FROM THE PRINCIPAL DIRECTIONS FOR 2019 Every year during term 4 we reflect on the work we have done over the last 12 months and explore ways that we can improve. Our Student Free Day next Monday will see us looking backwards and planning forwards. In 2019 our focus as a school will be continuing to develop a con-sistent approach to classroom management, and our on-going journey towards being a strong school community that is responsive to current research about the brain and how relationships help us all to learn. In addition to this we have identified 3 aspects of literacy and numeracy which we will be focusing on throughout the year. These im-provement foci are: Improving the skills of teachers in using information

collected while listening to children read to design the next steps in student learning

Improving the skills of teachers to help their students develop a broad vocabulary

Improving the skills of teachers to help children make the shift from concrete representations of mathematical concepts to abstract representations.

As a school we have identified a number of actions and targets that will help us to improve these specific aspects of our teaching, and we will be reporting on these regularly throughout 2019. YEAR 7’S IN HIGH SCHOOL The government has advised that year 7s in Murray Bridge will be based in High School from the beginning of 2022. The Education Department is doing considerable work around facilities and curriculum to ensure that this shift will be as smooth as possible. This means that our current year 3 cohort will be attending year 7 at Murray Bridge High School in 2022. RESPECT AND RIGHTS While the vast majority of our parents and students are consistently respectful and positive in their interactions with staff, there have been several incidents recently where parents have been aggressive and threatening. This kind of conduct is unacceptable and will not be toler-ated. While we want our parents to be advocates for their children it is important that they see us modelling appropri-ate ways of resolving problems and addressing conflict. Open, honest and solution focussed communication is es-sential. Any person being threatening or aggressive will be asked to leave. All threatening and aggressive behaviour will be reported to the Education Department and to the police, and legal advice will be sought. Staff have the right to a safe workplace, free from threats, violence and ag-gression, and parents who are unable to adhere to this expectation may find that they are no longer welcome at school.

L ast week in our Peer Support session in Stronger Together we looked at the impact of how

working together as a team with similar beliefs, can provide a barrier to bullying. When

everyone is focussed on promoting positive behaviours that respect diversity and individu-

al need, bullying can be reduced. Activities that focus on building the strength of teams and awareness of the responsibilities of bystanders assists in a whole of school approach. Parents

could talk with their students who are undertaking the program about how they could help oth-

ers who are not experiencing good relationships.

T he final session in our Stronger Together Peer Support module will summarise skills learnt

in previous sessions and provides an opportunity to plan to implement further initiatives

across the school. Students will be able to identify personal and whole of school goals to further address bullying and build their own resilience. Ask students what they have

learnt and what else they would like to learn about having good relationships. Contact us with

your ideas.

Thank you to all the participating students, the Peer Leaders, and staff and you as parents for your

support.
