network of paths and trails in various ravines and along the river valley which makes running a very enjoyable past-time and an amazing way to meet people and keep fit and healthy.

In addition to my running travels I have visited some amazing places over the years. Some highlights include: sailing the Haida Gwaii (for-merly Queen Charlotte Islands in northern BC) where I saw no end of wild life and experienced an amazing culture, hiking the Inca Trail to Ma-chu Picchu in Peru, snorkelling the Great Bar-rier Reef, swimming with penguins in the Gala-pagos and cycling and eating my way through France. I’m not sure what inspired my interest in travel-perhaps it was learning about far off places while attending school in Thorsby.

A fairly recent past-time that I have developed is bee-keeping—I have a beehive in my back-yard in Edmonton Learning about bees has been an amazing and fascinating journey. I have learned that they are gentle creatures who go about their business without much re-gard for us (unless we are taking their honey). It has been very rewarding to see lots of bees in my backyard, watching them come and go from the hive and of course harvesting honey.

I feel very lucky and privileged to have been able to see and do the things that I have done. Despite Thorsby’s small size, growing up and attending school there gave me a strong foun-dation to further my education and to pursue my interests.

Straight Out of ThorsbyFrom the County of Leduc, from Alberta and Canada, from Singapore to the U.K., from Aus-tralia to Holland, from the USA to Panama, Thorsby graduates are making a difference. This is the 39th installment in a series of pro-files which indicate what a small school and community can produce. The people who conduct the interviews are Audrey Brosseau and John Elson. If you have. suggestions please contact John at 780-789-3822 or Audrey at 780-886-0658.

KAREN ZUREK

I graduated from Thorsby Junior-Senior High School in 1984 and subsequently moved to Edmonton in the fall to attend the University of Alberta. I graduated from the U of A in 1988 with a BSc in Pharmacy. In the summer of 1988, I was hired at the newly opened Grey Nuns Hospital in the Millwoods neighbourhood of Edmonton. Over the last ~30 years, I have worked in several different capacities at the Grey Nuns including staff pharmacist, Team Leader, Home Parenteral Therapy Pharmacist and most recently as an Antimicrobial Stew-ardship Pharmacist.

This latest role as Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist has been the most challenging and rewarding of my career. I work with an Infec-tious Diseases Physician and our role is to en-sure appropriate use of antibiotics in the hos-pital to combat the development of antibiotic resistance.

Over the years I have developed a love of trav-el. I have also developed a love of running. I have combined these two interests and have run numerous marathons and half-marathons in cities such as Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Seattle and New York City. I continue to run although not quite as far or as fast as I used to. Edmonton has an amazing

The Flufrom the Royal Care Guardian Pharmacy Team

It’s flu season! Every fall/winter we live in fear of being infected by the nasty little bug that can leave us bedridden for several days. I would like to share some information on what exactly the flu is and what you can do to protect yourself.

The flu is a virus that is easily transmitted between people causing illness. While some form of the flu can be mild, it should not be ignored as it can lead to hospitaliization and even death.

How can you protect yourself and those in your community? The #1 way of preventing the flu is by getting the flu shot. Every year, research is done to look into which strains of flu will be most common and the province creates an immunization pro-gram. This years flu program has already begun at Royal Care. Our Pharmacists can give the flu shot free of charge to anyone 9 years and older. Other-wise, public health clinics and your family doctor are among many other places you can get the flu shot. Other ways to protect yourself from the flu in-clude diligent hand washing and staying at home if you yourself are infected.

Please stop by our pharmacy for your flu shot or if you have any questions about the flu or your health. Thank you and if you have any questions that you would like answered please come to the pharmacy, phone us at 780.789.3686 or email us at pharmacy [email protected].

Leduc County council reappoints Mayor Doblanko

Mayor Tanni Doblanko was reappointed to serve her third term as Leduc County mayor at council’s organizational meeting today.

Doblanko was nominated by division seven coun-cillor Ray Scobie to serve her third term as mayor.

I’d like to thank council for their continued sup-port. We are an incredibly cohesive team and have worked hard to situate Leduc County as a leader in the region.
