a Public Holiday, Recreation Day, students will

return to school on Tuesday 6 November.

Kinmen County Trip

Yesterday, four students, Mrs Holloway and I

headed off to Taiwan and Kinmen County for the

next 8 days. Briar, Madeline, Elijah, Coby, Mrs

Holloway and I are extremely excited about the

trip and can’t wait to learn more about the culture of Kinmen County and continue to grow the

relationship between the two education

departments. We will try and keep the school

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued

2020 Ski Trip and Mainland Trip

As in 2019, we will be holding two options for the Ski Trip to Mt Hotham next year. There will be a Seven

Day Ski Trip and a Twelve Day ski trip for Grade 9 and 10 students to choose from. The cost will be

approximately $1500 for the Seven Day and $2100 for the Twelve Day. I held a meeting with students on

Tuesday and forms were handed out. If your child missed the meeting and they are interested in attending

the trip, they will be able to collect an information letter from the office.

The staff organising our Mainland/AFL trip are finalising the itinerary and agenda. They will be advertising a

meeting soon, so parents, guardians and students are aware of the itinerary and cost of the trip. It is

wonderful that students are able to experience trips to the mainland with their friends and peers and I

thank all the staff who make these trips available for students.

2020 Leadership Opportunities

At the end of Term 3, 39 students from our Grade 9 student body have nominated themselves for our

2020 Leadership Team and students from Grade 8 are currently thinking about nominating to be a Student

Representative on our School Association. One of our school values is resilience, and I would like to

congratulate the students who have been resilient and jumped out of their ‘comfort zone’ by placing their

name forward, knowing that they may not be elected. Today, Mrs Heazlewood and the Health and Physical

Education Team outlined the role of House Captains and the application process for this. Interested Grade

9 students attended the meeting, so they could become more informed about what the role entails and how

they can nominate for this leadership opportunity. Through our Personal Interest subjects, there will be

opportunities for students in Grade 9 and 10 to be Support Leaders, these roles include, Literacy Support

Leaders, Numeracy Support Leaders, Learning for Life Leaders and ECO Team Leaders. Mrs Forbes, Mr

Oliver and Mr Karafilis will provide more information to students on these opportunities later this term.

Department of Education Awards

On Monday afternoon, the Minister for Education and Department of Education representatives

acknowledged students from across the North West Coast who have excelled in their academic growth or

have achieved outstanding results across their Australian Curriculum Subjects and NAPLAN. It was

extremely pleasing that five students from Latrobe High received an award. A huge congratulations to

Fabian, Taylor, Ashley, Jaikira and Chloe who received an award. To end the award ceremony, it was

a highlight to have Fabian perform ’Demelza’ to the audience on the tenor horn. He was composed,

confident, and highly skilful in the way that he captivated the audience. Well done Fabian!

Nitro Athletics

Well done to all the students who participated in the State Nitro Athletics Championships. A big

congratulations to the Grade 9 and 10 boys’ team who finished third across the state and won the right to

compete in the National All Schools Championship to be held in Perth. Unfortunately, due to some

students being unavailable, the cost of the trip and competing events at this time of the year, we won’t be

sending a team to Perth. The boys: Jack, James, Nik, Jonte, Oliver, Jed and Elijah should be proud of

their efforts’.

GRADE 8 REPORT

The sun is finally shining, albeit sporadically, and the Grade 8 cohort has settled in to the busiest term of the

year! Students this term will be immersing themselves in the personal stories of others, delving into Japanese

history – focusing on the Shogunate era, experimenting and exploring Chemistry, as well as preparing for our

upcoming Athletics Carnival by honing their skills in all track and field events during PE lessons. In addition to

our school athletics carnival coming up on November 13 and 14, students also have opportunities to

participate in extra-curricular activities such as: the cricket gala day, the Kakka Challenge, the Schools

Triathlon Challenge and Activities Week at the end of the year. I encourage all Grade 8 students to

participate in as many of the extra-curricular activities as they can this term, and commend those who have

already done so. I also encourage Grade 8 students to be brave and consider nominating themselves for the

School Association Representative roles (also known as the blue jackets) for next year. Members of the LHS

student leadership team recently spoke to students about what the role involves and the leadership

opportunities and skills which could be developed by being in this role.

In contrast to what is currently happening, earlier this year all Grade 8 students took part in the Australian

History Competition. We have recently received the results from the competition and across the board students performed well, with four Grade 8 students achieving a ‘Distinction’ for their efforts. Congratulations

to the following Grade 8 students who achieved this fantastic result: Zita Baldini, Ben Chaplin, Oscar

Fenlon-Carr and Matthew Mackinnon. These students will be acknowledged in our next assembly for

their efforts.

On a final note, the Grade 8 cohort has consistently demonstrated our four school values throughout the

year, and I hope all students continue to do so in their final term for 2019.

GRADE 8 COORDINATOR

GRADE 7 REPORT

Term 4 is underway and we have plenty to look forward to for the rest of the year. Students have settled

back into regular classroom routines and are getting stuck into units of work across all their subjects.

Expectations for this part of the year remain the same as any other time, and this particularly applies to

ensuring students are properly prepared for class. Students must have a fully equipped pencil case with all

necessary stationary and supplies.

Some of our Grade 7 students did some impressive things during the holidays! Georgia Perry travelled to

Queensland to participate in a gymnastics competition. Flynn Austin and Tyler Robbins both completed

the Burnie 10, with the former running the fastest time in our school’s team. Sharna Dolbey competed and

placed in an equestrian event held interstate, and Piper Stevenson completed an endurance ride on

horseback. Well done to all students who are excelling in their extracurricular activities!

As the term goes on, we still have events such as the 1500m race, the athletics carnival, the triathlon

challenge, and activities week on the horizon. Now that immunisations are out of the way, we have a lot of

good times to look forward to.

GRADE 7 TEACHER

GRADE 9 REPORT

Term 4 has begun and I think everyone is setting in for a term that usually flies by. As always, my message to

the group is think positive, and positive relationships is one of our school values that we will continue to try

to instil in all of you. For me, I am setting myself a challenge to regularly get around to every student to help

to build positive relationships. While I am doing this, I will be continuing the message for everyone to be

respectful to all others, appreciate and accept everyone’s differences, and under no circumstances do we

intentionally cause conflict or divide. We are also being very vigilant in identifying any situation that is causing

conflict and dealing with these students accordingly.

On Wednesday 24 October, all Grade 9 and 10 students were involved in a forensic educational interactive

called ‘A Case of Conspiracy?’ conducted by Jeshka, from Education Interactive. You can find them here.

Students looked at evidence collected from a crime scene (based on a real crime scene from the 1980s) in

which a drug dealer, a couple who were lawyers, and another suspect were involved in a murder and arson

investigation. Students used a combination of autopsy reports, digital evidence (text messages), handwriting,

fingerprints, trace evidence including gunshot residue, ballistics, tyre impressions, blood samples and DNA to

come to a conclusion about who the murderer was, and what their motive was. Students were interested to

hear that whatever you delete off your phones can be recovered by digital forensic experts, including

snapchats and other content which might be stored on servers.

Here are the quotes from the students about what they learnt during the scenario:

“I learnt that if you want to study anything to do with science or the human body, make sure you know

chemistry. If you want to become a Forensic Scientist, biology and chemistry are the main subjects you need

to study,” said Georgia.

“I learnt that you can make really good fake blood with food dye and chocolate sauce, and that you can also

see blood and biological substances on dark clothes using chemicals and under UV light.”

As I have mentioned in a previous article, 2020 holds many opportunities for students to have a role in some

form of leadership. There is the 2020 Latrobe High Leadership team, where thirty nine students have

nominated themselves. Their nomination form has been put up for the student body to read and get to know

the candidate that little bit more. They will go through the process of speeches, starting on Tuesday 5

November, and then voting will decide who will represent the team. Students who make the team will work

with Mrs Heazlewood throughout the year and will develop their leadership skills in a variety of ways. School

House Captains are another opportunity to be in a leadership role. School House Captains have an important

role to support the HPE team to organise and coordinate School Carnivals and sporting events. This

important role is chosen by the HPE team. If those two opportunities are not your cup of tea, students also

have the opportunity to become Support Leaders. Coordinated by Mrs Forbes and Mr Oliver, the role of the

Support Leader is to assist the students. These roles are divided into Literacy Leaders, Numeracy Leaders,

Learning for Life Leaders and Eco leaders. For more information about these roles, please see Mrs Forbes and

Mr Oliver. I wish all students the best of luck with the appointments of these positions.

2019 GRADE 10 DINNER

The 2019 Grade 10 Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 December. The Farewell Assembly will also be

held on Thursday 19 December from approximately 9am - 11am. We ask that students do not make any

appointments until after 11:30am. The assembly is compulsory, if students do not attend the assembly

they will not be permitted to attend the Grade 10 Dinner.

GRADE 10 REPORT

Grade 10 students are in their final ever term at Latrobe High School. It is important that all students

stay focused on their studies and ensure they finish the term and their time at Latrobe High School with

a positive approach and vital that students focus on our four school values: learning, positive

relationships, respect and resilience. Students need to ensure that they are attending at all times, wearing

full school uniform and putting in their best effort at all times. It is essential that to be invited to the end

of year celebrations they meet all the conditions listed.

The Farewell Assembly will be held on Thursday 19 December from approximately 9am - 11am and the

Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 December. We ask that students do not make any appointments

until after 11:30am. The assembly is compulsory, if students do not attend the assembly they will not be

permitted to attend the Grade 10 Dinner. We are currently looking at the activities we will be running

with the Grade 10’s during the final days before their final dinner and will be talking to students in the

near future, outlining what is planned, and letting them know more about procedures for the dinner and

their final assembly.

All Grade 10 students have been given a Student Information Validation Form from Don College.

Information on this form needs to be checked, changed if necessary, and then returned to our school

office before the end of next week.

Our enrolment days for Don College will take place at Latrobe High School on Monday 11 and Tuesday

12 November in our school library. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions during their

enrolment interview to ensure they have made the best choices for their pathway. The Don College

Start Day will be held on Tuesday 3 December. More information regarding this day will be handed out

GRADE 10 COORDINATOR

GOLD SEPTEMBER

Latrobe High School and Tim Blair have been in cahoots for many years now and keeping up with

tradition the student leaders have organised many events and fundraisers in an attempt to raise funds for

children living with cancer, hoping to find a cure. On average 163,000 children will be diagnosed with

cancer; making it the biggest childhood killer in Australia.

The Tim Blair Run for Kids Foundation traces its origins back to 1994, when after a diagnosis of epilepsy,

Tim began running to become fitter and healthier. As with so many others, his love for running grew and

he began to run in fun runs and other events aiming to raise money for charities. Before organising his

own charity in which he hoped to find a cure for childhood cancer. During September Tim came to

speak with the Student Leaders about his passion for his charity and his background. After Tim’s talk we

began discussion on how we can raise funds for Childhood Cancer and spread awareness.

The month consisted of many different events organised by the Student Leadership Team. The month

was kicked off with a Student Auction, where students were auctioned off to the staff as their helpers for

the month. Basketball games were held every Wednesday lunchtime with more donations coming

through every time, each week saw a grade play against another, up until the final, which saw the grade 10’s face the teachers, giving the students much needed enjoyment. A bake sale saw the leaders slave

over a hot stove a bring in their creations for other students to purchase, raising over $300. A football

competition was held at lunchtime in which students participated in seeing how far they could kick, the

winner receiving a prize. There was also a footy colours day and a casual clothes day with a hint of gold

was held promoting awareness of childhood cancer. Each event saw a large amount of traction, giving

childhood cancer much needed funds and awareness. Lastly, donation tins were placed in shops around

Latrobe and Port Sorrell of which we raised over $1000. In total we raised $2900 beating out that of last

years $2800.

To date, along with the help of Latrobe High School and others, the Tim Blair Run for Kids events have

raised in excess of $450,000 for sick children and childhood cancer research.

On Sunday 20 October, Latrobe High School had 2 teams participate in the gruelling 10km road race. The

girls placed 2nd in their division with strong runs and the boys also ran strongly and placed 6th in the

schools division.

Results were as follows: Flynn A - 42.59, Belle - 51.54, Brielle - 52.18, Fabian - 57.04, Flynn S -

57.05, Tyler - 64.33, Ava - 68.38 and Bianca - 73.25.

Well done to all participants!

CRICKET GALA DAY

On Wednesday 23 October, Latrobe High School entered two teams in the Cricket Tasmania Gala day.

The boys games took place at Byard Park and the girls games at Meercroft Park. The girls got off to a

flying start against St Brendan Shaw which saw see them win by an outstanding margin. The second round

got underway against Ulverstone High School. Once again, the girls showed fantastic teamwork and effort

resulting in another win making them two from two. As a result of a bye, the girls managed to showcase

their professionalism and preparation for their next game by eating multiple bags of chips accompanied by

milkshakes and soft drinks. In the final round after the sugar rush had kicked in, the girls were up against

Devonport High School and managed to hit a whopping 5 sixes and multiple 4’s. After a tremendous team

effort, the girls finished on top of their pool meaning they had qualified for the regional finals which will be

played at a later date. Special mention to Piper Stafford who managed to get three run out wickets in

the opening game, Lily Johnson, Kate Chaplin, Keisha Williams, Tess Horton, Michala

Frankcombe hitting fours and sixes at will.

The boys played Reece High School in the morning. Reece set a solid total of 4/122. Our boys went out

to the crease full of confidence, however, we unfortunately couldn’t get a batting partnership going and were bowled out for under 100. The second game was against Ulverstone Secondary College, who were

too strong for our boys. Special mentions go out to Tayden Lyall who toped scored in the first game,

Ben Chaplin, Hayden Richardson, Nathan Bessell and Chase Redpath.

MyState Student Film Festival Entries due this weekend 27 October!

Students in the Junior Personal Interest Film Making course this Term have just

completed their film projects and are entering them in the MyState Student Film

Festival 2019.

We will wait to see if we get any finalists in the Awards, where over $18 000 worth of prize money will

be presented to students for their work at a ceremony on 3 December in Hobart.

Grade 7 and 8 students from Latrobe High School have entered films in several categories, including

Best Documentary, Sound Scape, Animation and Drama.

If there are any other students out there who have film projects they’ve completed at home they are

welcome to enter by this Sunday 27 October. Please show Ms Paice (Science staffroom) your film

Ethan stars as the murderer in Grade 7 film The Footening

‘TAKING ON GOLIATH’

Over the break Isaac and I, along with 14 other students and 5 other adults, attended the annual ‘Taking

on Goliath” Camp, put on by the Scripture Union to Freycinet. On Thursday afternoon we met together

in Launceston and headed out to Honeymoon bay campsite, where we had a BBQ dinner and got to try

out our camping gear before heading off the next day. Walking around Mt Mayson and across the Ismith,

we reached Wineglass bay campsite on Friday after 3½ hrs walking. Saturday we got to walk half way up

Mt Graham to a view point looking back over the lagoon and 2 bays back to the hazards, before heading

back to the beach for a swim, even though the water was 9 degrees, about 16 people went in, then

warmed up some beach games. On Sunday we packed up and headed out over Wineglass bay beach and

up the saddle. All the while through the trip, a leader shared the old story of David and his life before he

got to fight for his country and ended up beating the giant, Goliath. We looked at some of the challenges

he grew up with being the youngest of 7, and how we could learn from his example in facing the

challenges in our own lives, even as we faced soft beaches, heavy packs and eating porridge for breakfast

for 3 days. It was great to be in a place where many people don’t get to and be able to look at the Hazard

Mountains from a different perspective.

LEVIES

Shortly, Latrobe High will be setting the levies for the 2020 school year. We are now at the end of term

three and would appreciate your attention to any levies that are still to be paid to the school for

2019. Please note that the school offers a payment plan that enables the levies to be paid off over a

period of time. This is tailored to each family’s circumstances and can be as small as $20 per

fortnight. Please contact the school with your proposed payment plan so we may formalise the

agreement. It’s important to note that this will avoid the debt being monitored by the Department of

Education’s Finance Services.
