Beatles' Visit SetBrian Epstein has now com-

pleted arrangements for theBeatles next visit here, and alsofor their second movie, whichthey start shooting for produc-er Walter Shenson at the endof this month.

The four Liverpool lads willarrive in this country on Aug-ust 15 for a fifteen day stay,which will swing them throughnine projected dates in the U.S.and Canada, a scheduled onenighter in Mexico City, and anEd Sullivan taping.

They will open in New York,probably at Shea Stadium, andplay two dates at the Holly-wood Bowl, on August 29 and30.

It is reported that the Beatlesthemselves have selected thecities in which they will beappearing, and in addition tothose already mentioned, ten-tative places are Atlanta, Geor-gia; San Francisco; Toronto;Minneapolis; Houston; Chicagoand Detroit. On the ten daytour they are expected to earn$1,000.000. against the $1.5 mil-lion they took out from theirlast visit.

Working title of the newBeatles movie, scheduled tostart shooting in Nassau in theBahamas on February 22, is"Beatles Film Number Two."The unit will spend two and ahalf weeks in the Bahamas, andthen fly to the Austrian Alpsfor further sequences. The finalsix weeks shooting will bespent at London's TwickenhamStudios and on location in thecity.

"Beatles Film Number Two"will be premiered in Londonin August with British generaland an American opening tofollow. According to producer,Walter Shenson, the Beatleswill play themselves 'in a fairytale setting.'

Further Beatle plans for 1965include a brief European tourbefore coming to America. Thegroup will play dates in Julyin France, Spain and Italy.

After they return from theU.S., the Beatles are expectedto start work on their thirdmovie, which would excludethe possibility of a Fall Britishtour. They are not now expect-ed to go out on the road in Eng-land until early next year.

Fame Trip OffPlans to bring Georgie Fame,

Britain's hottest new disc prop-erty, to the U. S. in time forMurray the 'K's' Easter Showat the Brooklyn Fox havefailed.

Fame, who is happening herewith his British hit "Yeh Yeh"(on Liberty) is unable to breakplans for a projected Irish tour,but is hoping to make a tripacross later in the year.

However, this week, BrianEpstein confirmed that Gerryand the Pacemakers will maketheir third visit here in April,to appear in Murray's showfrom April 17 thru 25. Whilehere, the group will also ap-pear on the Ed Sullivan Showon April 11.

Cilia Black, the only girlsinger in Epstein's stable willarrive here at the beginning ofApril, and make her AmericanTV debut on the Sullivan Showon April 4.

Another British group, Fred-die and the Dreamers, consist-ently in the English charts, butwithout a hit record here, ar-rive in New York on Monday(8) for a ten day stay, whichwill include a promotional tripto Detroit. If immigration clear-ance can be obtained, the groupwill guest on "Hullabaloo," andtape a "Shindig" spot.

Going to England, whereboth are scoring in the Britishcharts are The Shangri-La'sand Del Shannon, who open athree week tour with Herman'sHermits on February 27. Bothacts are currently representedin the English charts - theShangri La's with "Leader ofthe Pack," and Del Shannonwith "Keep Searchin".

N.Y. Jock ShakeupThe disc jockey's lot is no-

toriously nomadic, but the in-dustry's revolving door policywas working overtime lastweek in New York City. Twoof the town's biggest deejays,Scott Muni and Murray "theK" Kaufman, were out of jobsand some fascinating rumorswere circulating in the tradeabout the departures.

Top -rated jock Muni wasdropped by WABC after fouryears, and Kaufman an-nounced that he would end aseven year tenure at WINS onFebruary 27.

Muni's abrupt departurefrom WABC (Friday, Jan. 29)was shrouded in mystery butreliable sources opined the fir-ing stemmed from a long-standing feud between Muniand WABC program directorRick Sklar. An explosive post -firing scene is said to have tak-en place between the two menlast Tuesday (2).

Officially, WABC said the de-cision not to renew Muni's op-tion was made "because sta-tion management felt WABCcould further strengthen ouralready strong night time po-sition by having one perform-er (Bruce Morrow) throughoutthe evening hours."

Morrow, also a top -ratedjock at WABC, now runs from7:20 to 11 p.m., and Bob Lewisfills the 11 p.m. to midnightspot. Muni formerly occupiedthe 7:20-10 p.m. time slot.

Kaufman's exodus fromWINS was supposedly ar-ranged on a friendlier basis.At any rate it had a surfaceappearance of serenity. WINSissued a gracious press release

about an "amicable settle-ment," and Kaufman said heplanned to devote full time toTV and "other projects," in-cluding a trip with the Beatles.

The most persistent rumor inthe trade about Kaufman isthat "the K" will take overMuni's time slot at WABCwhen he returns to the U.S.in April. The deal supposedlywould include plans Kaufmanhas "to break new ground intelevision."

Another rumor going therounds is that Kaufman willhitch his wagon to Brian Ep-stein and work with him andthe Beatles on a full time basis.

Stan Z. Burns will move intoKaufman's night time periodat WINS, and it is expectedthat the station will eliminatethe rock and accentuate a mid-dle-of-the-road music policy.

Other recent changes on thechaotic New York radio sceneinclude Dick Biondi, whosenetwork disk show was term-inated by the Mutual Broad-casting System January 30;Pete "Mad Daddy" Myers (nowat WNEW) dropped by WINSa few weeks ago; Freddie Rob-bins, who was replaced atWNEW by Myers, and long-time WNEW music program-mer Al Trilling succeeded byGertrude Katzman of WIP,Philadelphia.

Trilling one of most knowl-edgeable of the record librari-ans had been with WNEWsince the great days of MartinBlock and Bernice Judis.

Beatles In NassauWord that the Beatles would

soon be in Nassau (February22) has set off a flurry of ac-tion at the radio station levelin terms of both coverage fromthe British -owned Carribeanisland resort as well as thepossibility of staging listenercontests with prizes includingflights to Nassau to meet theBeatles.

Miami, for example, is only185 air miles from Nassau (a40 minute flight) and it'sknown that the two top popvoices there, WQAM andWFUN, are both trying towork out arrangements fortheir own version of projectBeatles in Nassau.

WFUN exec, Joyce Monroesaid the station's Larry Kane,who was on the Beatles lastAmerican tour, was makingpersonal contact with BrianContinued on page 30

I find that I must agree100% with the entire articlewith the emphasis on the lastline, "Johnny's a real niceguy."

I got to know Johnny whilehe was stationed at Fort Jack-son, serving a stretch for UncleSam. I was working for a Co-lumbia station, WNOK. Per-haps if the other Dee Jay'scould meet and get to knowJohnny as I was able to, hisannual sales would pick up. Hedepends on no gimmicks, hairdo's or fancy clothes to makehim successful. He is JohnnyTillotson, the son of a servicestation operator. I could go onand on because I know that heis what he is, in short, "John-ny's a real nice guy."

Now I realize that the abovesounds as though it wouldcome from his manager orsome other business associate,but it doesn't. Believe me itcomes fromworld's most mis-used, under-paid, mis-treated people inexistance, seldom referred toas a radio announcer."

I have never written a let-ter to the editor before, butafter reading the letter ofJohnny Young in your Janu-ary 23rd edition, I'm slightlypeeved. It's not everyday thatI get peeved about things likethis, but I feel very sincerelythat Mr. Young's letter is veryunfair and unjust to smallmarket radio stations.

I would like to point out afew facts of life to Mr. Young.Granted, Sir, that small townstations aren't the same as a

Letters To The EditorKYW or a WBZ or a WLS,but ask yourself this question.Suppose you are a record com-pany promotion man and yousend a copy of a record thatbecomes a hit to only the big-gest stations in the countryand only they give it the playwhich makes it a hit. Just howmany copies of this record willthe American public buy incomparison with a record thatbecomes a hit that has re-ceived exposure in practicallyevery pop music station in bothlarge and small areas?

Mr. Young, let me point outsomething to you. We don't ex-pect the same treatment asKYW, WBZ, or WLS, but thenthey receive as many as tencopies of the same hit record.We only ask for one of themand we manage to get by withonly one copy. Have you evertried to go out and buy per-haps five hit records everyweek to keep up? It gets a bitexpensive, doesn't it? We don'task the distributors and com-panies to send us albums-weknow we're not big enough towarrant this-we only ask themto send us a copy of the sin-gles that they can spare. Gentlemen,I have just finished reading

this weeks excellent edition ofyour fine mag. And to say theleast I think it is the greatest.I could go on and tell you allof the features I enjoy but Idon't want to take up so muchspace. There is one thing thatdoes disturb me though. Inyour letters to the editor col-umn, there is an article writ-ten by a gentleman who evi-dently does not understand theradio and record promotionbusiness as well as he should.He states that he is sick ofseeing letters from small towndeejays crying for record serv-ice. I believe that he shouldhe enlightened to a few facts.

For instance many of thenew records, in fact a goodlyportion of the new records, arebroken and given a big startin small town markets by theso called small town deejays.Many of the larger stations willnot take a chance on a newrecord like a small station will.In fact very few if any at allof the larger stations will playa record until it has hit thecharts.

This proves my point. Be-fore you go knocking smallstations in small marketsplease sit back and review thefacts. Understand I do notwork for a small station andI do not have trouble withrecord service, I am just stand-ing up for these stations. Takefor instance the letter a fewweeks ago from the managerof a college station saying howthey are overlooked by recordpromoters. Even at a small col-lege station a record can bebroken locally. A record thata big station would not playuntil it reached the top forty.

I have been looking for agood excuse to write to youand I have finally found it. Ienjoy your magazine immense-ly.

Group sound revolution. During the past 10years or so the group sound has under-gone, violent, drastic change. Ten yearsago "bird" groups were the vogue, likethe Penguins, the Orioles, the Ravens, theCrows. etc. A little later the r. & b. groupstook over, like the Clovers, the Coasters,and others of that genre. In the 1960'sthe group sound was a little sweeter, and

smoother, and groups such as the Plat-ters, the Fleetwoods, the Four Freshmen,the Kingston Trio, and the Brothers Fourwere tops.

There is little need to detail the groupsound revolution in 1964. The Englishgroups: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones,the D. C. Five, the Animals, The Kinks,The Hullaballos, et. al., created the wild-

est group scene in the record field in thepast 10 years.Drifters stayed on top. Through this revo-lutionary period, from the bird group tothe English group sound one group, theDrifters, has managed to retain its popu-larity and has come up with a string ofsmash hits on records, every year from1955 to 1965. lion sellers. The Drifters have also re-mained a top act on the one-nighter andconcert circuit, and in clubs during thispast decade as well.

There is no doubt that the sound of theDrifters must have been a pretty goodone for the group to stay on top longafter most of the other groups that startedwhen they did faded away. There arealso a number of other reasons for theDrifter's staying power, which includesthe material they have recorded and thequality of their recordings.Started with Clyde. To diverge for a mo-ment, the Drifters started back in 1953,mainly as a back-up group to an excitingAtlantic Records acquisition, Clyde Mc-Phatter. They made their debut in backof Clyde on his debut waxing for Atlanticcalled "Money Honey" which turned outto be a smash hit. They backed Clydeon many other hits until Clyde went intothe Army.

The Drifters decided to continue ontheir own without Clyde. They came upwith a smash, two-sided hit, "Adorable"and "Steamboat." A few months laterthey followed it up with another two-sided smash "Ruby Bay," and "YourPromise To Be Mine." By the time ClydeMcPhatter received his honorable dis-charge from the Army, the Drifters werea big group on their own and Clyde andthe group never went back together again.Spawned Ben E. King. McPhatter hadreally spawned the Drifters but the Drift-ers spawned another lead singer who also

became a big star as a single. His namewas Ben E. King, who was the lead withthe Drifters during the late 1950's untilhe went out on his own in the early1960's. Rudy Lewis followed King as theDrifters lead singer until he died sudden-ly in the summer of 1964. Since thenJohnny Moore has handled the lead sing-ing role. The other Drifters are JohnnyTerry, Charlie Thomas and Gene Pearson.Guitarist Bill Davis is the accompaniest ofthe group.

To return to the songs that the Driftershave recorded it is interesting to notethat they have always had top materialby hit pop writers of the day. "Save TheLast Dance For Me," was penned by DocPomus and Mort Shuman. "Dance WithMe," was written by S. Libisch and J.Glick. "There Goes My Baby" by BenNelson, L. Patterson and George Tread -well.

Among their most recent hits, "UnderThe Boardwalk" is from the pen of ArtieResnick and Kenny Young. "I've GotSand In My Shoes," was composed bythe same pair and "Saturday Night AtThe Movies," was written by BarryMann and Cynthia Well.Sociological songs. The Drifters materialhas always been aimed at the teen, oryoung adult set, but their material hasoften cut deeper than songs about happyor broken love affairs. At times their ma-terial has bordered on the sociological.These include a group of songs they madehits in the 1960's like "Up On The Roof,"which concerned a young lad who fledto the rooftops anytime he couldn't takethe tensions of life any longer, and "OnBroadway" which told about a lad whopromised himself that someday he wouldbe a star "On Broadway." ("Up On TheRoof" was written by Carol King andGerry Goffin, and "On Broadway" by Cyn-thia Weil, Barry Mann and Jerry Leiberand Mike Stoller.)

The Drifters also had a social commen-tary piece of material way back then thatnever did become a hit. It was called"Mexican Divorce," and was a critical andemotional slap at quickie divorces. (Writ-ers were Burt Bacharach and Bob Hil-liard).Pop and R. & B. The Drifters were one ofthe first r. & b. groups that broke throughto the pop area and yet managed to re-tain their r. & b. following. Even todaythey have managed to continue to hit bothfields simultaneously, and their releasesare always up on the pop and r. & b.charts at the same time.

Over the past 10 years the Driftershave sold, both singles and albums, closeto 15 million records throughout theworld. Their million sellers include "SaveThe Last Dance For Me," and "There GoesMy Baby." "Up On The Roof," sold 900,000and "Under The Boardwalk" matched thatfigure.

The Drifters have been recorded bysome of the top record men of the era.Their first four smashes were recordedby Nesuhi Ertegun. Since then Ahmet Er-tegun, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, andJerry Wexler and Bert Berns, have re-corded their hits. Their fresh record con-cepts and the Drifters' swinging soundand style have helped keep the group ontop in the record world over the years.Ready for top clubs. Drifters have not beenseen as much as they should have beenover the years in some of the top clubs inthe big cities, like the Copa in New York.Their upcoming appearance on the "Shin-dig" TV show may help them make themso familiar, even to the squares, that theywill get the club dates that their manyyears of success should entitle them to.

On the one-nighter trail they are one ofthe biggest names in the business. Theyhave done remarkably well on variousDick Clark Show tours, and they are con-stantly on the road playing one-nighterdates and concert dates in arenas, audi-toriums and on college campuses through-out the country.First European tour. Right now their firstEuropean tour is being set up for themby manager George Treadwell and book-ing agency Shaw Artists. It will take themto England and the Continent starting inMarch, with most of their appearances tobe made in England, both in concert andon TV. They have become very popularthere due to their smash hits during 1964,which happened in England as well asthe U.S.

Currently the Drifters have a new rec-ord taking off called "At The Club." Itcould even turn out to be a two sidedhit, since the flip side "Answer ThePhone," is now starting to get action too.For the first time in their long career onAtlantic, the group has an LP out whichis not made up of previously issued sin-gles releases. It is called "The Good Lifewith the Drifters," and 11 of the 12 newstandard tunes in the tunes were record-ed just for the album. It indicates theDrifters are now such an established actthat they can sing songs they didn't intro-duce on record, and make them soundlike they did. BOB ROLONTZ

Chess Records was founded onr & b. There're still with that scene,but now they have pop and jazzand radio stations as well.

HOUSE OF BLUES. Fifteen blocks of Chicago's South MichiganAvenue-from ten hundred to twenty-five hundred, constitutethe Windy City's indie record row. To r. and b. and more spe-cifically, good solid blues fans around the world, it has an evengreater significance. Number 2120 is the home of one of the primesources of the blues on records-the Chess -Checker -Argo axis.

Leonard Chess, the head man, has been turning out historicblues records from his south side address for nearly 20 years-records with such memorable artists as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley,Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, L'il Walter and L'il Milton. Theseare the names that warm the heart of any blues fan at theirvery mention.

DID IT ALONE. "I used to do it all by myself," Chess recalledlast week, while at the same time noting with satisfaction hisfirm's current success-smack in the middle of the great r. andb. revival-with five singles on the charts. "Yes, I rememberthose days well enough," Chess continued. "My competitors?Well there were quite a few. I can remember Modern, RPM,Exclusive, Specialty, Apollo, Aladdin, Atlantic and Imperial.

"Most of them are gone now. I guess Atlantic is the only oneleft besides me. In the old days I can remember, recording thesides, pressing 'em and dumping a couple thousand in the backof the car and driving over to Detroit and selling them myselfto the record dealers.

OLD SOUNDS GOOD TOO. "Today, they all talk about sound,Detroit, Nashville, Liverpool . . . even the Chess sound. Wellsure, we have a terrific studio here, and I'm glad the RollingStones thought so much of it that they wanted to come here torecord. But really, this stuff about sound with the Germanecho chambers and all the new equipment, forget it.

"I think I was making records just as good as any today whenI had my old little two by four joint. `Maybelline,' was thebest record we ever made and Chuck Berry cut that in the twoby four studio. I think any good engineer can duplicate a soundin 15 minutes. I can tell my boys to give me a Nashville soundlike they get in Bradley's studio and they'll do it.

A BETTER BEAT. "Today you've got good acts and goodmaterial and you've got a better beat. That's what's doing it.And you get hits from all over. Not just one city, and you getwhite and colored hits too. That's helped because today youdon't have to be white to get a white audience and you don'thave to be colored to get a colored audience. Everybody buys

both kinds of records. And everybody is discovering what weknew a long time ago; there's nothing like good r. and b.

Even a Muddy Waters or a Howlin' Wolf could make it todayin the pop field. Why not? The beards in Greenwich Village andin Old Town in Chicago have suddenly discovered guys likeMuddy. They call them folk so they buy them.

CHESS' BEST YEAR. "We had a great year with Chuck lastyear. In fact it was our biggest year. And we're planning toget a lot bigger. Chuck will stay big. I know it. Now he's overin England again touring. He's already cut some sides over thereso we can get another album out soon.

"We're doing very well with our girl artists. We're very ex-cited about Mitty Collier. Jackie Ross is doing good for us too.Jan Bradley has a new hit. Keep watching out for Sugar PieDe Santo. She's going to make it big too one of these days.

ARGO GOES POP. "Argo has had a good bit of jazz in thepast with Ramsey (Lewis) and Ahmad (Jamal) but we're goingto be pointing that label more and more to top 40. Etta Jameshas had her big hits and we're going to try hard to bring herback with good ballads like 'At Last'. And we have Johnny Nashon Argo too. I think the record he has now is his biggest yet.

"The way I see our future is this. We'll never leave r. and b.That's the goose that laid the golden egg for us. It's the foun-dation of everything and you never sell the foundation. But wealso want to overcome the idea that that's all we do. Vic Damonejust signed with Warner Brothers. Before he went with them,we were actively negotiating with him. We'll be going afterartists like that."

STRONG OVERSEAS. Another area of action on the Chesscalendar is the overseas market. Some of the most fanatical fansof Chess -Checker artists are to be found in Great Britain. Truefolk blues for years has been important to the British. Now it'salmost as though the carbon copy r. and b. being spooned outby such acts as the Rolling Stones and the Animals, has awak-ened the British all over again to the appeal of the authenticr. and b.

"We've had our records out in England through Pye," Chesssaid. They'll continue to distribute us but we'll have our ownChess label over there. February 14, my son Marshall is takinga group of our artists to England to promote the records, do aseries of one-nighters and some television. Johnny Nash will begoing and so will Jackie Ross and Buddy Guy. Billy Davis, oneof our producers, is going too. After England, they'll go on toParis and Germany. We've had an 80 percent increase in ourforeign business in the last year and a half and my son Mar-shall's job as the head of the foreign department is to keep itgoing up."

NOW A QUARTERBACK. Leonard Chess was once largely aone-man show. Now he's regarded as the quarterback-the keyman-in what has become a tightly knit team operation. This isbecause he splits his time between the record company, thestudio, the pressing plant, radio station WVON, in Chicago,(which he owns) and a Chicago FM station which he's justbought.

"I'll continue to cut Chuck Berry and a few others," he said"but I have to get involved in the other things. My brother Philhas been in business with me for a long time and he picks upthe reins completely when I'm not around. Then I have DickLaPalm and Max Cooperstein in the sales and administration andpromotion. The Argo LP line, with people like Jamal, RamseyLewis, Illinois Jacquet and Jean DuShon, is being handled byDick, while Max takes care of the singles and the Chess andChecker LP's. Our record producers include Billy Davis, GeneBarge and Esmond Edwards. With Marshall, that's about theteam. Paul Gayton, my first employee, heads our West Coastoperation.

LOVES RADIO BUSINESS. "I love the record business andI'm sure I'll always be in it. Being in radio has been great too.We took over a Negro station a few years ago in Chicagoand think it's brought the level of Negro radio right up to thetop class of any white station. We're rating third and fourth inthe market most of the time and second behind WLS duringsome time segments. We play about 60 records a weekwith maybe 10 new ones and our jockeys like E. Rodney Jonesare doing a terrific job.

"Our FM station started on the air February 1. Right nowit's WHFC but that will change in 30 days. We're using jazz,pop, some r. and b., and a staff of announcers that are likethe whole United Nations." REN GREVATT

Percy Faith prepares to record

another Broadway show score"Do I Hear A Waltz?" is next on the agendafor Percy, who started instrumental albumsof show music with "Kismet" many years ago

show "Do I Hear A Waltz?" Show is based on Arthur Laurents' "The Time Of The Cuckoo" which

later was made into the movie "Summertime."

A traditional visit. Percy Faith wasin New York last month to make what hasnow become a traditional visit. He wentto the rehearsals of the new RichardRodgers -Stephen Sondheim musical "DoI Hear A Waltz?" To visit rehearsals of ashow whose score he is going to recordhas become a tradition with Percy, andhe is going to make an instrumental rec-ord of the music from "Do I Hear AWaltz?" It will be released before theshow opens in New York March 18.

"I've gone to the rehearsals of all ofthe shows I've recorded," said Percy,starting with "Kismet". I've done it with"Little Abner," "House Of Flowers,""Most Happy Fella," "My Fair Lady,""Sound Of Music," and "Camelot."

Getting the mood. "The reason I gois to get the mood and feeling of theshow, and the scenes in the show. WhenI do my instrumental arrangements Itry to make the violins, the brass, thewoodwinds - whichever is carrying themelody - mouth the words. The violins orbrass have to transmit what the lyrics aresaying. If you can capture this on a rec-

ord, then it has a chance for a long life."I try never to destroy the original

intent of the composer or the lyricist, andyet still insert a part of myself in thearrangements. If I've had any successwith my instrumental versions of showscores, it's due to that."

"Another thing I always try to do tomaintain the mood of the show, is toput the songs in the same order as theyare in the show. Then when someone whohas seen the show hears my album he'llfeel every song is in its proper place.Sometimes I use songs that are not fullyutilized in the show. In my record of"My Fair Lady," for example, I used allof the "Embassy Waltz," even though itisn't completely performed in the show,in order to maintain the proper mood."

A big seller. Although Percy Faithhas become the top seller of instrumentalshow LP's over the past decade, he is alsojust as big a seller with all the othertypes of albums he has recorded for Co-lumbia Records. They now total 42 andthey include such favorites as "Bouquet,""Viva," "Music of Brazil," and the Faith -

styled versions of rock and roll tunes like"Themes For Young Lovers," "MoreThemes For Young Lovers," and hisnewest "Latin Themes For Young Lovers."

"Young Lovers" series. How didFaith, a non -rock and roll man, ever getinvolved in recording rock tunes? "Well,after you've recorded 40 or so albumsyou run out of ideas," said Percy lastweek. "Columbia suggested I look intothe songs on the Top 100, and I did. Ifound out that after you take away thefrantic arrangements, strip the songdown to its bare essentials, denude it,there are a number of hit rock songs thatare not bad at all. So I thought I'd tryit. I happened to have written a songcalled "Theme For Young Lovers," andwe decided to use that as our LP title."

"These albums have done well for me.They sell well and I think they havegained for me a whole new young au-dience who hardly knew I existed. Atthe same time, in doing these albums, Idid not destroy myself artistically. Any-way, it's time to close the gap betweenso-called "good" music and so-called"bad" music, and I hope that I can helpdo it. You know, you can't sit still inthis business or you'll go backwards.

"Summer Place" sales. Faith's big-gest single record hit in the past fiveyears was "Theme For A Summer Place,"which by now has sold close to two mil-lion throughout the world. "That recordtook four months to happen," notedPercy. The picture had to get out to thesuburbs and the kids had to see it. Thepicture became a big favorite with thekids, and so did the theme. I received lotsof mail about my record. One youngsterwrote me and said everytime she heardmy record she cried."

Over the past year Faith has becomeone of the most active conductor -ar-ranger -composers in Hollywood. He haswritten the scores to three movies, "I'dRather Be Rich," one of the Tammy pic-tures, and the upcoming movie "LoveGoddesses." In December he went toEurope for a vacation, and at the sametime he did four shows for the BBC TVprogram "The Best Of Two Worlds," inwhich top orchestra leaders from boththe U.S. and Britain perform on alternateweeks. According to Percy it has donevery well.

Faith also gets a chance now and thento get out and play his favorite game:golf. (He plays in the low 80's). "But notas much as I'd like to," says Percy. I'mstill too busy." B.R.

Two young menmoving upIndie record producers Pete Udell and Gary Geld areriding high with hits by Gene Pitney and a lucrativemusic company. Now they'd like to try a Broadway musical

ON WAY UP. Peter Udell munched onthe chromium plated stem of his funnylooking pipe and remarked that he wouldlike to compose a Broadway musical.Preferably with his inseparable partner incrime, Gary Geld.

Peter Udell and Gary Geld are justthe sort of twosome who could write aBroadway musical. The kind that mightbe a smash hit like "Hello Dolly" or"Funny Girl." Chances are however, thatmight not be for several years yet.

Right now, the pair are gaining mo-mentum in the songwriting, record pro-ducing and publishing field, for whichtheir activities are quartered in a fairlylarge, but unpretentious suite of officeson West 57th Street, N.Y.C. The offices,which they share with Brian Hyland'smanager, Sam Gordon, who also controlsmost of the publishing interests, are load-ed with gold discs and ASCAP citations.These awards, which embrace severalbranches of the music industry, wereearned by sheer hard work.

STARTED THREE YEARS AGO. Geld -Udell enterprises is just about three yearsold. It started with the Jackie Wilsonmillion seller "Tear of the Year" andranges uphill and down dale to the cur-rent Gene Pitney release.

In the early days when Pete Udell andGary Geld were almost on the breadline,and before they teamed up to become oneof the most enterprising companies in themusic industry, they lived next door toeach other in New York's Greenwich Vil-lage.

"I was writing lyrics and Gary waswriting music," said Pete, "And eventhough we were neighbors for a year,we didn't meet until we ran across eachother in the same music publisher's of-fice. That's where the association began."

WROTE JACKIE WILSON HIT. In thebeginning, it was pretty difficult for theboys to get off the ground, but through anintroduction to Nat Tarnapol, Jackie Wil-son's manager, they broke into the scenevia the r & b route with Wilson's mil-lion selling "Tear of the Year." In thesame field, they followed up with "TheWay I Am."

When questioned on their backgroundfor writing r & b hits, Pete said, "Well,I spent a lot of time in the South, and

the writing came naturally to me. Bythe same token, I've written a lot ofcountry music."

The boys still keep a hand in the r & bgroove, but soon after their success withJackie Wilson, they turned to Brian Hy-land, who'd had a sticky period after thesmash of "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny . . . ,"and was unable to sustain his initial im-pact.

BROUGHT BACK HYLAND. For Brian,they wrote and produced "Let Me BelongTo You," "Sealed With A Kiss," "GinnyCome Lately," "I May Not Live To SeeTomorrow," and other songs which ledhim back to the charts.

"Between Hyland sessions, and writingarrangements for other artists such asRay Peterson and Joni James, we'd rundown to Nashville" said Gary. "In thelast eighteen months we've spent a lotof time there and written and cut demosof loads of country songs.

"Even though we come from New York,we were lucky enough to be acceptedright from the start by Nashville mu-sicians and producers and when we cutat the Bradley-now Columbia-studios,we have nothing but the finest peopleon our sessions."

COUNTRY HITS TOO. Country musiccircles quickly accepted the simplicity ofUdell's lyrics and Geld's instrumentationwith the result that several artists such asSkeeter Davis, Margie Singleton andGeorge Jones have used their material.

As a matter of fact, Geld -Udell wonan ASCAP award for their composition"He Says The Same Things To Me,"which was a Skeeter Davis hit last year.

The team's producing career startedwith Hyland and, including several coun-try artists, runs up to the last two GenePitney singles.

STRONG WITH PITNEY. "When `I'mGonna Be Strong' with Gene Pitney wasa smash, it gave us back the confidence weneeded," said Pete. "Until then, the scenehad been pretty quiet for some time.When it happened, we had requests tocut everyone, but we decided to takeslow and calculated action rather thanrush into anything.

"Ultimately we cut a new session withGene. The songs we recorded at that ses-sion took a month to prepare and ar-

range. Like Gene, we wanted every sideto be treated with equal importance. It'sas important to us as producers and song-writers to have quality as it is to Geneto have a hit."

LUCRATIVE MUSIC FIRM. Now, in ad-dition to songwriting and producing rec-ords, Geld -Udell have a lucrative musicpublishing business in operation. In thelast four months or so, it has received agreat deal of their attention, and they havea couple of writers under contract.

"This doesn't necessarily mean we'regoing to pull from our own music cata-log every time we record an artist," saidGary. "In fact, we're in the unique posi-tion of going to other publishers for ma-terial. Believe me there's so little goodstuff around that we can't afford to go nofurther than our own shelves.

"Neither do we restrict our catalog tomaterial associated only with the artistswe record ourselves. We operate on aregular basis, and often pick up copy-rights on stuff we hand out to other sing-ers. That's the only way to expand."

In the future, Geld -Udell have a lot ofexciting deals coming up, including amovie soundtrack score (title still on thesecret list), and new sessions with GenePitney, and some other big names out ofNashville. JUNE HARRIS

BALTIMORE WINNER. Blonde, blue-eyed, 22 -year -old Bobbi Martin is givingBaltimore its first winner of the year, asone jockey put it, following the collapselast fall of the baseball Orioles and thefootball Colts.

"I was really shook up about both ofthem," Coral's bright new singing hopetold us last week during a visit to Decca-Coral's Park Avenue headquarters. "I'vealways been a sports fan and I've playedbaseball and football too. You probablywouldn't believe it, but when I was ateenager in Baltimore I was a softballpitcher and in one seven inning game, Ihad 19 strikeouts.

LITTLE MISS TOMBOY "I played foot-ball when I was 12 and 13, even up to 14 Iguess. I was the only girl on the team.We played tackle football on cement. Ifthat wasn't exciting enough, we some-times would jump off roofs and see whocould jump from the highest point with-out breaking something.

"It was rough, sure, but I came throughall of that all right. I could always runpretty fast. As far as singing goes, I start-ed that in school too, in my teens andbefore I was old enough to work in nightclubs, I'd go out on packages, throughneighboring cities and sing. I startedworking in a bank when I was 16. I hadto lie a little about my age but I got thejob.

NEW YORK WITH $60. "Nothing wasreally happening in Baltimore so when Ifinally got to be 18, I put $60 in mypurse and took off for New York to takethe place by storm."

Bobbi bunked in with the daughter of afriend from Baltimore. The daughter, adancer, made it possible for the 18 year

old hopeful to make her $60 last forsix weeks. "I refused to work until Ifound something I really wanted, likegetting into the recording business, butfinally I just had to do something and Igot a job with the National MaritimeUnion," Bobbi continued.

SANG IN HOSPITALS. In short or-der, Bobbi met Miriam Love, describedas "a singer who gave up her own sing-ing to manage me," and became activesinging in hospitals and Armed Forceslocations in a program underwritten bythe 52 Club, a combine of millionaireswhose endowments made such entertain-ments possible.

Bobbi finally took a crack at the rec-ord business in a sort of home madeproduct (with her new manager callingthe signals) on one of her own songs,"Is It True What They Say About Al?"which was put out on the Maypole labelin New York only. That apparently wasenough to catch the ear of Coral a. andr. man, Henry Jerome, who got excitedabout the potential and signed Bobbi.

THE LONG, LONG WAIT. "I signedwith Coral eight months after I got toNew York but I recorded six differenttimes over almost three years before Isaw anything happening," she said. "Andit took my first hit, "Don't Forget I StillLove You," months to really make it.

"Maybe it was better this way. I've hadto really scrape to get by at times andI've sung for just about every kind ofaudience. So I've had the experience. Nowwhen I go out and do a television datewhether I'm singing or just promotinga record, I probably come off a lot bet-ter. I do want to become an all-roundentertainer so I'm happy for the experi-ence and the chance to make my mis-

takes before anybody knew who I was."STUDYING ACTING TOO. Bobbi, who

lives on New York's Upper West Side, istaking acting lessons with coach JackManning and is getting herself groomedfor the night club circuit as well. Inaddition, she's one of those successfulyoung songwriters with no particulartraining. "I studied voice for about sixmonths. That's the only music I've had.But I've tried writing. Some of themhave been published and one is on myfirst album, which has just been released.

"I've had one song recorded by Joan-nie Sommers called "I Need Your Loveand Miriam says another singer is cut-ting a song of mine. I like writing. It'sthe only hobby I've got. Once in awhileI record my own things, but there are somany good songs around, I'd never limitmyself to my own.

SOUNDS LIKE PATSY CLINE. "Youknow, it's interesting that some peoplethink I sound like Patsy Cline on my bigrecord. It's the first time I've ever beentold that and it was completely uncon-scious. Actually I was a fan of hemhad even written a song for her called"I'm a Fool," but she died a week laterand never even heard it.

"If I sound at all like Patsy, it mayeven be because my big record was madein Nashville. The others were made isNew York with no success and Henry(Jerome) felt we should give Nashvillea try, which we did last Spring. That'show long ago it was and how long it tookthe record to happen. But it must hatebeen just the right song and those Na&...-ville people that did it. The musiciansdown there are really terrific. You canhardly help having a hit with them anyour side." as

Who Needs It?

Recently while idlingaway a few hours rif-fling through the currentSchwann Long Playing Rec-ord Catalog (you rifflewhat you like, I'll rifflewhat I like), I ran acrossa very interesting statistic.Well, fairly interesting.

A company called Fleet-wood Records currently hasavailable, for anyone who'sinterested, a catalog of 55different 12 -inch albums ofdrum and bugle corpsmusic. Think of it . . .

roughly 50 hours of drumsand bugles! Almost enoughto last through World WarIII.

Anyway, that started meto thinking about what hap-pens at half time all overthe world. And it's a dis-couraging thought. For in-stance, in the more flam-boyant areas of California,beauty contests, twist dem-onstrations, and speeches byfar -right spokesman arepresented at half time whilethe local drum and buglecorps plays "Blues In TheNight March." In Louisiana,a Dixieland band takes thefield and plays the old-time,down and - dirty Storyville kind of jazz while, it isrumored, certain paintedladies take up their postsunder the stands. . . .

And you all rememberwhat happened in Germany

at half time, time after time.That little guy and his crewgot to swinging so good onthe speeches and the march-ing around, the game gotlost for all that half-timeing. In France they justused to knock out a newgovernment at half time un-til DeGaulle came back andruined that. Now they tastecanned wine, make faces,and get drunk anyway.

March Time At StadiumIn this country, at least

in the civilized portions ofit, the half is usually con-sumed by several marches.The fifth is usually con-sumed by the half. First isthat march made by long-suffering husbands tnd fi-ances to the refreshmentstand for maraschino cher-ries or hot toast or someother delight for her. Sec-ond is that determinedmarch made by those wild-eyed devils seeking some-one who will lay off a pieceof action that has turnedvery stale, indeed. Last, andperhaps least important ofall, is that hardy little bandof youngsters who march

cleanly onto the field, pacedby a high-stepping gal withice -blue legs or three fruityfreshmen in ice cream pantsand sort of white turtle-neck sweaters. They playOn Wisconsin or Swanee orBuckle Down Winsocki to acrowd that is intent on go-ing to the john, gettingsomething to eat, lookingfor some action.

Inevitably the trumpetplayer's lip sticks to themouthpiece of his horn. Theglockenspiel player ad libsa couple of hot licks andthrows the bass drummeroff the beat. The new trom-bone player turns and strutssmartly for two steps be-fore he realizes left is notright.

Football music . . . whoneeds it? Not at half-time,anyway. Later. Like, in theparking lots when everyoneis trying to find a blue 1963Chevvie with whitewallsand flabby seat covers.Then, and only then, do wereally need the kind of sus-taining vigor that you getwhen you hear a marchingband.

But during the game . .

bah! who listens?

Anka Helps "Hullabaloo"by June Bundy

"Hullabaloo" (NBC-TV)was much better on its sec-ond night out, and host PaulAnka was largely respon-sible. His brassy self-confi-dence and vital drive (some-times too overpowering onmore sedate variety tele-casts) is in perfect harmonywith "Hullabaloo's" live -young format.

Bouncing around like arock and roll Milton Berle,Anka worked solo and withpractically every act on thebill including Liza Minelli,Johnny Rivers, and DionneWarwick. If the "Hullaba-loo" producers decide todrop their rotating-emseepolicy and feature a regularhost, Anka is obviously theirman.

Ironically, "Hullabaloo"did better rating -wise on thefirst show than the second.However, Joey Heatherton,destined to be this genera-tion's Lana Turner, willwiggle her way through an-other provocative dance rou-tine on "Hullabaloo" laterthis month, which shouldhelp raise the rating tem-perature.

Capitol Gets TrackCapitol Records is expected

to have the soundtrack albumfor the next Beatles motionpicture. The film, tentativelytitled "Beatles Film NumberTwo," will commence shootinglater this month in Nassau, theBahamas.

United Artists Records hada two million seller with thesoundtrack to the Beatles firstfilm, "Hard Day's Night" lastyear. It's understood that theoriginal UA track deal wasmade in the fall of 1963, fol-lowing the Beatles initial diskrelease here on Swan Records,before Capitol had brought

out its first Beatles discs. Now,according to a qualified sourcewithin the Capitol organiza-tion, its parent firm, EMI inEngland, has passed the worddown that since the Beatles areexcusive contract artists onEMI and Capitol, all futuresoundtrack product will be theproperty of these labels.

VeeJay Exec TripVeeJay Records' top execu-

tive team is making the Euro-pean scene. President, RandyWood; executive vice presidentJay Lasker, and label founder,Jimmy Bracken, started theirtour at the San Remo MusicFestival and followed withstops in Milan, Paris, Hamburgand Berlin to meet with inter-national reps in the Philips or-ganization for their variouslines.

DONNA'S HERE: Her full name isDonna Fuller, and she's just beensigned to DCP Records. Her first al-bum will be called "Who Is DonnaFuller" but it's doubtful if anyonewon't know by the time it is released.Right now she's starring of the NewOrleans Playboy Club.

Nina's SettlementPremier Records and Nina

Simone have reached an out-of -court settlement of a casebrought by the singer againstthe firm last year. Miss Simonesued the company for allegedunauthorized release of an al-bum titled "Starring Nina Si-mone," which she said was is-sued without her knowledge orconsent. The singer is receiv-ing a cash settlement plus afive percent royalty on totaldomestic and foreign sales ofthe 98 -cent album.,

UA AlbumsUnited Artists Records,

which had the track to theBeatles film "A Hard Day'sNight" last winter, have anoth-er hot track from an Englishpicture ready for release. It iscalled "Ferry Cross The Mer-sey" and it features Gerryand the Pacemakers in a filmabout the clubs where the Eng-lish beat got started. The filmmay turn out to be another hitlike the Beatles flick did, andthe LP certainly should dowell under any circumstances.

Other UA releases thismonth spotlight a lookernamed Donna Fuller, a newLP by Little Anthony and TheImperials on DCP (which UAdistributes) film themes from"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"and other movies by Don Cos-ta, and a Monster dance albumbased on pop songs, like "TheGhoul From Impanema."

to the post of Manager of Mar-keting with the Cx RCA Vic-tor Record. Kayes was former-ly manager of recording cluboperations in liaison with theReader's Digest. Victor split itsclub from the Reader's Digestoperation last month.

Dave Clark GoldieThe Dave Clark Five has re-

ceived the first gold record cer-tification from the RIAA for1965. Certification was given tothe D.C. Five LP called "GladAll Over," for passing the $1million sales mark. It was thefirst LP to win a gold recordin the history of Epic Records(Bobby Vinton won one for hissingle "Roses Are Red" in1962).

Joy ExpandsJoy Music is spending over

$100,000 on its new offices, re-cording equipment, studio fa-cilities and increased person-nel, according to Eddie Joy,head of the Joy and SelectRecords labels. Parent firm,headed by veteran publisher,George Joy, is also streamlin-ing its operation and now willaggressively seek new materi-al for artists and producers.

A new wing of the firm,known as Talent ProductionsInc. (TPI) to be headed byBob Schwaid, will producemaster and demo sessions andseek out new talent as wellas working with outside indieproducers. The expansion in-corporates expanded duties forthe firm's exec line-up includ-ing special projects director, AlHam; national sales chief, ChetWoods and national promotionmanager, Johnny Farrow.

Fade Out Re -opensCarol Burnett, now re-

covered from her long illness,returns to Broadway Monday(15) in the starring role in thehit "Fade Out Fade In," whichshe created last year, and ABC -Paramount is expecting to reapnew rewards from its originalcast album.

in Britain

A major change is imminentin the record promotion pol-icy of EMI Records in GreatBritain. Since the pop recordboom of the last ten years theirrecords have been promoted inthree ways.

Firstly by the buying ofprogram time on Radio Lux-embourg, the most listened tocommercial station easily re-ceived here. Secondly by pressadvertisements in the popularmusic papers. Third methodhas been by 'plugging,' i.e., thepersuasion of DJs to use plugsin radio shows on BBC (non-commercial) radio and TV.

EMI now plans to drop allpress advertising for singlesand to concentrate on theirpromotion through radio andTV only. The press advertis-ing campaign will instead beswitched to push EMIs vastrange of albums.

Already rows are brewingover the policy switch as ar-tists and managers naturallyfeel that if the discs are notbeing advertised in the tradepress then there will be a con-sequent fall in sales. The lackof coverage namewise in thepress is considered by artistsalso to be harmful to their in-dividual reputations.

Another argument againstthe new plan is that it endan-gers the security of the 'trade'press which the record com-panies and artists badly needfor publicity. For years thesepapers have earned a majorpart of their income from rec-ord promotion advertising butnow will have to look else-where in a quietening scene forextra income. There's littledoubt that there will not beenough advertising to go

round.Another change in the face

of EMI promotion is the useof promotion man Peter Princeto secure radio and TV appear-ances before the release andduring the early life of newsingles.

EMI is keen to improve theirimage with the record buyingpublic and all these moves areseen as efforts towards thatend. Further changes will comein the company. Board of di -

Nowthere is a slump in the groupscene and the fortunes of theleaders are thought to be morefragile singles and LPs willflow more frequently.

Righteous Brothers overtooklocal girl Cilla Black in thebattle of "You've lost thatLoving Feeling." Cilla coveredthe Brothers version for EMIand Decca flew in the Broth-ers for TV spots in what theythought was a lost cause. Thetwosome however created sucha big impact on their TV spotsthat these together with An-drew Oldham's interventionby way of controversial ad-vertisements have createdgreat interest here in the two.It's now hoped that they'll re-turn for a tour.

last half year in British Disc -land was the late U.S. countrysinger, Jim Reeves, accordingto Patrick Doncaster writingin the New Musical Expressmagazine of London. Reeveswas killed in an airplane crashlast July 31 but his recordswent on booming.

"Before he died," says theNew Musical Express, "Reeveswas already making his markin Britain." In the six monthsperiod Reeves' sales mountedwith three LP's at one time inthe album parade apart fromhis singles. It was the singlesthat made him man of theyear, according to The MelodyMaker Pop Thirty.

"Jim's our man and theBeatles come fourth. This isnot to say that Reeves soldmore discs than The Beatles.They did a million in a month.But Reeves was there afterthey faded. Reeves hit inFebruary with "I Love YouBecause." In June another ofhis discs started to click-"IWon't Forget You," and itstayed in the chart till Novem-ber. In mid -November anotherReeves disc hopped into thebest-seller lists-"There's AHeartache Following Me."There is no doubt that 1964was his year."

NARAS Rolls OnFirst NARAS ballots and

NARAS eligibility lists wentout last week to all NARASmembers. On the eligibilitylists are a total of 3,500 selec-tions for the year 1964, in thepop, classical, country, jazzareas, as well as songs, linernotes, etc. Members are sup-posed to only vote in thosecategories they are familiarwith. Ballots are to be re-turned by February 16. Topfive selections in each cate-gory will be on the final ballot,which will be mailed out inMarch.

NARM Sessions SetThe role of the rack jobber

in the current record industrypicture will be the dominanttheme at the upcoming annualconclave of the National As-sociation of Record Merchan-

disers at the Fairmont Hotelin San Francisco, starting Feb.28. A record number of topechelon manufacturer execsare expected to be present forbusiness meetings with therackers on the general theme:"Appraisal and Assessment-What Is Our Worth."

Archie Bleyer, former headof Cadence Records, will bethe keynoter. He will be fol-lowed by a running "dialogue,"between Capitol Records Dis-tributing Corp., president, Stan-ley Gortikov and CharlieSchlang, head of Mershaw ofAmerica. Gortikov will discussthe manufacturer's view of theracker, while Schlang will ex-plain the rack jobber's attitudetoward his suppliers.

Following this exchange, apanel of top names will takeup the points one by one. Par-ticipants will include Al Ben-nett, Liberty Records; MikeMaitland, Warner Brothers -Reprise Records; Irwin Stein-berg, Mercury Records; andGortikov. Speaking for therackers, in addition to Schlang,will be John Billinis, CarlGlaser and James Tiedjens.

The second business sessionwill involve an all -industrypanel discussion including DaveRothfeld of E. J. Korvette forthe retailers; Jerry Blaine ofCosnat Distributing for dis-tributors; Sammy Ricklin ofCalifornia Music for the One -Stops. Manufacturers will berepresented by Bill Gallagher(Columbia) and Harry Jenkins(RCA Victor). Jack Geldbartof Atlanta will be among theracker spokesmen.

New AGAC ContractThe American Guild of Au-

thors and Composers proposedlast week a new contract for1965, which calls for copy-rights to new music to be inthe writer's name. The pro-posed agreement will be pre-sented to the publishers shortly.

The new AGAC contractwill not be the same as theyellow AGAC contract of 1947,which became a standard writ-er's agreement for a greatmany publishers. There is anOption clause which gives thepublisher the right to marketmaterial for six months for apayment of $250 to the writer;a Contract clause which be-comes operative when a com-mercial recording is made andreleased, and a S tandar dterms clause which means thatthe contract will be kept onfile by AGAC to prevent it be-ing changed by writers orpublishers.

The new AGAC pact is ofless importance to new young

writers, especially BMI writ-ers, who nowadays have theirown publishing firms. It ismore important to thoseASCAP writers without firmsof their own who deal withmany different publishers.

Cross -Channel HitsP. J. Proby, an American,

had to go to Britain to findstardom as a disk artist. TheHullaballoos, a blonde -thatchedBritish group, were found andrecorded first by the Ameri-can producers, Hugo and Lui-gi, of Roulette Records. Nowthe transAtlantic switch maybe about to happen again, ac-cording to Mike Jeffries, Brit-ish manager of the Animals.

"I found a new Americangirl group, Goldie and theGingerbreads, when I washere with the Animals lasttime," Jeffries s a i d. "I'vesigned them to a personalmanagement deal. They're overin England now where they'vebeen working for nothing sofar because they don't haveworking permits. The girlshave two guitars, a drum andan organ and they sing. Theykilled them at the Olympia inParis and the Beatles, theStones and the Animals all digthem. The first record is al-ready cut and they'll be outin America on Atlantic. Thesegirls are too much."

Red Roses RevivalSongwriters Sid Tepper and

Roy Bennett, Mills Music,Decca Records and DoltonRecords were all celebratingthis week on the successful re-vival of "Red Roses for a BlueLady."

The writers, the publisherand Dolton can tip their hatsto Decca and German maestro,Burt Kaempfert. Kaempfertrecorded the tune for an al-bum originally, and it was putout as a single by Decca latelast year. A slow builder, thedisk began picking up goodairplay right after the Holi-days.

Decca confidently expectsthe side to become a hit equal-ling or bettering the originalhit records of the tune back in1949. One of these was by an-other Decca artist, Guy Lom-bardo. The other, by VaughnMonroe, was on RCA Victor.

The Kaempfert success hassparked a lot of new activity.Dolton's Vic Dana appears tohave a hit vocal cover of thetune. The singer may thus berepeating a feat pulled off lastyear when he successfully cov-ered another Decca smash,"Shangri-La," by harpist, Rob-

ert Maxwell.Yet another version is out

by Wayne Newton on Capitol,despite the fact that Newtonalready has a budding hit outonly three weeks in "ComingOn Too Strong."
