Thank YOU from the Director

Our Mission:To provide a child’s path to healing and justice.

I read a story the other day about a woman named Pam, who worked in downtown

Chicago. Every morning, she encountered a heavyset, middle aged woman in a

shabby coat soliciting spare change in front of an old brick church. She greeted

everyone with a smile and a pleasant “Good morning.” Pam almost always gave her

something. After almost a year of this routine, however, the woman in the shabby

coat disappeared. Pam wondered what had happened to her.

Then, one beautiful day, she was in front of the church again, still wearing the same,

shabby coat. As Pam reached into her purse for the usual donation, the woman

stopped her. “Thank you for helping me all those days,” she said. “You won’t see me

again because I’ve got a job.” With that, she reached into a bag and handed Pam a

wrapped package. She had been standing at her old spot waiting, not for a handout,

but for the people she recognized so that she could give each of them a doughnut.

She was thankful.

Like the woman in the shabby coat, we are thankful to YOU. Some of you may

have driven by our agency in the month of April and saw a field of pinwheels in our

yard. Each pinwheel – 1039 of them – represented a child who walked through our

doors. You did not have the opportunity to meet each one of them or to realize the

impact of YOUR gift ~ whether YOU gave of your time, money or talent- but we did.

So, on behalf of our board, staff and most importantly the families we serve, it’s my

honor to say THANK YOU. To make sure that you know that YOUR kindness makes

a difference in the lives of children EVERY DAY.

Look closely through these pages, YOU are in here. What Your Gift accomplished,

the lives that YOU touched is represented in every page you see.

We can’t THANK YOU enough.

To accomplish this purpose, The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center works diligently to: •Reducetheanxietyofchildabusevictimsand families created by traditional child abuse investigation and prosecution procedures •Facilitateacollaborativeinvestigation •EducatethecommunityontheRecognition, Response and Reporting of child abuse •Seekjusticeandprovidethetoolsforchildren and families to heal.

For over 20 years, The Bridge has worked in collaboration with 72 partner agencies in the Texas Panhandle including:

•LawEnforcement •ChildProtectiveServices •MentalandMedical Health Practitioners •Prosecutors

With your support, this team works together to help over 1,000 child victims each year, providing them with a voice to be heard.

I can think of no better way to help children in need, than to contribute to The Bridge, Texas’ first and our community’s children’s advocacy center. – Nathan Goldstein III, M.D.

Services We ProvideChild InterviewsThe Bridge conducts video recorded forensic (fact finding) interviews of children, ages 2-17, who have been victims of child abuse or sexual assault, witnessed a violent or drug-related crime, or fallen prey to internet crime.

The interview is the first step for a child to tell what happened in a safe, non-threatening environment. This video-recorded statement alleviates the need for the child to disclose their abuse over and over again.

Safety Education Safety Education programs are offered, free of charge to school age children. These programs are designed to teach and reinforce the three R’s of personal safety: •Recognize •Resist •Report

Community Education and PreventionThe Bridge provides interactive and informative seminars to the public, free of charge. The target audience for community education programs is high school students and adults. These programs emphasize the recognition, reporting and response to child abuse. The program topics include: •ChildAbuse,WhatIsItandWhatCanI Do About It? •Truth,LiesandSexOffenders •Let’sTalkAboutIt •It’sNotJustJenna

Victim AssistanceThroughout the investigative process, child victims and their non-offending family members receive crisis intervention support, assistance in completing the Crime Victim’s Compensation application, information about victim’s rights, and referrals for counseling and community services.

CounselingThe overall goal of The Bridge is to help children and their families heal from the trauma of abuse so that the crime does not define their lives. The path to recovery starts with a step into therapy.

My monthly donation to The Bridge gives me a wonderful peace of knowing that, in a small way, I’m helping the extremely talented folks at the Bridge help kids deal with scary situations and hopefully preserve a little bit of their innocent childhoods. –Jody Reynolds

For years, The Bridge has been one of my favorite organizations. As a trained counselor, I have seen the caring and supportive environment that The Bridge provides for hurting children. We chose The Bridge as the benefactor of our Hot Blooded and Cold As Ice Race Series because of this dedication to the children of the Panhandle. We believe that it only makes our community stronger for local businesses to support local organizations.– Karen Roberts, Get Fit

For much of 2013, The Bridge was under construction. Construction projects are exciting, and they present some unique challenges. We had to find different places to park, everything was covered in dust, and it seemed that the jackhammer and the phone were linked together – both starting at the same time (I’m still trying to figure that one out).

But, after the dust had settled, the small inconveniences were well worth the end result. The expansion was finished just in time to host our annual holiday open house. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by, the new addition looks great! With your support, we now have plenty of office space for our staff and team members and an amazing conference room that is perfect for meetings and training. We couldn’t ask for a better facility. So, the building season is over, right? Well, not really.

As we begin 2014, we’ve continue to build…..•Ourstaffbyaddingafull-timeOutreachCoordinatorto better meet the education needs of our community. •Ournetworkofsatelliteofficesbybeginningrenovations for a location in Clarendon to serve the 100th District. This will complete our goal of having an office within an hour’s drive of any child who needs us in the entire panhandle. •Ourskillsbyattendingtraininginordertobringthe most comprehensive services to the families we serve.

You make tHis possible. Without the support our community, it would be a constant struggle just to maintain – growth would be a pipe dream.

Looking back on the years of my association with The Bridge, I see that we’ve never not been building. And, while building and growing are challenging, I take great comfort in knowing that we never will be finished. With your help, we will always strive to better serve the children who need us. We will never “arrive”. We will always be under construction.

Every child deserves a voice. If volunteering at The Bridge/Get Fit runs will help provide them one, then we can’t think of a better use of our time. There is no greater reward than simply knowing a child is being blessed. – Coffee Memorial Blood Center

In February 2014, The Bridge proudly hosted the second annual Heroes and Legends event. Headlining the event were Hall of Fame Quarterback, Troy Aikman and Hall of Fame pitcher, Nolan Ryan. The event emcee was Reid Ryan, President of Business Operations for the Houston Astros.

In addition to the sports legends, the hero of the event was Linzi Floyd. Linzi was five years old when she was abducted from her home and victimized. Linzi and her mother, Allison shared their family’s

story and how The Bridge helped in their journey of recovery. The Floyd’s case changed the way The Bridge provided services. A 24 hour on-call program was implemented and continues today.

Major sponsors of the event include: Amarillo National Bank, Amarillo Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, Budweiser, Baptist Community Services, Chicken Express, Great Nation Investment Corporation, Maxor, United Supermarkets, Upshaw Insurance and Wal-Mart.

Andy and I believe it gives more meaning to our lives if we are charitable. We are donors of The Bridge because the agency mission is important to changing the lives of abused children in our community. – Roxanne Carter
