South Carolina Black History fact???
The Dixie Hummingbirds got their start in the Upstate of South Carolina (Greenville, SC.) back in 1928. The group was founded by James B. Davis and his classmates. They started out singing in local churches and toured SC singing. The instrumental lead singer of the group, Ira Tucker joined the group in 1938 at the age of 13. It was his influence that brought the energetic showmanship to the group (running through the aisles, jumping off stage, etc.). The group relocated to Philadelphia, PA in the 1940’s.
The group has sang with many music industry legends (Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, etc.). They were also influential on many famous artist, such as Jackie Wilson and James Brown.
In 2003, the Hummingbirds were the subject of an award winning book about their career. The book was entitled, Great God A’Mighty! The Dixie Hummingbirds Celebrating the Rise of Soul Gospel Music.
The Dixie Hummingbirds won four Grammy Awards (2007, 2000, 1994 and 1973). They were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for their song “Amazing Grace” recorded in 1946, inducted in 2000.
The Dixie Hummingbirds roots started in the Upstate of South Carolina, many years ago, but their legacy lives on. Its often stated, its not where you are from, but where you are going. Without your starting point, where you are going would have never been possible. Lets Celebrate Christian Black History and Christian Black History from the Upstate of South Carolina.
