By Devere Bendixon Countless years of OFD horseshoe tournaments found Jim and Rich Beckley and Marty Januska setting up the regulation sized pits for competition on Sunday morning. This also included whatever judging was necessary to run a fair tournament. This spring, Jim Beckley was suddenly stricken with a fatal health problem and was lost to us all, but he will not be forgotten. The motto of the International Lions Club is “we serve,” and what better example of this than Jim Beckley. In recognition of his volunteer efforts and his avid love of the sport, our tournament is now called “The Jim Beckley
Memorial Horseshoe Tournament.” The chance of rain showers held the gathering to less than required attendance, but 28 individuals signed up, and 14 teams were drawn. This year’s competition was hot! The champions won all 13 of their games! The team included Sean Brisson from the Marshall, Michigan area and Roy Brackenrich of Norton Shores. In second place, losing only one game, were Marty Ja-nuska of Spring Lake and George Denhof from Ravenna. The third place team, losing only two games, was Peggy Stitt of Hesperia and Stan Jacobs of Ravenna.•
