YEAR 5 CHALLENGE REPORT
Last Tuesday saw 15 intrepid Year 5
students from our feeder primary
schools attend the Dapto Learning
Community Challenge Shield. Each
of the students was selected to attend
Kanahooka High School after
completing an Interactive Whiteboard
Lesson involving problem solving
activities run by Mr Panecasio at each
school.
Students took part in 4 activities
including Drama with Mr Pirie, Maths
with Mr Dalley, Sources and Evidence
with Mr Panecasio and Interactive
Whiteboard quiz session with Miss
Boreland. Points were allocated to
individuals and to their school total.
All students represented their schools
with distinction, and received a
certificate of participation. At the end
of the day the champion school for the
second year in a row was Hayes Park
Public School represented by Emerson
Burke, Mackenzie Hill, Amy Withnall
and Amelia Anderson.
In the individual competition, 1st Place
went to Emerson Burke of Hayes
Park, 2nd Place to Chelsea Cooper of
Lakelands and 3rd to Amy Withnall of
Hayes Park.

DAPTO WOMENS BOWLING
CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
Kasandra Child, Nathan Sorrentino and
Mrs Haines began this catering
extravaganza at 7.00am. The Hospitality
students took on the challenge of preparing
and serving morning tea to sixty women.
There was a fruit platter, cheese and
cabanossi platter, raisin bread, tea and
coffee.
The comments were all very positive, some
about the food presentation and others in
regard to their presentation of trainee food
servers.
They were very happy and appreciative of
our work due to the students waiting on
the tables and plating food and also
portion plating all the desserts. The ladies
said it really felt like Christmas because
they were waited on. The students were
able to develop their skills in time
management, using the industrial lifter for
dishwashing and food service.
We were very impressed with the student’s
ability to plan, prepare, present healthy
wholesome foods and the platters were
very colourful and appetising. All
students are to be congratulated for their
teamwork and ability to respond to the
needs of the ladies. Thanks Mrs Haines
and the Year 12 Hospitality class.

BACK 2 BASICS DAY
Last Friday, Kanahooka High
participated in a Back 2 Basics day
which meant “turning off the
power” from 8.20am until lunch
time (with the exception of
essential services). This was an
initiative started by Ulladulla High
School a couple of years ago and
the school thought we would also
like to participate.
Leading up to the day Mrs Roddan
and I took daily meter readings so
we could see what savings might
be made. SRC members (with the
help of Mr Kipp) blew whistles
and a very noisy horn to tell us
when each period finished whilst
other students did two power
audits in every room before and
after recess to see whether power
was being used.
It was great to see the whole
school community get behind this
initiative and I was astonished that
we had reduced our power usage
during that time by 80%!
Congratulations to the entire
school, but particularly to the 700
Block which used only minimal
power during the day and Mr
Kipp and SRC members who
helped out. It is hoped that
everyone will now become more
aware of not leaving lights and
fans on unnecessarily and turn
them off when not in use.

PRESENTATION DAY
Our school Presentation Day is
being held on Tuesday 15th
December at the Ribbonwood
Centre, Dapto. Notes have gone
home to our award recipients and
we are anticipating a wonderful
afternoon.
COFFEE SCHOOL EXCURSION
Six Year 12 Hospitality students travelled
to Sydney last week to take part in a full
day coffee making course.
We learnt to work a coffee machine, froth
milk correctly, make all the different
types of coffee and make designs in the
coffee with the crema.
We got to taste all the coffees but some
people were not used to the caffeine (aka
Brooke), however, we all enjoyed the hot
chocolate.
We also got to have lunch at a two storey
McDonalds on George Street.
We all learnt new skills and hope to get a
coffee machine for our Hospitality class
to show off our skills.

MUMMIFIED RATS
7K1 mummified rats last Friday in our
Science period. We had to take out all
the organs except the brain and heart
before completely filling the inside with
salt. The room stank of dead rat and it
was an exciting but disgusting
experience.

ANNUAL CLEARANCE
All students have now been issued
with their Annual Clearance Forms.
This process has been put in place to
ensure all fees are paid and resources
are returned in preparation for a
smooth start to 2010. We would
appreciate if these forms could be
completed and returned to Year
Advisers by Monday 14th December
2009.

YEAR 10 WELFARE DAY
Last Friday our Year 10 students
started their day with bacon and eggs
and then proceeded to a range of
welfare workshops with speakers
from a diverse range of areas
including Headspace, Job Illawarra,
Police Liaison Officer and
Wollongong Community Legal
Centre.
The Year 10 students reported that the
sessions were enjoyable and very
informative. It was also pleasing that
all speakers commended the Year 10
students for their enthusiasm and
insightful comments.

APOLOGY
On assembly last week, I spoke about
having a special assembly and BBQ
for all students gaining 1st, 2nd and 3rd
in their class. I was planning to
organise the event for Monday 14th
December. Unfortunately, the
assembly and BBQ are not possible
before the end of term. However, the
certificates will go ahead and will be
presented to students when they
receive their reports on Monday.
Have a safe and happy holiday.
