Christmas Bellsby Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow
Thanksgiving Dayby Ella Wheeler Wilcox
We walk on starry fields of white and do not see
the daisies; for blessings common in our sight we I heard the bells on Christmas Day. Their old,
familiar carols play. And wild and sweet the words
repeat of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come, the belfries
of all Christendom had rolled along the unbroken
song of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till, ringing, singing on its way the world revolved
from night to day, a voice, a chime, a chant sublime.
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth the cannon
thundered in the South, and with the sound the
carols drowned of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace
on earth,’ I said; ‘for hate is strong, and mocks the
song of peace on earth, good-will to men!’
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ‘God is
not dead; nor doth he sleep! The wrong shall fail,
The right prevail, with peace on earth, good-will to
men!’
the daisies; for blessings common in our sight we
rarely offer praises. We sigh for some supreme
delight to crown our lives with splendor, and quite
ignore our daily store of pleasures sweet and
tender. Our cares are bold and push their way
upon our thought and feeling. They hand about us
all the day, our time from pleasure stealing. So
unobtrusive many a joy we pass by and forget it,
but worry strives to own our lives, and conquers if
we let it. There’s not a day in all the year but holds
some hidden pleasure, And looking back, joys oft
appear To brim the past’s wide measure. But
blessings are like friends, I hold, who love and
labor near us. We ought to raise our notes of
praise while living hearts can hear us. Full many a
blessing wears the guise of worry or of trouble;
far-seeing is the soul, and wise, who knows the
mask is double. But he who has the faith and
strength to thank his God for sorrow has found a
joy without alloy to gladden every morrow. We
ought to make the moments notes of happy, glad
Thanksgiving; the hours and days a silent phrase
of music we are living. And so the theme should
swell and grow as weeks and months pass o’er us,
and rise sublime at this good time, a grand
Thanksgiving chorus.

LOS ANGELES, CA—The last year has been
the third driest on record throughout Los
Angeles, the National Weather Service
announced. From Oct. 1, 2017 to Sept. 30,
only 4.72 inches of rain fell Downtown. Since
record-keeping began in 1877, only 2001-02
and 2006-07 were drier. Rainfall was 10.21
inches below normal, or just 32 percent of the
normal seasonal rainfall of 14.93 inches,
according to the weather service. Ominously,
five of the driest 10 years, including the top
three driest years in Downtown Los Angeles
have happened this century. These included
the 2012-2013 season and 2013-2014.
"Rainfall in downtown Los Angeles has been
below the 30 year (1981-2010) normal in 6 of
the past 7 water years, in 12 of the 17 water
years since the 2001-2002 season, and in 14 of
the past 20 water years," the Weather Service
noted. "Rainfall has also totaled less than 10
inches in 5 of the past 7 water years, and in 10
of the past 20 years."

bullet train route through her district unless the plan is
amended to be underground in the area. The proposed
route, which still needs to be approved by the California
High-Speed Rail Authority's board, calls for the 38-mile
Burbank-to- Palmdale section of the train line to include
24 miles underground and a portion in the Sun Valley area
above ground. The Sun Valley community "already faces
several environmental issues including landfills, auto
dismantling yards, and heavy industrial uses abutting
residential neighborhoods" according to the resolution
introduced by Councilwoman Nury Martinez. Los
Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said last month that he is
"not yet" in support of the proposed route, but did say he
hopes a tunnel or trench will still be considered for the
San Fernando Valley above-ground portion. In a webcast
last month where the route was announced as the
preferred one among three being considered, Michelle
Boehm, the rail authority's Southern California regional
director, said it "strikes the best balance" while
considering safety, cost and the impact on communities
and the environment. The $77 billion Los Angeles-to-San
Francisco portion of the train project has an estimated
completion date of 2033, but there is no funding in place
yet to build the Southern California portion while work is
currently underway on the Central Valley portion.

Living at Horace Heidt Estates
My mom and I moved into Magnolia Estate Apartments.
All my life, I lived in the West Valley in a single family
home. When my mom presented the idea of moving into
an apartment in Sherman Oaks, I really didn’t know what
to expect. All I knew was it would be closer to my
school and closer to her work. She explained how
apartment living would be different than a regular home.
There would be a lot of separate families residing at the
same address. She told me it would be a community, our
own little neighborhood. I didn’t completely understand
what she meant. After living here for 4 months now, I’m
beginning to understand community living. There are
people of all backgrounds and ages. I’m a pretty friendly
guy and I say hello to everyone. The people here make
me and my mom feel very welcome, like we are part of a
new family. My mom and I are very happy living here.
Thanks, Mom!

Important Numbers to Have
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge
Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three
dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum —
whose kids were bored with their usual summertime
activities — are credited for creating game. Pickleball has
evolved from original handmade equipment and simple
rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada.
The game is growing internationally as well, with many
European and Asian countries adding courts. Why Call it
“Pickleball?” Pickleball has a very interesting name,
especially since no pickles are used. Accounts of how the
name originated differ. According to Joel Pritchard’s wife
(Joan), she started calling the game pickleball because
“the combination of different sports reminded me of the
pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the
leftovers of other boats.”

California families are facing a severe
housing affordability crisis. Unfortunately,
Prop 10 is a deeply flawed measure that will
make our housing crisis worse. Seniors,
veterans and affordable housing experts all
oppose Prop 10 because it will make
housing less available and less affordable.
Better solutions exist such as the affordable
housing bond on the same ballot that helps
working and middle-class families – but
Prop 10 should be defeated.
NO PROTECTIONS FOR RENTERS,
SENIORS OR VETERANS.
Prop 10 has no protections for renters, seniors,
veterans, or the disabled.
NO RENT ROLLBACKS.
Prop 10 has no specific provisions to reduce
rents.
NO NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
Prop 10 contains zero funding for affordable
housing and contains no requirements that
housing be built.
StruffoliStruffoliStruffoliStruffoli are fried dough balls that are covered in honey and sprinkles, all served in a
mound. This golden sweet treat is an Italian
Christmas staple. Struffoli are made from simple
ingredients with easy prep, but taste anything
but!

Add oil to a pot with tall sides (about 3-qt. capacity) and
place over medium heat on the stovetop. Once oil reaches
375°F, add about one-third of the dough balls and allow
them to fry for a few minutes, until they turn golden-
brown. Remove the struffoli from the oil and place on a
plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Continue with the remaining two batches, placing a layer
or two of paper towels between batches. Let struffoli
cool, and then place them in a bowl. Heat honey in a
small saucepan until it's warmed and easily pourable.
Pour warmed honey over top of the struffoli and stir to
evenly coat. Arrange struffoli on a plate in a big mound
and sprinkle nonpareils over top. Allow to cool and serve
at room temperature. Store in an airtight container at
room temperature.
Recipe Notes
*Use your preferred oil for frying - peanut, canola, etc.
You'll want one with a neutral taste and a high smoke
point. Making sure the oil is at the correct temperature
minimizes the amount of oil that gets absorbed by the
struffoli. Nutritional info is notoriously difficult to
calculate for deep frying recipes because only a portion
of the oil is absorbed by the food you're frying. As a
rough estimate, the nutritional info here assumes about aIngredients

1 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt

Instructions
Lightly beat eggs in a mixing bowl. Add sugar,
lemon peel, vanilla extract, salt, and 1 cup of the
flour and stir until combined. Flour a work
surface and turn out dough onto it. Knead in
remaining 1/4 cup of flour. The dough should
only be mildly sticky - not too much. If it's too
sticky to handle, add additional flour 1 tbsp at a
time until it reaches the desired consistency.
Using a paring knife, cut dough into 10 equally-
sized sections. Roll each section into a long, thin
cylinder about 1/2"-thick, and slice them into
approximately 1/2"-wide pieces.
