Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
Student Voice and Participation
I would like to congratulate the student leadership team (approximately 80 students) on their
successful nomination as leaders across the school. Mr Omar, Miss Flowers and I held a special lunch,
which was an opportunity for all students to express their thoughts on how they would like to
participate as active student leaders across the school.
I was so proud of these student leaders and their conviction to make a difference to the school
environment and local Australian causes by supporting sustainable and community-based projects.
The Sporting House Captains have challenged themselves and their ability to lead change through
school carnivals. While the SRC discussed fundraising ideas to support causes such as medical
research (Steven Walter Foundation), Injured Wild Life, Royal Fire Service and drought stricken rural
remote communities.
Our School Captains and some of our Prefects will soon attend the ‘Leadership By the River’ (LBR)
conference to further develop their leadership capacity. Through this leadership enquiry they will
investigate sustainable school based projects such as grants for solar panelling. Further to this, they
are committing to a Georges River LBR fundraiser to purchase water filtration bubbler systems for rural
students whose water systems have been affected by ash and retardant.
While the pizza was enjoyed, Mr Omar, Miss Flowers and I were so impressed with the voice and
participation of all students during this exercise and look forward to the outcome of their leadership
work across the school.
Playground Upgrade
Phase 1 of the Area 2 playground upgrade was completed during the January school holidays with
the new COLA being installed in Area 2.
Since then, I have been working closely with Urban Landscape and the voice of students, staff and
the P&C to create an outdoor playground environment as phase 2 of the playground upgrade.
2
This playground upgrade will be inclusive of passive and active play areas, it will house enough space
for whole school assemblies/performances, outdoor learning environments, staging, seating, plants
and trees. The school is self-funding the majority of this project. However, we would like to thank the
P&C and school community for their fundraising efforts in the past 12-18 months.
The P&C voted this week to contribute $24,000 towards the build of an amphitheatre at the base of
Area 2. This playground upgrade will commence in week 11, weather permitting and the section
under the COLA should be complete for Day 1, Term 2. The amphitheatre will then be built, and it
should be complete by week 3 of Term 2. Please see the plans that demonstrate the vision of this
playground.
Asset Management
The painting work in A Block was completed this week. These classrooms also had new blinds installed
and we are currently investigating the purchase of new pinboards and white boards. Mrs Matthews’
demountable and two of the Community Language demountables will also be repainted over the
next 2 weeks.
Mrs Theo and Mrs Milner have been working closely with me and several furniture companies to
investigate new flexible furniture options for the K-2 classrooms. Our vision has been restrained by the
size of the classrooms. However, we are determined to have a positive outcome by the end of the
term. Phase 2 of the furniture upgrade will include the Year 3 classrooms.
The school has booked a cleaning contractor to clean the COLA area outside the hall with a high
pressure water cleaner. Once this is complete the school will be sprayed for insects etc. Further to
this, there have been concerns about the bird droppings around the COLAs; the school is currently
reviewing options to detract the birds from the school.
The Department’s Asset Management Unit met with me today to investigate water and sink options
for Mr Omar and Mrs Elmir’s classrooms. AMU have agreed to install the sinks and the teachers are
pleased with this outcome. Installation will occur in the near future.
3
The school will continue to work closely with the department and invest into classroom and
playground environments to ensure a positive and future focused learning environment for the
students of Carlton Public School.
Quality Teaching Programs across the school
I had the pleasure of working with 6 Red, Miss Newman, Mrs Covassin and Mrs Rios on Tuesday. I learnt
about a writing platform ‘storyathon’ where the students were being challenged to write and submit
captivating narratives on a focus word “shocked”. I enjoyed the ‘Texta Talk’ challenge and the
‘Gallery Walk’ that I contributed to, as we all supported one another with brainstorming ideas and
writing threads in a 4C way. I was most impressed with Curtis’ quick wit and writing potential. I am
looking forward to reading 6 Red’s submissions in the coming weeks. Keep up the amazing writing 6
Red.
Communication with the school
The community is reminded of the DoE’s 2019 ‘School Community Charter’ on Collaborative,
Respectful Communication.
The school welcomes all feedback and encourages parents to engage with the school in a respectful
manner. If parents or community members are not satisfied with the school’s response, as per the
charter you are encouraged to follow the complaints process.
We thank you for your support in promoting respectful relationships in and around the school
community.

Road Safety
The school received information for parents this week on parking safely around our school (please
see attached flyer). This is a timely reminder, as in the past fortnight there have been 3 significant
incidents reported to the school concerning parents parking, dropping off and collecting their
children. These incidents have included:
Double parking at the 'Kiss and Drop' area and letting children get out of the car while cars are taking
off and driving past. This decision resulted in both the innocent driver and student being incredibly
shaken, yet thankfully unharmed.
• A school community member parked their car in the main entrance to the school, (right up to the
front gate) in the rain on 5.3.2020. This decision caused congestion and potential danger to families
and students moving in and out of the school.
• A parent collected their child from OoSH driving on and parking on the wrong side of the road on
5.3.2020, causing concern for neighbours that live in Cameron St.
The school and community request that parents and carers take the time to drive safely and park
appropriately when dropping off and picking up children to ensure the safety of all community
members.
A reminder that the 'Kiss and Drop' parking area requires drivers to stay in their car at all times.
We thank you for your support in 'keeping our kids safe!"

Current Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) advice from NSW Health/Department of Education
Current advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff is:
Any student or staff member who has been in, departed from, or transited through the following
countries is excluded from child care services, school or work for 14 days from the date they left the
country:
• mainland China - since 1 February
• Iran - since 1 March
• The Republic of Korea (South Korea) - since 5 March.
• Italy - since 11 March
• Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.
• Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact
with the confirmed case.
• Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms during the 14-
day home-isolation period are able to return to school or work.
The NSW Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed
in Australia. A close contact is a person who has spent significant time either face to face (15 min) or
in an enclosed space (two hours or more) as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. It is
advising these close contacts about not attending work, school or early childhood and childcare
services.
The Department of Education continues to work closely with NSW Ministry of Health to monitor and
respond to developments and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff.
Consistent with current guidelines, children, students and staff who are unwell with respiratory illness
should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any student
becomes unwell, we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided
by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate. For more information, visit NSW Health
Maintaining good hygiene – recommendations from DoE & NSW Health
Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and
spreading respiratory infections. We ask parents and carers to promote good hygiene including
handwashing with soap. Together with good cough etiquette, handwashing is the single most
effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.
Parent Toilets
Please remember that parents/carers are asked to utilise the toilets beside the Library or in the Hall.
The Boys and Girls toilet blocks are for children only. If your child requires assistance with toileting,
please schedule a time to see Miss Rasmussen or Miss Morrison. These practices are in place to keep
all children and community members safe. We thank you for following and supporting these
practices.
Skoolbag e-forms
A reminder that the Skoolbag e-form feature has been opened. We encourage you to access this
feature to notify the school of your child’s absences. This e-form feature has been opened to
encourage parent’s communication with the school as our attendance data has indicated that
many leave days are not being explained. We would appreciate your time to complete the e-form
within 5 working days of your child’s last day of leave to ensure the leave is recorded as justified.
Written notes are still accepted via the classroom teacher.

Young Leaders Day
On Monday the 2nd of March, some year 5 and 6 students were
selected to go to the National Young Leader’s Day, held at the
International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.
This event is all about encouraging young leaders to try new things
and step out of their comfort zone. The speakers at young leader’s
day were Erin Molan (sports reporter and TV presenter), Rove
McManus (comedian and children’s author) Bianca Chatfield
(former Australian diamonds and Melbourne Vixen’s netball player,
and a contestant on the block in 2018) and John Coutis
(motivational speaker).
They each spoke about never giving up, no matter what anyone
else says. A highlight was John Coutis and how he lived his life with
no use of his legs. He spoke about how when he was born, the
doctors told his parents he had little chance of survival because of
his physical disability. He also talked about how he was bullied as
a kid and pushed through to who he is today. All oif the students
walked away inspired with the realisation of what they can do if
they put their mind to it.

P&C News
On Tuesday evening 10.3.2020, the P&C AGM was held. Congratulations to the new Executive team.
Newly elected Executive team are:
President Lidia
Vice President Richard
Vice President Kate
Secretary Kelly
Treasurer Farhana
P&C Meeting
At the P&C meeting we discussed a number of topics:
Playground Upgrade
The P&C will be helping the school to pay for enhancements to the playground upgrade under the
new COLA. We saw the plans and they look fantastic. Big thanks to Kylie and her team for all the
effort put into this.
The P&C voted to change the Facebook page to require all posts to be moderated to prevent
breaches of the P&C social media policy. Just to remind everyone, the P&C's policy is:
1 BE MINDFUL
That social media posts may have consequences when they are not appropriate. Also, although
comments and posts come from your personal account, P&C members must also be aware that their
role with the P&C may create a connection between what is said online and the P&C Association
itself.
2 SHOW RESPECT
Be polite, considerate and show respect in all social media activities. Posts that are negative or which
bring disrepute to the P&C will be removed. A party may be blocked if they continue to post negative
comments. Members will also respect copyright laws.
3 USE YOUR REAL NAME
All users interacting with P&C Social Group, either by liking or commenting, must do so using accounts
that clearly identify the user by their real name. When referring to others, Users are encouraged to
use first names only (with initial of last name if clarification is required eg: Richard J).
4 BE SUPPORTIVE
Users are encouraged to acknowledge someone’s great work or community contribution by adding
a positive reply of ‘liking’ a post. We wish our social media accounts to be used in building our
community – a public pat on the back goes a long way to supporting a positive school environment.
5 DON’T PUBLICLY CRITICISE
Write criticisms in a general way excluding names identifying people. Remember your name may
identify your child and teacher. If something's wrong, contact the contributor or moderator for
correction. Please take up issues involving students or staff directly with the school.
3
6 POST IN THE SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION
Posts or interactions must not incite overly negative sentiments, or contribute or exacerbate overly
negative sentiment. We ask that you do not use the names of any students, staff or any other
members of the parent community in negative postings. All comments must be in the spirit of
collaboration.
7 ASK BEFORE PROMOTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
People may recommend services provided eg: school holiday activities but this does not imply P&C
or School endorsement. Posts endorsing services or businesses should not be self-promoting and
please check with moderator before advertising your own business.
2020 President’s Report
The P&C aims to promote the interests of the school in partnership with staff and students. The P&C is
not here to represent or defend decisions taken by the school, but the P&C is the best forum we have
for communication between the school and the school community – for the benefit of our children.
Parents are invited to suggest new ideas, raise issues or concerns and to ask questions.
A quick summary of the goings on of the past year. We discussed:
● Road Safety, upgrade of guttering and roofs, garbage bins, security and the gates
at the front of the school, school uniforms.
● Activities we were involved in
● Tea and Tissues, School Banking, Book Club, Election BBQ, Easter Raffle, Hot Cross Buns,
Mother’s and Father’s Day breakfast, second-hand uniform stall, Family Portrait day,
Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls, Colour Run, Ramsgate RSL grant for the new bubblers.
Over the year, we’ve also had a number of presentations and discussions about school life
and how to enhance the learning environment and communication with parents.
There were also significant improvements to the physical environment of the School, most
obvious of which is the second Covered Outdoor Learning Area.
Thank you to all the P&C members and parents and citizens of the wider school community
who have been involved in all these activities, who have attended meetings, posted
reminders on Facebook or who have answered questions.
A particular thankyou to Kate, Katie, Kelly, Farhana, Kylie, Mel, Lidia, and Sharon (and any
others I have forgotten) who ran the P&C activities throughout the year. Through your efforts
we have helped to improve the school environment and provide wonderful opportunities for
the students.
Thank you also to the incredible teachers and staff, who work so hard to help our children
learn, grow and mature. Thank you for your willing partnership with us as we seek to play our
part in helping the school.
