Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione

On challenge of facing Florida State“It’s a big challenge. They’ve got five bonafide NFL prospects, and 16 possibles. We’re playing a very very good football team that’s won 29 of their last 30 games, three confer-ence championships in the ACC, played in the national championships game and won it two years ago, was in the final four last year. We’re not playing just a great team, we’re playing a great program.”

On state of the team heading into opener“There’s not any area we haven’t gotten better at. We haven’t scrimmaged much this fall, which we don’t. We probably scrimmaged about 350-375 plays in the spring. Hopefully we’ll tackle well. I think we’re getting in good position to tackle well. We’ve got a good un-derstanding of what we’re trying to do.

On trying to eliminate mistakes“As you’ve heard me say, sometimes you meet the enemy in the first game and the en-emy is you. We don’t want to be the enemy in this game. We want the enemy to be Florida State. We don’t want to beat ourselves. We’re going to play smart.”

On replacing two NFL draft picks“I think Tim Gay and David Mims, Rusmin Nikocevic have certainly stepped up along with Damani Alexcee. Those guys are prob-ably the leaders on the defensive side of the ball right now. Trey McGowan certainly fits into that category. I’m hopeful the collective group can offset the loss of Craig [Mager] and David [Mayo].”

Players

Texas State cornerback David MimsOn focus of the players“It’s a different focus. We’ve been going through fall camp and the grind. We’ve been going against each other, but now it’s game week so it’s time for us to switch focus to our first op-ponent of the season which is Florida State and we’re all excited to play. Everyone is just ready to go.

On trying to validate his preseason accolades“It’s somewhere in my mind. My biggest focus, though, is to just go out and do what I do. Just have fun and compete.”

On what the team has to do in Tallahassee“The thing I feel like we’re going to have to come out and no one is going to have to be like a super man or try to do more than what they’re capable of. Everybody do their 1/11th and try to make plays happen.”

Texas State quarterback Tyler JonesOn state of team going into Florida State “Everybody is excited. We’re pumped to be able to play in front of 80-90,000 fans and everyone is looking forward to it.

On how the offense has improved throughout training camp“I think we’ve gotten the plays down. I think we came off a little rusty from August 7th. Of course everybody is going to be when you start camp, but everybody’s gotten the rhythm of things and gotten in the flow of the game.

On how he’s looking to improve this year“I think just managing the game. Doing my 1/11th, continuing to lead the team and doing my role as the quarterback of the team.”
