Thank you to the Rotary Club of Lake Nona Lunch members who volunteered their time and services to support the ThanksUSA’s Veterans Adaptive Tennis Fundraiser at the beautiful Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

A fun morning of tennis activities included a Sponsor Pro-Am and Power 90 Cardio Doubles Tennis led by Len Simard, Isleworth Director of Tennis, followed by a Veterans Adaptive Tennis Clinic led by Brenda Gilmore with coordination from the Orlando VA Medical Center. We are grateful to our USPTA, USTA and Rotary friends in Central Florida for their support on and off the court!

Highlighting our luncheon was ThanksUSA Board Member General Ann E. Dunwoody, USA (Ret), a special treat that included a Q&A and book signing. We would be served well to emulate General Dunwoody’s leadership insights and life of service, along with her positive outlook on life.

Shae Corey, a Sgt. Matthew Thomas/ThanksUSA scholarship recipient from Orlando, was in attendance with her mother Tani Corey, a retired Navy Commander, as well as Sonya Hightower LaBosco, the mother of fallen soldier Sgt. Matthew Jody Thomas. They have formed a special bond since meeting at a USPTA Florida Division Tennis Thanks the Troops event last year as the legacy of Shae’s education continues to honor the life of Sgt. Matthew Thomas.

Please consider helping us to reach our goal of funding three ThanksUSA scholarships of $3,000

each for our military families. Your tax-deductible donation of $25, $50, $100, or more will help us reach our goal. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!

This month’s Rotary Rockstars are David Speer and Danny Bartlett. Part of the management team at the new Lake Nona Sam’s Club, they’ve already made a big splash in our community. We’re extremely excited to have them in our club!

As part of the Sam’s Club’s opening, they helped put together $25,000 in grants for local charities and organizations in Lake Nona! In addition, they have committed to providing a monthly donation of dog food to Pawsitive Action Foundation, the home of Rotary Ann!

Danny grew up in a small town called Houlton, ME at the end of I95. It was a tight nit farming community where everyone looked out for each other and lent a helping hand anytime they could. He started working for Sam’s Club in 2007 and moved multiple times looking for that one place that felt like home. Lake Nona

became that place for him and he’s never felt so much a part of the community as he does here in Lake Nona. Danny says “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been since leaving home and I’m proud to now call Lake Nona my home.”

Danny and David, we welcome you not only to our neighborhood but also into the Rotary Club of Lake Nona Lunch as Rotarians - thanks for being Rotary Rockstars!

05MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT:TWEET COLEMAN

“It is our choice. We can chooseto be happy and fulfilled.” ~. Anil Gupta

In January of every year we plan on traveling to Hawaii and Thailand to review & preview for the year. There is something magical about one’s thinking process when you travel afar to reflect and reinvigorate future plans. A clearness of purpose, renewed passion and mental boost to the power to carry out your intentions. Or so it is with moi...

Sitting on the sandy beach, outside the Hale Koa Hotel, sand between my toes, with the morning sun shining on the blue Pacific we hear so often, Aloha, Aloha. We lived in Hawaii for 18 years. Hearing aloha was so familiar. Now, hearing it again with fresh ears & eyes thinking what does that really mean?

In Hawaii, “Aloha” is often used in hello and goodbye greetings or expressing love. Those who practice the spirit of Aloha know it has a profound and deeper meaning. The meaning derives from ancient Hawaiian wisdom that was given as a gift to the Hawaiian people. The “alo” joyful, “ha” life’s energy, Aloha helps create and spreads joyful energy.

That’s awesome! Isn’t that exactly what we do in our Lake Nona Rotary Club, cultivate and share the joy of living? In one of our service projects, Sonya lead us to play Bingo on a Thursday night with the Veterans at the VA Center in Lake Nona. Clearly, we were there to uplift their spirits to create joy and acceptance in the Veterans lives.

Several Lake Nona Rotarians attended the Interact Conference in Celebration High School last month, we were there to learn and appreciate the next generation of leaders. We listened to their stories, watched their activities and danced a bit to their music. We were providing our Aloha Spirit, by giving unconditional love and respect.

Inspiring others to joyfully live life and to contribute a special connection with others. Our simple Rotary mission, “Service above Self”.
