MRS FULLERTON’S TIPS

Like a lot of other parents, teaching my child from home is new to me.

Since I have started, I have found a few things that have helped make

it easier. I am not an expert but I am hoping that by sharing some of

my ideas it may help you. For those of you who don’t know, I have a 6

year old son, Henry and a 3 year old daughter, Ivy. I also have one on

the way in 10 weeks! This is what has worked for me so far! Henry

and Ivy have enjoyed being my models ☺

TIP 1

Create a learning space. Having a set space creates an environment

that your child can identify as their mini classroom for now. You can

get your child to decorate the space. It also means that you can leave

it set up to use each day.

TIP 2

Create a flexible schedule. Most children like to know what the plan is

for the day. You can print or create some cards which can be arranged

to create a plan for your school day. Make sure your child knows it can

be changed just like school! I have attached a template that can be

printed to create a visual timetable. Students just need to add their

own pictures.

TIP 3

Get active! The more activities that you can do outside or through

moving the better! Being outside is great for all of our mental health

and with the change of scenery your child might not even know they

are learning. I would suggest an active brain break after each activity.

TIP 4

Don’t focus on the clock. Take your time on the activities your child is

enjoying. If the set activity leads you to another activity or researching

something then go with it. There is no set time that you need to spend

on a task. Henry recently became very interested in the Amazon and

spent as much time as he wanted finding information.

TIP 5

Have some fun! Make a song or logo for your home school. Henry has

made a chant all about our home school and is going to make a logo to

stick in his desk area.

ONLINE IDEAS

Online safety is extremely important and especially at the moment

with so many students accessing sites online. Here is a link to a

booklet about online safety advice that has some very useful tips:

https://www.esafety.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-04/aus-global-

parent-online-safety-advice_1.pdf

There are so many websites that are very helpful. Here are the links to

5 that can be used for kindergarten to year 6.

IDEA 1

National Geographic Kids

- Factual information

- Links to videos

- Students can collect information for an information report or

they could make a habitat for one of the animals they research

https://www.natgeokids.com/au/

IDEA 2

Cosmic Kids Yoga

- Yoga and stories to follow along with

- Short mindfulness activities that are great for brain breaks

- Students could have a go at creating some yoga moves for one

of their favourite story books

https://www.cosmickids.com/category/watch/

IDEA 3

Storyline Online

- Many stories that can be listened to

- Henry’s favourite is Arnie the Doughnut

- Students could make a poster to advertise their favourite book

IDEA 4

Behind the News

- Very good for the older years

- Students can listen to news stories and write down very

important points or have a go at creating their own news report

and filming

https://www.abc.net.au/btn/

IDEA 5

Scholastic

- A variety of books that can be downloaded and read

- Links to websites of their favourite books and authors

https://kids.scholastic.com/kids/home/

Wollondilly library also has many books and activities that can be

accessed during this time.

OFFLINE IDEAS

There are so many ideas online at the moment but here are 5 that I

have tried and tested and were fun!

IDEA 1

Create an obstacle course with chalk. This can be changed regularly

and the kids can even make them for each other. I made a key and

then Henry had to follow the markings on the ground. You can also

time children or get them to time each other and set challenges.

Students can also add symbols that represent different actions of their

choice.

IDEA 2

Go on a walk and collect leaves, flowers and sticks to make an

artwork. You could also make a list of items for students to find and

tick off a list. Students could also make a tally of how many of

different items they see and turn it into a graph.

Page 8: TERM TWO - Bargo€¦ · TIP 2 Create a flexible schedule. Most children like to know what the plan is for the day. You can print or create some cards which can be arranged to create

6

IDEA 3

Design and create their own board game or puzzle. Students may

choose to make a math’s game where questions have to be answered

correctly to move forward. They can make cards with instructions,

pieces that can be moved around the board and could even attempt

making their own dice.

IDEA 4

Make biscuits into words. Use the recipe below to make cookie dough.

Children can then shape the dough into letters and then words. These

can then be decorated and photographed.

Recipe: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/basic-butter-biscuit-

dough/6b73667c-24cc-4812-a4ab-0f600016e704

If you don’t have flour (it seems difficult to get sometimes) students

could use their body to make the alphabet and take photos. These

photos could be printed and then used to make sight words.

IDEA 5

Make a shopping list (can use catalogues or draw pictures) with

several products available to purchase. Get students to pick what they

want to buy and add it to their list. They can then add their products

together and figure out how much change they would get from a

specific amount of money. You could also get them to make a poster

to advertise one of their products.

I like going to school. It is part of my routine.

When I go to school, I get to see my teachers and my friends.

11

Sometimes I cannot go to school because it is temporarily

closed. This could be because there is an emergency, like a

bush fire, or it could be because there is a virus in the

community that could make me or my family sick.

It is good to stay at home to keep us healthy and safe. I

also get to spend more time with my family.

12

When school closes, it is to keep the students and teachers

safe. When my school closes, I need to change my routine.

My teacher will send me school work to do at home. Someone

at home will help me understand what I need to do.

If I need more help to do my work, I can contact my teacher

on Seesaw.

13

I can try my best when I am doing my work.

I will remember that I am continually learning and may not

get it right the first time.

I will just keep trying until I succeed.

14

If I am feeling sad, scared or anxious, or if I have a question

about what is happening, I can talk to an adult about my

feelings. I can also use other strategies like yoga or choosing

things to do that I enjoy.

I’m feeling anxious.

Can you help me calm

my feelings?

Of course!

Let’s do some of our

breathing activities

together.

I can’t meet up with my friends right now, but I can ask my

grown-ups to help me contact them by phone or to send them

a message or letter.

When it is safe to go back to school, I will be able to see

everyone again and continue learning with my teacher in our

classroom. My teachers and friends are looking forward to

seeing me again.
