There is more to your job than wins and losses. Hopefully, you have had a huge impact on each and every one of your players. In a lot of cases, you may not even recognize that impact right now. However, a few years from nowor perhaps many years from nowone of your players will express how you affected their life in a positive way. Thats a reward unlike any other. Second, I would like to address those who were fortunate to qualify for the playoffs. Please pay attention to what I wrote in the preceding paragraph. I hope, too, that you have had a positive impact on your players. Also, congratulations on your fine season thus far. There is nothing like the excitement of finding gym sites, negotiating, preparing for that next opponent, and playing post- season games. I wish each of you luck in advancing further and look forward to seeing you at the State Tournament hopefully coaching your team. Greetings Everyone,

By the time this message is printed and delivered, playoff games will be in full swing and we should be close to the State Tour-nament for both boys and girls. First, I would like to address those coaches who did not qualify for a playoff spot. Do not be disheartened. Please remember what I have said on more than one occasion this year. There is more to your job than wins and losses. Hopefully, you have had a huge impact on each and every one of your players. In a lot of cases, you may not even recognize that impact right now. However, a few years from now…or perhaps many years from now…one of your players will express how you affected their life in a positive way. That’s a reward unlike any other. Second, I would like to address those who were fortunate to qualify for the playoffs. Please pay attention to what I wrote in the preceding paragraph. I hope, too, that you have had a positive impact on your players. Also, congratulations on your fine season thus far. There is nothing like the excitement of finding gym sites, negotiating, preparing for that next opponent, and playing post-season games. I wish each of you luck in advancing further and look forward to seeing you at the State Tournament…hopefully coaching your team. Just as I ended my last message, I’d like to remind everyone the importance of our membership registration. It’s not too late to register. A Great Family Needs Our Help

JACKETS: Here to Fight

Meridian High School hosted a Coaches vs. Cancer game on January 20, 2017. Both girls and boys varsity players went out in the community and collected donations

to donate to St. Jude's Hospital. T-shirts were sold and the cheerleaders took donations from fans during the games that Friday. Nearly $2,100 was raised to benefit this great

organization. Congratulations to the Jackets for conducting such a successful fundraiser that benefits such a good cause. The teams at Meridian are something of which their

community can be proud and they set an excellent example for teams across the state of Texas. If your teams organize a fundraiser, please send your pictures and details to TABC so we can include your story in the next newsletter.

Every true fan of Texas basketball knows of the Lombard family and their impact on Texas girls basketball. Tate, Joe's son, is the head gir ls’ basketball coach at Wall. He and his wife are expect-ing a baby boy in April and they have found out he will have some serious heart issues. This is the latest from Tate: Paige and I wanted to update everyone on our ap-pointment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The doctors informed us of a few more concerns with our baby’s heart than we originally had heard in San Antonio. They are going to closely monitor his de-velopment and decide what all steps to be taken next. Paige and I will be traveling to Houston weekly. We still have a lot of questions that were left unanswered on our last trip, but hopefully we will understand more and more with each visit. We appre-ciate all of the support and prayers that you all have sent us this last week. Thank you so much! We know to trust God in all things even though we lack the under-standing. Once again I ask for continued prayers for our family and team of doctors with the following specific requests in mind: narrow aorta, scar tissue in left ven-tricle, mitral valve development, travel and rest. Angela Land has created a “Go Fund Me” account to help Tate and Paige with their travel and medical expenses. Please share with as many people as possible. This great family needs our help. Please continue to pray for the Lombard’s and their doctors. #LoveBabyLombard

Alief- Hastings Gym Named for Rick Sherley On Tuesday night, February 7, 2017 the Alief ISD officially named the Alief-Hastings north gym the Rick Sherley Gymnasium. Coach Sherley was the varisty boys’

basketball coach at Alief-Hastings for 25 years and built the Bears into a powerhouse. His offensive and defensive systems along with many of the practice drills that he de-

veloped to simulate game situations are being used by high school coaches across Texas and several college coaches from coast to coast. Coach Sherley averaged 26 wins per

season during his 25 years at Hastings. Numerous banners have been hung commemo-rating his teams’ success in the playoffs. Rick Sherley left Hastings in 2002 to become the executive director of TABC. Several hundred of Coach Sherley’s friends, family and

former players turned out for the ceremony that took place prior the boys’ varsity game between Alief-Hastings and Alief-Taylor. Two Hastings coaches, Darrell Collins and

Chad Harris, former Hastings coach and Hastings alumnus, Bob Wall, and two of Coach Sherley’s former players, Al Coleman and Preston Ivory each shared comments

honoring Coach Sherley. Congratulations to Coach Rick Sherley on an honor well de-served.

TABC Roundball Roundup—Page 7

Scott Barrett, the boys coach at Huffman Hargrave has them on a roll. In his 5 years as head coach the Falcons are 113-42 making the playoffs each year. In the school’s history they had made 4 total playoffs and never in consecutive years. They have also been district champions for the past 2 years. It had been 40 years since their last district championship. Huffman Hargrave broke into the TABC top 25 two weeks ago and are preparing for the playoffs. Coach Barrett played high school ball at Bryan and in college for TCU with coaching stops at George JH, Brenham HS, Hastings HS and Tidehaven before coming to Huffman. ********************************************************************************************************* Mason Garrett of the Chapel Hill Lady Devils made her 100th three point field goal for the season in early February. Mason is the daughter of Chapel Hill girls coach Matt Garrett and is only a freshman, so look for many more as the Lady Devils add to her totals in the playoffs. ********************************************************************************************************* Kendric Davis of Houston Sam Houston sprained his ankle during a district loss to Bellaire which ties the two top 5 teams for the district lead. Bruce Glover is the Bellaire coach and Ralph Barreras leads the defending regional champion Tigers. Kendric returned later in the week to score 29 points and keep Sam tied for first going into the playoffs. ********************************************************************************************************* Jalen Amos of South Houston boys made the game winning shot against LaPorte as he scored 17 points in the 49-48 win. He followed that with 22 points in a district clinching win for Coach Patrick McCoy. It was only the third district championship in school history for the Trojans. ********************************************************************************************************* Jay Jay Chandler of Cinco Ranch poured in 38 points and snagged 13 rebounds against district rival Tompkins creating a 3 way tie for the district lead with one game to go from among Strake Jesuit (Dominic Amorosa), Tompkins (Bobby Sanders) and Cinco Ranch (Neil King). All three have clinched the playoffs and will jockey for seeding. ********************************************************************************************************* Claude girls coach Jason Cooper and his family were recently involved in a bad auto accident. He and his son Jonathan (8) both have broken bones and the rest of the family including his wife and daughter Jenna, who plays for the Lady Mustangs sustained scrapes, bruises and burns. Jonathan has missed 3 weeks of school as the family continues to heal. On February 1 Jonathan re-ceived a gift box and get well card signed by the entire team from Panhandle, one of the Lady Stangs most hated rivals. Coach Rob Schmucker and the Lady Pantherettes reached out to a family and young man even with the fierce r ivalry in its most heated time of year. Both teams have been top 5 state ranked in class 2A all season. A great example to each of us and a class act both on and off the court. ********************************************************************************************************* The Canadian boys of district 1-3A sewed up another district championship with 23 points from Matthew Lynch (7 for 10 from beyond the arc) and 16 assists from Cameron Copley. The Wildcats of Coach Andy Copley are back to back state champs in class 2A. Due to a late start from football Canadian is 18-2 and will try to add to their resume with a 3A state championship. They are currently # 11 in the state. ********************************************************************************************************* David Azore of Clear Brook boys broke the school scoring record as he reached 2084 points and counting going into the playoffs. He passed the record with a 45 point night against Alvin and their leading scorer Savion Flagg who had 41 in the same game. The Clear Brook coach is Christian Thompson and John Oliverio is the Alvin coach. ********************************************************************************************************* Little Elm boys coach Rusty Segler has put together a memorable season with more to come in the Lobos bright future. LE was picked to fight for a playoff spot in tough district 15-5A which includes McKinney North, Prosper, The Colony and Newman-Smith. All won 20 or more games a year ago. Little Elm is led by a freshman and two juniors among 4 starters and 7 lettermen and has gone through district undefeated and four games ahead of the pack. The Lobos are 28-4 entering the playoffs and ranked #2 in class 5A. Along the way, Coach Segler picked up career win # 600. ********************************************************************************************************* Riley Dewitz scored 61 points in a game against 5A Lumberton in non-district action. He plays for 3A Pollok Central and is coached by his father Mike Dewitz. ********************************************************************************************************* Two of the free throw leaders on Max Preps are Lauren Heard of Denton Guyer (229 made) and on the boys side Ajare Sanni of Clear Lake ((248 made). The Denton Guyer girls are coached by Aimee Kilgore and the Clear Lake boys are led by Tommy Pend-ers. Both team and individual free throw leaders will be awarded in each class after the season. Make sure your stats are on Max Preps when your season ends. ********************************************************************************************************* Like the Free throw leaders listed above here are two of the 3 point field goal leaders at present. Katlyn Ghavidel of Boerne Champion (124 made) is among the girls leaders and Pierce Hellums of Tomball Concordia Lutheran is a boys leader (123). Kat-lyn is coached by Marsha Hammond and Pierce is coached by Bill Honeck. Same instructions as above. ********************************************************************************************************* The two leading scorers in the state according to Max Preps are Alexis Morris of Beaumont Legacy Christian coached by Yan-nick Denson. She is averaging 31.5 points per game going into the TAPPS playoffs. Savion Flagg of Alvin leads the boys with 31.1 points a game. The Yellow Jackets of Coach John Olivario have completed their season. Savion will play for the Longhorns next year.
