THE THORSBY TARGET [email protected] 780-887-0077 SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 EDITION #1380 TH RSBY TARGET Fundraising Dollars In Action From Barry Rasch On Tuesday, Thorsby CIB took another huge step on ad- vancing the Thorsby Network Of Trails to the next level in our community by brushing 90% of them. This took over 11 hrs with a hired contractor to complete the spe- cialized work. The reasons behind this were: - to make the trails more multi-use friendly and accessi- ble to all ages - to make the trails a 6’ to 8’ width along with the bridges going forward - it will allow work to be done on the trails with equipment and hauling hand tools to where they are needed - to allow access in the event of an injury on the trails - to cut back overgrown trees and bushes that began to block trail access - to allow adequate spacing to users of the trails - to relocate some walking paths away from eroding creek banks for safety In most areas minor brushing was required, while in oth- ers it took more work to remove trees where needed because they were either in the way or dead. Mulching tree debris is very visible in some areas, so users need to take their time when walking in certain areas and be careful. This is not the finished result but the first in a se- ries of steps that is needed to make them truly multi pur- pose trails. Continued trail levelling, settling and com- pacting will happen. If users happen to see chunks of tree debris on the trail we ask that you provide a helping hand to put it off to the side as it’s all of our responsibility to maintain them if you use them. Overgrown grasses have been drastically cut back to allow for a more enjoy- able walk, which turned out great. The trails have had a huge transformation so please be patient while we con- tinue to work to improve them. By brushing them we lost some grass basses and now have a lot of dirt displayed. It will compact down and the grasses will return. We also were able to remove surface roots in many areas and create a more level walking surface in areas that were rough. Next Steps: - replacing a broken bridge at the Ruff Country Trail with a new 6’ wide by 30’ bridge - improvements to a trail section at the Ruff Country Trails - addressing stinging nettle growth challenges for users Lastly some trail areas have had a few additional entry points put in which we leave for you to discover. Enjoy and stay tuned for updates.

TH RSBYTARGET

Fundraising Dollars In Action From Barry Rasch

On Tuesday, Thorsby CIB took another huge step on ad-vancing the Thorsby Network Of Trails to the next level in our community by brushing 90% of them. This took over 11 hrs with a hired contractor to complete the spe-cialized work.

The reasons behind this were:- to make the trails more multi-use friendly and accessi-ble to all ages- to make the trails a 6’ to 8’ width along with the bridges going forward- it will allow work to be done on the trails with equipment and hauling hand tools to where they are needed- to allow access in the event of an injury on the trails- to cut back overgrown trees and bushes that began to block trail access- to allow adequate spacing to users of the trails- to relocate some walking paths away from eroding creek banks for safety

In most areas minor brushing was required, while in oth-ers it took more work to remove trees where needed because they were either in the way or dead. Mulching tree debris is very visible in some areas, so users need to take their time when walking in certain areas and be careful. This is not the finished result but the first in a se-ries of steps that is needed to make them truly multi pur-pose trails. Continued trail levelling, settling and com-pacting will happen. If users happen to see chunks of tree debris on the trail we ask that you provide a helping hand to put it off to the side as it’s all of our responsibility to maintain them if you use them. Overgrown grasses have been drastically cut back to allow for a more enjoy-able walk, which turned out great. The trails have had a huge transformation so please be patient while we con-tinue to work to improve them. By brushing them we lost

some grass basses and now have a lot of dirt displayed. It will compact down and the grasses will return. We also were able to remove surface roots in many areas and create a more level walking surface in areas that were rough.

Next Steps:- replacing a broken bridge at the Ruff Country Trail with a new 6’ wide by 30’ bridge - improvements to a trail section at the Ruff Country Trails - addressing stinging nettle growth challenges for users

Lastly some trail areas have had a few additional entry points put in which we leave for you to discover. Enjoy and stay tuned for updates.

THE THORSBY TARGET [email protected] 780-887-0077 SEPTEMBER 18 2020 EDITION #1380

It has been a few weeks since my last article, in the Target. Summer is coming to an end; school is back in session and the virus is still out there and I thought it was time to provide a few updates to residents.

I have, since the spring as you all know, been a proponent for wearing a mask to help reduce the spread of the virus. Council does not propose to in-troduce a mask wearing bylaw. The Town will con-tinue to follow the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer on how we operate our facilities/events etc, and we will leave any requirement for mandatory masks and enforcement to the Prov-ince.

Council understands everyone is eager to return as many things as possible to “the norm”. So we are happy to advise that there will be a phased re-opening of the Arctic Spas Recreation Complex, hopefully starting this weekend for hockey only. While this may continue to frustrate users that ev-erything is not available, the safety of your families and the staff is paramount. With the expected sec-ond wave in the fall, we don’t know what that may mean for the complex once again. We will have to be flexible, make changes as short notice possibly, revamp and adjust, but safety will be paramount.

Staff have been working hard on the relaunch strat-egy, incorporating the various guidelines from the province. There will be no drop in sessions for the foreseeable future, only organized sports:- Sept - Phase 1 Arena & HockeyOct - Phase 2 Field House - Daytime Pickle Ball (inside) and exercise classesNo timeline yet: Phase 3 - Bowling & Racquet BallPhase 4 - GymPhase 5 - Programming

The ice is in, and the first practices will take place if all goes to plan, this weekend. Kudo’s to the mi-nor hockey volunteers who will step up to ensure our children can play hockey this winter. These are trying times and planning anything means the flexibility to change direction at a moment’s notice.

MESSAGE FROMTHE MAYOR

From Mayor Rod Raymond

Parents and teams will have to sign in for tracking purposes, and a one way system will be in place. Wearing of masks for those who wish to watch from the stands will be required, as will social distancing at all times. With your help, we will work through the processes together.

The town has bylaws in place so everyone has guidance and structure to live in the same commu-nity. I do not necessarily agree with all of them but understand why they are in place and the Town is obligated to enforce them. Public access to lane-ways that have been blocked off, either temporarily or permanently, is a concern that has recently been brought to focus. We understand some residents may have concerns regarding security issues or misuse of the laneways behind their property by others, and in a perfect world, this would not hap-pen. We cannot allow back lanes to be blocked, they must be accessible to allow for emergency service access or line servicing etc. and also oth-er residents who need to access the rear of their properties, even if only occasionally. Please help do your part and store your property within your property lines and leave the laneways clear. Bylaw will be enforcing the matter as we head info fall.

Our infrastructure issues still remain. We held back on this year’s capital projects due to the uncertain-ties of Covid, however, we continue to plan long term for the various projects, adjusting and mak-ing changes as situations and new information to help prioritize comes along. Inverted speed bumps (potholes) are everywhere and we do not have the equipment to deal with them properly. We struggle to keep up with them, and we can fill them every week, but the problem will not go away until we are in a situation to be able to repave.

Lastly, we hope to plan a fall outdoor market in Tay-lor Park for the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Outdoor events are somewhat easier to arrange and respect guidelines. Great job by Lone Wolf, CIB and the Hotel on the fundraising events that have happened in recent weeks. For the market, priority will be given to local merchants and space will be limited. There will be no charge for space, but you need to bring your own 10x10 tent and ta-ble, watch the Target and our website for more in-formation. At the same time we will be asking for public consultation on what Taylor Park can be.

Again, enjoy what is left of summer and stay safe.

Healthy Communities Initiative Open Call for Applications

From MP Gerald Soroka

September 11, 2020

OTTAWA: Gerald Soroka Member of Parliament for Yellowhead wishes to advise that Infrastructure Canada has launched an open call to non-govern-mental not-for-profit organizations who will work directly with municipalities, local governments, In-digenous communities and not-for-profit community partners to identify and fund local projects through the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative.

Organizations with existing capacity and reach can participate in this open call for applications. Eligi-bility requirements include having national reach, experience with the delivery of programs and/or community grants, a mandate that aligns with ad-vancing, strengthening and supporting commun-ities, and established networks and expertise work-ing at the community level in Canada.

Potential projects could include: supporting main street business associations to adapt seating ar-rangements, modifying recreational facilities to ac-commodate for physical distancing, building pop-up passage ways for bikes, scooters, and personal mobility devices to allow citizens to move around their communities safely, or developing apps or other digital tools to allow residents to access ser-vices remotely.

Intake for local projects will begin only after the organization(s) is/are selected and their Canada Healthy Communities Initiative funding program is established.

Organizations will have until October 16, 2020 to submit their applications.

Second World War Tribute Program

OTTAWA: Gerald Soroka Member of Parliament for Yellowhead wishes to advise that Veterans Affairs Canada’s Second World War Tribute program, a sym-bol of our country’s enduring pride and gratitude to all those who served, will receive a commemorative lapel pin and certificate of recognition to any living Canadian or Newfoundland Second World War Vet-eran.

The Second World War Tribute program concludes at the end of 2020, roughly coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the end of the war. The goal is to have as many Second World War Veterans as possible re-ceive the tribute.I encourage all Veterans organizations in the Yellow-head riding to identify living Canadian Second World War Veterans who have not already received the trib-ute.

Veterans that qualify for the Second World War Trib-ute can submit their application (individuals can also submit applications on behalf of a Veteran). Mis-placed Second World War Tributes can be replaced by submitting another application.

The design of the commemorative lapel pin is based on the original “Victory Nickel”, a coin that was cir-culated from 1943 until 1945 and re-issued in 2005 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of V-E Day. The coin featured a flaming torch and large “V”, which stood for both victory and the coin’s value in Roman numerals.

Once the Veteran’s Second World War tributes from Veterans Affairs is received, I will be honoured to per-sonally present the commemorative lapel pin and cer-tificate of recognition to each of our Veterans. Please contact my office at: 780-723-6068 or email: [email protected]

For more information regarding the Second World War Tribute, please visit: https://www.veterans.gc.ca/
