeadquarters located in Warminster, Pennsylvania. In July of 2011,our official name was changed to NGA ~ Needlework Guild ofAmerica.

Heidelberg will again be hosting the annual ingathering for the HatfieldBranch of NGA on October 25th and 26th. What is the annual ingathering?That’s when all the members (and friends) of the branch contribute twonew items, such as sheets, towels, or a variety of clothing items, andbring all of the donations together for sorting and packing for thecommunity organizations who distribute them to those in need.Continuing the tradition of the original Needlework Guild, two items arerequested – but they no longer need to be handmade! Or if you’re toobusy or unable to shop for the items, a monetary gift that allows one ofthe directors to make a purchase on your behalf are happily accepted aswell. If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, see DorisGerges or Rose Kriebel for more information.

By Request- Ed Kachinsky

[Ed. Note: On August 21st, Ed shared a testimony. Itwas requested that we include it in the next issue of TheChallenger, so here it is. Thank you, Ed, for sharing thiswith us again.]

About three years ago, Jan and I gave testimonyrelating how God had directed our lives as we wereconsidering my having a cardiac procedure done atDoylestown Hospital. We related how, through anumber of seemingly unrelated events, God had toldus to proceed, and that He would see me through it.I am going to speak more about this later.Just recently, Jan had spinal surgery at AbingtonHospital and I, mindful of how God had spoken to usbefore, sensed that He was again communicatingwith us, not so much as to tell us to proceed with thesurgery, but more to tell us that He was in control.After breaking her right wrist in early March, Jan hadsuffered through months of sciatica pain which, atthe end of May, included a stretch of eight daysduring which she could not even get out of bed. And,though neither one of us wanted to see her gothrough spine surgery, we elected to do just that,fearful of the possibility of recurrences if we did not.We met the surgeon, Dr. Guy Lee of the RothmanGroup and were told that we had a choice betweenDoylestown Hospital or Abington Main Hospital. Werequested Doylestown because it is much closer andwe are familiar with the layout there.Then we were told that she would have to wait untilmid-July for an opening at Doylestown but thatAbington was available in mid-June. Not wanting towait so long, we chose Abington.The surgery was scheduled for June 15 and wassupposed to be a one-day procedure. On the day ofthe surgery, we arrived at 5:30 A.M., and at 7:00, Janwas rolled into the OR.At 8:15, in answer to my prayers, Dr. Lee came out totell me that everything had gone well and that Janwould be in Recovery shortly, at which time I wouldbe able to see her.“Shortly” came to be about 6 hours, and I still had notbeen told that I could see her. I finally was able tospeak to someone in the Recovery Room who toldme that although Jan came through the operation in

good shape, her lung function and oxygen level weretoo low and they wanted to wait a while longer to seeif the numbers would improve as they did not wantto release her in that condition.Finally at 3:30, they decided that she should stay inthe hospital overnight and hopefully in the morning,things would be back to normal levels. So, Jan and Ispent the night in her room. The hospital provided avery uncomfortable cot for me, but it was better thana chair!During the evening, she was tested for lung functionand oxygen level which stayed below acceptablelimits. I spent most of the night asking God to restoreher so that she would be OK and able to go home onThursday.On Thursday, some other problems developed but,thanks be to God, her lung function and oxygen levelreturned to normal. However, it still did notnecessarily mean that we would be going home thatday. Finally, the other problems were cleared upwith a lot of medical assistance from a couple ofwonderful nurses and from God, and we were told tostart getting ready to leave.However, just before we were released, the nursethat we knew God had sent to care for Jan, said shewanted to check the dressing on Jan’s incision andshow me how to change and apply a new dressing.There was some signs of bleeding and we were surethat God had directed the nurse to continue to delayour departure for some reason.While we were waiting for the nurse’s instructions, avolunteer came into the room with a pamphletprepared by the hospital’s Pastoral Care Department.I took a few minutes to scan it and noted that therewere a few prayers inside. They were the 23rd Psalm(my favorite), the Serenity Prayer (which PastorMarianne read in church several weeks ago), andthree others, one of which was titled, “In Thanks,”and is attributed to Rebbe Nachman, a Hassidicteacher, who died in the early 19th century in thetown of Breslov.When I read this prayer, my eyes filled with tears as itwas so relevant to the situation that Jan and I hadjust gone through. In addition, this came at a timewhen Consistory was deep in discussion regarding theformation of Prayer Groups that would , asappropriate, pray with or for members of the

Congregation in need. I came to believe that Godwas the reason our departure from the hospital wasdelayed. I believe that HE wanted me to read thisprayer.I thought about this “awakening” in me and began toconsider how I could impart this feeling to you. As Ithought about it, an idea came into my mind thatcodified much of this thought into a rather simplisticmodel. It is “Connect the Dots.”You all remember those connect the dots puzzles youplayed as a child where there was a piece of paper onwhich was drawn a sort of an outline of an objectthat a child would easily recognize such as a boat oran elephant, and several numbers starting with“one.” Once you drew a line through all thenumbers, in numerical order, the entire picture wasmade clear to you.As my idea expanded, I began to realize that our livesare really a huge “Connect the Dots” puzzle withseveral rather important differences. Our life pictureis made up of many, many “Dots,” the location,arrangement and order of which is unknown…….. TOUS.The first dot is our conception, the Supreme Courtand U.S. Congress notwithstanding. And, of course,the last is our death. WE, naturally, have nothing todo with the placement of these dots and are notactually aware of reaching them, but will in God’sown time. And, as Christians, we believe that Godwill place at least one additional dot after our earthlylife is over.The other dots may be placed on our life picture byus or by GOD. The important thing to realiize is thatwe don’t know where all the dots are, or how to gofrom one to another. Since GOD has given us FREEWILL, the path that we take from one dot to anotheris totally random. And, while we may never reachany of the dots we consider important, we mostassuredly will reach all of GOD’S, through prayer, inour own way.The most important difference between our lifepuzzle and the one you completed as a child, is thatonly GOD will see the finished picture our lives havecreated.Having said all of this, I wish to return to thebeginning of this testimony where I mentioned howJan and I had received so many “Signs” from God

telling us to proceed with the cardiac procedure. Atthat time, I had been free of Atrial-Fibulation forabout 3 months. About 9 months after that, as someof you know, the A-Fib returned and I am now in it24/7 and have been for about a year.At first, I had to wonder, “Why had God sent us allthose signs if the procedure was only going to last ayear?” Of course, I had no answer. Prayer did notresult in an answer either. I had another ablationdone at that time which only lasted a few months.After giving much thought to this and asking God foran answer, I CAME to the conclusion that God usedthe signs he had sent us as a way of telling us toconsider the happenings in our lives, and to look forHIS messages during times of great concern andhardship that would surely come. HE was telling ussomething and was answering our prayers in HIS way,not ours.I must say that I’ve noticed one benefit of being in A-Fib all the time. That is, that except for experiencinga shortness of breath from time to time, I no longerfeel the big difference in my physical condition whengoing into A-Fib. I never would have considered thisa benefit, but it is.To close, I wish to offer, in prayer, Rebbe Nachman’sprayer that generated such a strong emotion in me atthe hospital after Jan’s surgery, and ask you to prayalong with me:My God, it has taken me time,

But I’m finally learning to trust you.When I called, You answered;

When I cried, You sent relief;When I was in need, You came through.

You are there for me in every instance.I need only look, think and understand,

And I can always find You;There You are, always ready to help.

Thank You, God, for waiting for me.Amen.
