Lock Collectors - Preserving our History

A quick internet search on types of collectables will result in literally thousands of categories. It should be no surprise to any of us that lock and key collecting are among those categories. After all, locks and keys have been around for thousands of years and are tied to the history of civilization. Of course, many avid collectors are or were practicing locksmiths, including several members of GPLA, (most locksmiths probably have sizeable collections that they never really intended to have!) but it stands to reason that there are people other than locksmiths that actively build and organize such collections. What may be surprising to some locksmiths is the size and depth of the lock collecting community. Bloggers and internet forums abound. Associations comprised of lock collectors can be found in many countries around the world, including quite a few associations here in the USA alone. Many of these associations have newsletters, websites and annual conventions - just like our industry does - where they display, sell and buy all manner of locks and keys. Attendees include the casual hobbyists who find locks and keys to be fascinating marvels of engineering, hard-core collectors that seek out rare and historical artifacts, those that collect only padlocks, or keys, or safe locks, or several other sub-categories. Some collectors preserve their locks in the state that they acquired them in, while others restore their locks to a level that qualifies them as art. In addition to lock collectors’ associations, there are a number of museums that house lock collections, and several museums dedicated solely to locks, keys and related items. One of the best-known and most comprehensive lock collection here in the US is housed at the Lock Museum of America located in Terryville, CT. Founded in 1972 by Tom Hennessy, the Lock Museum of America houses an extensive lock collection that includes door locks, chest locks, padlocks, handcuffs and keys, early era time locks, escutcheon plates from safes, a large number of British safe locks and more. Mr. Hennessy was presented with the 1989 Philadelphia Award for his efforts in founding the museum. The Greater Philadelphia Locksmiths Association is pleased to recognize the lock collecting community at this year’s convention, and excited to welcome several members of that community as a part of our Product Exhibit on Saturday. Their dedication to collecting and preserving these examples of engineering and human ingenuity provides a direct link to the history of our industry.

AUTOMOTIVE LOCKSMITHING 101

Instructor: John Paul Williams Want to get into the lucrative field of automotive locksmithing? Most automotive classes teach about transponder technologies, but what about making that mechanical first key, or making a key to an older vehicle? If you want to learn these skills then this is the class for you! This class will teach you the basics in automotive key origination. We will go over what reference material to use, and how to use it. We will also cover automotive tools that will read the locks without disassembling the door panels. We will cover how to tear down the old GM columns to make the ignition key. There will plenty of hands on so that you can get the feel for the tools and equipment. There will be lots more information on making keys to both older and newer cars so that you can feel confident in taking those automotive calls rather than sending them to your competitor. As an added bonus, we will have Paul Kline give a demonstration on the Lishi tools. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student. About the instructor: John Paul Williams has been in the locksmithing industry for over 17 years. He started working with Neff's Safe Lock and Security for over 10 years where they not only did commercial and residential but specialized in automotive locksmithing. While working there, he traveled all over the US selling automotive locksmithing tools. The last few years before he left to start his own business, he answered the free Tech support lines, helping many other locksmiths with their automotive questions. Now, as the independent company-owner of Answered Prayer Locksmithing, he is primarily a dedicated automotive locksmith.
