A Message from Middle School Term 3 Week 3 11th August 2017

Twenty-one Middle School students and three staff had an awesome experience at this year’s GARMA Festival. We spent the weekend camped out on the Gulkula site along with several thousand other lucky campers. The theme of this year’s GARMA was “Makarrata” – the idea of coming together after a struggle for the purpose of peacemaking and healing. On Friday we joined with other students from all over Australia for the Education Fair. This involved learning about many aspects of local Yolngu culture including History, basic Yolngu Matha language, the seasons and the desire and need for makarrata. Over the next three days we participated in the Youth Forum. This was designed to develop youth leadership through fun activities demonstrating humour, respect, and unity. Workshops included topics involving confidence and well-being using programs like R U OK and Sticks and Stones. Forum highlights for many were the music and poetry workshops. Music and dance were a big part of the festival. Every morning we woke up to soothing, peaceful song - it was a great way to start the day. Late afternoons we gathered around the central stage for a Bunggul. This was a time of cultural dance and song and a number of our students joined in. The evenings were filled with a wide variety of music from local, national and international artists. ABC’s Q&A program was recorded live from GARMA on Saturday evening and we had front row seats – you may have seen us on TV! Here our students came face to face with the issues facing our indigenous peoples and realised many of the difficulties that they are dealing with. Of course much time was spent sitting around the campfire, enjoying each other’s company and making new friends from other schools. Even Ms Tolko learned some new skills based on camp survival and fire lighting. Many of our students were able to see and discuss the parallels between “makarrata” and the Christian themes of love, forgiveness and reconciliation. We were truly blessed to have the opportunity to experience a cultural event of this calibre. Bruce Douglas

How long have you lived in Nhulunbuy? My family moved to Nhulunbuy in January. We drove our 2 cars up from Echuca and camped along the way. We love our sea change. Tell us about your family. My husband and I have 4 children. They all love going to Nippers and have just started riding at the BMX track. Grace is in Year 5 and loves reading, netball and giggles a lot. Emily is in Year 3 and she loves crafts, netball and doing tricky hair braids in her own hair. Charlotte is in Year 1 and she loves singing, dancing and netball and last of all there is Xavier. He loves riding his bike, fishing and has a funny sense of humour. If you had a day to yourself what would you do? I would go and get a nice coffee and read. I love to read but often when I am reading I often fall asleep because I am so tried from all the running around I seem to do. What do you and your family like to do in your spare time? We love to go exploring around Nhulunbuy. We are in love with the amazing beaches and swimming spots. There is always something to do or go. What are you interests? I love music. Back in Victoria I loved going to shows in Melbourne. The last one I saw was Matilda and it was brilliant. Do you have a favourite quote, motto or bible verse?

GARMA Term 3 Week 3 11th August 2017

On Friday 4th August, a group of Middle School Students got their swags ready for a long weekend of camping at the GARMA Festival that is held every year. I have lived in Nhulunbuy most of my life and had not once been camping before, let alone to GARMA. Overall the whole experience was nothing like I would have expected. Everyday was jam packed with different activities to do and places to be. We were all fully submerged in the Yolngu culture and got to share our local knowledge with schools from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. When it came time to leave we were all very upset to say goodbye to the friends we made and the lifestyle that we lived for the few days that we were there. I am very grateful and blessed to be involved in such an amazing experience like GARMA and hope that I can experience it all over again next year! Ashleigh Epiha

Gratitude Day Term 3 Week 3 11th August 2017

On Friday, as lots of the other students had gone to GARMA, the Middle School students took part in a day of gratitude. We made dinner for our families: curry and chocolate eclairs. We wrote our parents a letter thanking them for all they do for us. We watched a movie about Mother Teresa and how she gave her life to helping others. My family loved the meal. Thank you to all the teachers for making this day happen. Adam Pridgeon From the Teachers: A great big thank you to Floriana Lamboa who gave her help and support above and beyond, with the clean up that followed on from a successful day’s cooking. Thanks to all the students who participated and for your excellent conduct throughout.

9 Ways to a Resilient Child Author: Justin Coulson Raising Kids Who'll Bounce Back from Adversity and Challenging Times Have you ever watched your child give up too quickly and easily, moaning 'I can't'. Perhaps your child resists going to school because they don't like their teacher or their friend rejected them. Maybe they failed in a sporting contest or an exam. One of the most frequent questions Kidspot parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson is asked is 'How can I help my child become resilient?' Friendship problems, bullying, physical changes and parenting styles are just some of the issues that can affect our children's ability to bounce back from difficulty and adapt to challenging situations. Helping our children develop resilience can have lifelong positive effects. 9 Ways to a Resilient Child will help parents enable their children to cope with the challenges that life throws at us all. Discover why winners aren't always grinners, the problems with common advice like 'Toughen up, princess', the negative impact of helicopter parenting, and how praise can harm instead of help. Understand both the protective and the risk factors affecting resilience for better or for worse. And uncover the psychological secrets that will build your child's ability to bounce back, stronger and more resilient than ever: from the ability to think flexibly, make safe and healthy choices, and exercise self-control, to the powerful impact of family, relationships, school and community. Dr. Coulson aims to bolster resilience - not just in our children, but also in ourselves. Because resilient parents are more likely to have resilient kids. -Publisher
