Officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link.
Cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts.
Links the Bandra (Western suburb) and Worli ( South Mumbai).
Inaugurated on June 30 , 2009.
Among the most complex & advanced construction projects ever in India.

HISTORY Mahim Causeway was the only link connecting westernsuburbs to island
city of Mumbai, making it highlycongested during the peak hours .
Vehicular traffic admeasuring about 120,000 PCUtravels on the Mahim causeway everyday and during peak hours and it takes about forty minutes to travelfrom Mahim causeway to Worli, a distance of about 8km.

Estimated Cost : ₹ 665.81 Cr Actual Cost : ₹ 1653.25 Cr
The Increament in project cost was due to payments of escalation 213 ₹Cr on account of inordinate delay in completion (61 months ) .
New technical changes in the bridge at the behest of new consultant 70 Cr ₹.
Contractor for delay in award of work 125 Cr .₹
Interest liability due to delayed completion 230 Cr .₹

PIERS : The span between the piers is 50 maters .
This distance arrived by considering optimization between foundation cost Vs. superstructure cost .
If the piers are wide apart then foundation cost comes down , but the superstructure becomes heavier and its cost goes up .
Moreover, more number of piers provide better wind resistance .

CABLE WIRE Are also known as ‘ Parallel Wire Stay Cables ’.
Manufactured by “Shanghai Pujiang Cable Co. Ltd” China .
Each cable consists a group of steel wires ( 6 wires ) .
Each steel wire has a diameter 7mm with a breaking limit of 6.28 Tones.
Group of these wires was packed in two layers of HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) material .

Highly uneven and variable foundation bed even for plane area of one pile .
The maritime Board does not allow marine traffic in monsoon season . Thus work was halted Mid-May only to re-commence in October . Effectively reducing the work schedule to only seven month in a year .
Needed for extra steel trusses , further experts .
Delay due to change in design of stray Cable .
