Last week the Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli, announced the levels of funding every public school would receive in the form of additional ‘equity loadings’ with socioeconomic and indigenous disadvantage, being two components of the new needs-based funding model. Under the Government’s new Resource Allocation Model, schools will receive a base school allocation, plus equity loadings for disadvantaged students and targeted support for students who require specific assistance (eg. refugees). Funding for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds will be calculated using a new method called the Family Occupation and Education Index, which takes into account three measures relating to the child’s parents, their highest level of school education, non-school qualifications and their occupation. What does this all mean for us at Cherrybrook Technology High School? As there are only very few Aboriginal students enrolled at CTHS, the amount of money provided under this section is minimal. This, combined with an extremely low Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI) for this area of Sydney, results in very little being allocated to schools in Cherrybrook under a needs-based funding model. However, this school is in a very fortunate position being a relatively new school with a very supportive community. Given that we have a skilled and committed school staff and a student cohort with positive attitudes towards education, the standard of education provided should continue to keep Cherrybrook Technology High School at the forefront of schools in NSW. School Bus There are some issues with the 626 bus that leaves Cherrybrook Technology High School at 3:05pm and travels to Pennant Hills. Recently this bus has been dangerously overcrowded and many of the students who catch it only travel one or two bus stops. The bus company has initiated an investigation into the demand for that service and until that is completed, only students with valid bus passes will be able to travel on that particular bus. If there are seats available, paying students will be able to board. However, given the current demand, many students will be required to walk home or to make alternative travel arrangements. Year 8 Lifesaving The mild weather of the past two weeks has been gratefully received by the 304 Year 8 students, 56 Year 9 and Year 10 instructors and 16 members of staff who have all been involved in the annual Year 8 Lifesaving Program. This year’s program has been conducted at Waves in Baulkham Hills and at Epping Pool. Staff at both of these centres have commented on how courteous and well-behaved the students have been. The value of this program cannot be over -stated as it is most important that all students are able to swim to a standard that will help ensure their future safety in the water. Many thanks to Mr Fitzgerald and Mrs Skyba for their organisation. Retirement of Mrs Fiona Hay Thursday 31 October was the last day of service for our wonderful Mathematics Head Teacher, Mrs Fiona Hay. Mrs Hay has been at Cherrybrook Technology High School for more than twenty years and she is now retiring from the teaching profession. She started here on 1 February 1993 as an enthusiastic mathematics teacher from Cheltenham Girls High School. After a few years she was promoted to her current position of Head Teacher Mathematics, where she has provided invaluable guidance and service to a maths staff of more than twenty people. She has been an inspirational teacher, someone who has an excellent knowledge of all the maths courses from Year 7 to Year 12. Many hundreds of students of all ages have benefitted enormously from her exceptional teaching and guidance, and parents have appreciated the advice she has provided concerning the most appropriate maths courses for their children. The public school system of NSW is losing a valued teacher and administrator and we at CTHS will miss her enthusiasm, her sense of humour and her willingness to get involved in every aspect of school life. Best wishes to Mrs Hay for a happy and healthy retirement. CTHS Iron Man/Woman Challenge Beep Test Approximately 50 boys and three members of staff participated in the Cherrybrook Technology High School Ironman Challenge Beep Test this week. Congratulations to the junior winner Michael Fiedler and runner -up Clayton Anstee. The senior winner was Jack Patten with Daniel Jacinto as runner-up. The girls’ competition was held last week with Georgia Winkcup the senior winner and Courtney Cattell winning the junior section.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT School Funding Schools have been provided with details of their 2014 funding under the new Gonski-inspired model. Last week the Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli, announced the levels of funding every public school would receive in the form of additional ‘equity loadings’ with socioeconomic and indigenous disadvantage, being two components of the new needs-based funding model.

Under the Government’s new Resource Allocation Model, schools will receive a base school allocation, plus equity loadings for disadvantaged students and targeted support for students who require specific assistance (eg. refugees). Funding for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds will be calculated using a new

method called the Family Occupation and Education Index, which takes into account three measures relating to the child’s parents, their highest level of school education, non-school qualifications and their occupation.

The value of this program cannot be over-stated as it is most important that all students are able to swim to a standard that will help ensure their future safety in the water.

Year 11 Public Speaking The Year 11 Public Speaking Final was held on the final day of Term 3. As usual this was an excellent competition and all entrants deserve recognition for their ability to entertain and inform a large audience. The Advanced competition opened with Rachel King who addressed the topic of ‘Fear’, cleverly weaving an emotional, entertaining and historical approach to the notion of fear through the ages. Aparna Vishwanathan, with her engaging voice, examined the concept of ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’. In Eric Packer’s speech, the audience was forced to examine their perception of the law and the notion that crime that does not pay, that left us feeling it was a fluid, likeable and humorous talk rather than a formal speech. Natalie Eldrigde used quirky stories of stupid laws to connect to the audience, yet, she also encouraged reflection on the purpose of laws in society. Brianna McDowell’s pessimistic view of the ‘End of the World’ was beautifully and cleverly constructed to raise many questions about a society where many people feel hollow. The absolute attention of the audience revealed the alarming elements of truth within her speech.

‘Save the Children’ is a topic often tackled in speaking competitions, but rarely is it done with so much conviction as that shown by Sakinah Mariot. Dilani Gunawardena also attacked a popular issue giving it a new twist. She described a new era of ‘Human Zombies’, victims of an education system where all students are expected to fit and achieve within the box. Her composition made this a very provocative speech to compare our own experiences of education to those she presented. Senthan Lingam used humour to give an insight into the teenage brain, especially in relation to social media and the importance of image. A beautifully learned speech about procrastination was presented off by heart by Patricia Wibisono, making us all feel a little guilty for procrast inating, but also suggesting that it can be a good thing. Dylan Scott was a crowd favourite, using personal anecdotes and metaphors about laziness. Sajani Perera informed the audience about the growing concern of mental health issues affecting as many as two out of three people. Her speech was expertly researched, presenting lots of relevant examples, and her final message to look out for your friends was an excellent one for an audience just embarking on their Year 12 journey.

Erik Ostman finished the Advanced English competition with an insight into the Candy Crush addiction sweeping a variety of ages. This was a sensational end to the competition with such an entertaining and interesting speech that encompassed the stages of addiction. The winner of this competition with his quirky, well researched speech on ‘Racism’ was Russell Tan. This is a topic that is often selected for public speaking competitions but rarely is it presented with so much finesse and connection to the audience, who loved his use of interesting voices combined with serious comments about the need for tolerance.

On the same day the small Standard English cohort also presented their speeches. Runner-up was Cole Rudlin who presented some interesting facts on social media. The winner of the Standard English competition was Daniel Patterson who engaged the audience with absorbing facts about issues related to school security. Congratulations to all speakers for their effort and enthusiasm in these presentations.

Grease Excursion On Wednesday this week Year 9, 10 and 12 dance and drama students, accompanied by Miss Holt and Ms Marrée, attended a performance of Grease - The Musical at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, Darling Harbour. Students enjoyed lunch on the grass by the harbour before watching a matinée show. The production was bright and colourful with lots of audience interaction, and gave our students plenty to reflect upon for their curriculum work. It was wonderful to hear comments from audience members on the exemplary behaviour of our students on this excursion for which they should be commended. Miss Holt and Ms Marrée

Year 9 Camp We attended the Year 9 Great Aussie Bush Camp from 14 - 16 October. As soon as we arrived we were welcomed by kind instructors who gave us a tour of the place. Then we joined the individual groups for activities such as leap of faith, giant swing and many more. Through these activities we could interact and build relationships with the students. The highlight of Year 9 camp would be the activity called ‘Commando Night’. Some students were held as hostages in the middle of the bush and the rest of Year 9 had to come and save them, the best part was seeing the students’ frightened faces as we and the teachers jumped out of the bushes to capture them. Overall, this camp was one of our most memorable experiences and hope future Year 9 students have just as much fun as we did. Max Lim and Rachel Choi, Stage 5 Student Representatives.
