A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESKMrs Michelle KellyToday is my last day at work for this term. I am taking long service leave for a very special reason and whilst many of you will have heard already I am delighted to officially announce that I will be getting married on the 17th September to Bernie Cairelli.

Yes, that is the day after the Spring Fair! However, everyone has their price and we have decided that it would be worth interrupting my long service leave and our wedding preparations to attend the Spring Fair, if we could raise $2000 for the Junior School playground. You would all have received the following email from Mrs Parkhouse:

“On Friday September 15th, we will be building a coin trail on the basketball court. Our aim is to raise funds to put towards our new playground. Mrs Kelly has said if we raise $2000 she will attend Spring Fair in her wedding gown! Please send your children to school with a coin donation on Friday 15th, so we can see Mrs Kelly in a vision of white at Spring Fair!” We promise that all proceeds will go towards the Junior School playground, not the honeymoon!

I will also still be in attendance at the Year 12 graduation before we take our honeymoon and fly off for our cruise from Hawaii back to Sydney (yay!!!!).

I appreciate that many of the children may want to watch the wedding ceremony, and if they wish to, they can. We are getting married as part of our Sunday morning church

service which is live streamed from 10:30am, so you can go to the following link and watch as we share our vows.

http://subsplash.com/libertymedia/s/6f340fa/

Alternatively go to the Liberty Family Church website and click on media, then follow the prompts for live streaming.

I will be returning to work on the 16th October, which is the beginning of Week 2, Term 4. I would like to thank my amazing leadership team who have been very patient with me in getting things done under even more time pressure than usual before I leave. I am confident that the school is in very safe hands in my absence.

All the Heads of School will be Acting Principal for a week each in my absence, should there be any emergencies, but in most cases please speak to your relevant Head of School for any school matters.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL CHAPLAINMr Geoff Brown

One of the first things they teach you in marriage communications is to stay away from using emotionally fatalistic words like “never” or “always”, as in, “You never help around here!” or “You always waste money”. It is very rare that human behaviour is always or never. But what about God? The Bible makes it clear that His ways are not our ways. In Romans 3:4 it says, “Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true!”

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

Now consider these verses in light of the fact that God does not lie. Moses tells us to be strong and courageous and not afraid. The author of Hebrews wrote to be content with what you have. Why all the optimism? Why the courage? Because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. God Himself has said to you and I, Never. Never. NEVER! Let it sink in – He will never leave you or forsake you!

Today, right now, let this fact change your day. Let it reshape your emotions. Let it precede all your decisions. He will never leave you or forsake you.

FUndRaising attempt

Some very good natured teachers volunteered them-selves to wear their undies on the outside for a very good cause. The Today Show are running a competition for schools. $5000 will be given to 5 schools who are able to capture the essence of what Captain Underpants stands for in a single photo. Thank you teachers for be-ing such good sports! Hopefully we will walk away with the win and put a further $5000 into our playground fund.

CRUsadeR Camp

Our Year 3 & 4s headed off for camp on Thursday to Lake Macquarie. Camp is such a wonderful place to learn new skills. One of the most important life lessons is the ability to interact with others well. Students learn to do this to a certain degree within their own families but experiences in big groups for extended periods of time, like they have on camp, is a great way to learn and practice these skills.

It is always good to have new, positive experiences. As you can see from the looks on the students faces in the photographs, they would agree with this sentiment! Camp offers the opportunity to experience new things in spades! Opportunities to learn new things and learn new skills is what camp is all about.

Of course a huge thank you must go to the teachers who leave their own families behind to accompany their students on camp. Although exhausting, I know that teachers also really value the opportunity camp gives to strengthen the bond between teachers and students and to see the children get the opportunity to step right out of their comfort zone!

Book week

Book paRade dayWe had a beautiful sunny day for our Book Parade and it was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents attending this year! The costumes were amazing and thank you to all of the parents for their hard work in creating them.

Thank you also to all of our parents who supported our Book Fair. We sold over $6000 of books which is an incredible re-sult! This has enabled us to pass on a good commission to Junior School to help raise funds for the new playground. Thank you also to the parents who generously donated new books to our Library.

Well done to all of the students who entered our colouring in competition this year. Our judges had a tough job in choosing the winners as the standard this year was so high.

aUthoR/iLLUstRatoR visitThis year we enjoyed a visit from author Frances Watts and il-lustrator David Legge. They were a dynamic duo who kept our students entertained with a pirate dance and many stories of their experiences in writing and illustrating. David shared his knowledge of illustration and we were very privileged that he brought some of his original artworks with him to share with the students. Frances is an incredible writer who encouraged the students to be creative and share their personal stories in their own writing. Meeting an author and illustrator is a spe-cial experience and we hope our students had fun!

stage 2 hRis soCCeR gaLa day

On Tuesday 29th August, our Stage 2 Soccer team attended the 2017 HRIS Soccer Gala Day. The students loved playing every moment on the field. Their sportsmanship and behaviour was outstanding. We were stoked to end the day with a very convincing win.

The attendance of parents on the the day was much appreciated. Parent encouragement and input is valued by both students and staff at all sporting events.

mrs Claire mackenzieJunior School Physical Education Teacher

I really enjoyed the soccer gala day. I loved having fun running around on the oval and trying to score goals. I scored once but unfortunately the ref said it was offside!!! I tried my best and it was really worth it.

My three highlights of the day were of course running around having fun, playing with my friends and playing soccer on the field.by Jay b

When we got there we had to wait for a while but when it was time to play I was so excited. It started and we scored it was a tie but the game was so fun. The best thing about it was there was a canteen it was the best soccer gala day ever.by Jacob c At the soccer gala day we had the best day. My soccer team and I had the best time. We played four games. In the first game we had a draw, then two losses and then a big win 5-0. The best thing at the soccer gala day was when I scored a goal and the big win!!by tadi m

I got on a bus to compete in a soccer gala day at Newcastle. We got off the bus at an oval. There were 5 different sized ovals. My team and I sat underneath a tree. We waited for our game then we got up and played. The score at the end of the game was1-1. My favourite part was when my dad came to watch me play. He started to watch then he left to go to Melbourne. I got to play with my friends and eat lollies and kick the ball. We came 8th in all the schools so we did well then we went back to school. It was an awesome day.by raiden H

It has been another busy period for those in Middle School!

CommUnityI am encouraged at our sense of Christian community and the how the students, parents and staff come together to support and celebrate our achievements.

heBRews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

This term in English, Stage 3 have been exploring the theme of ‘belonging’. Over the last few weeks, they have written and published picture books that are designed for younger students and that address this theme of belonging. On Tuesday, Year 6 read our stories to the Kindergarten students, who really enjoyed them. Well done Year 6 and thanks Kindy for letting us share our stories with you!(miss mcknight ~ Stage 3 Teacher)

Well done to Mr Hynd and the students who were involved in the Enrichment Showcase. Parents, teachers and guests were thoroughly impressed at the level of effort that was applied to each and every project.

In their historical studies Year 8 have been examining the Crusades and Medieval life. The students have been creating model castles, suits of armour and weaponry from the period. This culminated in a mock battle between both Year 8 classes. Year 8 have researched the causes and consequences of the conflict, from both the Christian and Islamic perspective.

hRis netBaLL gaLa day

On Tuesday 29 August, I had the pleasure of taking the Year 3 & 4 and the Year 5 & 6 netball teams to a HRIS Netball Gala Day.

The girls had such a fun day and they played really well as a team. They maintained a positive attitude throughout the day and loved competing. They enjoyed playing different positions, encouraging each other and for some of them playing in their first game of netball.

Thank you to Hannah (Year 11) and Hope (Year 9) who were the coaches for the Year 3 & 4 team on the day.

Well done to all the girls who competed on the day; you represented our College with pride and your enthusiastic attitude and commitment is to be commended.

mrs Lyndal shawJunior School Teacher

I think that netball was fun and that there was lots of teamwork and sportsmanship. This was my first netball game and I think it went pretty well except for the fact that we only got close to the goal post twice but we didn't shoot any goals. I think that playing WD, WA and GD was good for me and it was very fun but, also tiring. We got into the semi finals and most of the teams we played were very good. But the most important thing was that we had fun and of course, we did!by sarah b

Netball is my favourite sport and when I found out I was in the netball team I was so excited. Arriving was ok because we had to wake up really early to ride on the bus but that was the only not so fun thing. As soon as we got our skirts and got on the bus I knew this day was going to be fun. We arrived around an hour and a half later, got out of the bus and went to the older girls first game. We got changed into our bottle green coloured netball skirts and t-shirts in the colour white, yellow and green. Then we played seven games of netball. My favourite position was centre. Our coaches for the day were Hannah and Hope. They said we went really well and I had a great time.by elise m

Yesterday I had fun at netball, trying out new moves learning new skills and a especially how it was my first netball gala day and it was lots of FUN. Even though we lost every game I was excited about every game and training at lunch times with Mrs Shaw. It was cool.by rejoice m

Yesterday I went to the netball Gala Day. l had a lot of fun eating lollies but mainly playing netball.I liked playing new positions and it was just a lot of fun.by matilda smith

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOLMr Cameron Johnston

enRiChment showCaseLast Wednesday night students from Middle School and Senior School were involved in the Enrichment Showcase. The night is designed for students interested in extending their learning through personal interest projects. This year the theme was integrity. The students could choose their area of interest that would connect with the theme. Jade (Year Ten) chose to do the integrity of the Tower of Pisa and shared some amazing facts about the structure. Other projects included the integrity around charities, textual comparisons between novels and movies, the integrity of running a business, and the integrity of marketing/commercials/labelling. It was an excellent night and the depth of student knowledge was incredible. Congratulations to all students and my thanks to Mr Hynd for taking each of the students on this journey of discovery.

engLish exCURsion to the sheRLoCk hoLmes exhiBition at the poweRhoUse mUseUm

Last week, myself along with Miss Davidson, the Year 11 Extension English class and the up and coming Year 10’s who will be partaking in the Extension English course next year all went to the Powerhouse Museum to visit the Sherlock Holmes’ exhibition. We have been studying crime fiction authors this year, Sherlock Holmes being one of the most prominent.

When we arrived at the Museum we were transported back to Sherlock Holmes’ Victorian London where we had the ability to explore the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man behind Sherlock Holmes. It was very in-teresting due to the fact that we got to see original man-uscripts and first editions as well as immerse ourselves into a very accurate recreation of 221B Baker Street, the home of Sherlock and his sidekick Watson. We then made our way into the interactive exhibition which allowed us to crack the case by conducting experiments. The whole exhibition was very realistic and hands on, even allowing us to have a go at understanding Morse code! This was a wonderful once-in-a lifetime experience, which we all thoroughly enjoyed!

7-12 CeLeBRates Book week

On Thursday 24th August, Years 7-12 had their opportunity to celebrate Book Week. It fun started with Years 7 and 8 and a character parade. Prizes were awarded for Best Dressed Book Characters. Mrs Kelly, our guest judge found it very difficult to decide due to the high quality of costumes. After the parade the students rotated around 4 activities; charades, celebrity heads, Family Feud, and a treasure hunt, all run by our Year 11 prefect nominees.

Years 9-12 were next, and this time our guest judges Mr Johnston, Mr Creanor and Mr Boyce also had a tough time deciding on who to give prizes to for Best Dressed. It is getting more difficult every year with the quality of costumes increasing. These years then also got to participate in our Book Week inspired activities.

Thank you to the Prefect Nominees for running the activities and to Mrs Peet, Mr Heard, Mrs Moir and Mr Holmes for helping out on the day.

It was a great day and much fun was had by all.

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK NEWSLETTER ITEM FOR SEPTEMBER

Learning Collaboratively

We are all different in the way we prefer to learn. Some students like to work in groups, andothers prefer to work alone. Some students like to discuss things over Skype or messengerand some like to work together in person. There is a reason why we have the saying ‘twoheads are better than one’, so let’s see how this applies to different types of students.

If you think you always prefer to work alone:

- It is great that you are very self-sufficient. Students who prefer to work alone areoften confident in their own abilities. However sometimes these students make itmore difficult for themselves by not asking for help when they need it. So if you arethis type of student, don’t struggle on alone when you get into difficulties or don’tunderstand something. Being able to ask for help when you need it is an importantskill for academic success. Just become more aware that you don’t always ask forhelp and instead try reaching out a little more when you need help.

- The other area to consider is that when you talk about things with other people it canoften help you to see things from a different perspective. By discussing ideas withanother person, you also may find you clarify your own thoughts. By not being opento collaboration, you might not develop your ideas as well as you could or you mightnot see potential issues that a fresh pair of eyes and ears might discover. If youhaven’t done much collaboration, give it a try and you might find yourself surprised athow valuable you find the experience.

If you already love working with other people:

- Make sure that you always contribute equally and don’t expect other people to do allthe work for you.

- Collaboration doesn’t mean cheating. For example, it is ok to discuss an assignmentand what you think it is about and how you might approach it, but it is not ok to writethe assignment together and hand in similar pieces of work.

- Collaboration also doesn’t mean wasting time. If you are working with other peoplemake sure you are staying on task and not getting distracted.

- Every now and then you have to do things on your own. If you always do your Mathshomework with your friends, you might not really know what you can and can’t do onyour own. The first time you find this out could be a test which could be a big issue.Always ask yourself if the work you are doing is going to be enhanced bycollaboration or if it is more appropriate to try the work on your own.

- It is important each night to have a certain amount of homework time on your own. Ifyou want to collaborate when you are working at home, make specific times to dothis. Don’t skype the entire night with your friends. Instead have set times forcollaboration and set times for independent work.

You and your parents can learn more about groupwork skills atwww.studyskillshandbook.com.au by logging in with the details below and working throughsome of the units.

U16s RUgBy 7s

On Tuesday (the 22nd) the under 16s boys travelled to Hunter Valley Grammar school to take part in their inaugural Rugby 7s festival. As a replacement team for a late withdrawal, we were hard pressed to gather and prepare a team in time for the gala day. Nine willing boys stepped up to the mark, but seeing as none had ever played the game, were taken through a crash course of Rugby 7s over a two-week period. They went down in their first match to Lakes Grammar, but were able to play some impressive rugby and were even leading at the break.

Growing in confidence, the boys entered into their next game eager to win. Needing a victory to make the semifinals, the 16s boys pulled off a miraculous come from behind win to see them take the match by a single conversion. Now into the semifi-nals the boys came up against the Lakes again. By this time the boys were certainly beginning to get a grasp on the game. The re-match saw the boys from Gosford trounce the Lakes in order to win a spot in the Grand Final. The boys were beaten and battered, but elated to have made the final in their first ever outing as a 7s team. The final, unfortunately, did not go to plan, with Hunter Valley Grammar finally exposing our inexperience and came out victors.

Despite this final result, we should be very proud of the under 16s boy’s efforts. With little to no experience one can only imagine what could be achieved with a little more training. Special mention to Year 9 student Aiden B, who, in his first ever game of rugby was awarded MVP. He scored a handful of trys as well as number of excellent try saving tackles. Not bad for a soccer player. Honorable mention to Year 10 student Lucas G who was the highest point-scorer for the day.
