Dear Adventurers, I invite you to explore with me the fa-bled and exotic land of India, full of contrasts and color, with over 1.2 mil-lion square miles of land and 1.2 billion people, a country dating back 5,000 years, at once sophisticated and impov-erished, ancient and modern, mystical and earthy. India is too much to absorb in one trip, but we shall give you a sample of its culture, tem-ples, topography, and people as we journey from the predomi-nantly Hindu north to the Catholic South to Goa. We Francis-cans first came to India in 1255, only 15 years after the death of St. Francis. We were there on the shores to welcome St. Francis Xavier in 1550 as he disembarked to begin his life of evangelization. This trip is a long and physically challenging one. It is long because of the international flight and the six internal flights to get to our destinations without long bus rides. It is physi-cally challenging since there is a good deal of walking, scal-ing steps, and navigating broken down sidewalks. In spite of the obstacles, this trip will leave you breathless and amazed for the sheer grandeur of the country's treasures. I have trav-eled to many parts of India before. I have planned a repre-sentative sample of the country for you which includes all that you see in the itinerary as well as a visit with our Franciscans in Bangalore and in Mumbai who will show us the biggest slum in all of Asia. I hope to take only 25. I encourage you to be one of the ad-venturesome ones among them!

Fr. Mario
