Immigration Reform Remix...

We had a great turn out this past Saturday at our Oct. 5th actionevents, marching in unison with Pro-Immigration Reform supportersfrom over 90 cities across the country! Unfortunately, the governmentshutdown continues to impede democratic progress, despite supportfrom 26 pro-reform House Republicans who have publicly said theysupport immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

We need to keep the pressure on the GOP Leadership to SponsorHR15 or demand that they produce their own proposal, for a solutionto bring our nation's 11 million immigrants out of the shadows and fixour out-dated immigration system.

This week, America's Voice reported from Washington, D.C., thatover 200 activists and eight Members of Congress were arrested in anact of non-violent civil disobedience at a pro-immigration reform rallyon the National Mall, which drew over 10,000 people. These eventshelped to underscore the urgent need for House Republicanleadership to take concrete action to ensure that the a vote onimmigration reform is brought to the House floor this year. As the NewYork Times reported, several "House Republicans - including MarioDiaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, both of Florida, and JeffDenham and David Valadao, both of California - appeared at the rallyto call for bipartisan efforts to pass an immigration overhaul."

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director ofAmerica's Voice:

"Lending support at rallies and delivering speeches are importantmeasures of support, but only if followed and complemented by takingreal action and expending real political capital."

The stakes for the GOP are high. The longer that HouseRepublicans delays, the greater the danger for the Republican Party'sbrand image among Latino voters. Recent analysis fromABC/Univision titled, "GOP Hispanic Outreach Stalls," noted that"Hispanic voters appear as alienated by the GOP as ever...amid thefight over immigration reform, Hispanics have become increasinglynegative toward the GOP. Almost two-thirds of Hispanics say theyfeel closer to the Democratic Party than they have in the past, whileless than three in ten say the same about the Republican Party,

according to a recent poll by the non-profit Public Religion ResearchInstitute. Almost half of the opinions Hispanics volunteered about theGOP were negative, while only one in ten were positive."

Moreover, the longer immigration reform is on hold in the House,the greater the likelihood that the shrill and anti-immigrant Rep. SteveKing (R-IA) and his face of the Party will define the GOP to Latino
