The community internet café “The Local Hub” closed in June. Since then many customers, volunteers and ex-staffhave expressed disappointment and a desire to see it continue. We at Kintore Konnect are also really disappointed atthe closure of the Hub. Not only was it our contact address but the owners and staff were extremely helpful to us byacting as our distribution point and collection point for our mail and competition entries and in many other ways. Wewould like to thank them for all the help they have given us..It is hoped that the Hub will re-open at some point soon but in the interim, have kindly agreedto act as the distribution point for the magazine and the will act as the collection point for competitionentries. We really appreciate their co-operation and would like to thank them for their assistance.

For several years now, Kintore residents Ainslie Reidand Jim Coutts have taken on the task of acquiringflowers, planting them in tubs and baskets in the towncentre and maintaining them by regular watering. Thissummer will see a big increase in the floral displays, duemainly to the generosity of many local businesses.

financed the purchase ofa purpose made trailer with a 200 gallon water bowser andall the equipment necessary to water the plants.

provided a vehicle to tow the trailer and severalindividuals have volunteered to drive the towing car andwater the plants twice weekly. More volunteers for thistask would be appreciated, to spread the workload andanyone wishing to help can contact Ainslie Reid on632956.

blacksmiths have fitted newbrackets to secure the floral baskets to lamp posts;

. provided a purposemade barrow to move the tubs and baskets;

contributed by purchasing additional tubs andbaskets and supplied the plant feed. The following local businesses all contributed to thepurchase of plants and compost:-

A fantastic contribution by all concerned and a greatexample of good community working.

The picture shows Jim Reid, Jim Coutts’ wife Mabel,Malcolm Allan and Ainslie Reid with the new trailermounted water bowser.

The ever-growing size of Kintore is often discussed. It wasa topic of interest 130 years ago, too, as this paragraph fromthe 1 June 1879 shows: "Not for a long time has there been so many buildingoperations going on in Kintore. Mr Emslie, Ashgrove, hasjust finished a row of very nice cottages on High Street, andMr Maitland, Carpenter, has entered his new shopimmediately opposite; we have seen the plan of his newcottage, which we believe will have the finest appearance ofany in Kintore. Then, on the square, the old school is away, and Mr. Still,Merchant, is erecting a fine block two storey house and shopwith ample cellarage beneath; his present shop is to be takenin, to increase the North of Scotland Bank accomodation;Mr Fraser, Baker, has bought a feu off Hawthorn adjacentto Bonner's property, and is erecting a fine cottage andbakehouse there."

Having moved away from Kintore 25 years ago up to thehighland capital Mrs Caroline Duff (nee Law) always likesto hear about the Kintore Pipe Band. She wrote to usfollowing the article in the June issue to introduce herselfas the first female to join the band. Caroline fought hard tofulfil her dream of joining the Kintore Pipe Band and in1974 after a stint with the Deeside Ladies Band her dreamwas realised. Caroline was one of several members of the Law Familywho played with the band going back to the founding of theband. There was John Law, a founder member of the band,who as far as she could recall was an uncle of brothersJames and Ian Law, her uncle and father, followed byCaroline and her brother Eric. Not satisfied with being the first female in the KintorePipe Band, Caroline also made history in 1975 by being thefirst female to do the Lonach March. Nowadays it iscommon to see females doing the march. Caroline is looking forward to the Pipe Band reunion inSeptember.

More and more people are taking out pet insurance andwe consider it to be a very important part of owning a pet.Veterinary medicine has developed greatly over recentyears and we can now offer our pets similar treatmentsand care available to us on the NHS. However the costs of offering this level of care are highdue to the investment in diagnostic equipment, the cost ofnew tests and new drug development. There are alsoreferral centres in Edinburgh and Glasgow with specialistsin individual fields who have spent years studying newtechniques offering world class Veterinary care for themore unusual cases. Pet insurance is an important consideration if you wouldlike to be able to give your pet the best care available whenit needs it most. Many people think of insurance to cover accidentshowever more claims are made for illness than accidents.One in three pets will need Veterinary treatment each yearand around 80% of older pets will claim on their insuranceeach year. In fact pet insurance claims are more likelythan household or car insurance claims. There are a large number of providers of pet health careinsurance and not all the cover is the same so how doesone make an informed decision? The basic level of covermay cost less than you think. The more comprehensivemay cost slightly more but there is a policy to suit allbudgets. However you need to consider a number offactors such as how long the cover lasts (some policies willonly pay out for long term treatments for 12 monthsleaving you to pay the rest), excesses that have to be paidand exclusions (things that the insurance company willnot pay out for – some companies are better than others

regarding these). Many insurance companies will also offer 3rd partyliability cover for damage caused by your dog. This is avery important thing to consider especially as you willoften be legally liable for any damage caused by your dogincluding running onto a road and causing an accident. In January 2005 the Financial Services Authority (FSA)introduced new regulations which govern the selling of petinsurance. These regulations are intended to protectconsumers and state that as Vets we cannot give advice onindividual pet insurance companies. We cannot even tellyou which companies to avoid so read all documentationcarefully to be sure you are making the right choice. Vetsare allowed to advise on one company as long as theyundergo training. We as a practice are registered torecommend Petplan Insurance. We chose this company(as most Vet practices often do) as in our experience theyare one of the best companies to deal with, offering themost comprehensive cover and we have the least problemswith payments from this company. They do have 12month and lifelong policies and I would recommend thelifelong policy to my clients. Visit our website to downloada fact sheet about insurance. Insurance does not coverpreventive/elective treatment e.g. vaccinations, neuteringbut we do have a 'Healthy Pets Club' at Donview Vetswhich allows you to spread the cost of your vaccines,worming & flea/tick treatment by monthly direct debit.Members also get twice yearly health checks for their petsand discounts throughout the practice on things such asneutering and dentals, please call in to find out more.

The stone circle on Tuach Hill was recently investigated by a team ofarchaeologists led by Prof. Richard Bradley and Amanda Clarke ofReading University. The archaeologists already knew this area wellfrom previous work at Broomend of Crichie.The Tuach stone circle has been badly damaged over the years byfarming, rabbit burrows and tree planting. In addition, Victorianenthusiast C.E. Dalrymple excavated the site some 150 years ago andremoved an urn containing human ashes. This dig also caused damageto the circle. Prof. Bradley's team were able to use the latest techniquesto discover the original position of the stones, together with morehuman burnt remains and some worked stones. Their main interest,however, was in the alignment and underlying structure of the circle,which appears to be of a type rarely seen.The finds, together with Dalrymple's previous finds which are inEdinburgh, will be carbon dated, and we look forward to reading thereport on the dig when it is published. From May to July the pipe organ in the church, which is approximately 100 years old, underwent amajor overhaul. It was fascinating to watch the process as hundreds of parts were carefully marked, dismantled,cleaned and eventually reassembled. To the untrained eye like mine the whole process seemed haphazard, and Iwondered if the work would take much longer than anticipated. I was delighted on returning from holiday to find theorgan back in working order and enriching our worship services once again. Of course, I shouldn’t have doubted asDavid Loosely, who undertook the work, knew exactly what he was doing and has done a splendid job.At first sight and sound the organ is the same. However, it is not exactly as it was before. David has made somechanges to improve the performance and sounds that the organ produces. Some of the changes can be seen e.g. betterlighting of the consul and pedals. Many of the changes are not visible to the eye and are of a more technical nature.All the changes, however, have been made to make our organ fit for service for many years to come.Some thoughts: The organ is still obviously the organ that has been in Kintore Church for almost a century, but it has been adapted

over the years and new technology has been introduced. The church also needs to be responsive to changingcircumstances. A pattern of church life that was appropriate last century is not likely to be effective in 2011. TheKintore of today is very different to the village I came to in 1992. How much greater the differences if you go backeven further!

Just as the pipe organ is made up of many working parts each with a purpose, so the church consists of manydifferent people. It is at its most effective when everyone is working well and playing their part.

Just as the organ needed an overhaul after many years of faithful service, so the church has to ensure that it is fitfor purpose for today. A regular congregational “health check” is essential if the church is going to be able to serveeffectively.

Along with other Church of Scotland congregations in this area, Kintore Kirk Session is currently developing a visionfor our congregation to guide us over the next few years. We are reviewing the kind of church family that we currentlyare, and how well we are serving the Kintore community. Our goal is to become much better at sharing God’s lovewith those around us – a church for the 21st century! You can help us, by offering comments and suggestions as theprocess continues. Give me a call (01467-632219) or e-mail me at [email protected] always, we warmly invite you to join us for any of the regular activities that we hold.

In the last magazine, reference was made tothe cancellation of The Bothie project dueto lack of community support. Manypeople expressed disappointment at thisturn of events, verbally and on Facebook

and at the Action Kintore AGM held on 19May, there was unanimous support for

continuance of the project. Also at the AGM, there was recognition of the organisationswhich have supported youth facilities in Kintore, by donatingmoney to pay for this years’ lease of the rooms in the Town

House in the centre ofKintore. The groupphotograph (left) showsrepresentatives of theseorganisations, together withfour members of the YouthForum and a commemorative

plaque, which is now displayedwithin The Wee Bothie in the Square. A ‘volunteers’ meeting was arranged at the school on 7 Julyand several very enthusiastic people attended and got involvedin discussing the way forward.

Of particular significance is the recruitment by ActionKintore of Youth Development worker Kelly Sinclair. Herfirst contributions were at the 7 July meeting, where herorganisational and peopleskills were evident. Thephotograph (right) showsKelly with members of theYouth Forum at themeeting.

With the architect and builder still very keen to continue, itseems the building project is now firmly back on track. Theapplication for a Building Warrant had not been withdrawnand a Council decision regarding this is expected at the endof August and if successful, construction of The Bothie shouldstart soon after. As previously stated, community support for this project isvital and volunteers for the many and varied tasks associatedwith the build, running the building and general youth workwill always be welcome. Kelly Sinclair can be contacted on0784 226 5814.

is a new play by Mike Gibb (Mother of All the Peoples, Five Pound & Twa Bairns, Clarinda, Lest We Forget) set in the NorthEast of Scotland, inspired and based on the writings of Lorna Moon, the lass from Strichen who became the highest paid Hollywood screenwriter of herera.During the later part of her life Lorna wrote a series of short stories, subsequently published as Doorways In Drumorty, which caused controversy in hernative Aberdeenshire with many of the locals recognising themselves amongst the thinly disguised characters. The play interweaves several of these stories,both amusing and poignant, into a work that is warm, charming and humorous and that captures the mood of the rural North East in the 1920's, an erawhen the chief currency was gossip!

:‘Excellent acting, most enjoyable entertainment.’; 'Wonderfully acted. Simple but very effective production’; ‘Excellent show’; ‘Funny, talented cast, veryenjoyable!'; 'Well written and acted with a superb small and talented cast. Another success!'; 'Subject matter still very relevant in 21st Century northeast villages! Great fun!'; 'It's good to hear the Doric, we need more plays like this.'

by Mike Maran and Philip ContiniThe story of the Italians who emigrated 100 years ago and started new lives in Scotland, told by Mike Maran with music performed by David Vernon(accordion).An adventure story about a generation of Italians who left their sunny hillsides to start new lives in towns and villages all over Scotland.A success story about families who opened cafes, sold ice cream and fish and chips.A tragic story about the terrible years of the second world war which left Italian families in Britain exposed and vulnerable. Italians were labelled as 'enemyaliens' and many were interned or deported.A sad story about the Italians who lost their lives when SS Arandora Star, a ship taking internees to Canada, was sunk on July 2nd 1940. Nearly every Italianfamily in Scotland lost a father or a husband.A brave story of healing and thriving in the post war years as second and third generation Scottish Italians make a unique contribution to life incontemporary Scotland.

The annual and now well established Kintore SummerFestival took place on Saturday 21st May, with a DuckRace the following day. Over the past few years,Rotarians from the local Club have played a significantpart in the Summer Festival arrangements, bygenerally assisting in the setting up of stalls and otherroutine tasks, in addition to running a stall of their ownand organising and actually running the Duck Race,which this year was sponsored by Sandy Thain CarSales.

In the lead up to the event, Rotarians KennyThomson and Iain Burgess joined members ofKintore Youth Forum and Kintore CommunityCouncil, to ensure the Town Square area wasspick and span and ready for the biggest day inKintore's calendar. Local volunteers Ainslie Reidand Jim Coutts, who are well known for theirvoluntary work in relation to the annual floraldisplays in Kintore, were also in attendance toprune trees and trim shrubs. Fallen leaves andother debris was collected, bagged and loadedonto a trailer.
