Laredo Hospitals Support TAMIU

Laredo hospitals have provided solid support to TAMIU’s Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing since it opened its doors in 1994. Nursing students perform their clinical rotations at Laredo Medical Center, Doctor’s Hospital, Laredo Specialty Hospital, and other locations. For the past four years, the three hospitals have provided combined gifts totaling $345,000 for full faculty support. This in turn helps TAMIU admit more students to the nursing program.

A Theatre Scene at TAMIU

A partnership between TAMIU and the Laredo Theater Guild International provides University students an opportunity to perform in a theatre production while the community experiences musicals and dramas such as “Man of La Mancha,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Best Man” at the University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre. Founded by Joe Arciniega, Sammy Johnson, Hortense Offerle and TAMIU President Dr. Ray Keck, the LTGI has helped TAMIU become an arts and cultural destination for Laredo.

Pictured from left to right are Joe Arciniega as Don Quijote and Raúl Staggs as his squire Sancho Panza.

Engineering ConnectionA partnership between Texas A&M International University and the Texas A&M University Dwight Look College of Engineering

allows students who major in engineering to take the first two years of required courses at TAMIU and transfer to Texas A&M in their junior year. Students attend a one-week summer camp in College Station between their freshman and sophomore year. Instrumental in setting up this connection was Henry “Bartell” Zachry, a 1954 graduate of Texas A&M in civil engineering and chairman of Zachry Construction Corp. He also donated $50,000 for the summer camps and challenged others to match it. The first to do so were philanthropists Carroll Summers, Gary Leyendecker, and Blackstone Dilworth. Providing tuition and fee scholarships to 10 students each year is the A. R. and Maria J. Sanchez Family Foundation.

World-Class Concerts on Campus

The innovative collaboration linking TAMIU with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra and Laredo Community College allows the University community and visitors alike to enjoy world-class concerts at the University’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts. Season after season, the LPO reaches new heights of success and audience following under the direction of Brendan Townsend, TAMIU associate professor of music, and a 2007 ASCAP Award winner for Innovative Programming.

Message from the President

Your university: the Measure of Forty

For poets and philosophers, historians and intellectuals, momentous experiences come in units of forty. A quick survey of Famous 40s suggests which experiences demand the storied number. Testing one’s strength and cleansing the soul can take forty days-Jesus’ time in the

wilderness before beginning public life-or forty years-the Hebrews’ time in the desert before entering the Promised Land. “Los cuarenta días” teach patience to married couples following the birth of a child. To ensure adequate preparation, both Advent and Lent contain forty days.

The number may also imply lots of time passing: forty days and forty nights of rain to float Noah’s arc and eliminate everything else. And forty (or successive groups of forty) can signal moments of fulfillment, of maturity, of readiness for a new awakening: Muhammed was forty when he received the first revelations from the angel Gabriel. Moses was forty when he fled Egypt to live in the land of Midian, eighty when he saw and heard the burning bush, one hundred twenty when he died on Mt. Nebo in sight of the promised land.

Texas A&M International University (then Texas A&I University-Laredo) opened its doors in September, 1970, the first upper-level institution in the State. How did these first forty get going? Evolve? Where are we now? When in 1973 he put our story together for the accreditors, former president Dr. Billy F. Cowart imagined change as our primary goal, our license to continue into the future, writing:

We... intend the tale to go on as long as we can help to produce useful change in the thinking, the knowledge, the behavior, and the feelings of the students in South Texas.

When in February, 1994 she came to break ground for our first building, Governor Ann Richards envisioned an institution preparing our young people “for any challenge and any change that comes their way.” At that time, Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock reminded us of how far we have come and how bright the future, saying: “No longer are the young people of South Texas shackled with an outdated and outmoded system of higher education.”

Heritage Society Cumulative Giving 1979-2010Dr. Cowart, Governor Ann Richards, and Lieutenant

Governor Bob Bullock were not offering cheerful meliorisms without strategies for battle. Each inaugurated succeeding eras of herculean effort. The most recent fruit of those continuing labors came on September 9, 2010, as Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst joined Senator Judith Zaffirini to cut the ribbon for our newest building, the University Success Center.

The Senator recounted how during his seven years as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Dewhurst has consistently championed growth and expansion for the University in Laredo. And Mr. Dewhurst repeated the poetic vision he articulated at the time he was named Mr. South Texas: “I want to see the landscape of South Texas painted with the dreams of its children.” In securing funding for the University Success Center, our Senator and our Lieutenant Governor place a color-rich palette and brushes in the hands of young South Texans.

Our story begins as one of vast imaginings: challenge, change, new life. For many of these first forty

years, lawmakers and citizens have lifted us forward, confident in the promise that expanded education brings expanded life. Today, as we look around the campus, as we read in U.S. News and World Report how highly fellow teachers and counselors value this University, we realize that we are now fully formed. We will grow much, much more. Programs such as engineering will expand our offerings; badly needed new buildings will continue to rise. But a walk on these grounds leads visitors through a campus stunningly beautiful, intelligently planned, wisely cared for, in the first bloom of youthful maturity.

Forty years have passed. The bush burns brightly, the angel beckons. Like Moses and Muhammed at forty, our University has now come of age, equipped to fulfill the aspirations of those who first laid it out and saw it through the first decades of robust growth. When asked what the future holds for Laredo’s university, Senator Zaffirini speaks for all of us when she says: “We have just begun!”

Conquering Heights

The Texas A&M University System, the Coordinating Board, and the State of Texas continue to look closely at four performance measures: growth, retention, graduation rates, and sponsored research. Record high enrollment figures make us proud. Retention rates increased from last year, graduation percentages show steady progress and sponsored research remains a top priority. Despite a cut in state appropriations, TAMIU was rated one of the best regional universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Regardless of the economic situation, the culture of giving remains strong.

Summer Weight Control Research Camp May Contribute to Reducing Obesity Issues in Laredo

Dr. Kyung-Shin Park, assistant professor of education, conducted an eight-week Weight Control Summer Camp at Texas A&M International University this summer for a study that may contribute to reducing obesity issues for children and youth in Laredo.

The Camp was designed to manage campers’ body weight, introduce a healthier lifestyle and eventually prevent obesity permanently. Among 26 campers aged 8 to 16 years, 21 students participated in data collection and followed a program that included martial arts, recreational activities, aerobics and strength training as well as lectures focusing on nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle.

It was found that an eight-week camp significantly reduced the percentage of body fat, waist and hip size. Additionally, it improved flexibility, muscle strength, and cardiovascular function, Dr. Park said.

“Previous studies reported that children gain most extra weight during summer break due to physical inactivity and an increase in food intake,” he explained.

“Results of this summer camp study may contribute to reducing obesity issues in Laredo,” Park said, “Blood samples collected will be analyzed to investigate changes in lipid profile, markers of obesity and pro-inflammatory cytokines. To see how long campers can maintain changes, a one-year follow-up data collection will be held in next year,“ he said.

Inspiring Innovation

Dr. Michael Kidd, assistant professor of biology, is answering one of the most fundamental evolutionary questions: How do females choose a mate? The cichlid fishes of Africa’s Great Lakes provide a prime opportunity to study this process. Dr. Kidd is studying how hormones alter gene expression, causing females to overwhelmingly

Dr. David Beck, assistant professor of microbiology, is bridging the gap between scientific research and public health by partnering with the Laredo Health Department to determine the prevalence of tick-borne diseases in Webb County. Amblyomma cajennense, Dr. Beck’s research focus, is the dominant tick in South Texas. It feeds aggressively on humans, he explained. A. cajennense is known to be a vector of numerous diseases. Very little is known about the disease prevalence of A. cajennense in the United States, but Dr. Beck’s research has already detected several bacteria species in tick samples collected over five years.

His research is supported by the University Research Development Award.

choose to spawn with larger males. Dr. Kidd’s lab has also found that males increase sexual displays the day prior to spawning, suggesting the ability to detect female ovulation. His work will help to address important questions relating to vertebrate evolution and most importantly, to human health and well being.

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Public Health

Dr. Leonel Prieto, assistant professor of management, is currently conducting research on leadership and entrepreneurship to determine universal and contextual leadership behaviors in an international framework and the interplay between individual and contextual factors in entrepreneurial activity. In order to do so, he collects and analyzes data using multiple methodologies from the U.S., México, China and other countries. Dr. Prieto’s research will help train future leaders and students of leadership and also contribute towards a better understanding of leadership and entrepreneurship.

TAMIU’s Jorge Haynes Baseball Field Named After Beloved Laredo Leader, Coach

Texas A&M International University’s baseball program took a major step forward with the dedication of the Jorge Haynes Baseball Field May 1. The biggest crowd of the season attended to pay tribute to the late community leader and Laredo baseball coach Jorge Haynes. His family was invited to watch the Dustdevils end their 2010 campaign with a doubleheader against Heartland Conference rival St. Mary’s.

The Jorge Haynes Baseball Field provides bleacher seating for 600 fans with a contemporary press box. It is already considered one of the finest baseball facilities in the Heartland Conference.

Texas A&M International University junior men’s soccer player Alejandro “Alex” De la Fuente has worked hard to meet the ideal definition of student-athlete. Besides being a key member of the TAMIU soccer team, De la Fuente’s dedication in the classroom has led to some exciting opportunities.

De la Fuente was one of six TAMIU students, and the only student-athlete, to participate in the Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI) at Harvard University this summer. The LLI

was hosted by the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Established to help develop the next generation of Latino leaders, the LLI offered classroom sessions, presentations from distinguished leaders and networking opportunities.

A key initiative that has contributed to the enriching first year experience of freshmen students at Texas A&M International University has been the “Reading the Globe” common read. All incoming freshmen read a book written by a contemporary author on an international topic.

The book is discussed in the students’ freshman seminar class and then the author visits TAMIU’s campus to speak to freshmen about his or her experiences. Students are invited to participate in an essay competition to vie for a chance to travel to the country in which the book is set. A total of 15 students is chosen for a life-altering opportunity to participate in an educational travel experience. Students thus far have traveled to Poland and Ghana, and in Spring 2011, 15 freshmen will be traveling to Cambodia, where this year’s selection, “The Road to Lost Innocence,” is set.

In June, a group of six Texas A&M International University students participated in a highly selective Latino leadership program organized by the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The Harvard Latino Leadership Initiative brings young Latino student leaders from across the country to Harvard University for an intensive, week-long leadership experience designed to develop the rising generation of Latino leaders.

TAMIU students who participated in the Initiative were (left to right): Alejandro De la Fuente, Cynthia De La Miyar, Andrea Beattie, José Ramón Lara, Jennifer González and Arlyn Martínez.
