FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

7 February 2021

God Alone! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Let us conclude our reflection on the beauty and power of the Rosary by uniting it to the special Holy Year dedicated to St. Joseph, the Patron of the Universal Church. One way in which we can more fully celebrate the Year of St. Joseph is to include the Foster father of Jesus in our Rosary Meditations. Last week I mentioned St. Louis de Montfort as one of the greatest promoters of the Rosary. Among several methods which he recommended in praying the Rosary, he also counseled that we could incorporate meditating on other aspects of our faith connected with the mysteries of the Rosary. Thus, we could incor-porate St. Joseph while praying the Rosary. For example, while praying the first and second joyful mysteries of the Annunciation and the Visitation, we could also meditate on how Mary shared this news with St. Joseph and his response. While Mary visited Eliza-beth, we could also meditate on how Joseph was preparing his home to receive our Lady. One could even use the passages of Scripture connected with the message from the angel Gabriel: “Joseph, Son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her” (Mt. 1:20). In the presentation of Jesus, both Joseph and Mary brought their child to the Temple. In the Lumi-nous mystery of the Wedding at Cana, one could meditate on Je-sus’ remembrance of Joseph and Mary’s holy marriage. In the third luminous mystery concerning Jesus’ preaching of the King-dom, we could meditate on Joseph as a shining example of the Beatitudes “since he was a righteous man” (Mt. 1: 19). How Jesus must have often thought of Joseph while He was preaching to the crowds. In the glorious mystery of the Resurrection, we could im-agine St. Joseph awaiting with all the just, the arrival of His Son after His death on the cross, to lead them to Heaven. St. Louis’ point is that we can connect other mysteries of our faith to the life our Lord and our Lady. We must let the Holy Spirit guide us in our meditations of the Rosary.

Finally, there are two more ways we can connect the praying of the Rosary with the Year of St. Joseph. First, in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae St. John Paul II writes, “The Rosary is then ended with a prayer for the intentions of the Pope, as if to expand the vision of the one praying to embrace all the needs of the Church. It is precisely in order to encourage this ecclesial dimension of the Rosary that the Church has seen fit to grant indulgences to those who recite it with the required dispositions” (37). Since St. Joseph is the Protector of the Church universal, it is fitting that we should pray for the Holy Father and for our own Bishop and their intentions. In this way, we are recognizing that under the shel-ter of St. Joseph, we are part of a larger family, the mystical Body of Christ. Second, let us add the prayer to St. Joseph which was composed by Pope Leo XIII and who asked in his 1889 encyclical Quamquam pluries, that we add this prayer to the end of the Rosary, especially in the month of October. The prayer may be found on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/prayers/prayer-to-st-joseph-after-rosary. As Pope Leo wrote, “Now the divine house which Joseph ruled with the authority of a father, contained within its limits the scarce-born Church. And for such reasons the Blessed Patriarch looks upon the multi-tude of Christians who make up the Church as confided specially to his trust - this limitless family spread over the earth, over which, because he is the spouse of Mary and the Father of Jesus Christ he holds, as it were, a paternal authority. It is, then, natural and worthy that as the Blessed Joseph ministered to all the needs of the family at Nazareth and girt it about with his protection, he should now cover with the cloak of his heavenly patronage and defend the Church of Jesus Christ” (3).

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the in-heritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influ-ence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from dead-ly peril, so now protect God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adver-sity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant pro-tection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holi-ness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.
