IMR Supply Quality RV Johnny Mac’s Maple Hill Golf WD Glass Pyman Insurance Agency By Devere Bendixon Countless years of OFD horseshoe tournaments found Jim and Rich Beckley and Marty Januska setting up the regulation sized pits for competition on Sunday morning. This also included whatever judging was necessary to run a fair tournament. This spring, Jim Beckley was suddenly stricken with a fatal health problem and was lost to us all, but he will not be forgotten. The motto of the International Lions Club is “we serve,” and what better example of this than Jim Beckley. In recognition of his volunteer efforts and his avid love of the sport, our tournament is now called “The Jim Beckley Memorial Horseshoe Tournament.” The chance of rain showers held the gathering to less than required attendance, but 28 individuals signed up, and 14 teams were drawn. This year’s competition was hot! The champions won all 13 of their games! The team included Sean Brisson from the Marshall, Michigan area and Roy Brackenrich of Norton Shores. In second place, losing only one game, were Marty Ja- nuska of Spring Lake and George Denhof from Ravenna. Second row: Hanna Workman, Willo Staal, Kristen Lord, Cassie Kohnke, Kaitlyn Kriger, and Caitlyn Ingersol. Front row: bat girl Olive Staal. The team is coached by Andy LaBach, assisted by Bill Workman, Matt Kohnke, Derrick Crabtree, Doug Staal, John LaBash, Ken Kriger and Kevin Boes. Fruitport Transportation team: Darlene Field, Nancy Walker, Transportation Director Becky Shackles, Carrie Whipple, Robert Strong and Cheryl Buter. (Submitted by Fruitport Transportation) On Saturday, April 30, 2011, Fruitport Community Schools sent a team of five drivers to compete in the Region 20 School Bus Roadeo. The annual Roadeo features driving challenges and obstacles. Each of the events is judged and scored. This year, 33 school bus drivers from Muskegon County competed. Fruitport drivers finished third overall with an individual driver, Cheryl Buter, qualifying to Fruitport School bus drivers place third in Roadeo compete at the state level in June. Representing Fruitport were: Cheryl Buter, Darlene Field, Robert Strong, Nancy Walker and Carrie Whipple. Fruitport Transportation would like to thank area businesses for the kind donation to help make this event a success. Also, we would like to thank the following people for judging an event: Mark and Dawn Harper, Roy and Vicki Anderson and Jeremy McGovern. It takes many volunteers to put on an event and we thank them all!
