Eight Year 9 pupils attended the Solutions for the Planet Regional Finals at the University of Leeds on Tuesday 8th May. The pupils were presenting their ‘Big Ideas’ to a panel of business experts. The ‘Ecos Cool’ team, made up of Ben Willis, David Morley, Shalom Guzete and Latifa Messiouri, were praised for their excellent concept to make schools more environmentally friendly. The team will be working hard to develop their ‘Big Idea’ in the coming weeks in preparation for the Grand Final at West Minster Palace in London on 11th July.

As you can see from the image of the first completed module, the primary building is starting to take shape. On 11th June, Portakabin will be delivering 4-6 modules to the Carr Manor site. Pupils and staff have visited Portakabin in York and were amazed to see the construction of our new building. High school pupils have had a chance to meet with some of the primary pupils that will be joining us in September. The Guiseley AFC / Carr Manor High School Youth Academy squad, who will be playing in the Football Conference Youth Alliance next season, recently visited Nethermoor. The team met members of the football club's management team. The photo shows the signed Academy players who will be starting Year 12 with us in September and the Guiseley Community and Youth Development Director, Phil Rogerson. The team has already secured sponsorship from Ace Cars but additional sponsors would be welcomed. Please contact Sarah Power on 0113 3368400 for more information.

Mrs Simpson and some Year 9 pupils played host to a group of Year 9 pupils and their teacher, from Tallinn in Estonia, a mere 1679 miles away from Carr Manor. They spent the day following a timetable, to see how an English school works and they were really impressed with the sports and music facilities. The school lunch was also highly praised. When it came time to leave the Estonian pupils did not want to go and said they wished they could stay here for good. The Year 9 buddies have been keeping in touch with their new friends via Facebook and who knows...maybe we will have a return visit one day!

Carr Manor High School is pleased to announce that we have been awarded with the Artsmark Award. This is an Arts Council England’s National Award to evaluate, celebrate and develop quality arts education. Only 15% of schools achieve this award and we are very proud to be one of them!

A group of talented pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9 have begun workshops for Carr Manor High School's contribution to the Shakespeare Schools Festival. The pupils involved have shown a great aptitude for improvisation and character work and will begin script work over the next few weeks. Certain pupils helped make buns and run a bun sale to raise money for the project, generating a profit of £120. In November the group will perform a half an hour adaptation of The Comedy of Errors at the Carriageworks in Leeds city centre. The pupils will have the chance to take part in a workshop delivered by a director from the National Theatre and will be performing alongside pupils from three other Leeds schools. Watch this space as you will be able to purchase tickets nearer the performance date.

Congratulations to all Year 9 pupils that attended the recent Adventure Trip. The trip was positive and rewarding and showed that our Year 9 pupils are responsible, independent and supportive. The majority of pupils attended a 2 ½ day trip to Herd Farm and were then joined by 11 other pupils for one of

the days. The pupils took part in high ropes challenges, went on the giant swing, learnt survival skills, did BMX

biking, completed an assault course, a night walk and the cube game.

The trip was aimed at improving pupil’s teamwork, independence and communication skills.

This term NEtWORKS Extended Services have been running a Family Sports Club on a Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 6:00pm based at Carr Manor High School. Families from the local community have been working together learning new sports, improving their fitness and most importantly, having fun. Each week there has been a range of sports on offer for the families to try, some of which have included: climbing, mini-tennis, badminton, table tennis, cricket, football, netball and many more. The format has worked really well and participants have had the opportunity to work individually, as a family and as a whole group. Due to popular demand, the Family Sports Club will continue for another 6 weeks after the June half term school holidays, with the first session starting on Wednesday 13th June 2012. These sessions will cost £15 per family for the 6 week block and will entitle you and your family, parents / carers and all your children (must be aged 6 years or above), to enjoy these 1 hour sessions every week until the summer school holidays.

For further information or to book a place for your family, please contact Chrisi Nicholson on 0113 3368410. We look forward to seeing more families at these sessions.

Year 11 pupils have now finished normal school lessons but will be returning for revision sessions and their GCSE examinations. Each pupil has received a personalised revision timetable and can continue to access support in school. The year group will celebrate their time at Carr Manor with a prom at the Park Plaza on Wednesday 20th June. Look out for the photos in the next edition of Term Times.

A huge congratulations to Matty Lee who won 2 gold and 2 silver medals in the British Junior Elite Championships recently. He has been selected to compete and represent the country at the Junior Youth International competition in Germany. Matty is now a member if the GB team and has received his full GB kit. Matty has also recently had a very successful competition in Dresden. His scores in both events have now qualified him a place on Team GB going to the Junior Europeans (Dresden is the

qualifying meet for that event) held in Gratz, Austria in July. Matty was also the only member of the Leeds contingent of Team GB going to Dresden, to bring back two medals.

Jack Dyche has recently visited Sweden, to play in the Lennart Johannsen trophy, with Leeds United Football Club. This is one of the most highly rated youth football tournaments in the world. He was playing in the Under 15 competition - a year above his own age group. Jack’s team managed to win through the group stages, after playing Sturm Graz (Austria), FC Kapa (Finland) and Staebeck Norway). They then played Espanol (Spain) in the semi-final, only to be beaten 4-0. The Spanish team were a very strong team and they went on to win the tournament outright. Well done Jack.
