Hope Connections for Cancer Support is very excited to be the beneficiary of a grant from the Prince George’s County Council. This funding will allow us to partner with many other wonderful organizations to combat prostate cancer in the County. Did you know that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in Maryland after lung cancer? Mortality rates for prostate cancer in Prince George’s County are 25% above US mortality and among the highest in Maryland. The Council and Hope Connections are working hard to bring these numbers down! The program will provide educational information about prostate cancer, county resources, free medical services, and advice concerning financial and employment matters associated with coping with cancer. This will be supplemented by events where people can phone in questions. We will provide monthly sessions facilitated by licensed professionals that allow men with prostate cancer to discuss the emotional and practical components of dealing with the disease. This activity will be enhanced by the All Cancer and Caregiver support groups that we run at our Landover facility. Prostate cancer survivors often cite their family members as crucial to their recovery and sustained good health, so it’s important that caregivers receive support too. We also plan to provide three 90-minute educational workshops dealing with topics directly related to prostate cancer. All educational programs will be delivered by experts in their respective fields. Staying healthy during and post-treatment is important. In order to combat the downstream effects of prostate cancer treatment (e.g. osteoporosis, heart disease) we will add an exercise class suitable for people who have experienced this cancer. We have established a Community Advisory Committee to help with the final program format.

Our great community partners include: Emmanual Health Education, Inc. and the Community Ministry of Prince George’s County. Emmanual Health designs and delivers prostate health education to increase awareness, prostate screening to decrease incidents and high rates of mortality and provides support opportunities in many local settings. The Community Ministry helps meet the human service needs of Prince George’s County residents including reducing health disparities due to race or economic circumstances.

Other important collaborators are the Prince George’s County Health Department, local oncologists, and many local churches including Central Baptist Church of Camp Springs, Springdale Community Church, and St Stephens. Programs like ours fulfill the mission of many cancer ministries to “provide support to our members and our community, who are dealing with this disease on a personal level.” (Rev. Lincoln M. Burruss Jr., Central Baptist Church of Camp Springs). Many of our offerings will be held in community spaces to make them more convenient for potential participants. If you are interested in becoming part of our community advisory committee or are interested in hearing more about this program, please visit us at http://bit.ly/ProstateCancerIntakeForm. We will be sending out information and announcements starting in January.

physical toll that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Our facilities are homelike environments where people affected by cancer can escape the clinical setting to connect with and learn from each other. We provide support groups for people with cancer and for caregivers, educational workshops that provide learning opportunities and mind/body classes that help rebuild strength and reduce the high level of stress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Our programs are available to anyone affected by cancer, both patients and caregivers, regardless of the cancer diagnosis, stage of disease, age, economic status, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or where they receive their medical care.
