Test Drive 1

See the benefits of DiskeeperDiskeeper 2008 with InvisiTasking technology is designed to be an automatic defragmenter. While Diskeeper still allows manual defragmentation, this is not the way the product is intended to be used, nor the way our customers will typically use it. To best understand the advantages of fully automatic operation, Diskeeper 2008 should be installed and allowed to run in its default configuration for several days.

You will achieve the most dramatic results if you test on a system that has not been defragmented for an extended period of time. Typically, a Windows® system that relies on the built-in defragmenter will yield dramatic results, as the Windows defragmenter can only be run manually.

Tips to See Performance Gains:1. The best way to see performance gains is to take a “before snapshot” of your drive(s)

before having Diskeeper run automatically. To do this, during installation, you will need to uncheck the box that asks you to “Enable Automatic Defragmentation on all volumes on this computer” (if you have already fully installed your trialware, simply analyze your volumes as soon as possible following installation).

2. After installing Diskeeper 2008, analyze each test volume and save the results to establish a baseline.

3. Directly after analyzing each test volume, view the drive maps that pop up. The File Performance map is far more important than File Structure map. A “pretty drive map” doesn’t necessarily correspond to maximum performance in all cases. Save the results from the Volume Maps by clicking on the Save button.

4. Next, click on the Job Report tab back at the top. Save these results also by clicking on the Save button.

the main Diskeeper user interface. Select Automatic Defragmentation.

6. From the Properties menu that appears, select your volumes, then check the box to “Enable Automatic Defragmentation on the selected volumes.” This will enable Diskeeper to begin running completely automatically and invisibly in the background.

7. Run a Boot-Time Defragmentation on each test volume to defragment the Master File Table and paging files. On Windows XP and later, Frag Shield® 2.0, new in Diskeeper 2008, automatically defragments the MFT online without the need to run a boot time defragmentation.

Test Drive8. Allow Diskeeper 2008 to run automatically for several days on an actively used system.

InvisiTasking ensures that Diskeeper is operating in the background with zero overhead. Each day, check the Dashboard tab to review the Job Logs and the graphs in the History Tab.

9. After a few days have gone by (a week is optimal), come back to the Diskeeper user interface and do another analysis of the volume(s) that have been automatically defragmented by Diskeeper (start with step #2).

When done, check the visual differences you should see in the colored drive maps, and also the differences in statistics such as the Access Times and File Fragmentation statistics (see examples below).

These reports will enable you to see the value of having Diskeeper on every system you manage. You will see how Diskeeper maintains optimal system performance, speed and

reliability—systems that are free of the debilitating affects of fragmentation.

Advanced TestingIt requires more work to test a product that is designed to operate transparently in the background. However, due to the pioneering nature of the InvisiTasking technology, the results of background testing will be extremely interesting to many readers.

Real world testing scenarios that show Diskeeper running invisibly could include:• Launch applications with Diskeeper running in automatic mode and without

Diskeeper running.• Burn CDs with Diskeeper running in automatic mode and without Diskeeper running.• Perform benchmark tests using commercially available benchmarking software with

Diskeeper running in automatic mode and without Diskeeper running.

It might be of interest to run these tests on a fragmented drive, where Diskeeper would be actively eliminating fragmentation, and then run them on a freshly defragmented system where the tested operations themselves do not access any fragmented files. These tests would illustrate that when Diskeeper is running, a system always runs as fast as or faster than when Diskeeper is disabled.
