Monsoon Updates

Pakistan Met Department (PMD) Updates as of 5-9-2014

Widespread Moderate to Heavy intensity Rains/Thunderstorm Likely to Continue during

next 24 hours

The Monsoon Low Pressure Area (MLPA) is now located over Indian Punjab and is likely to move slightly northward with decreasing tendency. This weather system still has a potential to produce moderate to heavy intensity rainfall over northeast Punjab (Gujranwala. Lahore, Rawalpindi divisions), Kashmir and adjoining are-as during next 24 hours. This may aggravate the flooding in the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej Rivers and their tributaries. Punjab Forecast More widespread rain/thundershowers with isolated moderate to heavy intensity rain falls

are expected in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi divisions and Islamabad during next 24 hours. Heavy falls may generate further flash/urban flooding in the vulnerable areas.

Isolated rain/thundershowers are also expected in Sargodha, Faisalabad and Sahiwal divi-sions during the period.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Forecast

More widespread rain/thundershowers with isolated moderate to heavy intensity rain falls are expected in Kashmir during next 24 hours. Heavy intermittent rainfall may trigger fur-ther flash flooding/landslides in the vulnerable areas of Kashmir.

Scattered rain/thundershowers are also expected in Gilgit-Baltistan during next 24 hours.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Fore-cast

Scattered rain/thundershowers are expected in upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Ma-lakand, Hazara, and Peshawar divisions) while at isolated places in Mardan and Kohat divi-sions during next 24 hours. Isolated heavy rain falls are also expected in Hazara division during the period

Sindh Forecast

No significant weather is expected in Sindh during next few days.

Balochistan Forecast

No significant weather is expected in Balochistan during next few days

UNOCHA Updates as of 2-9-2014 As of 1 September, PDMA reported 1,016,559 people (97,469 families) registered as displaced from

North Waziristan Agency. All registration points are closed, except in Kurram Agency, where popula-

tion returning from Afghanistan is being registered.

As the schools open after the summer break, humanitarian partners and the authorities are making

arrangements for people to move to alternate locations.

Priority needs remain around food, health, protection, and water, sanitation and hygiene activities.

Urgent funding resources are needed to continue scaling up the humanitarian response.

A coordination hub has been established in Bannu which will allow improved coordination of humani-

tarian activities on ground.

Efforts are being made to ensure provision of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable groups, especial-

ly women-headed households

Nationwide Updates

Polio Updates as on 5-9-2014 Polio immunisation drive begins in Balochistan

A three-day polio vaccination campaign began in Balochistan’s city Chaman, which has a border link with Af-

ghanistan. According to Unicef statistics, Pakistan contributed 70 per cent polio cases to the world during the

year 2014.

Earlier this year, vaccinations were conducted on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border as a step towards cross-

border coordination between the two countries to eradicate polio.

Keeping in mind the previous cases of attack on polio workers, security has been tightened during the cam-

paign. Assistant Commissioner Izzat Nazir Baloch said security teams have been assigned to patrol the area

where the polio vaccinators are working. According to District Health Officer, 330 teams are working in 27 un-

ion councils, with two members in each team.

Only five female teams are working in Chaman, solely in the Eidgah union council, who are going door-to-door

for vaccination, said union council polio worker Asadullah who has been appointed by WHO. Female polio

worker said she was working in the Eidgah union council as it is inside the city which is safer than the outskirts.
